President Muhammadu Buhari has said past looters of the treasury are behind the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta region.
According to him”Those who stole Nigeria dry are not happy. They recruited the militants against us in the Niger Delta, and began to sabotage oil infrastructure. We lose millions of barrels per day, at a time when every dollar we can earn, counts. It is a disgrace that a minimum of 27 states, out of 36 that we have in Nigeria, can’t pay salaries.
In a statement by his special adviser media, Femi Adesina, President Buhari was speaking to top rate Nigerian professionals based in the United States of America ,whom Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Matters and International Relations, described as “15 of the best people God ever created.”
The professionals were in New York to meet with the Nigerian President. Top flight aeronautics engineers, physicians, I.T experts, a Judge, a top policewoman, entrepreneurs, an Import Specialist at Customs and Border Protection, professors, two straight A students, and many others.
The parley provided President Buhari opportunity to bring them up to speed on how and why Nigeria got into trouble, with an assurance that with all hands on deck, including the best brains in the Diaspora, the country would bounce back in the shortest possible time.
“I am very pleased with this meeting,” President Buhari stated. “Wherever you go in the world, you find highly competent and outstanding Nigerians. They not only make great impact on their host countries and communities, their financial remittances back home also help our economy, particularly at a time like this, when things are down.
“We got into trouble as a country, because we did not save for the rainy day. For example, between 1999 and 2015, when we produced an average of 2.1 million barrels of oil per day, and oil prices stood at an average of $100 per barrel, we did not save, neither did we develop infrastructure. Suddenly, when we came in 2015, oil prices fell to about 30 dollars per barrel.
“I asked; where are the savings? There were none. Where are the railways? The roads? Power? None. I further asked; what did we do with billions of dollars that we made over the years? They said we bought food. Food with billions of dollars? I did not believe, and still do not believe.
“In most parts of Nigeria, we eat what we grow. People in the South eat tubers, those in the North eat grains, which they plant, and those constitute over 60 per cent of what we eat. So, where did the billions of dollars go? We did a lot of damage to ourselves by not developing infrastructure when we had the money.
“Talking of our military, they earned respect serving in places like Burma, Zaire, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, and then, suddenly, that same military could no longer secure 14 out of 774 local governments in the country. Insurgents had seized them, calling them some sort of caliphate, and planting their flags there; till we came, and scattered them.

EducationSome Candidates Forget Expo In Answer Booklets – WAEC by emamos(op): 7:42am On Sep 23, 2016
In a hurry to submit their answer booklets to invigilators, some candidates forget their expo (materials used for examination malpractice) in the booklets, the West African Examination Council has said.

The council also noted that some other candidates use different answer booklets from its authorised copies.

Its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, who confirmed this in an interview with our correspondent, however, added that the council had reduced the incidence of impersonation in its examinations through its biometric registration process

He said, “We encounter malpractice during the examination and during marking. Some leave the expo in the answer booklets. We see that all the time. Others use other answer booklets different from the council’s own. But, we discover these things during marking because the booklets do not have our serial numbers and they are not usually signed by the supervisors. Supervisors usually sign the booklets before they are given to the candidates.

“We have been able to handle impersonation through our biometric process but there is still collusion where candidates will copy exactly the same answers usually dictated by a teacher. We have our invigilators but the number is limited. When you leave the centre or before we get there, they will do what they want.”

He added that the council was still dealing with challenges of collusion, which involved teachers aiding candidates during examination.

Ojijeogu, who said that some candidates harassed supervisors, noted that the development had forced the council to adopt a more discreet approach in making announcements regarding examination malpractice.

“We no longer make noise about examination malpractice because examination supervision is a hazardous job. When candidates engage in malpractice, we just take their number and they fill a form. Some of our workers have been held hostage, female supervisors have been harassed. It is a hazardous job,” he added.

The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his war against corruption and terrorism. He also told Buhari that leaders across the world respect him for giving Nigeria a positive image.

Buhari’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement quoted Ban Ki-Moon as saying this during a bilateral meeting with the President on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly in New York.

The UN scribe said, “You are highly respected by world leaders, including myself. Your person has given your country a positive image.”

He said the UN recognised the achievements of the Buhari administration against Boko Haram, urging that human rights be upheld always, to prevent a repeat of the scenario being witnessed in Syria.
Ban Ki-moon also thanked the Nigerian leader for his commitment to issues on climate change, adding that the government should “own the Sustainable Development Goals,” for the good of its citizens

Nairaland GeneralIgbo Businessman Strips Unclad To Curse Debtor In Abuja [PHOTOS] by emamos(op):
An Igbo businessman has shocked residents of Abuja as he took off his clothes publicly and went stark naked to demand for the money he was being owed by an alleged rich debtor.
The incident was reported to have happened at Ali Akilu Street in the highbrow Asokoro District in Abuja.
Apparently tired of the numerous excuses of the alleged rich debtor, the businessman, whose identity was not revealed resorted to the method of going stark naked in the house of his debtor just to compel him to settle the debt.
An eyewitness said, “He stripped totally naked, went to the rich man’s house in broad daylight and began to curse him.
“He gave him an ultimatum to pay him back his money or face the consequences.
“He also claimed that the debtor had threatened to lock him up if he continued to demand for his money.”

PoliticsBuhari Asks UN To Negotiate Chibok Girls Swap by emamos(op): 9:19am On Sep 22, 2016
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has invited the UN to negotiate with Boko Haram to end their seven-year Islamist insurgency and secure the release of the more than 200 schoolgirls abducted from Chibok.
He said he was willing to swap Boko Haram fighters in custody for the girls.
But he said it was difficult to know who within Boko Haram after splits in its leadership emerged this year:
Government had reached out, ready to negotiate, but it became difficult to identify credible leaders. We will welcome intermediaries such as UN outfits, to step in.”
Mr Buhari was speaking on the sidlelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The abduction of the schoolgirls led to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, that was supported by US First Lady Michelle Obama and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai.
So far only one schoolgirl has been found after two years in captivity.
In the last 18 months Boko Haram has lost most of the territory it had controlled after being pushed back in an offensive by the military of Nigeria

Foreign AffairsIt’s Time For Mugabe To Go — Botswana President by emamos(op): 7:43pm On Sep 21, 2016
Botswana President Ian Khama has called on President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe to step aside without delay and allow a new leadership in the country.
He said on Wednesday in Gaborone that the call had become imperative because the political and economic implosion in Zimbabwe since 2000 is dragging down the whole of southern Africa.
Mr. Khama, a British-trained former general, said the 92-year-old president, who came to power after independence from Britain in 1980, should accept the reality of his advancing years and retire.
“We are talking about a 92-year-old man and there’s just so much you can do at that age to try and keep up.
“They have got plenty of people there who have got good leadership qualities who could take over.
“It is obvious that at his age and the state Zimbabwe is in, he is not able to provide the leadership that could get the country out of its predicament,” he said.
Mr. Khama said the instability in Zimbabwe was damaging Botswana’s efforts to wean itself off mining, which accounted for 20 per cent of GDP and nearly 60 per cent of exports.
He said the sit-tight syndrome and unrest in Zimbabwe was forcing more and more Zimbabweans to leave their country.
Mr. Khama said Botswana is home to an estimated 100,000 Zimbabweans and a fraction of the three million believed to be in South Africa.
“Botswana’s jails held significant numbers of Zimbabweans.
“It is a big concern; it is a problem for all of us in the region and it is a burden. There’s no doubt about that,’’ he said.
Botswana, the world’s largest producer of diamonds, shares 800 km of border with Zimbabwe.
The country has felt the full effects of its neighbour’s economic collapse under the weight of political violence and hyper inflation since 2000.
