Senate President Bukola Saraki saidon Fridaythat he was ready to face trial over alleged false asset declaration at the Code of Conduct Tribunal in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court. Saraki, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said that he was sure of being vindicated at the trial. He also insisted that the whole issue surrounding the trial by the CCT was not before the Supreme Court, adding that the Court only ruled on some preliminary objections. The statement reads: “After listening to the ruling of the Supreme Court in the appeal he filed to challenge the process of arraigning him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki hereby states as follows: “He expresses disappointment over the Judgment of the apex court in the country on the six grounds of his appeal “He however will like to put it on record that the facts of the substantial matter are not before the Supreme Court since the apex court was only invited to rule on some preliminary issues in the process of commencing the trial. “The Senate President believes he will have his day in the court to prove his innocence of the charges preferred against him during the trial proper. “Dr Saraki will like to thank everyone who has expressed support for him from the beginning of the case. He assures everyone that at the end of the day truth will prevail and justice will be served.” lalasticlala http://tribuneonlineng.com/cct-i-am-ready-to-face-trial-saraki |

Crime › Witness: NIMASA Paid My Company N72m Without Contract by emamos(op): 6:02pm On Feb 05, 2016 |
The Federal High Court in Lagos Friday heard more tales of alleged cash bazaar by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The fifth prosecution witness, Mr Emeka Emelano, said his company was paid N72 million from NIMASA even though it was not awarded any contract. This is coming three days after a lawyer and businessman, Uche Obilor, disclosed that three of his companies got N905,800 million from NIMASA without bidding for any contract. Emenalo, sole proprietor of O2 Services Plus Nig. Ltd, testified during the trial of a former NIMASA Director-General Patrick Akpobolokemi. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged him with converting N2.6billion. He was also accused of defrauding the Federal Government to the tune of N795.2million. Akpobolokemi was arraigned before Justice Ibrahim Buba along with three others – Captain Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan – and three companies, namely Blockz and Stonz Limited, Kenzo Logistics Limited and Al-Kenzo Logistic Limited. In a 22-count charge, they were accused of converting a total of N2, 658,957,666 between December 23, 2013 and May 28 last year. The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the counts. Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness said his company specialises in Agro allied services. According to him, sometimes in 2015, his younger brother, Uche Emelano sought to use his company to obtain a contract from NIMASA. He said that his brother informed him that Nwakuche would facilitate the contract. According to the witness, his brother instructed him to transfer any money paid to his company’s account as would be directed as soon as he is alerted. The witness said as soon as he began to receive alerts, he informed his brother, who in turn informed the third accused. Emelano said last June 18, he received an alert for N14.2 million and a further alert of N21 million; on March 15, 2015 he received an alert for N21 million and on May 4 he received N16 million. According to the witness, he was instructed to transfer the money to accounts belonging to Blockz and Stonz and Juan. He informed the court that his company did not execute any contract for NIMASA to have necessitated payment of the various funds. The witness added that he was also unaware of the nature of the contract for which his brother utilised his company’s account to obtain money from NIMASA. “I did not benefit anything from these monies paid. I only requested that the sum of N300, 000 be left in the account to offset bank transfer charges,” he said. Under cross examination by counsel to the third accused, Mr. Lanre Olayinka, the witness stressed that he did not enjoy any benefit from the sums paid into his account. Olayinka then tendered a statement of account before the witness, and drew his attention to a cheque issued in his name for the sum of N100, 000. Olayinka asked: “Mr Emelano, you claimed you did not benefit from the monies paid into your account, but from the document before you, on March 6, 2015 a cheque was issued in your name for the sum of N100,000. “If the money left in your account is for bank charges as you claim, how come you issued a cheque for the amount in your name? what was the purpose of the money?” The witness responded: “I took transport,” generating laughter in the packed courtroom. Justice Buba adjourned till February16 for continuation of cross examination lalasticlala, obinoscopy http://thenationonlineng.net/witness-nimasa-paid-my-company-n72m-without-contract/. |

Crime › Court Sends Judge To Prison For Alleged Fraud by emamos(op): 1:55pm On Feb 05, 2016 |
A Federal High Court sitting in Gombe State on Friday remanded an area court judge, Umar Y. Gwani, for alleged fraud. The Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, which filed the case, accused the judge of collecting money from the public through false pretence and conspiracy. The counsel to EFCC, Zarami Mohammed, said the accused conspired with two others to sell plots of land belonging to Gombe State government to the public through false pretence. He said the judge failed to contact the Ministry of Land and Survey and Local Government Area before selling the plots of land to the public. He also said the judge later had denied receiving payments for the eight or nine plots sold for N7 million. The accused judge appeared before the Federal High court on a four- count charge. Speaking to journalists after the hearing, his counsel, Mukaan Kingsley, said that he was surprised to see that the listed count charges were different from what transpired in court http://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/nnorth-east/198014-court-sends-judge-prison-alleged-fraud.html. |

Politics › Nigerians’ll Starve To Death By 2050, If… —presidency by emamos(op): 7:40am On Feb 05, 2016 |
Presidency, yesterday, raised alarm that Nigerians would starve to death by 2050 if nothing was done to ensure an all year round farming. It also said with the rate the country was going, the population would by 2050 rise to 509 million. According to the Federal Government, the present mode of farming will not sustain the increasing population in the country. It noted that there was the urgent need for all major stakeholders to work towards improving mechanized farming and irrigation, to ensure an all year farming to avert the problem. Speaking, yesterday, during the budget defence of 2016, Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said the country had the capacity to grow the grass required by the cattle to consume. He said: “We have written to state governments to encourage them to develop dams and canals so that agriculture becomes an all year round activity and it is not confined to the rainy season alone. “Besides, by 2050, Nigeria population will be very close to 500 million at the current rate of growth. This is just 34 years from now. If we carry on at the current rate of one crop per year, with very low mechanization, Nigerians run the risk of starving to death. He said: “We intend to intensify and consolidate on the local staples, the yams, the cassava, the beans, especially rice and wheat. Both of which consume $11 million per day in import. The figure is going down a bit. We can’t afford that in the long run because we don’t even have the resources. “The ministry has put necessary machinery in motion to stop the constant bloody clashes between herdsmen and farmers. We have decided we are going to develop massive paddocks across the country. “What the cows are looking for is grass and water. We have the capacity to grow the grass we want not just any kind of grass but highly nutritive grass for the cows to eat. If it can be done in Kenya, Saudi Arabia, there is no reason why we can’t do it here. ‘’There is sizable provision for grassing at hinterland, by developing water, drilling of boreholes and small dams to irrigate those areas already mapped out. In the process we hope that the cattle herdsmen would have a more stable life.” lalasticlala, obinoscopy http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/nigeriansll-starve-to-death-by-2050-if-presidency/ |

Culture › Ooni, Owa Battle At Osun Monarchs’ Meeting by emamos(op): 7:34am On Feb 05, 2016 |
The atmosphere preceding yesterday’s monthly meeting of the Osun State Council of Obas was charged. Reason: There was an argument over the seating arrangement. The Owa Obokun, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, did not allow the advance team of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to place his seat at a vantage position. The vice-chairman of the council, Oba Aromolaran, allegedly refused to allow the Ife team place the Ooni’s seat in front of him. The Ooni is the permanent chairman of the council It was learnt that Oba Aromolaran, who had arrived earlier before Oba Ogunwusi, allegedly stopped the Ooni’s advance team. It was further learnt that the dress of one of the emissaries (emese) was torn during the “scuffle”. Theemeseswere said to have insisted on placing the seat in a particular position. They claimed that they were acting on the Ooni’s instruction. The meeting was postponed indefinitely. Governor Rauf Aregbesola invited the monarchs to a meeting at the Government House. It was gathered that Oba Aromolaran left the Government House a few minutes before Oba Ogunwusi arrived. The Ooni went to visit the Owa at his palace in Ilesa. Oba Ogunwusi was said to have told Oba Aromolaran that he was not interested in fighting for any position but for peace among Yoruba obas. The Ooni was also quoted to have said that “you are one of the prominent traditional rulers in Yorubaland and it is in my own interest and that of the larger Yoruba people to relate very well with the Owa”. “I have just spent about three months on the throne now while you, Owa, have spent about 34 years. “It is my responsibility to visit you first because you have been on the throne for long. “It has been said by God that I should come and liberate Yorubaland and to ensure peace and unity. “I am not engaging in any leadership supremacy with anybody.” Owa reportedly told the Ooni that “your visit is a surprise to me and it is the least expected. Now that you have come to show a hand of friendship, I will now join your unity train to unify the Yoruba.”
The Ooni’s Director of Media and Publicity, Moses Olafare, said the Ooni’s position as the council’s permanent chairman was incontrovertible. Olafare said: “Ooni would not want to be drawn into what happened. “But he (Ooni) remains the permanent chairman according to law. “The issue of who becomes the chairman is a creation of law and can only be reversed by law. “Whoever is not satisfied with the arrangement should either go to court or the House of Assembly and seek a review of the law.” lalasticlala, obinoscopy http://thenationonlineng.net/ooni-owa-battle-at-osun-monarchs-meeting/ |
