Let me outline each component and their work
Inverter is to convert the DC power stored in a battery to AC power for your appliances use
Charge controller is to prevent your battery from overcharging most especially when you use alternative source of energy with wind or solar to charge your battery.
If you intend to charge with power from the utility company you need a battery charger. Some inverters have a built in battery charger with overcharge protection built into them.

If connected to grid means it uses power from the utility company then it either means the inverter has a built in battery charger for use when it is connected to public grid or you have a separate battery charger that you use to charger the battery and with that you don't need the charge controller when it is connected to the grid.

You said the installers did the job well so why are you still bothered. It's is the job of the charge controller to manage your battery charging process including overcharging.

I am trying to decide whether a single phase will serve the purpose or if I must buy a 3-phase meter. It is a 5-bedroom duplex, each room having an A/c plus two A/cs in the sitting room, making it 6 A/Cs. There are 6 bathrooms, each having a water heater. We also have electric stove, electric iron and an electric kettle. Not forgetting 2 deep freezes as well.

With the kind of appliances you use, ideally, you should be connected to a three-phase supply with the load adequately balanced over the three phases and you should get a three-phase meter but we have seen a lot of abnormalities in this country. Just confirm the kind of supply you have either single phase or three phase and apply for the appropriate meter - single phase meter for single phase supply and vice versa.
P.S. if you are using single phase supply, I will be praying for you and your street transformer.

Yes this is Nigeria, we are the ones who made it what it is today, but for Nigeria to be better, we should not just change leadership, we should change ourselves as well. The change can begin with you and I. We should genuinely offer help to people and hope they reciprocate it to others hopefully we can get a multiplier effect.

@meobizy brilliant idea. I salute your courage but right now selling excess energy back to NBET is still unrealistic due to constitutional constraints (some firms/company are stuck here too), also the amount you might want to sell might not be large enough for bulk purchase.
The poster above me has offered you the best advice right now, if you can approach nearby businesses on supplying them electricity, sit down with them on appropriate pricing and get them metered to avoid stories that touch, then your idea can be implemented.

It's unfortunate that you were defrauded by these people but for me the blame rest on you for not doing due diligence and trying to save cost by employing quacks and/or artisans.
If you had employed a registered engineer, the cost might be slightly higher than the one quoted by the artisan but you get a good and quality job and peace of mind/assurance that he can't run away with your money because he is registered and can have his licence withdrawn.
Btw this is not the right medium, even if we see them can we arrest them? Kindly lodge a complaint with the police and/or EFCC. I hope you recover your money.

It is not that kind of bill per say, it is a bill to amend the constitution to remove the generation, transmission and distribution of power from the exclusive list to the concurrent list. With the amendment, states, local governments and private entities can perform the aforesaid functions. The passing of the bill is just the first step. There are still other procedures to be done before the constitution is finally amended and it comes to fruition.

The bill is still nor explicitly stated regarding the place where its been stated that, state will be "directly" responsible for the generation of their own electricity, or they will be responsible for transmission and distribution of electricity only. If going by what I read previously, in the assertion that we generate enough electricity, that only transmission and distribution is the problem. Then I believe that states should be responsible for the infrastructure for transmission of electricity, and also state should be handed the power to organise the distribution, by making sure more discos are set up for proper distribution, but this can only be possible, when the infrastructures are already in place.

The bill is about generating, transmitting and distribution of power. Generation of electricity is not the major problem that we have ( though) we are still not generating enough but transmission and distribution. The gencos have a lot of generated power not being taken off by TCN and subsequently discos because of infrastructural deficits but with the passing of this bill, the power sector is expected to open up well, depending on the political will of state actors. State actors can generate and distribute power to the people within their locale. State actors can set up distribution channels directly from gencos to communities and so on. The possibilities are endless. There are a whole lot of wasted power from private firms that can now be distributed for people to use. Though power is not cheap, but it stimulates the economy and increases purchasing power so people should be able to afford it. It also brings competition, giving these discos a run for there money

What exactly is your project that will make the question easier to answer. We have several types of street lighting; solar streetlights and conventional ones with electricity. The conventional ones are either incandescent or led lights. Then you have the fittings, poles, cabling, kiosk and up to the transformer for conventional ones and then for the solar ones you have the solar panels, battery and then either fixed unit, standalone systems or central distribution system. So you have to be specific.

My first question is hope you are not involved in any electricity theft or Meter by-passing. If not, the next step is to go their leme office and demand to speak to the Customer Service Officer. Explain what transpired and ask what he/she can do. If you are still not satisfied you can call their Ibadan head office or contact NERC Ibadan office to lodge your complaint.
