@Justcash: I disagree. The hype wouldn't be there if what he were doing were common in Africa. Frankly speaking, it is not. So relative to the governance most are able to obtain on this continent, he is doing "extraordinarily" well. Now, how does he stack up against say Western administrators? He'd probably be well above average even compared to US governors. I'd certainly take him over Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, for example. That guy didn't really do a good job, imo |
@OP: Fashola is the best administrator in naija, period. Governors and president included. However, part of this is just because the competition isn't doing as well as they should. People aren't used to good government, so they become surprised when they get it. BTW, for those claiming it is purely media hype. . . well then the hype machine has done an excellent job of bamboozling the following organizations: 1) Ambassadors (Read what the US ambassador wrote about him on Huffington Post, for example.) 2) foreign investors 3) international media 4) Other nigerian governors 5) The credit rating agency that rates Lagos State's credit as strong as that of Nigeria's All sentiments aside, we know who is performing the best. Just some for various reasons will refuse to admit it. |
Wow I thought she was older than that |
10 MW directly supplying important buildings is better than 100 MW generated and unable to go anywhere due to a lack of a transmission and distribution work. Notice that Lagos has cut out the middle man (transmission network) that hindered the 270MW IPP they did back in 1999. This is kind of a big deal, folks. |
Interesting: http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/newsonthehour/2011/may/24/newsbreak-24-05-2011-001.html Didn't seem to go as smoothly as the article posted by the OP indicates |
^-- Who told you I'm not? I'm paying as much attention to my state and region's politics as I do to national Doing one doesn't mean you cannot do the other |
Most Africa watchers recognize the enormous and limitless potential of Nigeria to expand its global and economic leadership, but more needs to be done to address social sector issues. The extraordinary vision, dedication and commitment by extraordinary individuals such as the results-oriented Governor Fashola of Lagos gives us all hope!http://www.huffingtonpost.com/amb-robin-renee-sanders/nigerias-lagos-governor-f_1_b_864550.html Why didn't she mention any of these other governors in Nigeria by name? Who exactly do you think you are fooling? You don't realize that more than only those in Nigeria are watching and weighing the performance of the 36 governors? Face reality and compel your own governors to perform so that they can become recognized as well |
asorocker is correct. Yoruba people don't realize what is going on beyond Lagos. The Economist, Yoruba newspaper Time Magazine, Yoruba newspaper Ambassador Robin Renee Sanders, secretly a Yoruba The other governors who claim that Fashola is performing the best, they are all Yoruba. E.g., that dude form Niger State |
@Lagosboy: Good analysis, I mostly agree. |
Oil companies left the ND due to the militants. It isn't their fault they wanted to minimize risks to their employees. Or should they have stayed and continue risking this: Why do you think Shell is selling off their onshore assets and trying to move offshore? If business decides to leave to somewhere safer, then it is what it is Regarding banks and telecom, wth would they locate their head office in Abuja? Do you know how difficult it is to reach abuja? It isn't centralized. . . most of the economic activity in the country goes on in the south. Or should they not be located where the actual population of the country is? Ya'll need to step up your game rather than complaining, imo |
^-- Hehe, I was being very sarcastic man ![]() How could I oppose accountability? |
Iysayah:Most of these folks have very good political reasons for their bad belle and haterism Don't pay them any attention, imo |
Iysayah:Who told you that? The people say he is the best (highest approval rating of any politician in Nigeria), other governors say he is the best, heck, even the US ambassador says he is the best. I certainly don't see these other governors getting profiled by prestigious international papers like Time Magazine and The Economist. At this point, the question shouldn't be whether he is the best governor/administrator in Nigeria. A better question might be, where does he rank amongst the best leaders in Africa? |
^-- Well said. Who are you all to be demanding accountability from your It isn't as if accountability is critical to a functioning democracy. Imagine, the audacity of you all trying to hold someone to their word. |
Yeah I thought they require that the electricity produced by the AES/Enron barges be sent to the national grid, rather than used locally? Not really Lagos State's fault that OBJ sabotaged it EDIT: See this: http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/pioneering-role-of-lagos-in-power-projects/75222/ If the FG hadn't sabotaged it, Lagos would have had improved power supply since 2003 or so. Instead they took the electricity generated by AES w/o increasing the supply to Lagos. Which defeats the whole point of Lagos's effort |
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/speaker-cpc-backs-tambuwal/ Hrm. So how did the CPC come to the decision to support this particular PDP guy for speaker? What attracts them to this Tambuwal fellow? |
on MAY 24, 2011 · in NEWS By BEN AGANDE ABUJA—THE Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Caucus in the House of Representatives may have thrown its weight behind the Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. Vanguard gathered, yesterday, that the caucus has also endorsed House Whip, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, for Deputy Speaker. Tambuwal, the only member from the North_West, is aspiring to be the Speaker of the House, and is understood to be working for the emergence of the Chief Whip, Emeka Ihedioha, to be Deputy. Vanguard further learnt that the CPC caucus met on Sunday, May 22, at Transcorp Hilton Hotel from 8:00pm till 9:18pm where Hon. Tambuwal was endorsed. One of the members of the caucus, Rep. Aliyu Gebi, CPC, Bauchi Central, told Vanguard that the caucus will go for Mallam Tambuwal. He said the caucus met on Sunday over several issues including a most “appropriate choice” for Speakership, adding: “We are going to choose leaders very soon and it is only natural that we should go for the people’s choice.” He said the choice of the SouthWest for the helmsman of the Green Chamber was “wrong” in the face of the present political realities on ground. Members of the CPC Caucus were sighted on Sunday in the Asokoro residence of Rep. Ihedioha, where Vanguard gathered they had gone to assure him of their votes on the floor next week. In a chat with Vanguard, Mr. Ihedioha, said “contrary to some media reports, “The CPC is with us and has never shown its preferences”. The CPC has over forty members in the House. Meanwhile, the leading party, PDP has stuck to its guns on the choice of South_West for Speakership, as Reps Muraina Ajibola and Mulikat Ajibola all from Oyo State slug it out. |
ABS to retrench 200 workers on MAY 24, 2011 · in NEWS By Enyim Enyim ANAMBRA State Broadcasting Service, ABS, may have concluded plans to retrench 200 of its staff. Besides, 40 guest artistes were also sacked by the state government on the grounds that their services were no longer needed. Confirming the development, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Chief Maja Umeh, said government took the decision because many of the staff were given appointments without due process. Umeh, who said the exercise was to enhance productivity, hinted that a committee had been set up to review the appointment of all staff, with a view to fishing out those whose appointments were irregular. He denied that the retrenchment of staff was because of the new national minimum wage which government was yet to accept for implementation. According to him, government is committed to the new minimum wage but need additional N3 billion to be able to implement it. He noted that the state government’s present wage bill stood at N2 billion, and appealed to the Federal Government to increase its federal allocation by N3 billion to enable it pay the minimum wage. Investigation by Vanguard showed that the same wind is blowing at the council level where staff are gripped by fear of looming retrenchment exercise. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/abs-to-retrench-200-workers/ |
I wish people would use their brains before posting. olyivy:Kindly explain to us what the practical difference between a "big generator" and power plant is (hint, there isn't any, really. Larger power plants are usually more efficient from a cost/W perspective. But ultimately if you can achieve competitive costs using a "big generator", then that is fine.) as ingenious and helpful as it will be (if completed) is not extensive and vast enough for some almajiri here to start castigaating the president who is handling a national power project. It is only the transmission grid that is really centralized. So this is a red herring on your part. Fashola is smart, i tell ya. Hes got a way of taking popular projects that arent necessarily people oriented.Kindly explain to us how ensuring that hospitals have electricity 100% of the time rather than 35% of the time isn't people oriented. |
Lmao. Even if he feels this way, he should be a bit smarter than to say so publicly. Bad move. |
Perhaps he can build a hotel chain in Ekiti State too. No doubt Tallahassee, Florida would also welcome investment from Great use of public funds, Goje and Sambo! Well done. |
lol. This Johndoe's hatred of Fashola no be small o Anyway, 10 MW is 10 MW. Good job, Fash |
Eko Ile:+1 Didn't the same clueless man ran his mouth about turning Aba or some place in the east into a Plane manufacturing den like Boeing?Lmao koruji:I see your point. |
Lmao. I dunno who is more shameful. Goje for doing this, or Sambo for commending it. |
Mohammed S. Shehu 23 May 2011 Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo has commended Gombe State Governor Muhammad Danjuma Goje for building the ultra-modern Gombe Jewel Hotel in Abuja, saying the project would not only attract revenue for the state but open up the country as a preferred tourism destination in Africa. Sambo, who stated this during the official commissioning ceremony of the hotel in Abuja on Saturday, said the project was in line with the Federal Government resolve to ensure that Nigeria markets her tourism potentials properly by providing state-of the-art luxury accommodation and catering facilities for discerning tourists. He said, "to properly compete in the tourism market, you need affordable and well-packaged accommodation facilities which are the basic needs of both leisure and business tourism." Sambo noted that recent forecast by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) indicated that tourism would play an increasingly important role in the new millennium and by the year 2020, tourism traffic would triple with 1.6 billion tourists visiting countries and spending $2 trillion, noting that Nigeria must work hard to reap huge benefits from this windfall and assume her rightful place in the comity of nations. Sambo also used the occasion to renew the commitment of the Federal Government towards providing sufficient and stable electricity which, he said, would "substantially lower the costs of production and operations for our industries, improving their transnational competitiveness." Earlier, Goje had said that the hotel was one of the abandoned projects inherited from his predecessor since 2003. He said having adjudged it as economically viable and a politically worthwhile venture, he embarked on the project to expand the revenue base of the state. He said the hotel was one of many projects he had embarked on and disclosed that projects such as the Gombe olympic-size stadium and the Gombe International Hotel have been slated for commissioning. http://allafrica.com/stories/201105230781.html |
Interesting. |
There is nothing idiotic about the decision, if he focuses on raising Nigeria's competitiveness. For example, supposedly it is cheaper for a farmer in Thailand to grow a unit of rice and export it to Nigeria than for that that same unit of rice to be produced locally. Can you imagine that it is cheaper for a man in say Lagos to buy rice imported several thousand miles away, all the way from Thailand (which means that Thai rice has shipping costs, import duties, etc tacked on top of it), than from a farmer under 100 miles away somewhere in Ogun State? This should be enough to tell you that something is very wrong with rice farming in Nigeria. Now, suppose that GEJ fixes this particular problem. Farm loans, co-operative programs, make it easier to access tractors, fertilizer, etc. If he does that, the end result will be that is cheaper to grow that unit of rice in Nigeria than to import from Thailand. Which means nobody will bother importing anymore. Otoh, GEJ could take the easy way out, by just banning imports. Or raising import duties a lot. Neither of these two things fixes the lack of competitiveness of the Nigerian farmer, though. |
^-- No worries. Just contribute N100 so that I may finally complete my pilgrimage to the following location: https://www.astronomy-pictures.net/picture-of-the-moon.jpg I've already got the Nigerian FG (and thus Nigerians in general) to contribute $10 million towards my trip. Unfortunately, it costs on the order of $100 million to sent me there. . . so I've still got a long way to go ![]() |
hmm |
Very interesting post. |
Does he mean that he wants Nigerian agric to be competitive internationally within 4 years time (so no reason to import)? Or he plans on jacking up import duties over the next four years until local agric products are always more competitive? Or perhaps a combination of these two approaches. The focus needs to be on the former, imo |
