iliyande: Member, House of Representatives, Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency of Kaduna State, under Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Yakubu Barde, has advocated for the amputation of the hands of those who have looted public funds in the country.
He said those who stole millions of naira should have their hands amputated, while those who have looted in the billions of naira should be hanged to death.
Speaking yesterday at a press conference with Kaduna State chapter of correspondents chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Barde said some members of the lower chamber who are of like mind are already looking at the possibility of putting such a law in place to make it legal.
To this end, the lawmaker called for a special court rather than the conventional court to try and sentence looters of public monies to the prescribed capital punishment.
He said “I am a believer in the fact that people should be punished for whatever offence they commit. And I am also of the belief that punishment should also be segregated according to the offence. At least your punishment should be commensurate with what you have done.
“For me, if someone steals from N1 million to N100 million, they should cut his hands. There is nothing wrong with that, so that when we see him, we will know yes, he stole. And those that steal billions upward should be hanged and their property confiscated.
“You can imagine this issue of arms deal. If you knew this money was meant for the procurement of arms, weapons, (consider) if you have a brother in the Army, he is sent to the war front and because his weapons are archaic and he is killed. Do you now want to have sympathy for someone who knows that the money was meant for arms and he pocketed it? It is so painful, we have lost loved ones.
“If I am a judge and such a person is brought before me, I will confisticate his property and make sure he is killed also. Because he bears fault in the blood of the people killed in the war front.
“We are living in a very funny country where people steal N1,000 and they are put in jail for years. And where some people will steal billions and use that same billion to escape justice. That is not good enough.
“If you look at the quantum of corruption in the country today, we are just talking about Dasukigate, and look at the quantum of money and the number of people that are involved. You have not gone to the ministries yet. You have not even gone to the states and it is only ICPC and EFCC that are to do all these jobs.
“If we are fair to ourselves, the work is overwhelming. And you know, people will want to use the legal system to delay Justice, and that is what is happening today. So, why don’t we have dedicated courts to handle all these corruption cases, so that justice could be dispensed quickly?
“I am aware of former Governors who have cases with the EFCC and they have not gone to court for the past eight years. So, this does not encourage the young people. It rather encourages them to steal.
“So, I think we need to put our heads together because corruption, like hunger, does not know party, it does not know tribe of religion. We must as Nigerians take a very bold stand.”

Politics › How My Father Was Killed – Ladoke Akintola’s Son by emamos(op): 5:51pm On Jan 15, 2016 |
The scion of the family of a late Premier of the defunct Western Region, Ambassador Abayomi Akintola, has given graphic details of the almost twenty-hour siege that culminated in the brutal assassination of his father, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, during the January 15, 1966 coup. He insisted that the body of his father was not mutilated by the mutineers as widely believed, but confirmed that the invaders abandoned his blood-soaked body at the entrance of the building. The former Nigeria Ambassador to Hungary recounted the 1966 harrowing experience during a lecture marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Akintola, held at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, on Thursday. The event was attended by the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi; his immediate past predecessor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala; Secretary to the Osun State Government, Alhaji Mashood Adeoti; a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Richard Akinjide; Senator Brimmo Yusuf, among others. Also on Friday, the governor led others to lay wreaths in honour of the country’s war heroes during the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the Remembrance Arcade, opposite the Government House, Ibadan. Ajimobi said, “It is pertinent to remember gallant solders that have put down their lives to sustain the unity of our dear country. We will continue to support them even when they are no more.” The General Officer Commanding, 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Laz Ilo, described the programme as a good way of giving honour to the fallen soldiers, whom, he said, did their best and paid the supreme price for the unity, sovereignty and survival of the country. At the LAUTECH lecture, Akintola said that none of the premier’s children and their wives was injured while the gun attack lasted, describing their father as a hero who laid down his life and shielded his family from the invaders. He said, “I was managing a thriving business in Lagos when my later father directed me to relocate to Ibadan when he became premier. Although I was very reluctant to leave certainty for uncertainty, I had to defer to him. That was how I came to Ibadan. “During the coup, about 50 soldiers invaded our house. My father was in a room within the house with us and we begged him not to go out. We shielded ourselves with the big wardrobes in the room as the soldiers began to shoot sporadically. “At a stage my father told us he wanted to go and meet them, but we begged him not to go. Like the hero that he was, he told us that he would prefer to go and face them and damn the consequence, rather than to allow them to wipe out his family if they continue to hide.” Akintola said his father eventually confronted the soldiers, who alleged initially ran away, frightened that any living thing in the house could survive under the hail of bullets aimed at every direction in the building. According to him, it was not until 7am the following day when the family could venture out of the building only to discover the body of the family’s patriarch in a pool of his blood. He described the late premier as a nationalist, a quintessential family man, a democracy lover, an orator and committed politician who did his best to raise the socio-economic profile of the Western region. In his address at the event, Ajimobi admonished the family of the late premier to reach out and involve more people and political leaders on issues and events relating to the late premier, whom he described as an “unsung hero.” The governor noted that the political evolution of the contemporary Nigeria began with the political activities and contributions of the likes of Akintola. Ajimobi said, “Akintola died at God’s appointed time. It’s our fault that Akintola was not being celebrated the way we should. I want to first blame the family for monopolizing him; then the rest of us. That is why I would want us to start strategizing on how to compensate this nationalist. “The contemporary political history and evolution of Nigeria begins with the outstanding contributions of many notable nationalists, politicians and statesmen, who were beacons of light in their generation. In the forefront, no doubt, was the Late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola lalasticlala read more: http://dailypost.ng/2016/01/15/how-my-father-was-killed-ladoke-akintolas-son/ |

The fate of over 2000 workers at federal government oil and gas agencies currently hangs in the balance as there are indications that the government may have concluded plans to release a number of them from active service, this month. Staff to be affected are expected to come from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) among others. In order to achieve this, some staff of the agencies serving at various stations across the country were redeployed to the head offices in Abuja and Lagos in the case of DPR. Sources at the some of these agencies have hinted hat the deployment exercise was actually a deliberate plan aimed at restructuring them for optimal performance. The exercise comes as part of efforts by the new management of the agencies and the new administration of President Muhammad Buhari to clean the rot in the oil and gas industry of corruption . On the recommendation of the committee established to audit the procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces and Defence sector from 2007 to 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to carry out further investigation into the misconduct established against the following retired and serving officers of the Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Army: (1)Air Chief Marshal AS Badeh (Rtd) (2)Air Marshal MD Umar (Rtd) (3)Air Marshal AN Amosu (Rtd) (4) Maj-Gen. ER Chioba (Rtd) (5)AVM IA Balogun (Rtd) (6)AVM AG Tsakr (Rtd) (7)AVM AG Idowu (Rtd) ( AVM AM Mamu (9)AVM OT Oguntoyinbo (10)AVM T Omenyi (11)AVM JB Adigun (12)AVM RA Ojuawo (13)AVM JA Kayode-Beckley (12)Air Cdre SA Yushau (Rtd) (13)Air Cdre AO Ogunjobi (14)Air Cdre GMD Gwani (15)Air Cdre SO Makinde (16)Air Cdre AY Lassa (16)Col N Ashinze (17)Lt Col. MS Dasuki (Rtd) Following the submission of the audit committee’s second interim report, President Buhari has directed the EFCC to investigate the roles of the officers and the following companies and their directors in fundamental breaches associated with the procurements by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). (1)Messrs Societe D’ Equipments Internationaux (2) Himma Aboubakar (3)Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (4)Messrs Syrius Technologies (5) Dr Theresa A. Ittu (6)Sky Experts Nig Ltd (7)Omenyi Ifeanyi Tony ( Huzee Nig Ltd (9)GAT Techno Dynamics Ltd (10) Gbujie Peter Obie (11) Onuri Samuel Ugochukwu (12)Spacewebs Interservices Ltd (13)Oguntoyinbo Tayo (14) Oguntoyinbo Funmi. (15) Delfina Oil and Gas Ltd (16)Chief Jacobs Bola (17)Mono Marine Corporation Nig Ltd (18)Geonel Intergrated Services Ltd (20)Sachi Felicia (20) Mudaki Polycarp (21)Wolfgang Reinl. The breaches identified by the Audit Committee include non-specification of procurement costs, absence of contract agreements, award of contracts beyond authorised thresholds, transfer of public funds for unidentified purposes and general non-adherence to provisions of the Public Procurement Act. Furthermore, the procurement processes were arbitrarily carried out and generally characterized by irregularities and fraud. In many cases, the procured items failed to meet the purposes they were procured for, especially the counter insurgency efforts in the North East. A major procurement activity undertaken by ONSA for NAF was that concerning the contracts awarded to Societe D’ Equipment Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd. Between January 2014 and February 2015, NAF awarded 10 contracts totalling Nine Hundred and Thirty Million, Five Hundred Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety US Dollars ($930,500,690.00) to SEI Nig Ltd. Letters of award and End User Certificates for all the contracts issued by NAF and ONSA respectively did not reflect the contract sums. Rather, these were only found in the vendor’s invoices, all dated 19 March 2015. Additionally, some of the award letters contained misleading delivery dates suggesting fraudulent intent in the award process. The observed discrepancies are in clear contravention of extant procurement regulations. The SEI contracts included procurement of two used Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi-35M series at the cost of One Hundred and Thirty Six Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Four Thousand US Dollars ($136,944,000.00). However, it was confirmed that the helicopters were excessively priced and not operationally air worthy at the time of delivery. A brand new unit of such helicopters goes for about Thirty Million US Dollars ($30m). Furthermore, the helicopters were delivered without rotor blades and upgrade accessories. Additionally, the helicopters were undergoing upgrade while being deployed for operation in the North East without proper documentation. It was further established that as at date, only one of the helicopters is in service while the other crashed and claimed the lives of two NAF personnel. The Committee established that ONSA also funded the procurement of 4 used Alpha-Jets for the NAF at the cost of Seven Million, One Hundred and Eighty Thousand US Dollars ($7,180,000.00). However, it was confirmed that only 2 of the Alpha-Jet aircraft were ferried to Nigeria after cannibalization of engines from NAF fleet. This is contrary to the written assertion of the former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal AN Amosu to the former NSA that all the 4 procured Alpha-Jets aircraft were delivered to the NAF. The non-militarisation of the Alpha-Jets made them unsuitable for deployment to the North East and they are currently deployed only for training at NAF Kainji. Furthermore, the procurement of the Alpha-Jets was contrary to the recommendation of the assessment team. The Committee found that the conduct of Air Marshal Amosu was deliberately misleading and unpatriotic lalasticlala, obinoscopy http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/buhari-orders-probe-of-17-top-military-officers-and-21-companies/. |

Crime › ‘how LASTMA Officials Caused My Friend’s Death’ by emamos(op): 7:56am On Jan 15, 2016 |
A coroner’s inquest into the death of one Ikechukwu Abasirim was, yesterday, told how the deceased was crushed by a vehicle being pursued by the Lagos State Transport Management Authority, LASTMA, officials on Apapa-Osodi expressway. File Photo The coroner’s court, presided over by Magistrate M. K.O. Fadeyi of an Ogba Magistrates’ Court, was informed that the deceased who accompanied his friend, one Demian Eke to repair his faulty vehicle by the road side, was crushed by a fleeing commercial bus driver pursued by LASTMA officials. Leading proceedings before the court, a lawyer to the deceased, Kennedy Osunwa, explained that on October 27, 2014, Abasirim, a conductor, was working with his friend, along Cele-Mile 2 Expressroad when their vehicle developed a fault, prompting the driver to park at Rainbow Bus Stop. According to the lawyer, “a combined team of police and LASTMA officials was pursuing a commercial bus from Mile 2 to Rainbow. “At that point, the deceased alighted from his vehicle and the commercial bus being pursued by the officials crushed him dead. “His friend, Demian, rushed him to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.” Demian Eke also testified before the court. The coroner had issued witness summons to LASTMA’s head office and State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State, to give evidence on what led to the killing of late Abasirim. The court decided to adjourn further hearing in the case till January 28. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/how-lastma-officials-caused-my-friends-death/ lalasticlala, obinoscopy |

Nairaland General › Nigeria: Fear Of Lassa Fever Increases Cost Of Rat Traps In Ilorin by emamos(op): 7:35am On Jan 15, 2016 |
JUST as the Ebola scare, which gripped the nation two years ago made sanitizers and bitter cola scarce commodities, the fear of deadly Lassa fever, which has claimed over 40 lives since its outbreak last week, has suddenly jacked up the cost of rat traps by over 50 per cent in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital. Sellers of the product, once perceived as the less- privileged in society, are now the toast of many, especially the privileged class. The patronage for their products and services in exterminating rodents from households has skyrocketed in the last few days. This development is not unconnected with the outbreak of the Lassa fever virus in some parts of the country, which medical experts have said is caused by rats. According to Anthony Obi, who hawks the rat killer products, 2016 has started on a very good note. "We thank God for good market on the rat killer gum. We are even short of it now. Gone are the days when they would price it for as low as N100. Today, we don't sell it for less than N500. In fact, the product is very scarce to come by now." "Some buyers from the GRA are demanding for more of rat gum everyday. We heard there is one disease caused by rats that is killing people now. Rich people are afraid of death. But my brother I am happy because the business is good for us." Meanwhile, the Kwara State government has put in place measures to prevent and bring under control the outbreak of the deadly disease, which has been reported in parts of Oyo and Niger states, that share boundary with it. Kwara, now with about two million population, shares boundary with Oyo at Asa Local Council, just as it shares boundary with Niger by Moro, Edu, Kiama and Patigi council areas. Already, all government's owned hospitals from primary to secondary levels have been put on red alert to report directly to the state's Ministry of Health "any slightest case" presenting itself as Lassa Fever. According to the state's Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Mahmoud Ajeigbe, yesterday in a chat with The Guardian, the state government had at the breakout of the contagious viral disease in some parts of the country, put in place a committee on it. In the same vein, the Chief Medical Director of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Prof. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, said the hospital, reacting to Federal Government's directive, had put in place an Isolation Centre for the management of patients diagnosed with the disease. Ajeigbe, who said no reported case of the outbreak had been discovered yet in Kwara, disclosed that the state government was covertly working on modalities to prevent recording any casualty in the state. He urged the people of the state to maintain a high hygiene etiquette and not panic about the development lalasticlala, obinoscopy http://allafrica.com/stories/201601150084.html. |

Politics › Ohaneze To Buhari: Release Nnamdi Kanu To Us We Will Make Him Realise The Futili by emamos(op): 3:49pm On Jan 14, 2016 |
THE OHANEZE Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to release the detained director of Radio Biafra and leader of Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu to Igbo leaders, assuring that they would make him realize the futility of continuing his pro- Biafra stance. Chairman of state presidents of Ohaneze in the seven Igbo -speaking states, Dr. Chris Eluemunoh told reporters in Awka that Igbo leaders were equally concerned with the security challenges posed by the activities of the pro-Biafra group, adding that once Kanu was released to Igbo leaders, they would sit him down and discuss with him and make him realize the negative effects of continuing with efforts to actualize the Biafra Republic. According to Eluemunoh, a lot of discussions on how to tackle the issue of insecurity in the country were going on among Igbo leaders, adding that they believe that Kanu’s issue could be better handled and resolved if he was released to enable Igbo leaders get involved in the matter. He said: “IPOB and MASSOB (the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra) can operate as pressure groups and not as secessionist groups. Many Igbo people are residing in other parts of Nigeria and there is no way they can abandon their investments to return to the East in the name of Biafra.” He however commended IPOB for ending their protests that grounded many cities in the East last year, assuring them that they would benefit more if they adopted dialogue in their approach to national issues. The Ohaneze leader also spoke on the recent statement credited to the Enugu -based Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka in which he was quoted as saying that some people were planning to assassinate President Buhari, describing such a statement as reckless. He added: “Mbaka should face his evangelism work as a priest rather than creating panic in the country. If he received any revelation, the better thing for him to do is to keep it to himself and pray to God to avert such a thing. The president is the Commander -in -Chief of the country’s armed forces and is capable of securing himself and we see the statement by Mbaka as a distraction.” He said that Ohaneze supports the president’s anti corruption war, adding that by the way he is going, sanity would soon return to the country’s socio -economic life lalasticlala http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/ohaneze-to-buhari-release-nnamdi-kanu-to-us-we-will-make-him-realise-the-futility-in-his-pro-biafra-stance/. |
