dgman11234: If you wanna sight see during your layover you might not need a transit visa. You're exempted because you have a valid US visa. VISAS of Canada, New Zealand and Australia also makes you exempted. Here is the little twist: You will need a Transit Visa if you transit overnight in the UK. Endeavor to check the existing rules via gov.UK |

Priceless200: Priceless200: Sorry for the late response; it's been a busy day. Let's get to it...An undergraduate GPA of 2.5 on a scale of 5.0 seems low for most but not all Petroleum Engineering programs in the US. Like most people have rightly said, though the GPA is a very important factor, it's by no means the only criteria for graduate school admission. The person in question can strive to ace the GRE and TOEFL exams and also come up with a decent statement of purpose. I believe this will boost his overall profile towards getting into a grad school. The letter of recommendation is equally important. Unfortunately, I'm aware most of our Lecturers here do turn-in generic recommendations that don't really help. The challenge with Petroleum Engineering in the US is that there are few schools offering the course when compared with other disciplines. By my estimate, there are about 18 Petroleum Engineering programs in the US. With his profile, the first 10 or thereabout might be too ambitious for now. The problem is not with the GPA alone but also his Geology background, from which he had an average grade point. So, I doubt any of the top 10 programs will grant him an admit. I'm sure he'll find a couple of schools that will admit him albeit conditionally. In my opinion the school you attend doesn't really matter if it's not in the top three. I try not to dwell on that because all US PE programs are arguably better than what you have in Petroleum departments in Nigeria. His geology background will require that he enrols for Undergraduate courses in Drilling, Reservoir, Production and probably formation evaluation. These prerequisites might take two semesters because I don't think one course from each of the aforementioned areas will suffice. He's looking at spending an estimated 36 months for his program. I won't advice changing schools because I don't think he can transfer the credits from those prerequisites courses; in-fact the grades won't count towards his MSc. degree. He could aim for a better school for his PhD. That seems fair enough. 1. Geologist and aspiring to do Petroleum engineering in Masters and PhD: It's doable though challenging coupled with long program duration 2. Very poor GPA: Ace the tests and apply to a lowly-ranked less competitive program. Are you sure it's "very" poor? Maybe not... 3. Another undergraduate entirely in PE?: No. No. I won't advise he does that. It's better he aims for a masters in Geo-sciences instead. I believe he'll find a school. I don't think it's worth going back at that age. PE is sometimes over-hyped. 1 Like |

gentledoj: I'll advise you use the same signature to prevent stories that touch. You don't know when nor where someone will notice the discrepancy. Even if the VO doesn't see it, the POE immigration officer might notice the difference...Just maybe |

harrycool: I'm heading to Texas Tech for PE. The tuition is pretty much affordable if you get the scholarship that'll qualify you for instate tuition. You might not get RA/TA from the outset. Most departments have the policy that you must have spent a year on campus and taken the International Teaching Assitanship workshop if you want a TA position. |

Otiotiotaofik: I'll advise you fill in what you see except you wanna have another I-20 shipped. 3 years should mean the maximum duration for the program. I know of those who finished their maters program in 18 months. Hope you don't have to take undergraduate prerequisite courses. |

JoshSW: Truth be told, you'll never know until you ask the graduate advisor. You stand a chance if there's no policy in place barring first year TA/RA. In that case, it'll be a factor of your overall profile, how early you apply and the departmental budget for the fiscal year. There are so many Geoscience programs as against Petroleum. You should get a program that'll suit your needs. Start researching and contacting schools in Texas and Oklahoma. For PhD, they'll most likely require some level of research experience which you can only show via publications. You can work towards getting a paper published in NAPE or AAPG. That will be a strong boost for PhD application for a Geoscience programs. 1 Like |

JoshSW: You can definitely apply but forget about funding. Most Petroleum Engineering programs in the US don't provide funding in the first year via GA/TA. However, you could be considered for a scholarship and out-of-state tuition waiver depending on your overall profile. So, you'll need to do well in your GRE and TOEFL. You can't do anything about your CGPA. Make sure you've got a sound SOP and be ready to justify the switch from geophysics. The letters of recommendations are important too. I'll suggest you contact the graduate advisors of the school you like and inquire about your situation (Geophysics UG). Trust me, you'll have to take a number of UG Petroleum Engineering courses you'll probably finish your MSc. in 36 months. The same thing applies in my Alma Mata to MSc. students who had a different course of study during UG. I'm a Petroleum Engineering graduate so I've got a pretty good idea of the situation. 1 Like |

Hi all, I've got a question with respect to my F1 interview scheduled for early July. The proof of financial support provided by my sponsor's bank is a one-page Balance Certificate addressed to the consulate and showing the available alone. I'll like to know if this will be acceptable? How important is the evidence of cash flow? The bank in question isn't domiciled in Nigeria and it took a week and quite a lot of money to ship the document. |

dolapoojo: There will be no problem at the Point of Entry if you buy a one-way ticket. You're a student, and they know that you won't return home until you complete your studies in 18 - 24 months (You're free to come home if you want though...F-1 visa allows for multiple entry but your school has to be aware of your travels outside the US) 1 Like |
