Lagos State has emerged as the fifth largest economy in Africa, consequent upon which, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, disclosed that his administration is in the process of setting up an Economic Management Team, EMT, comprising distinguished individuals from the private sector and the public sector to manage and improve the feat.

Ambode spoke on Tuesday at the Lagos House in Ikeja when he received a delegation from the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce on courtesy visit, disclosing that the emergence of Lagos as Africa’s fifth largest economy was very instructive.

He promised that his government would explore synergy with private sector with the view to catapult the State into a true global city-state in the true sense of the word.

Ambode said: “Very soon we would be setting up what we would refer to as an Economic Management Team to drive the fifth largest economy, because that’s the way we need to envision ourself and this Economic Management Team will involve nominees from the Chambers and other people in the private sector so that we can collaborate because majorly this economy is driven by the private sector.

“Our duty is to create an enabling environment and fuse all that together.
“I think that synergy can just catapult Lagos into that global city-state that we want it to be.”
The governor explained that his decision to come up with the Office of Oversees Affairs and Investment, otherwise known as Lagos Global, was part of efforts at encouraging investment in Lagos both from within and outside, among many other initiatives of the present administration.

His words: “I think it is very instructive to clearly state that the economy of Lagos is in the hands of the private sector and beyond the fact that Lagos is now the fifth largest economy in Africa, the drive to take Nigeria out of recession actually resides in the private sector and willingness on the part of the public sector.

“Because our economy is in the hands of the private sector and we are willing to allow them drive it, that is why we have decided to formulate policies and decisions that will make the private sector to thrive in this State and that is why in the last 18 months, we have been running this administration on a tripod of security, job opportunities and infrastructure development.”

Explaining the tripod, Ambode said his administration believed that when the people and investors are well secured, businesses will thrive and more people would be employed, while the resources generated in terms of Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, would be deployed to provide infrastructure for the people.
The International Monetary Fund, IMF, had, in its Economic Outlook Report for October, projected Nigeria as the biggest economy in Africa ahead of South Africa and Egypt, with the Accountant-General of the Federation, Alhaji Idris Ahmed saying that the development demonstrates the resilienceof the economy.

The Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade, on Tuesday appointed 1,106 persons into various positions.

The positions were in the categories of special advisers, special assistants, personal assistants as well as the chairmen and members of boards, commissions, departments and agencies.

The governor had, in a parley with journalists in August, reiterated his decision to appoint over 1,000 political appointees for poverty alleviation in the state.

So far, there are 28 commissioners in addition to 65 special advisers and over 100 special assistants, personal assistants and community relations officers.

A breakdown of the latest appointment shows that 799 were appointed into various boards, commissions and agencies, while the remaining 307 appointees were categorised into special advisers (six), senior special advisers (30), special assistants (75) and Personal Assistants (25).

[b]Others are personal assistants to paramount rulers (16), representatives of each local government in the state food bank unit (90), liaison officers for the 18 local government area and three senatorial districts (21), special assistants on religious affairs (18) and permanent secretaries (26).

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita, the governor said the appointments would take effect from November 1, 2016.

But reacting to the development, a former Special Adviser to Ayade on Strategy and National Contact, Mr. Ray Ugba-Morphy, said the appointments were unnecessary.

Ugba-Morphy, who resigned from Ayade’s cabinet, said, “He is a governor who understands all the appointments that he is making. But considering the lean purse of the state, it is not necessary because those already appointed have not been properly settled.

“The wages of political appointees are fixed by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission as stipulated by the law, but he (Ayade) has not met those requirements.

“It is right if the appointments are meant to settle political scores, but economically, it is not viable. He should create opportunity for people to have skills to earn a living.”

The African continent has lagged behind in most facets of human development because its largest country, Nigeria, has been remained in poverty due to fraudulent activities in public service, a leading anti-corruption campaigner said on Tuesday.
Patrick Lumumba, a former Director of Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, said Nigerian leaders must do everything within their capacity to address endemic graft. This, he said, would refocus Africa on the path towards prosperity.
“Africa is behind because Nigeria has not released her potential. It’s time the leaders rise up because one in every five Africans is a Nigerian.”
Mr. Lumumba spoke at the two-day anti-corruption summit which began this Tuesday at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Abuja.
The program is put together by the National Assembly under the leadership of Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara.
Mr. Lumumba, during the keynote speech, said it is time for Nigeria, and Africa as a whole, to abandon the culture of “punishing small thieves and electing big ones.”
Mr. Lumumba, a professor of law, said Nigeria is a microcosm of Africa and, as such, cannot afford to keep getting it wrong.
“Behavioural change culture must be instilled in Nigeria,” Mr. Lumumba said.
He said Nigeria must put in place stringent mechanism that would effectively caution against corruption.
The three arms of government must strengthen and not undermine the institutions that are meant to fight corruption so that Nigeria can realise its potential, Mr. Lumumba said.
“People must be made to know that if you reap where you have not sown there are consequences. Men only change their behaviours when there is a threat pain.”
The don called for a wholesome support for President Muhammadu Buhari in his war against corruption, especially on the need to build lasting institutions.
“Institutions are the heart of the fight against corruption but he will not succeed if the legislature is not behind him and the institutions are not strengthened.
“Because only institutions defy time and outlive those that live on graft.
Mr. Saraki, in his opening remarks, said Nigeria had failed to seriously fight against corruption for more than 40 years. He said the National Assembly will work to partner with the Buhari administration for lasting solutions to the menace.

Dr. Olugbumi Usim-Wilson has filed an application to withdraw as a surety to Olisa Metuh, a former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, spokesman, in the latter’s ongoing trial for alleged money laundering.
Usin-Wilson at the resumed trial of Metuh at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday tendered his application before Justice Okon Abang.
He prayed the court to remove her name from the list of people standing as sureties to Metuh.
But Metuh, in a swift reaction, filed an application, praying the court to allow him replace Usim-Wilson with the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
Counsel to Usim-Wilson, Clement Chinaka, urged the court to hear the application for withdrawal first and not the one for replacement.
Metuh’ Counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), observed that if the application for withdrawal was taken before that of replacement, his client might risk going back to prisons.
Ikpeazu, therefore, urged the court to use its discretion in the matter.
Abang ruled that the court would take the application of Metuh first since he had been consistent in his trial.
The judge thereafter adjourned the case till October 27 for hearing of both applications.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had filed a seven-count charge of criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering against Metuh.

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent outburst that his wife, Aisha “belongs to his Kitchen,” former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said the President needs prayers because “demons are speaking through him.”
There has been a verbal ‘war’ between the first couple, following Aisha Buhari’s criticism of her husband’s government.
But the President while in Germany reacted to her comment, saying she “belongs to my kitchen and other rooms” in his house.
Following backlash from the public, Buhari’s media aide, Shehu Garba defended the President, saying the statement was a joke.
However, the former Director of Media and Publicity in the campaign organisation of ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, has claimed that Buhari’s comment is part of the “spiritual dimension of living in the villa.”
Fani-Kayode, who took to his Facebook page said, “When the President can get up and tell the whole world all the way from distant Germany that his wife ‘belongs to the kitchen and other room’ simply because she dared to speak her mind to the BBC, then you know that he is in the grip of something evil and that demons are speaking through him.
“It is all part of the spiritual dimension of living in the villa that Abati was referring to in his latest essay.”
Recall that a former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reuben Abati, had last week described Nigeria’s seat of power, Aso Rock, as an evil place.
Fani-Kayode added, “The President’s mind has become twisted and he is now possessed by strange and powerful entities. Any man that can say such a thing about his own wife can kill his own children. He needs a lot of prayers.”
