The members of the First Baptist Church, Kosofe, Lagos, on Sunday held a peaceful protest to voice their resentment against the killings across the country, especially in the Middle Belt region. Hundreds of worshippers with various inscriptions on placards demanded an end to the killings which are allegedly being carried out by herdsmen. They also demanded the prompt release of Leah Sharibu, the kidnapped Dapchi girl still in the custody of Boko Haram. The Senior Pastor of the church, Festus Olatunde, accused the federal government of not doing enough in arresting the ugly situation that has led to the loss of lives and properties in major places like Benue. He particularly frowned at the killing of worshippers in a Catholic Church last week. He said: “The killings of worshippers inside the church is condemnable, and the only way the federal government can show their sincerity is to go after the preparators to arrest them and try and serve justice. Until the federal government does that, the Church of God will not keep quiet.” “We condemn the activities of the herdsmen that are killing people, herdsmen have no reason to carry gun and the evil they are perpetrating in the Middle Belt is enough.” He added. Mr Olatunde also questioned why the federal government is yet to secure the release of Leah, months after her fellow Dapchi girls were released. “Leah that was captured recently we want her release unconditionally with no further delays, the government should also make sure the yet to be released Chibok girls also get their freedom,” he said The Christian Association of Nigeria embarked on a massive mobilisation of churches across the federation for peaceful protests on Sunday against incessant killings by suspected herdsmen in the country. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/266580-baptist-church-worshippers-protest-kill%e2%80%8eings-across-nigeria.html? |

Kingsley Onwuka-Kalu wrote: Ugo we tow the same line of thought.. I've kept telling my fellow Igbos, boycotting elections in Anambra and elsewhere is like shooting oneself in the foot! The tired baseless propaganda that if they boycott it, the EU/UN will know how serious they are & "give Referendum date" is childless & without the least understanding of how self determination processes work! The Catalonia journey and experience towards this same aspiration is an ideal lesson for IPOB to learn. The first step toward an actual self determination is by involving in the internal electoral processes of the same region you want to secede. Get folks who share in your ideals into political power but they keep listening to their demagogues who think themselves all knowing demigods. As unique as the IPOB/Biafra agitations appear, it will continue being a pipe dream if NK & his online generals go on brazenly & arrogantly without direction thinking it's a thing of fist fight, noise making & name calling! To get a slight chance, they must prepare a thorough & well articulated plan and establish end to end diplomatic channels btw them and all important stakeholders incl esp the FG through respected Igbo sons & daughters. They would lobby well meaning Igbos, Nigerians & the Int'l community with a demonstration that they can actually govern without sliding into a Banana Republic or a "zoo" (borrowing their term ). But what do they do? The exact opposite, burn their bridges & scream blue murder thinking EU/UN actually really cares! The bigger problem in their movement is the inability of able bodied young Igbos to think critically. Seeing everyone who doesn't buy their myopic narrative as an "efuluefu" is pathetic when they can't even come up with a superior argument to convince you! This is sad, smh!!! The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources , Dr . Ibe Kachikwu , has vowed to resign if the country fails to attain self -sufficiency in the refining of petroleum products by 2019. Kachikwu , who spoke as a guest on BBC Hard Talk in London on Monday , also stated that he recently signed an agreement with the international oil giant , Agip , for the firm to build a refinery in Nigeria . When asked to state the year that Nigeria would be self -sufficient in refining petroleum products, Kachikwu replied , “ I have said 2019, and that is the target that I gave . ” On whether he would leave office if he failed to achieve the target , the minister replied , “ Yes, of course. That is the reason why you are in government . ” Kachikwu was also told by his interviewer that the industry was totally dysfunctional considering the fact that Nigeria exports crude oil and imports refined products despite having refineries , but he stated that efforts were being made to revive obsolete facilities in the sector . Kachikwu said , “ Let me say this ; yes it is wrong , we ought to process rather than ship out crude . But look at all the efforts I have made in the last few months , including working with investors to begin to reshape the refineries that were comatose for many years . “ The President is there for two years and those refineries were down before he came . Since coming , we ’ ve been able to get them back to produce seven million litres versus zero . That ’ s not the 90 per cent template. We’ re now refurbishing the refineries and I ’ ve just signed an agreement with Agip to build a new refinery in Nigeria . ” He added , “ I ’ ve delivered on everything I promised when I came into office . First , I took the NNPC and moved it into a profit-making organisation, which was the first time in history . I removed cash call deficit of over $6bn and we renegotiated it . Everything that I promised, I ’ ve delivered and I will deliver on the refineries ; I ’ m committed to that . “ And I will also deliver a future for oil that makes sense for Nigeria . But bear in mind that one has been there for one and half years , while the President has been there for two years , so I can’ t pretend that we are going to solve in one day all the problems that happened in Nigeria in the past. ” The minister stated that oil prices would not “ hit the roof again ” as was recorded in the past, adding that this had provided an opportunity for Nigeria to get serious . Kachikwu also stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria , through its monetary policy , had been able to force a lot of citizens out of the consumption culture, a development he said had strengthened the naira considerably . On the slump in crude oil production in Nigeria , the minister said the activities of militants in the Niger Delta led to the decline in crude output and denied claims that the Federal Government was buying off the restive youths in the region through the payment of huge sums to them . He stated that over $40bn had been sunk in the Niger Delta in the last 10 years and that nothing tangible was on ground to show for it . http://punchng.com/we-must-produce-enough-fuel-by-2019-or-ill-resign-kachikwu/ |

Social media has been abuzz with news that the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu, “shunned” the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi II at a recent public gathering. A 25 second video made the rounds all day yesterday. Sabinews can now authoritatively reveal that the Oba of Lagos did not “shun” nor set out to humiliate the younger Oba who is universally regarded as the pre-eminent Oba in Yoruba land. Infact the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu, may be totally undeserving, it now seems, of the vitriol that has been poured his way. Videos circulating online show the Ooni walk past his reserved seat. He greeted the Obi of Onitsha first, before stooping to greet the older Oba. The Oba of Lagos did not, however, acknowledge the younger Oba who had bowed slightly. Instead he waved at him as he would at a lowly subject. The Ooni did not betray any emotion as he turned and walked back to the seat reserved for him. Comments on twitter and facebook lambasted the Oba of Lagos for not acknowledging the Ooni of Ife with many calling him names and pointing out the seniority amongst the ranks of Yoruba Obas. Infact, an onlinereport quoted the Ooni’s palace as saying he would continue to respect the Oba of Lagos despite the snub. Sabinews investigations have, however, shown that there may a deeper reason why the Oba “shunned” the Ooni. The truth, which many have overlooked and which the palace appears unwilling to acknowledge is that the Oba of Lagos is visually impaired and may not have realised who had come to greet him especially as the person seemed to genuflect. To him, anyone bowing for him must be a subject. But it now appears that the Oba persoonally acknowledged hisvisual impairment in a September 2, 2016 report published in The Nation where he is quoted to have said he has suffered from Glaucoma for 21 years. Glaucoma is a debilitating and irreversible disease of the eyes which causes damage to the optic nerve and vision loss. Untreated, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years. The Nation story has the byline Oyeyemi Gbenga-Mustapha and reads in part: “Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has called on Lagos residents to go for glaucoma screening to prevent blindness. Oba Akiolu said this when the management of Pfizer Specialties, the country’s arm of Pfizer Global Pharmaceuticals, paid the monarch a courtesy visit. Oba Akiolu said he has lived with the condition for over 21 years and was able to manage same because of the right information. “So, as a person living with glaucoma, I can say for anyone not to go blind, if you are being treated for glaucoma, be sure to take your prescribed glaucoma medicine every day. See your eye care professional regularly. You can help protect the vision of family members and friends, who may be at high risk for glaucoma, especially those over age 40 and everyone over 60 years and people with a family history of the disease by sharing information as I am doing. “Please encourage them to have a comprehensive dilated eye examination regularly. Remember that lowering eye pressure in the early stages of glaucoma slows progression of the disease and helps save vision,” said Oba Akiolu.” An official of the Lagos state government who spoke to sabinews on the condition of anonymity said “have you ever wondered why he always wears dark glasses even indoors? I once saw him leave the seat reserved for him to sit on another man’s lap at a public event. I wonder why the palace has not acknowledged it by now and saved the Oba all the insults on social media.” With this, it now seems that there may have indeed been no intention on the part of Oba Akiolu to humiliate the Ooni of Ife just an honest mistake caused by a physical impairment and something a google search could have saved. https://www.sabinews.com/finally-real-reason-oba-lagos-shunned-ooni-ife-onyema-dike/ |
