The only thing Yoruba about Bini is thier oba. The people themselves are a different tribe on their own.

You should try and study the history of you people. Oba is not originally a yoruba word. That is why we have two kings called Oba. The Oba of Benin, The Oba of Lagos. The two of them bear Oba as a title, while the others be different title. Eg Oni of Ife, Alafin of Oyo, Alake of Egbaland, Aujala of Ijebuland. Olu of Warri, Deji of Akure etc. Oba is a Bini word that has metamorphose to mean King, which is now use Generally as king in modern day Yoruba.

Mind you I'm from both side and know alot about my people.

wow, there are some great History Lessons here, thanks so much. My late Dad used to have a friend from Igarra named Ayodele as his surname and he speaks Yoruba so fluently, well over 30 years ago. I've always wondered at this mystery how these folks bear yoruba names all over there. No one has explained this to me like you just did.

Our undocumented history is the reason folks just come out with all sorts of distorted narratives here and there. Shame! and a bigger shame to the Akoko-Edo people who have lost their original identity due to ordinary boundary demarcation.

When a Yoruba man from Isua or Arigidi in Ondo state speaks is local dialect no Yoruba man from other part of the Oduduwa land will understand. Edo is the only state that the true representation of the major tribes in Nigeria, when you them bearing Igbo names, Yoruba and hausa names it doesn't mean they are hausa or Yoruba , they are pure Edo people . Edo is diversified state and very unique.

Tell dem my brother. Edo state is the only state in Nigeria that has the present of all other tribe and we don't discriminate, we live as one. It is only in Edo you will see someone bearing pure Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba name.

Why do they all have Yoruba names in Edo state? All their leading aspirants are either Olumide, Olayinka or Akintunde. Now, Omobayo is their deputy governor. If not for Yoruba, then for no get anything for that state. Yorubas just dominate everywhere.

From your talk, you be small boy. Akoko Edo people speak Yoruba and bears Yoruba name. Even the Itsekiri people in Delta state speaks language similar to Yoruba and they speak and understand Yoruba. Go study your people make you get sense and learn how to talk.

Back then things were hard, and food was costly, especially meat.

Personally, I and my people ( The Binis ) have been using the word AZA as SAVE orTREASURY ROOM/HOUSE from time in memorial. I have use it personally for over 50 years of my existence

thanks for your time bro but you see the word "Edo" came into used generally by the binis due the love shown on prince Ogun before becoming the Oba Ewuare 1 we all know about. so the love shown is what we agree to be the meaning of the word "Edo". but I will agree with you that the name have been used b4 that great act of love was shown. Best way to explain this is for to observe most English or Hebrew names in the Bible you will see that their names meaning is derive from what they did or the great event that took place with the person.


for Ayo it is infinity or let me say to fullness e.g na mie ke na mue ne ni wina sa yo I.e in order to see the work to the fullness.

for that of love, it is commonly called "Awemwonmwan, but you have to understand that in Benin for instance we have the ancient ( Edo nede) and the present day mix Benin.

for that of Michael Owen I can't really say how he got his name but in Benin sun is Oven or Owen.
