The happiest people in the world may live in Scandinavia, a new study suggests.

That's according to the United Nations General Assembly's second World Happiness Report, which ranks countries based on several measures of well-being and analyzes the factors that contribute to that well-being.

Denmark was the happiest country, followed by Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Canada. [See List of World's Happiest Countries]

Happiness counts

For years, the tiny Himalayan country of Bhutan has tried to measure "gross national happiness" to counter measures such as gross domestic product (GDP), arguing that such simple metrics don't capture what is really meaningful to people.

Last year's study showed that whereas rich people are happier on average than poor people, increasing GDP in a country doesn't necessarily boost well-being. For instance, GDP tripled in the United States since the 1960s, yet well-being has stagnated.

To assess world happiness in the new study, the researchers analyzed happiness data starting from 2005. Most of the data came from the Gallup World Poll, which surveyed more than 150 countries around the world.

Worldwide trends

Scandinavian countries topped the list of happiest countries, with the United Kingdom ranking 22nd, bested by Mexico, Panama and the United Arab Emirates.

On average, people in more than 150 countries rate their happiness as a 5.1 on a scale of 0 to 10. But happiness hasn't stayed constant over time: 61 countries saw their happiness improve over the years, while 41 countries have become unhappier. Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America are becoming happier overall, while industrial nations report less well-being.

More than three-quarters of the differences in happiness scores were attributable to six key metrics: real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption and generosity. [7 Things That Will Make You Happy]

The new data could help public policy-makers tweak their policies to impact those factors, such as cracking down on corruption, to boost people's happiness.

In adddition, mental health problems such as clinical depression and anxiety have a huge impact on people's well-being. Yet mental health issues are often ignored b policy-makers, the study found.

"There is now a rising worldwide demand that policy be more closely aligned with what really matters to people as they themselves characterize their well-being," said study co-author Jeffery Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, in a statement. "More and more world leaders are talking about the importance of well-being as a guide for their nations and the world. The World Happiness Report 2013 offers rich evidence that the systematic measurement and analysis of happiness can teach us a lot about ways to improve the world's well-being and sustainable development."

Happy citizens also make for better countries: The report found that happiness makes fore people who live longer, more productive lives, have higher earnings and are better citizens.

Politics / A Country So Corrupt It Would Be Better To Burn Our Aid Money by eeguru: 12:08am On Aug 12, 2013
Nigeria is not quite the most corrupt country on earth. But according to Transparency International, which monitors international financial corruption, it is not far off — coming a shameful 172nd worst among the 215 nations surveyed.

Only countries as dysfunctional, derelict and downright dangerous as Haiti or the Congo are more corrupt.

In theory, Nigeria’s 170 million-strong population should be prospering in a country that in recent years has launched four satellites into space and now has a burgeoning space programme.

Frankly, we might as well flush our cash away or burn it for all the good it's doing for ordinary Nigerians

Moreover, Nigeria is sitting on crude oil reserves estimated at 35 billion barrels (enough to fuel the entire world for more than a year), not to mention 100 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

It also manages to pay its legislators the highest salaries in the world, with a basic wage of £122,000, nearly double what British MPs earn and many hundreds of times that of the country’s ordinary citizens.

The oil industry is highly corrupt, with 136 million barrels of crude oil worth $11¿billion (£7.79 billion) were illegally siphoned off in just two years from 2009 to 2011

No wonder the ruling elite can afford luxury homes in London or Paris, and top-end cars that, across West Africa, have led to the sobriquet ‘Wabenzi’, or people of the Mercedes-Benz.

Yet 70 per cent of Nigerians live below the poverty line of £1.29 a day, struggling with a failing infrastructure and chronic fuel shortages because of a lack of petrol refining capacity, even though their country produces more crude oil than Texas.

And that poverty is not for want of assistance from the wider world.

70 per cent of Nigerians live below the poverty line of £1.29 a day, struggling with a failing infrastructure and chronic fuel shortages

Since gaining its independence in 1960, Nigeria has received $400 billion (£257 billion) in aid — six times what the U.S. pumped into reconstructing the whole of Western Europe after World War II.

Nigeria suffers from what economists call the ‘resource curse’ — the paradox that developing countries with an abundance of natural reserves tend to enjoy worse economic growth than countries without minerals and fuels.

The huge flow of oil wealth means the government does not rely on taxpayers for its income, so does not have to answer to the people — a situation that fosters rampant corruption and economic sclerosis because there is no investment in infrastructure as the country’s leaders cream off its wealth.

Nigerian police can often be easily bribed to look the other way in a country where corruption in Nigeria is endemic

Corruption in Nigeria is endemic — from parents bribing teachers to get hold of exam papers for their children through clerks handed ‘dash’ money to get round the country’s stifling bureaucracy to policemen taking money for turning a blind eye.

It is at its most blatant, perhaps, in the oil industry, where 136 million barrels of crude oil worth $11 billion (£7.79 billion) were illegally siphoned off in just two years from 2009 to 2011, while hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies were given to fuel merchants to deliver petrol that never materialised.

Whether the country is ruled by civilians or soldiers, who invariably proclaim their burning desire to eradicate civilian corruption, it makes absolutely no difference.

The huge flow of oil wealth means the government does not rely on taxpayers for its income, so does not have to answer to the people

The military ruled Nigeria between 1966 and 1979 and from 1983 to 1999, but if anything, corruption was worse when they were in charge since they had a habit of killing anyone threatening to expose them.

It is estimated that since 1960, about $380 billion (£245 billion) of government money has been stolen — almost the total sum Nigeria has received in foreign aid.

And that even when successive governments attempt to recover the stolen money, much of this is looted again.

President Sani Abacha, a military dictator who ruled in the Nineties, had accrued a staggering $4¿billion (£2.58¿billion) fortune by the time he died

In essence, 80 per cent of the country’s substantial oil revenues go to the government, which disburses cash to individual governors and hundreds of their cronies, so effectively these huge sums remain in the hands of a mere 1 per cent of the Nigerian population.
Political power is universally regarded as a chance to reap the fortunes of office by the ruling elite and its families and tribes.

The most egregious example was President Sani Abacha, a military dictator who ruled in the Nineties and accrued a staggering $4 billion (£2.58 billion) fortune by the time he died of a heart attack while in bed with two Indian prostitutes at his palace in the nation’s capital, Abuja, in 1998. Abacha’s business associates did nicely, too — one of them deposited £122 million in a Jersey offshore account after selling Nigerian army trucks for five times their worth.

Public office is so lucrative that people will kill to get it. Nigeria has 36 state governors, 31 of whom are under federal investigation for corruption.

In one of the smallest states, a candidate for the governorship occupied by one Ayo Fayose received texts signed by the ‘Fayose M Squad’ — and it was clear the ‘M’ was for ‘Murder’ when they stabbed and bludgeoned a third candidate to death in his own bed.

By the end of its term of office, the British Government will have handed over £1 billion in aid to Nigeria.

Given the appalling levels of corruption in that nation, this largesse is utterly sickening — for the money will only be recycled into bank accounts in the Channel Islands or Switzerland.

Frankly, we might as well flush our cash away or burn it for all the good it’s doing for ordinary Nigerians

Romance / How To Heal Your Heartbreak by eeguru: 5:22pm On Mar 06, 2013
The emotional load is overwhelming!

If your breakup is new, it is still raw and searingly painful to the light of day.

If it has been some weeks or months, and you are still not coping with the world, your breakup is a festering sore that won’t heal.

What will happen to the rest of your world if you can’t face the reality of it all and get on with life? Will your work performance suffer? Are you already coming to the attention of your boss because you are:
•late for work
•short with your co-workers
•missing deadlines or meetings
•forgetting appointments
•not meeting targets
•producing sub-standard work

You may even be showing the first signs of depression – sleepless nights where you toss from one side of the bed to the other with no respite, no energy the next day to do even the simplest of tasks, your moods may have changed or become erratic – on a high one minute, then the next at the bottom of a dark pit.

You could already be trapped in a downward spiral that can sap your energy, increase your confusion and distress, and create feelings of defeat and despondency that rob you of your self-worth.

It Doesn’t Have To Be Like This – There Is An Answer!

Everyone feels that their breakup is the worst ever. And the pain and anguish is very real. But other people have gone through the very same thing and survived.

And You Can Too!

Not only will you survive, but you will be stronger and wiser, accepting the reality and moving towards to better times…………….without bitterness or regret.

You will be able to look back on the good things with fondness, and dismiss the bad things as something that forced you to grow – an experience that you wouldn’t have deliberately chosen, but one that has shown you that with the help of this product, you can regain your self-assurance, respect and passion for life.

Jump back into the world and live!
Embrace life, family, friends and love – be carefree and confident again!

Religion / Re: Who Are These Jehovah's Witnesses? Misconceptions, Likes & Dislikes About Them! by eeguru: 11:42pm On Aug 20, 2011
LagosShia, i didnt want to reply you because i dont like discussing with people that are biased. The Scripture says by their fruits you shall know them. Although you claim that u are a faction from moslem that are being murdered and persecuted than any other religious group, Please, Kindly look at ur watch word ( fight like Ali and die like Hussain). Violence and terrorism has been your religion way of life whether in faction or not. If 90% of the world are JW, the world would have been a better place to live. Is that not what you are hoping and praying for in ur Ajana (paradise)? Think twice!
Religion / Re: Who Are These Jehovah's Witnesses? Misconceptions, Likes & Dislikes About Them! by eeguru: 9:31am On Aug 20, 2011
@ Beync, you have said it all. Let LagosShia first remove the rafter in his or her her eyes before looking at the straw in another person's eye. A typical trait of the Pharisees and saducees in jesus day. He is not even ashamed of what his brothers - Boko Haram(His so called right religion) is doing and he is here condeming a well known peace loving people worldwide. JW are known worldwide as the only people that follow exactly christ foot step. LagosShia go and put your house in order before making a baseless argument.
Religion / Re: Am Tired Of My Religion (Jehovah's Witness). Help Me by eeguru: 4:03pm On Jul 28, 2011
Dear poster,
I can affirm that you are not a Jehovah's Witness. You are just seeking attention or avenue to criticize JW. If really you are, i think you know the right thing to do. Even from your post, it show a typical example of one who has never learned the truth of God's world. People who are not even JW do intensive research about these celebrations and come to the fact that they are not of christian origin. So sorry for you. JW are the most happy and contented people despite the fact that they observe bible principles and commands that seems like a burden to the world. Nobody forces a religion on you, there is freedom of worship all over the world, it is your right to choose whom you will worship. Humans are free moral agents. I grew up as non JW but learning the truth of God's world has transformed my personalities and i feel happier than ever since i embrace the truth. Even my family members that are non witnesses are so happy about it. I know your problem if actually you are a witness (of which you are not) as you claim. You want to test what the world has to offer. No one is blocking you from going, mennnn we are free moral agent. But know that what ever a man is sowing he will reap. You are a babe as regards the truth of God's world. See where you are seeking for advice! Remember Jesus words that says pass through the narrow road cos broad and spacious is the road leading into destruction and many are the ones passing through it whereas narrow is the road and cramped the way leading into life and few are the ones finding it. since you choose broad road, that is your choice and no one is taking it away from you. Stop complaining, make your decision, period.
Politics / Re: Breaking News: Pst. Bakare's House On Fire by eeguru: 7:25am On Apr 23, 2011
@kobojunkie, Is sad how you present your logic here. Jesus was neutral to world political affairs. Saul you mentioned that later turn to paul no doubt was fully involved in world politics but when he embrace christianity, what did he say? He considered all those things as a refuse because of the excelling value of christ (Phlipp 3:cool. Remember Jesus word, my kingdom is never from this source (world politics). During the time of moses, david and co that was fully in politics as you said, remember God constituted a special nation for himself called the nation of Israel which represented his rulership here on earth then. Those men exercise their rulership under the supervision of God himself. If you need further discussion on this, i can use the bible to help you see that religion and worldly politics should not meddle together if actually one wants to stand out.

My dear bloodred,
Am exactly in your shoe, I wrote the nnpc test on 25th october 2008, got invitation for interview done on 17th dec 2008. Till date no information about it has been heard instead there is new advert for gt recruitment 2010, even though i applied and met all the requirements, i wasn't invited for the test. Only God knows the reason. Am very confident that i would have made the list after interview. My advice to the one that has ptdf and nnpc to write same day is for him to put it in prayer and ask God for direction. I equally have ptdf to write this saturday and i thank God for everything. There is no doubt, there is a greater chance of getting ptdf than nnpc since ptdf wants to sponsor more scholars both locally and internationally than before. I have totally lost confidence in the nnpc recruitment. How credible will it be when some first classs and 2.1 in Engineering courses were not invited! What about someone that applied for experience hire with no certification, no job experience for the past six years yet she was invited because the husband is working in nnpc. Am not discouraging anyone but that is the truth of the matter. All i believe is trusting in God (Jehovah) with ones heart, even in the most corrupt place, if God says you will work they nothing stops you from working in that area no matter how corrupt it is.
Please for those writing nnpc exam, this is the test format for 2008 recruitment: 1. Box folding 2. Advance physics - Entropy, enthalpy, thermodynamics etc 3. Analogue 4. Quantitative reasoning test 5. number series 6.current affairs like Nigeria is to Abuja as Zambia is to ______
These were the few ones i could remember.
Wishing all invitees success and God's blessing. Most importantly trust in God for direction.

the poem is literally sound. its also a very good way of expessing the challanges, dangers and woes he experiences as he does his duties as a Nigerian police and he is perfectly right.
