Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has denied owning any property in Dubai, United Arab Emirate or any other foreign country. Akpabio in a statement on Friday by his his media assistant, Anietie Ekong, challenged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to seize any money found in a foreign bank account bearing his name. Akpabio The Senate Minority Leader was denying reports that accused him of makiing a secret attempt to withdraw $7.2 billion from banks in Dubai, United Arab Emirate, through channels in the Central Bank of Nigeria. It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had recently signed agreements with the United Arab Emirate on the repatriation of Nigeria’s stolen funds deposited in that country. This move is believed to have unsettled corrupt, former and serving Nigerians officials, who have unexplained wealth and property there. Stating that the media report against him was sponsored by his political traducers, Akpabio said the government should investigate the source of such money and also prosecute its owner. According to him, “We challenge these purveyors of falsehood to publish the full details of the purported $7.2 billion account and we urge the Federal Government of Nigeria to seize such sum and prosecute the owner if it does exist. People should learn to accept the outcome of elections and stop this kind of dangerous propaganda in the name of politics,” said Akpabio http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/605335/. |

As the ongoing probe of $2.1billion arms deals continues, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday gave “ThisDay” publisher Prince Nduka Obaigbena a two-week ultimatum to refund N670million allegedly collected for unexecuted contracts. Obaigbena told investigators that he never benefitted from slush funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). He said the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan paid the said sums to “ThisDay” and the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) as compensation for the bombing of the newspaper house by Boko Haram and the seizure of copies of many newspapers by the military. He said there was a presidential proclamation by former President Jonathan that “ThisDay” will be compensated for the loss to Boko Haram. He said Jonathan made the pledge after an inspection visit to the newspaper. Obaigbena was quizzed for two days on the activities of General Hydrocarbons and inflow into the company’s account from ONSA. A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “What we are investigating is General Hydrocarbons. Records from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) indicated that Nduka Obaigbena is a director of the company. “ONSA reported that General Hydrocarbons was one of the companies that received payments purportedly for contracts without contract documents or approval. “Between December 8, 2014 and May 23, 2015, Obaigbena received N670million from ONSA. The reasons stated on the payment mandates are as follows: First tranche of N150million(environmental security project) and the remaining tranches(payment for energy consultancy) “Obaigbena said he was paid compensation of N550 million for the bombing of “ThisDay” office in Abuja but there is no nexus between this payment and the money he collected for contracts. None of the sums shows that what he got from ONSA was compensation. “The complaint before us is that the company was given money without contractual agreement. “By all records, Obaigbena was paid for unexecuted contracts. It is government’s funds and he has to refund the N670million, “ an EFCC official said last night. Another source privy to the investigation said: “The EFCC has given Obaigbena a maximum of two weeks to refund the amount he collected from ONSA. “Obaigbena has signed an undertaking to refund the money in question. The anti-graft commission has also granted him an administrative bail.” On the payment made to NPAN, the source simply said: “Investigation is still in progress.” The source added that EFCC operatives were courteous and Obaigbena was friendly and unperturbed during the investigation http://thenationonlineng.net/efcc-gives-obaigbena-two-week-ultimatum-to-refund-n670m/ |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as “comical” Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony of Yahaya Bello as Kogi State governor, given that he did not participate in the overall election. Yahaya Bello The Nation Newspaper Mr. Bello was selected to enter the governorship seat following the death of the original candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abubakar Audu, who died mere hours after the election results were announced. In a statement, signed by Professor Adewale Oladipo the PDP National Secretary, the Party said that since Mr. Bello cannot claim the overall winning votes in the election, he is only a “shadow-chasing passerby” occupying the Governor’s house in Kogi State. The statement went on to note that the supposed swearing-in ceremony has no basis, given the votes cast during the election. “The people of Kogi are aware that the man being paraded by the APC is not the person they exercised confidence in at the election as he scored a paltry 6885 votes in the so-called supplementary election against the 204,877 votes polled by the PDP candidate, Idris Wada in the overall election,” the PDP’s statement read. It added that being a law abiding party, the PDP is urging its members and the people of Kogi State to remain calm and not despair over what it called “this slap on democracy”. The courts, it said, will soon deliver justice with regards to the ture governor who possesses the mandate of the majority at the polls lalasticlala, obinoscopy http://saharareporters.com/2016/01/27/yahaya-bello-%E2%80%98-excursion%E2%80%99-kogi-government-house-pdp-says. |

Alhaji Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress and winner of the Kogi governorship election was Wednesday morning sworn in as the executive governor of the state amid tears of mixed feelings. Bello who emerged victorious after a run-off was conducted following the death of Prince Abubakar who was earlier picked as the party’s flagbearer in an inconclusive election, took his oath of office at the Lokoja New stadium. In his speech immediately after he inspected the guard of Honour in a motorcade, Bello who was sworn in by Justice Nasir Ajana, Chief Justice of Kogi State, wept. He recalled that he did not grow up to know his father, having lost him at very early stage. Eulogising his mother as a young widow, he noted: “Hajia Hawawu Bello struggled to raise me up as a young widow (weeps). The governor also pledged to be fair and honest in all his dealings in matters of the state, while maintaining that Kogi people should take him as their own governor whose plans are for the good of the state. “I will be fair to all Kogites and I belong to everybody and belong to nobody,” he Said He revealed that he had already developed an economic blueprint for the state which his administration would implement almost immediately, while also calling for support of everybody in the best interest of the State. He lamented the non-payment of workers salaries and endemic corruption in the state’s civil service, reiterating that his administration will commence payment of workers salaries as soon as possible. In his words: My administration has zero tolerance for corruption and it remains so and I think Kogites should be guided in this direction,” he noted. “I understand that workers in the state have not been paid for 4 months at the state and over a year for local governments. We will start payment as soon as possible,” he said. Bello commended the late Prince Abubakar Audu, maintaining that his administration would immortalize him for his good work as a politician. “I want to commend the late politician, Prince Abubakar Audu. My administration will immortalize him for the good work he did when he governed the state,” he said. On his part, Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura commended the people of Kogi State for the choice of the All Progressives Congress which brought Yahaya Bello to power. He urged Kogites to Accord Bello the needed support that would make him succeed. “Kogi people have done well to have voted the All Progressives Congress and having done that, I urge them to support Bello to enable him deliver,” Al-Makura maintained. Politics › Fayose Denies Telling Aregbesola To Beg Buhari Not To Probe Him, Says ‘I Will Ne by emamos(op): 8:47am On Jan 27, 2016 |
The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has insisted that he has no reason whatsoever to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, despite its internal crises. The governor made this affirmation in Osogbo on Tuesday when he paid a visit to the Government House, Osogbo, in company of about 50 dignitaries, including the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Kola Oluwawole. The governor said he read on the internet that he was coming to Osogbo to beg Aregbesola to plead with President Muhammadu Buhari not to probe him. He said, “I have not come here for that; neither have I come to announce my defection from the PDP. I will never leave the PDP for any party. This is my first official visit to any APC state in Nigeria. I am not in Osogbo to ask Aregbesola to help me beg (the President) as being speculated in some quarters. We are all Yoruba, politics is like water; it can flow anywhere. “I believe in the Yoruba race; the race comes first before the office of the governor. The race is eternal while that of governor is temporal. We must watch today to be guided by tomorrow. I am here for the unity of Yoruba as it affects the Oodua, our progenitor. “I will remain in the PDP to play the role of the opposition because without opposition in a democracy, there will be dictatorship and those promoting dictatorship in a democracy will end up in the stomach of dictators.” Fayose stressed that Yoruba people needed to unite irrespective of their political or religious affiliations to ward off blackmail and oppression. He said, “There is need for Yoruba people to come together irrespective of political parties to protect the interest of the Yoruba man and protect their leaders from being blackmailed or oppressed. “There is the need for improved economic ties among Yoruba states. Whatever good thing a state is doing can be copied by other states.” On his part, Aregbesola who lauded Fayose for the visit, stressed the need for state governments to create economic ties that would rescue the people from poverty. Health › Lassa Fever: Rivers Declare ‘operation Kill All Rats’ by emamos(op): 8:17am On Jan 27, 2016 |
The government of Rivers State has declared an emergency on Lassa fever. It is tagged ‘Operation kill all Rats’. Five persons and a medical doctor have died of the virus. The Ministry of Environment declared the emergency to create awareness on the disease and the need to keep rats off homes and environments. Commissioner of Health Dr. Theophillus Odagme, who spoke toThe Nationyesterday said its sister ministry is undertaking the step to consolidate on the efforts of the Health ministry in the fight against Lassa. Odagme said the three suspected cases, which were admitted to the Port Johnson Borokri treatment centre, including a nursing mother and her baby (index case), tested negative and have been discharged. He noted that over 400 persons have been placed under watch following the deaths but none has tested positive, even as he was optimistic that if residents keep to the rules, the state might be cleared next month. “Last week, three persons were admitted into one of the treatment centres. Two of the patients were referred from private clinics; one is related to a late victim, while the other came from a public hospital. “Samples were taken for analysis, but the results came out negative. They were stabilised and discharged for proper treatment of their cases. “As at the last count, 403 persons were being monitored but the first set of 60 placed under watch following the index case, have been discharged after completing the 21 days virus incubation period without manifesting any symptom. “The contact tracing teams (13 teams) are still on, meeting and monitoring them every day. There is a massive sensitisation going on in markets, churches and mosques to educate residents on the need to improve their personal hygiene and clean their surroundings as preventive measures. One person has died of the disease in Ebonyi State. Governor Dave Umahi confirmed the death yesterday in Abakaliki at a town hall meeting. He said the deceased, a student, whose identity could not be ascertained, died on Monday. The governor directed that residents close to the vicinity of the deceased should be monitored and urged the people to seek proper medical attention should they suspect anything. “It may be Lassa fever and if it is detected early, it can be treated than when it reaches an advanced stage when it may be difficult to save the victim.” Umahi thanked the Federal Government for donating virology equipment to fight the disease, which he said were being installed and will be put to use soon. 1.7 million people in Ekiti State practice open defecation, the European Union (EU) Senior Expert on Sanitation, Tope Babalobi, has said. He spoke yesterday during a breakfast programme on the Ekiti Television (EKTV), Daybreak Nigeria. Babalobi, who is also the National Chairman of Water and Sanitation Network, urged the people to maintain a clean environment to avoid falling victim of Lassa fever. He noted that proper sanitation and good hygienic practices would keep rats and rodents, believed to be vectors of Lassa fever, at bay. “Rodents and rats have no business coming to your house if it is clean. Eateries, restaurants, schools, shops, markets must prioritise sanitation http://thenationonlineng.net/lassa-fever-rivers-declare-operation-kill-all-rats/. |
