The Federal Government has cautioned Gabon and other ECOWAS member states not to dump deportees from their countries in Nigeria. The Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen Abdulrahman Dambazzau, gave the warning on Thursday in Calabar during the evacuation of 617 people including women and children deported from Gabon to Calabar. He warned that the federal government would impound any vessel used in dumping deportees in Nigerian seaports. Dambazzau, who was represented by Mrs Funke Adeuyi, the Comptroller of Immigration, Cross River Command, said that the affected people were dumped at Calabar port since Dec. 26, 2015. He said that other punitive measures including seizure of vessels and payment of fines as stipulated in the ECOWAS charter would be employed to stop the anomaly. “Nigeria will no more tolerate this because of security implications of such actions. “I am here on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Lt.- Gen Abdulrahman Danbazzau, through the Comptroller General of Immigration. “This should be the last time this category of the deportees will be allowed to transit through the Nigerian land borders or ports. “Any country that brings this category of deportees to Nigeria will face the relevant penalty ranging from impounding of their vessels. “Nigeria has a new policy on this type of issue and I am here to reiterate that severe action will be taken by Nigerian government should this continue.” “Most of these people were deported for immigration related offense,’’ he said. Responding on behalf of ambassadors of countries whose nationals were among the deportees, Babacar Mbodi, the Consul General, Republic of Senegal, commended the Nigerian government for safe-keeping of the deportees. He said that arrangements had been concluded to take the deportees to their respective countries through Seme, a border town between Nigeria and Benin Republic. He assured that Senegal would comply with the new federal government’s policy.[irp] The deportees are from Gabon, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Niger, Mali, Chad and Guinea lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2016/01/01/stop-sending-your-deportees-to-nigeria-%e2%80%8bfg-warns-ecowas-member-states/. |

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has said that his party and the Muhammadu Buhari-led government present Nigeria its biggest chance to attain greatness. In his New Year message to Nigerians, Thursday, Mr. Tinubu said it’s time to place the country on the right path. “This path will not be easy as we must press to surmount obstacles that should have been laid behind us long ago,” said Mr. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State. “There are no short cuts to take to greatness, but there also is no reason that we cannot attain that greatness. Our new government offers the country its best chance.” “Thus, we must dedicate ourselves to creating a more perfect nation, one built on justice, peace, unity and prosperity.” Mr. Tinubu urged Nigerians to join hands in a common purpose to defeat insecurity, poverty and corruption and bring back prosperity. “Let us pledge never again to fall victim to these scourges. Let us pledge this year to walk together in strong unity,” he said. “May 2016 go down in history as the year Nigeria reached a higher plain by conquering those things that for so long had set us back. “May this nation rise and become the standard for Africa and the black race that God intends it to be.” lalasticlala http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/196034-new-year-apc-buhari-offer-nigeria-best-path-to-greatness-tinubu.html |

The Federal Government will create no fewer than one million direct jobs in 2016, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said A statement issued by Laolu Akande, his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Publicity, quoted Osinbajo as saying that another one million poor Nigerians would benefit from the first phase of the Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme. The statement, released to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, said that theVP made the remark during an interactive session with a cross section of Nigerian Community in Burkina Faso. Osinbajo was Burkina Faso to represent President Muhammadu Buhari at the inauguration of the newly elected president of that country Roch Marc Christian Kabore. He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had announced job opportunities for 500,000 graduate-youths to be engaged as teachers. He added that an estimated 500,000 non-graduate unemployed people would be trained as artisans. The Vice President explained that the Conditional Cash transfer Scheme was intended to utilise the thrift system to grant loans to market women to enable them improve their businesses and earn decent living. He said the homegrown school feeding programme would not only provide adequate nutrition to school children, but would also boost agriculture, create jobs and wealth locally. Osinbajo assured the Nigerian community that the fight against corruption was a continuous one. He said that the Buhari administration would not only prosecute those involved but also recover all the loot that had been traced. “We will go after Nigeria’s fund wherever it is found and we will recover it,’’ he said, saying “our country is bound for greatness.’’ The Vice President told the Nigerian community that President Buhari was a man to be trusted; a man of integrity. “I am proud of our leadership and this is a great opportunity for the country to be great,’’ he added. In his remarks, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, David Bala, described the one million Nigerians resident in the country as `peaceful and law abiding.’ people. Michael Adeyanju, the leader of the Nigerian Community in Burkina Faso, thanked the federal government for attending the inauguration of the Burkinabe President. He described the gesture as a sign of cordial relationship between both countries. He said Nigeria was the only country that donated 20 Hilux vans to assist the country’s electoral commission, adding that the gesture raised the pride of the Nigerian community . President Muhammadu revealed yesterday that under the immediate past administration, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) operated about 45 bank accounts while the Ministry of Defence had 70 accounts. The president said it was for this reason that his government introduced the Treasury Single Account (TSA). Responding to questions from a team of media executives, the president said, “The (economic) situation now is aggravated by the downturn in the petroleum industry. It is now $39 per barrel and we have debt servicing of about N1.5 trillion and we have commitments on the ground. “We had to reorganise the NNPC. We had to introduce the TSA. There were 45 accounts in the NNPC alone. Ministry of Defence had about 70 accounts. We have got about N1.5 trillion through the TSA. “The oil downturn is very unfortunate for this government. Check previous records. Over 90 per cent (of the budget) was for recurrent expenditure. No country can develop without capital projects. We were in very bad shape”. Buhari further said government parastatals would be realigned in view of the lesser number of ministries the country now has. “The process of government agencies earning monies and spending them and giving government change will have to stop. All government monies have to be paid to the Federation Account and a budget submitted for their operations,” he added lalasticlala http://leadership.ng/news/487772/pmb-tsa-nnpc-operated-45-accounts-military-services-70. |

Politics › US Embargo Forced Jonathan To Buy Arms With Raw Cash –fani-kayode by emamos(op): 4:52am On Dec 31, 2015 |
FORMERAviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has said former president Goodluck Jonathan was forced to buy arms with cash because of the embargo placed on arms purchase. Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, Fani-kayode dismissed a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, who said Jonathan bought arms with raw cash. The former minister said contrary to the impression the present administration wants to create in the minds of Nigerians; there was nothing wrong with buying arms with cash under the previous administration. He explained that the embargo placed on arms purchase by western countries like the United States of America forced Jonathan to purchase arms with cash. He said: “There was an embargo on arms purchase in Nigeria and the military needed the arms to fight against terrorists and the only way arms could be bought was through the black market. Before the 2015 general election, the military had made sufficient gains in the war against terror because they were able to recover 22 local governments from the terrorists, but all that appears to have been reversed after the elections. “Contrary to the assurance given by the present administration, the war against terror has not been won by the military and people are being killed every day. The government had claimed on December 23 that the war against insurgency had been won by the military, but on December 25, some people were killed in Maiduguri, with more casualties in Borno on December 27 and in Adamawa on December 28. It is simply not true that the war against Boko Haram has been won.” He further stated that it is not helpful to continuously blame the present administration for the challenges being faced at the war front but called on Nigerians to come together and support the government in the fight against insurgency. He also advised the government to come clean about the challenges being faced and stop dwelling on actions of the previous administration lalasticlala http://sunnewsonline.com/new/us-embargo-forced-jonathan-to-buy-arms-with-raw-cash-fani-kayode/. |

The convoy of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambodeon Wednesdayapprehended two Airforce cadets in Mile 12 area of the State while dehumanizing an artisan, Dahiru Lawal for allegedly breaking the windscreen of a Chrysler Stratus car with registration number KRD 267 DV. The apprehended Air Force Cadets – Abdullahi Fahad (left) and Peter O. Solomon (right) The cadets – Peters O. Solomon and Abdullahi Fahad, who claimed to be Airforce personnel attached to the Airforce Base in Ikeja, had forced Lawal in the boot of their car after dragging him on the ground for the said offence. Governor Ambode, who was returning from an inspection visit to Agbowa in Ikorodu, saw the situation and swiftly intervened to save Lawal who was gasping for breath. The Governor wondered how such inhuman treatment could be meted to a fellow citizen just for slightly breaking the windscreen of a car. When questioned by journalists, the cadets admitted putting Lawal in the boot of their car. According to them, Lawal tried to escape after breaking the windscreen and ran into the nearby market where they eventually chased and apprehended him. Peters said: “What happened is that the boy broke the windscreen in front of my car. When I stopped, I asked him to come, the boy ran away. We have to drag him back and put him in the boot.” “I kind of threatened his boss that he is working with and when his boss came and looked at what he did to me, that was when I put him inside the boot for the remaining ones to go and call the boss. Not that I locked the boot, I only put him inside the boot, but I did not lock the boot,” he said. Also Abdullahi said himself and Peters were along Mile 12 after visiting a friend when they heard a knack on their windscreen and they saw Lawal attempting to escape. “We now run inside the market and dragged him (Lawal) down. I was even asking who he is working with because I want to see his Oga since I know he cannot repair my damaged windscreen. I want to see the man he is working with so that we can settle everything with him. I now told my colleague that we should hand him over to Airforce police at the Airforce Base,” Abdullahi said. Dahiru Lawal, who was dehumanized by the Air Force Cadets While narrating his ordeal in the hands of the cadets, Lawal who hails from Kaduna State, said he mistakenly damaged the windscreen with the load he carried, and that he took to his heels because he was afraid of what they might do to him. He said: “I ran into the market and they pursued me and caught me inside the market. They started beating me and dragged me to their car.” “I ran because I was afraid of what the cadets might do to me, while my boss and people around begged on my behalf, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.” “The police also came to plead with them to open the boot but they insisted on taking me away and it was at that point that the convoy of the Governor arrived to rescue me from the boot of the car where they kept me,” Lawal said . Politics › Attorney-general Rules Out Plea Bargain For Treasury Looters by emamos(op): 12:02pm On Dec 30, 2015 |
The Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN, has disclosed that there will be no plea bargain for those charged with corruption cases, adding that the federal government had put in place a formidable team of public prosecutors to spearhead the anti-corruption war at various courts in the country. Malami, who made the disclosure yesterday when the BringBackOurGirls campaign movement visited him at his office in Abuja, restated President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to bring all perpetrators of corrupt practices that led to the heightened insurgency to book. According to him, “We have put in place a national prosecution team that comprises all stakeholders for the purpose of prosecuting the charges presented before the courts. “The committee will be saddled with the responsibility of preferring the relevant charges and ensuring that charges are preferred in line with the dictates of the law without compromise.” The nation’s chief law officer noted that corruption cases under past administrations in the country were deliberately compromised during investigation in order to pave the way for criminal suspects to escape the long arm of the law. The convener of the group campaigning for the release of the abducted Chibok girls, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, had raised the issue of plea bargains, to which Malami responded by assuring that steps had been taken to audit such cases with a view to bringing the culprits to justice. He expressed his abhorrence for the policy and pledged the government’s commitment not to compromise the fight against terrorism and financial crimes, adding that, “I cannot imagine someone being responsible for monumental deaths of our citizens and then going scot-free arising from a plea bargain as a policy. “It has never been the policy of the government to compromise on terrorism and financial crimes. It will never be tolerated by the office of the AGF,” he said. He continued that, “It is not just about having a team that will be prosecuting but ensuring that the relevant audit is taken as it relates to previous prosecutions to ensure that those that are found wanting are brought to book, and then the future of prosecution in this country is further enhanced by having in place an effective legal team that will involve legal drafters for efficient drafting of charges. “In addition, there will be efficient investigators that will ensure that adequate proof of evidence that will establish the required ingredients of an offence are put in place, and competent prosecutors that will ensure that the required evidence is presented before the relevant courts for the purpose of establishing guilt . Politics › How Buhari Ensured Democratic Transition In Burkina Faso — Osinbajo by emamos(op): 9:29pm On Dec 29, 2015 |
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said President Muhammadu Buhari was a key player in the civil transition in Burkina Faso which culminated Tuesday with the inauguration of a democratically elected president in the west African nation. Mr. Osinbajo made the observation while speaking with reporters after the inauguration of Rock Marc Christian Kabore as the democratic President of Burkina Faso at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Ouaga 2000 Stadium, Ouagadougou. The event was witnessed by several presidents from West Africa and former leaders like Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo and Ghana’s Jerry Rawlings. The vice president said Mr. Buhari was very categorical in criticizing the coup d’etats which took place in the country before the election and said the position was important in ensuring enduring civil rule in the continent. “President Muhammadu Buhari of cause was at the table and was probably one of the key persons who brought about this. “As a matter of fact the Burkinabes agreed that he played such a significant role in enabling this to happen. “Even from the time of their elections we aided the electoral committee logistically and in various other ways and the President was firm about the issue of the Coup. “He was very firm and of cause you know that he was possibly one of the active negotiators in ensuring that the coup did not stand. “So our relationships will be much stronger. I think the Burkinabe people 2understand the role that we have played and are very appreciative,” he said. The vice president, who represented Mr. Buhari at the inauguration, described it as a great occasion noting that the ECOWAS sub region had come of age in democracy. “I think it is a very great occasion. It is a wonderful day indeed for West Africa and indeed for Africa because after 30 years of military rule in one form or the other we now have a transition to an authentic civil democracy which is incredible indeed. “And the fact that all these happened with the active collaboration of ECOWAS states without any outside interference is a great thing indeed. “I think that in many senses ECOWAS has come of age. It shows that ECOWAS is able to resolve its disputes and to advance its own causes. “This is excellent indeed. It is a very wonderful day and I congratulate the President on this great occasion and of cause the people of Burkina Faso who stood their ground and insisted on democracy.’’ Mr. Osinbajo said that the people of Burkina Faso had proved to be genuinely interested in good governance. “They have been courageous. They have fought to see this day and they deserve all the congratulations and all the commendation. “I think the people did an excellent outing, they stood their ground. “But for that we probably wouldn’t be here today,’’ he added .
