Health › Why Nigeria Can't Win Lassa Fever Battle As Ebola - Health Minister by emamos(op): 9:18am On Jan 21, 2016
The Federal Government has assured that it is committed to ending the epidemic of Lassa fever this year.
The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, gave the assurance on Wednesday while addressing State House correspondents. "We are committed to signing the obituary of the Lassa fever this year", the minister said. He, however, noted that the country could win the battle against Lassa fever the same way it won against Ebola because the latter was a single importation to Nigeria, while the former was endemic in the country. "We cannot win the battle against Lassa fever the same way we won the one against Ebola. Ebola happened to be a single importation to Nigeria. Lassa fever is endemic in Nigeria. In 2012, we had upsurge in 26 states. So, it is there, but I can assure you that with what we put in place this year, we will sign it off", he said. The minister also stated that the current outbreak of Lassa fever was not resurgence as it had been endemic in the country over the years. "And as I said in numerous occasions, we have these outbreaks. In 2012, we had the highest. We had 1, 700 cases and that declined. Last year, we had 441 cases. And what has happened is that for the first time in the history of the country, we are being transparent and open, and we are telling the entire world what the situation is. And that is what is different. We are also concerned."

Politics › More Looters Will Be Jailed This Year; Nothing Wrong In Handcuffing Metuh – EFCC by emamos(op): 8:46am On Jan 21, 2016
Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Mustafa Magu has told Nigerians to expect the prosecution of those who milked the nation’s treasury dry.
He said anyone found guilty will go to jail this year.
Magu, fondly called The General, said every stakeholder seemed to be more serious now about fighting corruption.
“From all indications, the judges are more serious, everybody is cooperating and this year, we will see more politically-exposed persons convicted. We will flush out corrupt people,” he said.
Magu, who spoke during a visit to The Nation Newspaper’s headquarters in Lagos yesterday, said he was mobilising support, opinions, ideas and strategies that were necessary to strengthen the anti-graft battle.
“We need more support; it is about Nigeria, not an individual, the fight is for everybody, from the media we have to go to the grassroots, we will take it to children in the schools; we have to tell the children that corruption is bad, tell them why there is no chair in the classroom.
“We will sensitise everybody on the evil of corruption. We need to let people know that corruption is bad because some people don’t seem to know,” Magu said.
“The impunity is too much. Sometimes I shed tears in the morning before I go to the office. It is just unbelievable; the rot is terrible. What I am saying is that people who know they have stolen our commonwealth should bring it back.
“People arrogate things to themselves. They have taken our money and are bold enough to say they are not going to return it. The money belongs to the people; they should return the money quietly; let there be voluntary compliance. Let them voluntarily come out to say ‘this is what I have stolen’ and the government will take it. I think that is the best thing to do,” the EFCC chief added.
Magu commented on the handcuffing of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spokesperson Olisa Metuh when he appeared in court, saying, there is nothing wrong in handcuffing an accused.
“It is not coming from us (Nigerian Prisons Service, NPS, brought Metuh to court), but there is nothing wrong with that actually. They have a right to use their discretion; you are not there, there must be reason. There are instances when you handcuff a suspect, but let them explain themselves”, he said

Politics › Metuh In Handcuffs Is Normal, Lesser Criminals Get Worse Treatment – Oshiomhole by emamos(op): 8:20pm On Jan 20, 2016
Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday said the handcuffing of Mr. Olisa Metuh, Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was no big deal.
Speaking during a meeting with the new Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, led by Sir Roland Osakwe in Benin City, the governor wondered why the scenario has generated so much noise.
Oshiomhole said: “I saw some headlines querying why Metuh should be in handcuffs. If people who steal he-goats, dried grass cutters are in handcuffs, I have been to the Police Station several times and I see young men who rob not more than N500,000 naira in handcuffs, they are paraded and made to sit on the floor. Why should certain set of criminals be treated as if they are not suspected criminals and serious crimes at that?
“When you all reported lavishly how under the former President, the former Defence Chief set up a Military Tribunal to try soldiers who ran away from battle field and they were condemned to death, it was only Femi Falana who was consistent in fighting their case.
“Those are Nigerians who were to be killed for running away because they couldn’t confront a Boko Haram that was well armed while they were asked to go and fight with their bare hands and we were told that weapons, ammunition and everything had been provided.
“When Borno Governor said, ‘look, our Armed Forces are fighting with bare hands’, he was told to shut up. Now it is clear from current revelations that the money that would have been used to arm these young men who joined the army with pride and who on a good day have the courage to fight not only at home but abroad, but because they didn’t have arms, they ran away. They were sentenced to death.
“Thanks to Buhari, some have been commuted now to various terms of imprisonment which I applaud and I think even that one should further be reviewed, they should submit their uniform but remain free people.
“Now, those who shared that money, this is not the usual security money, this is special appropriation to fight Boko Haram, $2.1 billion, people just shared it, everybody was using their son, co-opting young children into this while other people’s children were sentenced to death.
“And anybody who partakes in that and they put him in handcuffs, they say, why should he be in handcuffs because he is an elite and the media will report it without also showing us pictures of some Nigerians whose fathers are not known, but are not less Nigerian than any of us, who are always not only in handcuffs but are put on the floor in various police stations and paraded even before they are charged to court and we all look at them and turn to the next pictures, it doesn’t attract a commentary.
“Why should some criminals just be celebrated even when we all can feel the amount of damage, the consequences of their rascality on our collective wellbeing? I think the media should support the President. This is not President Buhari’s fight, and you know he had reminded us that if we don’t kill corruption, it will kill us. Now corruption is fighting back.
“I read one article and I was shocked with the ease at which he attempted to turn logic upside down. He said that Chief Anthony Anenih has shown how he shared the money he got from the National Security Adviser that was paid to his bank account unlike other people, he didn’t deny it. Can you deny what they pay to your bank account? If he carried it the way they usually carried money in bullion van, he would have denied it but this time, the policeman in him failed him and the money was paid into his account so he was not at liberty to deny what was documented in a banking transaction.

Politics › APC Chieftains Laud Ambode Over Construction Of 114 LG Roads by emamos(op): 5:35pm On Jan 20, 2016
Some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for the initiative to construct 114 roads in all the 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), saying the project would go a long way in bringing succor to motorists in the state.
The road project, which was flagged off last week, is expected to be completed in the next six months, and would gulp N17.5 billion. The roads were designed to accommodate street lights, walkways and drainages.
Reacting to the development, Director of Publicity of APC in South West, Ayo Afolabi commended Governor Ambode for the initiate to massively develop the nook and cranny of the State.
Afolabi said the government came up with the concept with a view to ensuring that the people at the Local Government, who are the closest to government, also enjoy the dividend of democracy.
He said: “Basically, what the government has done is to make sure that no Local Government is left untouched in terms of infrastructural development. So, in line with that, the Governor has made provision for the construction of two roads in each Local Government areas of the state. This will ensure that every local government will have the opportunity of enjoying infrastructural development”.
He, however, advocated the need for a strict supervision to be put in place to ensure that the job is carried out according to specification.
On his part, Chief Funsho Ologunde, Vice Chairman, Lagos West of APC, said the project was an innovative approach to development of the State by the Governor expressing optimism that when completed, it would impact positively on the socio-economic wellbeing of the State.
Ologunde said: “With 114 roads being worked upon and reconstructed by the 57 councils at the same time and when added to what the State Government is doing, it means at the end of the day we will have about 200 roads being worked upon simultaneously by the two tiers of government in Lagos State.
“That is going to bring a very big relief to motorists in Lagos State and by the time that one is over and another set is embarked upon, you can imagine the multiplier effect on the happiness of Lagosians, on the development on business activities in Lagos State and generally motorists are also going to feel a lot of relief because the breakdown associated with bad road will have been severely dealt with.”
Also, Kanayo Osondu, Chairman Igbo United Political Coalition in APC, said the development was a fulfillment of Governor Ambode’s campaign promise.
He said: “I remember vividly that during the campaign, Governor Ambode promised to fix 20 inner roads per year in each Local Government and we have started with two in each of the 57 councils in the State totaling 114.
“Let’s start from somewhere knowing what the economic situation in the country is right now. Well, we have started from somewhere and by the time we get to the middle of the year, I know that by that time if the Governor has more funds, he will do more,” Osondu said

The Lagos state Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old trader, Chinwe Abasi, for allegedly brutalising a 12-year-old boy, Chinedu Okorie, with hot water in the Apapa area of the state.
Okorie, who is in Junior Secondary School 1, worked as a sales assistant for Abasi, who sold clothing materials in the Oyingbo Market.
Abasi, a mother of two, from Nnewi, Anambra State, allegedly poured hot water on the boy because he collected N100 from a neighbour to buy a pair of socks to wear to school without her knowledge.
According to reports, last Monday when schools resumed, Okorie told Abasi that he would need to buy a pair of socks for school but she allegedly ignored him until Thursday when a neighbour, simply identified as Usman, gave Okorie N100 to buy the pair of socks.
When the trader learnt that the boy had collected money from Usman to buy the pair of socks, she became angry and beat up the 12-year-old who ran into the kitchen during the flogging.
Abasi followed him to the kitchen and allegedly grabbed an electric kettle of boiling water and emptied it on the boy.
The matter was reported at the FESTAC Police Division and the trader was arrested, The Punch reports.
It was gathered that the matter was also reported to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, and a temporary shelter was provided for the boy, where he also received medical attention.
The Enugu state indigene revealed that he was forced to collect the N100 from Usman because he had no other option.
“I told madam (Abasi) last Monday that I needed to buy a pair of socks for school. My teachers would seize my sandals without it. But she did not buy them, and I went to collect money from our neighbour.
“When she saw the pair of socks, she became angry and started to beat me. I ran into the kitchen.
“That was where she grabbed the electric kettle and poured the content ─ hot water ─ on me. It was around 7pm on Thursday,” the 12-year-old boy added.
On her part, Abasi said she did not deliberately brutalise the boy, adding that everyone knew she treated Okorie like her son.
She said, “I sell clothes at the Oyingbo Market. He is my domestic help. I brought him from his village in Enugu State about four years ago.
“On Monday, pupils resumed school, and Chinedu (Okorie) told me he needed a pair of socks and I said I would buy them for him. Unfortunately, when I came back, I forgot. Later, our neighbour said Chinedu collected N100 from him to buy the pair of socks. I was angry.
“I queried him and warned him against the behaviour. On Thursday, I gave him N100 to buy another pair of socks. When he came back, he told me he used the money for something else. So, I beat him up.
“The boy is stubborn. I am not a bad woman.
“There were times when I gave him N1, 000 to go and buy fuel. He would spend three hours and later say he misplaced the money. So, I disciplined him on Thursday.
“He ran into the kitchen, and that was when I mistakenly poured the water on him.
Confirming the arrest, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said “the suspect has been arrested and will be charged to court soon

Politics › N2.6bn Fraud: ‘fashion Designer Got N546m From NIMASA by emamos(op): 7:40am On Jan 20, 2016
The trial of an ex-Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, and five others continued before a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday with a bureau de change operator, Hussein Sabo, testifying against them.
The defendants are being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly converting to their personal use a total of N2, 658,957, 666, belonging to NIMASA between December 23, 2013 and May 28, 2015.
They were on December 4, 2015 arraigned on 22 counts in relation to the offence before Justice Ibrahim Buba.
The accused Akpobolokemi, Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan, Blockz and Stonz Limited and Al-Kenzo Logistic Limited — however pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Sabo was the 3rd witness to be called by the EFCC, which opened its case on Monday to prove its allegations against the accused persons.
Led in evidence by the EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, Sabo, who spoke in pidgin English, told the court that one Muhammed Darlington approached him in March 2014 and told him that the 2nd defendant (Agaba) wanted to buy dollars.
The bureau de change operator said Dalington subsequently took his account number after which huge sums of money were paid into it in several tranches.
For instance, Sabo claimed that he received four payment alerts on March 3, 2014 for the sums of N33.8m, N35m, 20m and 3m, which he helped the accused to change into US dollars.
He also claimed that between March and December 2014 he received six payments in the sums of N85,305,000, N155,300,000, N13,000,000, N10,000,000, and N84,000,000, which he also helped the accused to change into US dollars.
Earlier, a fashion designer, Chukwuemeka Onuoha, who testified as the EFCC’s second witness, had told the court that the defendants used his company, Extreme Vertevex Limited, to siphon N546,802,000 from the coffers of NIMASA under the guise of a non-existent contract.
Onuoha told the court that though he neither tendered any proposal nor carried out any contract for NIMASA, N546,802,000 was paid by NIMASA into his account with Zenith Bank Plc.
The witness claimed that the disbursement of the money was facilitated by the 3rd defendant (Nwakuche) who he knew when he was in secondary school.
Onuoha narrated to the court how in 2003, shortly after the 3rd defendant secured an employment with NIMASA, he (Onuoha) approached the 3rd defendant and pleaded with him to consider him for any contract in the agency
He claimed that shortly after he made the request, the 3rd defendant called him on the telephone to enquire if he had any registered company that could be used for transactions as well as the company’s accounts.
Onuoha told the court that not long after he supplied the details of his company and his bank account to the 3rd defendant, he received several alerts from his bank totaling N546,802,000.
For instance, he told the court that in August 2014 he received N21,802,000; on November 6, 2014, he received N318m; and on November 25, 2014 he received an alert for payment of the sum of N207m into his bank account.
He added that when he enquired from the 3rd defendant what the money was meant for, he was told to wait for further instructions.
Onuoha told the court that he was later instructed to transfer the money to different accounts by the 3rd defendant.
Under cross examination by Akpobolokemi’s lawyer, Dr. Joseph Nwobike (SAN), Onuoha, however, told the court he had never met Akpobolokemi or received any money from him.
Justice Buba has adjourned further hearing in the matter till February 2,5, 16 and 19, 2016

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, has denied collecting a dime from the former National Security Adviser, Lt. Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
Secondus was reacting to reports in some quarters that he also benefited from the Dasuki largesse.
Speaking with Punch, the party chieftain said he was never involved in the sharing and collection.
Four national officers of the main opposition party had called on those involved to separate their cases from the party since they got the money from Dasuki, using their individual company accounts.
They also called on those holding offices in the party to quit in order for them to have time to face the court cases instituted against them.
Among those involved, two are holding national positions in the party.
They are the Acting Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Haliru Mohammed and the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh.
He said, “I was not mentioned among those that collected money from the former NSA. I saw some reports linking me with it in either their headlines or body of their stories.
“That is wrong. Have you seen my name or company among those who took money? The answer is no! I didn’t collect a dime from the former NSA.”
