Pope Francis created 17 new cardinals from across the globe Saturday, elevating them in a time-honoured ceremony to an elite body that advises and elects popes. Pope Francis warned them against falling victim to a “growing animosity” between people, including within the Church, in a possible reference to divisions within the hierarchy over Francis’s bid for a more open, forgiving Church. He also urged them to fight growing xenophobia in the world and protect those such as refugees, who are often classed as enemies. Three of them are from the US, while others come from corners of the world where the Catholic Church needs a boost. Dressed in red robes, the “princes of the Church” knelt before the pontiff to pledge their allegiance in a solemn ceremony. Thirteen of them are under 80 and therefore eligible to take part in the next secret conclave to elect or become the head of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics. They are known as cardinal electors. History’s first Latin American pope is famed for wanting to reach out to far-flung dioceses often overlooked by Rome and he has shunned European candidates almost entirely, favouring low-key, pastoral figures or men he knows. The cardinal electors come from Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Central African Republic, Italy, Mauritius, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Spain, the United States and Venezuela. ‘Our greatest wealth’ “How many situations of uncertainty and suffering are sown by this growing animosity between peoples, between us! Yes, between us, within our communities, our priests, our meetings,” he said. “We come from distant lands; we have different traditions, skin colour, languages and social backgrounds; we think differently and we celebrate our faith in a variety of rites. None of this makes us enemies; instead, it is one of our greatest riches,” he said. The pope gave each man a three-cornered red hat, telling them that the colour symbolises “your readiness to act with courage, even to the shedding of your blood” for the Catholic Church. They were also handed a gold ring of their high office. The new cardinals were to head to the Mater Ecclesiae monastery inside the Vatican to visit retired pope Benedict XVI. The unexpected pick of three Americans reverses a trend that saw Francis pass over US candidates in his first two consistories. By choosing archbishops Blase Cupich of Chicago, Joseph Tobin of Indianapolis and Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas, Francis has “engineered what may prove to be a seismic shift in the Catholic hierarchy in the United States,” wrote expert John Allen on the US Catholic website Crux. The three, from the Church’s “progressive wing”, may help counterbalance a strong conservative presence among US cardinals, particularly at a moment when the authority of reform-minded Francis is being challenged by US-led traditionalists. Honorary ‘red hats‘ The youngest of the new cardinals is 49-year old Dieudonne Nzapalainga, the archbishop of Bangui, who organised the pope’s 2015 visit to Central African Republic, where Francis opened the first “Holy Door” outside of Rome. Some come from areas where Catholics are a distinct minority: Patrick D’Rozario of Bangladesh comes from a country where Christians represent just 0.03 percent of the total population, and only fifty percent of those are Catholics. The sole Italian cardinal-elect is Mario Zenari, who is currently the papal envoy to Syria. Among the four “red hats” over 80, who are given the title for service to the Church, is Albanian priest Ernest Simoni, who reduced Francis to tears in 2014 when he recounted the two decades he spent imprisoned for his faith during Albania’s brutal communist rule. Another of the over 80s, Sebastian Khoarai from Lesotho, was not present because of ill health. Francis has now named 44 cardinal electors, just over a third of the total of 120 allowed by Church law. http://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2016/11/19/pope-francis-creates-17-cardinals-roman-catholic-church/

Samsung Electronics has announced the global launch of its P-Series standalone SMART signage, the world’s first Tizen-powered premium displays. Utilizing the versatile strengths of Tizen as an open source platform as well as in performance and usability, the P-Series displays, including the PHF (700nit brightness) and PMF (500nit brightness; except 32-inch display) models, will also be the first to feature the upgraded fourth generation Samsung SMART Signage Platform (SSSP 4.0). “The launch of Samsung’s new P-Series signage represents a landmark moment for our business, as we’ve made our already industry-leading visual displays even more capable with the addition of the Tizen platform to our SSSP,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “By equipping our displays with faster and more versatile content management tools, our customers will be better prepared to solve their most prominent customer engagement challenges.” Advantages as Open Source Platform With SSSP partners typically preferring an open source platform for standard web APIs rather than closed platform, the new P-Series displays, powered by Tizen, feature the advantages of a cross-architecture, open source platform based on a comprehensive standards-based HTML5 implementation. The new displays also will enable easier web app development with an upgraded Tizen Emulator and new Remote Debugging Tool. Powerful and Durable Performance The slim-designed PHF (43-, 49- and 55-inch) and PMF (32-, 43-, 49- and 55-inch) series standalone displays are the first in Samsung’s line-up to showcase content using the SSSP 4.0’s reinforced graphics engine. As result, the P-Series displays enjoy animation performance three times better than that of previous SSSP iterations, including enhanced response times and seamless playback. P-Series users relying on real-time audience engagement gain expanded options to deliver clear content. The displays support smooth transitions between a variety of formats, without black screens or interruptions. The Tizen-powered P-Series displays are designed for uninterrupted, 24/7 operation in any location, reducing maintenance burdens and improving peace of mind for users. Both the PHF and PMF models are IP5X certified, validating their ability to perform at optimal quality when exposed to a range of environmental factors and making them ideal for locations subject to dust and dirt, including subway stations and bus terminals. Simple Usability As an all-in-one signage alternative, Samsung’s P-Series displays condense complex display operations into a single, easy-to-navigate hub that does not require external PCs or devices to function. With the new MagicInfo Server 4.0, users can manage their entire signage portfolio through a central remote server in real time and make adjustments across individual displays or display groups from any location. A complementary toolset, including the Web Simulator and Tizen Emulator programs, further extends content development opportunities by enabling users to build and launch web-based management applications directly within the SSSP 4.0 platform. Samsung’s P-Series displays also contain an integrated centralized infrared receiver (IR) to drive more convenient operation. Although hidden from view, the centralized IR is compatible with remote control devices and drives faster and easier navigation than most standard displays, which place the IR component in harder-to-operate corner locations, allow. Slim-Design for Any Setting A slim-depth (29.9 mm.) and narrow bezel (6.9 mm.) design makes Samsung’s P-Series displays among the thinnest on the market. This compact design expands implementation possibilities, and enables space-constrained businesses to connect with audiences in previously untapped locations. Additionally, the narrow bezel composition ensures viewers remain focused on featured content rather than the display itself. As the Tizen-backed P-Series displays enter the marketplace, several prominent companies already have recognized their ability to foster improved operations and business growth. Signagelive, a global cloud-based digital signage technology platform provider, recently migrated its media player software to SSSP 4.0. The implementation makes Signagelive’s platform fully compatible with Samsung’s SMART Signage line-up, and accelerates customer deployment. http://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2016/10/11/samsung-worlds-first-tizen-powered-displays/

Facebook has launched a workplace version of its mobile app and website on Monday, marking the social networking company’s first foray into the hotly competitive and crowded enterprise software arena. The product, called Workplace by Facebook, has been in testing for more than a year and is now available to all businesses. It is designed for workplace communication and collaboration, putting Facebook in direct competition with the fast-growing startup Slack. Workplace is a subscription product – a departure for advertising-driven Facebook – with businesses paying $1 to $3 per user. Slack’s least expensive business plan charges about $7 per user. Slack did not respond to a request for comment. Workplace is the latest move by Facebook to take on competitors in all areas of social networking and mobile communications. Over the past several months it also has rolled out products to challenge the fast-growing ephemeral photo-sharing app Snapchat. Still, the company will have to overcome the fact that Facebook is not really a work tool and is often viewed as a distraction in offices. To combat that, Workplace does not require people to sign in with their personal accounts and limits News Feed – Facebook’s main feature where users can see regular updates from friends and others that they follow – to company announcements, memos and communications. Facebook is building a direct sales force for Workplace and also working with professional services firms to get businesses signed up. “We want to replace a lot of old technologies like internal emails, mailing lists, newsletters,” said Julien Codorniou, Facebook’s global head of Workplace. “These are things that people want to get rid of.” Facebook’s power in mobile arena – its Messenger app has more than 1 billion users worldwide – could give the company an edge at a moment when businesses are increasingly looking for mobile-friendly communications tools. Although its biggest markets for Workplace include the United States and the United Kingdom, Facebook is aggressively targeting businesses in emerging markets, including Africa and Asia, where some employees primarily rely on mobile phones. It also is going after businesses with non-traditional desk workers – such as baristas, ship workers and factory workers – where employees spend the majority or all of their time outside of offices. Facebook has more than 1,000 businesses signed up, the company said, with India as its biggest market. http://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2016/10/10/facebook-rolls-business-software/

@DoctorAlien I am sick of how people like you display their ignorance online and basically find it hard to comment on issues like this but i am forced to comment. people like you don’t know anything about the catholic church that have existed more than a thousand compared to your church that does not even know how the bible was compiled and possible not up to 80 years. What do you mean by the catholic way of sprinkling water? Check your bible very well; Cornelius was baptised with his household (Acts 10:47-48; 11:14), Lydia was baptised with her household (Acts 16:15), the Philippian jailor was baptised with his household (Acts 16:33-34) and Stephanas was baptised with his household (1 Cor. 1:16). I see no immersion there, maybe you will tell me now that they have bathtub and note that the bible said household in their home not river or stream etc. Remember household those days includes father, mother, children (including adults, teenagers and infants if available) and slaves etc. I am not against immersion but what am saying is that don’t talk about what you don’t know because you feel like talking and misinforming people. Please do not rely your faith and Christianity on hearsay, endeavour to do read the bible, research and know more instead of putting your thoughts in default settings about anything catholic. I am 10000000% Catholic Thank you |

Video calling is the next best thing to being with someone in person, but too often it can be a frustrating or complicated experience. You shouldn’t have to worry about whether your call will connect, or if your friend is using the same type of device as you are. Google has released Google Duo — a simple 1-to-1 video calling app available for Android and iOS. Duo takes the complexity out of video calling, so that you can be together in the moment wherever you are. Google Duo interface is simple from start to finish. To get started, all you need is your phone number and you’ll be able to reach people in your phone’s contacts list. No separate account is required, so you can sign up in just a few steps. From there, you can instantly begin a video call with a single tap. It is fast and reliable. Duo is built to be fast and reliable, so that video calls connect quickly and work well even on slower networks. Call quality adjusts to changing network conditions to keep you connected — when bandwidth is limited, Duo will gracefully reduce the resolution to keep the call going smoothly. For video calls on the go, Duo will switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data automatically without dropping your call. You can start your call at home, and continue seamlessly even when you head out the door. Duo is designed to for users to feel warm and inviting features, focused on just you and the person you’re calling. To make calls feel more like an invitation rather than an interruption, we created a feature in Duo called Knock Knock which lets you see live video of your caller before you answer, giving you a sense of what they’re up to and why they want to chat. Knock Knock makes video calling more spontaneous and welcoming, helping you connect with the person before you even pick up. Finally, Duo with an emphasis on privacy and security, and all Duo calls are end-to-end encrypted. http://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2016/08/22/google-brings-google-duo-simple-1-1-video-calling-app-everyone/

The US is finally ready to relinquish control of the Internet’s domain name system. If all goes according to plan, the US Commerce Department will give up oversight of the DNS and hand it over to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on Oct. 1. Since 1998, the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has partnered with ICANN, a California nonprofit, to keep things running. As NTIA chief Lawrence Strickland said this week, “NTIA’s current stewardship role was intended to be temporary.” Two years ago, the agency started the process of transferring control, which required ICANN to carry out a series of technical tasks. The plan had to have broad community support, and address specific principles, including a promise to maintain the openness of the Internet and the security of the DNS. ICANN met the criteria needed for a transition in June, though NTIA requested a few more things before it would give the final sign-off. That happened last week. “The IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) stewardship transition represents the final step in the US government’s long-standing commitment, supported by three Administrations, to privatize the Internet’s domain name system,” Strickling said last week. “For the last 18 years, the United States has been working to establish a stable and secure multistakeholder model of Internet governance that ensures that the private sector, not governments, take the lead in setting the future direction of the Internet’s domain name system,” he added. The move, however, has become a somewhat partisan issue. In 2014, Republicans drafted the Domain Openness Through Continued Oversight Matters (DOTCOM) Act of 2014, which would have required the Government Accountability Office to study the impact of the US giving up its oversight role of the DNS before it becomes official. The GOP was concerned that the US would hand over control of the DNS to an entity that might manipulate it for political purposes. The DOTCOM Act did not pass, but the Republican party platform approved at this summer’s convention calls the transition “America’s abandonment of the international Internet.” President Obama “threw the Internet to the wolves, and they — Russia, China, Iran, and others — are ready to devour it,” the GOP claims. http://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2016/08/22/us-relinquishes-control-of-internet-naming-system-oct-1/
