2018 UTME: JAMB SPEAKS ON CUT OFF MARK

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said the cut-off mark for the 2018 UTME would likely be 180 or 190.

The board’s spokesman, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen on Sunday.

He said, ” The cut-off mark for the 2018 UTME would likely be 180 or 190.”

Recall that the board had urged its 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates to patiently await the results of the just concluded examinations. This followed concerns over delay in the release of candidates’ results.

JAMB Directs 2018 UTME Candidates To Check Results Online - 09082964145

Bwari (FCT) – The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed candidates who have taken the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) to visit the board’s website for their results.

The Head of Media of the Board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, gave the directive at a news conference on Tuesday in Bwari, Abuja.

Benjamin said that the results had been scrutinised and released on its website, http://www.jamb.org.ng, adding that such candidates were free to visit the Board’s website for their results. He also explained that the results would be released in batches to enable candidates who have already taken the examination to check them. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, recently said that unlike the 2017 exercise, the Board would not release the results of the 2018 examinations immediately until after two or three days. This, he stated, was not because the Board was incapable of releasing them immediately but that results must undergo review and total scrutiny to avoid multiple cancellation of candidates’ results. The 2018 UTME began on Friday and is scheduled to finish on Saturday.

JAMB SAYS UTME 2018 RESULTS ARE READY

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) has said that the results for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are ready.

The board spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, made this disclosure while featuring on RockCity 101.9FM’s program, Day Break Show, yesterday in Abeokuta.

Benjamin, however, stated that they will be delayed, as there was need to preview them before they would be eventually released.

“Once a candidate clicks submit, the result is ready but we wait to preview the results before releasing so we don’t cancel results later. You can detect malpractice even after exams,” he said.

Benjamin also hinted that there are plans for the examination to be written from candidates’ homes in future.

“We are thinking of open book examinations or allowing them write the examination from their houses. Once we get the required technology, we can do it,” he declared.

Education / UTME 2018: PROTECT YOUR PROPERTIES, JAMB CAUTIONS CANDIDATES by EmceeExquisite1(m): 7:05am On Mar 12, 2018
UTME 2018: PROTECT YOUR PROPERTIES, JAMB CAUTIONS CANDIDATES

A Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) official, on Saturday, cautioned candidates sitting for the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to be careful with their properties. Mr Bukky Ojuade, a JAMB official at the New Ocean Comprehensive High School, Ayobo, Lagos, who gave the warning, said that a candidate (name withheld) lost his phone on Saturday. He told newsmen the candidate who sat for the first session of the examination complained that he could not recognise the person he gave his phone to before the screening began.

“The candidate gave his phone to someone at the gate because he thought the man was a staff of the school. “After the examination he couldn’t find the man and couldn’t even recognise him,” Ojuade said. He advised candidates to keep their properties, especially mobile phones at home or where it can be properly monitored by the JAMB officials.

“My best advice is that they should keep their properties at home or where it can be monitored by the officials, otherwise they will be accountable to whatever happens” He also advised candidates to arrive early to their examination centres as no opportunity would be given to candidates who miss their scheduled time. “Any candidate who is serious should leave home as early as possible, because once they miss the exam, they have to wait till next year to get another form,” he said.

Newsmen report that a total of 10 candidates missed their opportunity of taking part in the examination at the centre. Ojuade also said that the examination was hitch-free; adding that JAMB had improved in its operations as far as writing the examinations was concerned. Mrs Oyelola Balogun, the technical officer at the centre, said there were no technical or network issues during the course of the examination. “We had three sessions and everything went fine. We didn’t even experience any network or technical issues, we thank God for that,” she said. Adeoye Olabisi, a candidate, who wrote for the first time at the centre, also commended the efforts of JAMB on the smooth running of the examination. “I really commend the efforts of JAMB for the smooth running of the examination.

They made sure we followed the instructions and I was able to finish early,” she said. The ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) going smoothly in nearly all the examination centres in some states monitored by NAN. The Bauchi state coordinator of JAMB, Mr Usman Zage told NAN that the ongoing UTME has been hitch free in nearly all the exam centres in the state since its commencement on Friday. Zage said that there are enough computer facilities for the candidates because the exam is computer based. Speaking on the challenges so far, Zage said the major challenge is power supply which has been resolved.

“The challenge so far is usually about power supply, because PHCN can interrupt the power supply anytime. So, we rely solely on generator and other alternative power sources like the UPS, inverter and Solar power, in case the generator develops fault or fails,” he said Zage also said enough security agents were in all the centres across the state, ranging from the Police, Civil Defence and DSS. Corroborating the coordinator’s submission, one of the candidates Ifeoluwa Asogba said there is maximum security in her centre.

“Before we went in to the exam hall, we had to go through mass security screening where our phones, pens, wrist watch and other things not meant for the examination were collected by them. “Getting to the hall, computers were available and everything was on and ready without any network problems,” she said. Another candidate, Kamal Sani, said the exam went well and that he encountered no network problem at all. NAN

Education / UTME 2018: JAMB CANDIDATES CALL FOR TRANSPARENCY IN ADMISSION PROCESS by EmceeExquisite1(m): 5:23am On Mar 09, 2018
UTME 2018: JAMB CANDIDATES CALL FOR TRANSPARENCY IN ADMISSION PROCESS

Candidates for the 2018 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) have ahead of the tomorrow’s exams called for transparency in admission process.

The Computer-Based Test (CBT) examination is scheduled to hold between Friday, March 9 and Monday, March 19 nationwide.

Some candidates, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at a Computer Based Test (CBT) centre on Thursday said they were optimistic that the 2018 exercise would end in their favour.

One of the candidates, identified as Lucy Ibrahim said that she was writing the examinations for the second time, adding that her level of optimism remained unshaken.

According to her, it is not the scores that concerns her but the struggle for admission into her university of choice.

“I scored 231 last year, but I believe that I will score higher this time.

“But my prayer is for my school of choice to admit me this year.

“I am from Kaduna and I applied for Mass Communication in ABU.

“I just hope that the process is transparent and fair, so that a good percentage of us can get the admission this year,’’ Ibrahim said.

Similarly, Chibuke Okafor, another candidate told NAN that his level of preparedness was high enough to give him the score he needed to make his admission dream come true.

He, however, alleged that the entire admission process was discouraging and fraught with corruption.

According to him, the level of corruption in some schools would not allow fairness in the entire admission process.

Also, another candidate, Okafor said that with the new cut-off mark of 120, some schools would still frustrate the system by making it difficult for many eligible candidates.

similarly, Patrick Adamu, prayed for the exercise to be hitch-free, especially from network disruption.

He also wished that the exercise begin on schedule

Meanwhile, a student, Mercy Obi, who commended JAMB for introducing innovations to enhance the system, urged various schools to emulate the board’s desire to make things easier for candidates.

She said: “Most times, you find out that the challenges that come up are not from JAMB but from schools.

“This is because when JAMB gives admission to a candidate, the school may likely not admit such candidate, even if you meet up all requirements.

“Some of us, who have no one to fight for us or money to spend to gain admission, will continue to write until luck finally shines on us’’.

YABATECH APPOINTS NEW RECTOR

The academic environment welcomes the new rector in persons of Engr. Femi Omokugbe

The source disclosed that the Council chairman, two members of academic board, two other council members and Rectors of Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti and Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, interviewed the 22 applicants and scored them according to set criteria.

According to the source, the Council chairman followed the laid down rules, as the out-going Rector, Dr. Magaret Ladipo, did not score the applicants, but only observed throughout the exercise, unlike previous exercises where the incumbent Rector participate score the candidates during interview process.

Aside the joint council/academic board selection committee, representatives of the Minister of Education, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Federal Character Commission also observed the exercise to ensure due process were adhered to in appointment of a new rector.

Investigations revealed that the 22 applicants, including the three professors shortlisted made presentations of their vision for the college and after which questions were asked by the 7-man selection committee.

Aledare, a chief lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, from Kogi State obtained 76.5 per cent while Mr. Raheem, current Ddeputy Rector fromn the Department of Mass Communication, from Oyo state, came third with 59.8 per cent.

It was gathered that the letter which contained the names of the three chief lecturers would be routed through the minister of education for an onward transmission to the Presidency to pick one of the three recommended candidates.

The selection exercise was overshadowed by the protest by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) over the inclusion of three professors in the interview. The union said the action of the council is against the spirit of the Federal Polytechnic Act, advert published for the position and the agreement reached with the Federal Government that only chief lecturers in the polytechnic system can apply for rector job.

Education / JAMB:WHAT CANDIDATES PARENTS OR GUARDIANS MUST NOT DO DURING 2018 UTME – REGISTR by EmceeExquisite1(m): 5:39am On Mar 02, 2018
JAMB: WHAT CANDIDATES PARENTS OR GUARDIANS MUST NOT DO DURING 2018 UTME – REGISTRAR

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has warned parents of candidates sitting for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination to stay away from Computer-Based Centres.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, gave the warning on Monday in Abuja while monitoring the Mock UTME at the Kogo and Veritas University CBT centres.

He noted that some parents had formed the habit of hanging around the centres to engage in examination malpractice, and also warned the candidates against flouting the Board’s rules.

According to him, “We urge parents to keep away from CBT centres. We are preparing people for university education, but the parents come around too often. They want their children or their wards to pass at all costs.

“This practice is not helpful because they will not follow these candidates to the lecture rooms. Lecturers and others will start taking undue advantage of such parents because they are not mature. They are not prepared for the task. I think parents should steer clear of all CBT centres and allow the children to grow .”

He further called on the UTME candidates to desist from cheating during the examination, as the board would monitor all the computers to be used.

He said that all electronic devices, such as phones, headsets, flash drives and other items, such as wristwatches and calculators, remained banned.

He said that the ban on special eyeglasses and pens also applied to supervisors and examiners.

He added, “We urge the candidates to avoid any form of malpractice or shortcut to passing the examination. You are aware that we have banned some items from going into the examination halls; we have banned special glasses, wristwatches and many other things that we are aware our candidates use for illicit activities.

“As the candidates are getting cleverer, the board is getting wiser. We have done everything possible to avoid the issue of logging out. When a student sees that the questions are difficult, he plays some pranks, remove some wires pulls out the cable. Then there is a problem. But we are going to monitor every system and if we discover that a candidate deliberately shut down a system, he will carry his cross.”
