Politics › Improve Power Supply, Not Tariffs, Labour Union Tells Buhari by emamos(op): 3:23pm On Feb 08, 2016 |
The National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria on Sunday said the Federal Government must ensure steady power supply before increasing electricity tariffs. A statement issued in Kaduna by the Secretary General of the Union, Issa Aremu, said the group support the planned picketing of electricity distribution companies by the organised labour.
“We hereby declare our total support for the planned picketing by labour and civil society allies of all offices of the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide, including Abuja, on Monday Feb. 8, to protest the unilateral and unlawful hike of electricity tariffs. “We commend Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership for this mass action for improved power supply instead of incessant non-service charges.”
Aremu advised President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently revisit the report of the 2014 National Conference and implement the holistic recommendations for the power sector. He said that the Federal Government should not allow the increase in tariff “by the underperforming generating and distribution companies.”
“The point cannot be overstated; Power/Energy is so strategic to the industrialisation and the wellbeing of the people,’’ the former Vice President of the NLC said. He also appealed to the federal government to urgently review the privatisation contracts with the electricity Generation Companies (GenCos) and DisCos. Aremu said the firms should be given a two- year time-frame “to allow them stabilise and provide efficient power supply to Nigerians before they can contemplate any tariff increase. ”
The General Secretary further said that there should be more transparency in all future sales of the nation’s assets. “We reject the hike in electricity tariffs and hereby call on our members across the country and all well meaning Nigerians to come out and join NLC protest to drive home the fact that the unilateral and unlawful hike of electricity tariffs is unacceptable.“ Aremu said the textile union, instead, called for improvement in power supply.
“The point cannot be overstated. Between 30 per cent and 35 per cent of textile and garment manufacturing costs are energy related expenses. “ Without electrification, there can be no industrialisation. “ The promise and expectation that President Buhari will revive textile industry generally is not possible without electricity, ’’ the labour leader said. According to Aremu, it is time for the Buhari-led administration to critically review the power sector reform with a view to increasing public sector investment http://sunnewsonline.com/new/improve-power-supply-not-tariffs-labour-union-tells-buhari/. |

Politics › Saraki May Be Going Through Corruption Trial, But We Stand By Him - Abdullahi by emamos(op): 3:07pm On Feb 08, 2016 |
The Nigerian Senate has rejected calls for the resignation of its president, Bukola Saraki, following Supreme Court ruling that upheld his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. This was disclosed by the Senate spokesperson, Aliyu Abdullahi, who said he was speaking “on behalf of my colleagues” in a statement on Monday. He said there was no basis for the Senate President to resign, insisting that Mr. Saraki’s ordeal was politically motivated and not about any anti-corruption fight. “From the beginning of the trial last September, we have declared that this case is not about any fight against corruption. It is simply a case of political vendetta. “Our position remains the same. We still believe that the case is politically motivated,” he said. On this ground, he stressed that “we want to state categorically that there is no basis for the call on the Senate President to resign until after the matter is decided in that final judicial forum. Such a call at this time is premature, mischievous and unwarranted”. Last Friday, the Supreme Court rejected Mr. Saraki’s appeal against the competence and jurisdiction of the Code of Conduct Tribunal to try him for 13-count charge of false asset declaration slammed on him by the federal government. The development generated renewed calls on Mr. Saraki to resign as he faces corruption trial, with the Unity Forum, an anti-Saraki group, and Like Minds, a pro-Saraki group squabbling over the subject. In separate interviews with PREMIUM TIMES, on Sunday, Kabiru Marafa Of Unity Forum, asked Mr Saraki to resign to save the image of the National Assembly but the call was rejected by Dino Melaye of Like Minds caucus who said Mr. Saraki’s trial amounted to a plot to “mess with the National Assembly”. Giving further reason to reject the call for Mr. Saraki’s resignation, the Senate spokesperson added, “We also noted that the decision of the Supreme Court given last Friday was on preliminary matters arising from the commencement of the trial. The trial proper is yet to begin. And since the fundamental principle in our legal system is that a defendant is deemed innocent until proven guilty, we have decided to patiently observe the proceedings until the case runs its full circle in the nation’s final judicial forum.” He expressed the support of his colleagues for Mr. Saraki, saying “We stand by him as he goes through the trial at the CCT where we believe he will be able to prove his innocence.” “We also call on members of the public to ignore the ranting of a few Senators who having failed to get the wish of their sponsors done on the floor of the Senate are now launching media campaign against the leadership of the Senate,” he added. Mr. Abdullahi said the Senate is stable and focused on “objective consideration and timely passage” of the 2016 budget proposal. “We also want to say that we will not make any further statement on this case until the matter has been decided in the final judicial forum,” said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/198155-saraki-may-going-corruption-trial-love-senate.html |

Politics › Assets Trial: Lawan Faction Regroups To Force Saraki Out by emamos(op): 1:46pm On Feb 07, 2016 |
There were indications on Saturday that senators opposed to Senate President Bukola Saraki under the aegis of the Senate Unity Forum, had regrouped to force Saraki out of the seat. The new move to force the senate president out of office is coming on the heels of the Friday decision of the Supreme Court that his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal should continue. The highest court in the land had affirmed the propriety of Saraki’s trial, on 13 counts of false assets declaration, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. It was gathered that the Lawan group, as part of measures to force Saraki to resign, would also spearhead a call for the recall of their colleagues who are insisting on Saraki as the leader of the upper chamber. The SUF, which supported Senator Ahmed Lawan for the senate presidency last year, had kicked against Saraki’s emergence as the president of the senate. A member of the group, who confided in SUNDAY PUNCH, said the SUF had not given up on moves to force Saraki out of the senate presidency. He said, “Although, we do not have the numerical strength to remove the man, in the days ahead, we are reaching out to senators in the other camp. We will make them see why Saraki should resign because of the integrity of the senate. “This is besides calling on Nigerians to recall their representatives, who fail to mount pressure on Saraki to resign. It is not a question of impeachment, but insisting on the man’s resignation.” When contacted, the spokesperson for the SUF, Senator Kabir Marafa, told one of our correspondents in Abuja that what the group had expected Saraki to do was to voluntarily resign his position. He added that since Saraki would not resign, Nigerians needed to speak up on the issue. He said, “If the senate president refused to step aside, we expect Nigerians especially those who voted for us to represent them at the senate to ask questions. We expect them to ask us why we failed to take action despite the bad image that the development is creating for the federal parliament.” “However, if the senate president refuses to resign and neither the leadership nor the entire Senate mounts any pressure on him to do so, then we would call on Nigerians to recall all their representatives in the Senate because we have failed in our responsibilities. Another member of the SUF from the South West geopolitical zone, who craved anonymity said, the issue of impeachment was unnecessary because the senate president would have his fate determined at the court. He said, “Why talking of impeachment when the man is battling with serious criminal prosecution. How do you expect such a person to continue to lead us after he would have been declared guilty? The leadership of the Senate will take appropriate action when the time comes” But Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP, Imo East), a member of the pro-Saraki group, ruled out any idea of impeachment against Saraki. Anyanwu, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Relations, said the upper chamber had moved on beyond the leadership crisis and insisted that the senators who were in support of Saraki were more than those who were possibly against him. Last year, 81 out of the 109 senators passed a vote of confidence on Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and other principal officers appointed by the various caucuses of the chamber, to run the affairs of the 8th Senate. But Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed confidence that he will be victorious during his impending trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Senate President, Yusuph Olaniyonu, stated this in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday. He said that his principal, Bukola Saraki, would be victorious after his trial at the CCT http://www.punchng.com/assets-trial-lawan-faction-regroups-to-force-saraki-out/ |

FORMERgovernor of Abia State, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, has been ordained by God to represent the Igbo nation for any discussion with the Federal Government to succeed, a Benin-based cleric, Prophet Jordan Iwuala, has declared. Prophet Iwuala said the agitation in the Southeast would fail, if any other person is picked. Iwuala, who is the General Overseer of the Redemption Tabernacle Church of All Nations, disclosed this while releasing his 2016 prophecies for the country. He said God revealed that President Mohammadu Buhari could avoid being assassinated, if he allows certain elders to use three pieces of old N20 notes to pray for him. Prophet Iwuala warned the Federal Government to prepare for the use of chemical weapons by the Boko Haram group, saying the insurgents would shift their operations to western part of the country especially Lagos State. He also prophesied the death of 106 APC members in an accident. His words: “I saw 106 APC party members die in an accident. Three upstairs buildings for students under commissioning by former Governor of Akwa Ibom, Godswill Akpabio collapsed and killed people.” “I saw Oshiomhole in charge of Petroleum industry. I saw mass slaughter of old politicians nationwide and the public applauded the action. I saw a structure carrying the World Olympic Games collapse to rubbles.” “Former deputy speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, should pray against death, humiliation and disgrace.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/god-has-ordained-orji-kalu-to-speak-for-the-igbo-prophet/ |

A victim of Boko haram insurgents currently taking refuge in Jos, the Plateau state capital has warned the federal government against the idea of bringing back Chibok girls into the country. She said doing so might spell doom for the country’ anti-terrorism stance. Hajiya Aishatu who gave the warning in an interview in Jos said, “Bringing back chibok girls would amount to importing Vampires into the Country, the campaign for Chibok girls is not in the interest of this country. Hajiya Aishatu Bala, who hails from Bama Village in Maiduguri but was lucky to escaped to Jos during the heat of insurgency war in the north east said, “Chibok girls are not existing anywhere in the world, most of them had been used as suicide bombers by those who abducted them. She said, “Young girls involved in suicide attacks in the last two years till date were the Chibok girls, it will be a waste of time for anyone to be talking of rescuing Chibok girls.” The victim who saw the killing of her husband and two children before her narrow escape advised the federal government to watch the activities of those involved in the Brink Back our Girls Campaigner base in Abuja because those involved are acting on sheer ignorance or they are not sincere to the nation. “If at all Chibok girls exist anywhere, bringing them back to Nigeria will even spell doom for this country because they have been trained to see the country as the land of evil men,” she said.
