The problem Nigerian youth entrepreneurs are facing is lack of funding for their ingenuity business ideas. Many Nigerian youths have awesome business ideas that will change Nigeria and the world, but most of these ideas die in their bedrooms due to lack of seed fund to bring the ideas to reality.

This is where Nigerian billionaires and millionaires need to invest in; angel investment....helping to fund rare and wonderful business ideas of Nigerian youths...we need a platform for that purpose.... A crowdfunding platform to pull resources together to fund viable and ingenuity business ideas of Nigerian youths...Seun you can use Nairaland to start this entrepreneurship revolution in Nigeria.

Jack Ma only brought this idea, a Japanese business man saw future in his idea and pumped in money and today, alibaba group is taking over global trade and may soon overtake Facebook and Google in income generation because they are rendering forever services.
I like all what you wrote but I dey laugh you because I have been in same shoes. A rich told me that my idea has not been tested so he can't invest, or better still take over whatever idea have because he is taking the risk. He also told me that the rich old elites fund the wars and the young ones fight the wars and enjoy the spoils of war. Meaning that I should work for him.
Rich Nigerians don't like you when you have good lucrative and innovative ideas especially when you don't have the means to execute the idea.
The West and Chinese think differently from us.

HealthBreast-feeding Linked To Lower Risk Of Endometrial Cancer by emecheboy2(op): 5:19pm On Jun 21, 2017
An analysis of 17 past studies suggests that while breast-feeding for any period of time appears to lower a woman’s risk of endometrial cancer, mothers who breast-fed for the recommended six months lowered their risk even further.

Surpassing the 6-9 month recommended timeframe for breast-feeding seemed to have little benefit, the researchers said, but those who had ever breast-fed their children were 11 percent less likely than women who had children but didn’t breast-feed to be diagnosed with endometrial cancer, Reuters reported.

“Cancer of the uterus is becoming more common and we need to try to prevent it,” lead author Susan Jordan, of the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane, Australia, told Reuters. “The more women know about the things they can do to reduce their risks of future cancer diagnosis, the better.”

For the report, which was published in Obstetrics and Gynecology, researchers used data compiled in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium, including 10 from the United States and others from Canada, China, Europe and Austrialia, Reuters reported.

Read: Study finds pregnancy seems safe for breast cancer survivors

They looked at more than 26,000 women who had ever had a child, whether they breast-fed, and for how long. Among the women, researchers discovered about 9,000 had been diagnosed with endometrial cancer.

Even after accounting for other risk factors such as age, race, education, oral contraceptive use, menopausal status, years since last pregnancy and body mass index, the suggested protective benefit of breast-feeding remained, Reuters reported.

Authorites have noted that the study doesn’t prove that breast-feeding helps protect against endometrial cancer, but it’s plausible because estrogen, which stimulates the growth of the cancer, is suppressed during breast-feeding.

“Although this piece of evidence by itself may not convince women to breast-feed, it contributes to the overall picture of health gains that can come from breast-feeding,” Jordan told Reuters.

Science/TechnologySnapchat Launches New Map Feature Called Snap Map by emecheboy2(op): 5:07pm On Jun 21, 2017
Snapchat has introduced a new location service: Snap Map, following speculation from last week.

The new feature, which aims to hook you up with nearby users, essentially lets you follow where your friends are hanging out and what they’re up to.

In a way, Snap Maps is supposed to help you keep up with all the events and activities that are taking place in your your vicinity.
Read: Snapchat introduces New World Lenses

The best thing about the new feature is that it is up to you to choose whether you want to share your location with friends – or keep it to yourself. Snap has added a dedicated ‘Ghost Mode’ specifically for this purpose.

Should you choose to share your location, your friends will see your custom Actionmoji appear on the new Map.

Snap Map is already rolling out to iOS and Android users – so you should be able see it on your phone if you update to the latest version of Snapchat.

SportsFIFA Confederations Cup 2017: Three Reasons Why Russia Can Beat Portugal by emecheboy2(op): 2:05pm On Jun 21, 2017
Euro 2016 champions Portugal are viewed as the favourites going into Wednesday’s game against the Russia, especially following Cristiano Ronaldo’s superb performance against Mexico on Sunday. However, there are a few reasons why Russia can cause an upset against Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal at the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017.

Russia’s supremacy in the air

Before the tournament, head coach Stanislav Cherchesov identified set pieces as one of the Sbornaya’s biggest threats. Russia scored from a dead-ball situation in three consecutive warm-up matches ahead of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 – against Belgium, Hungary and Chile – and centre-back Viktor Vasin is proving especially dangerous in the air, with two goals in his last four appearances.

Vasin came inches away from improving his goalscoring record in the seventh minute of the Opening Match against New Zealand on Saturday, when he nodded Aleksandr Samedov’s corner onto the post. As for Portugal, Fernando Santos’ players actually conceded from a corner late on against Mexico, Hector Moreno leaping highest in the box to salvage a draw.

Smolov is on fire

Striker Fyodor Smolov wholly repaid the faith shown in him against the All Whites, coming away with the award for Man of the Match. He started and finished off the move that made it 2-0 in the second half and also completed more successful dribbles (nine) than anyone else in the first round of fixtures.

This follows back-to-back seasons in which Smolov has finished top of the goalscoring charts in the Russian Premier League. Over the past two years, he has scored 55 goals in all competitions, including six for the national team. Nevertheless, he is modest when it comes to his achievements.

“I don’t consider myself a hero at all and we haven’t achieved anything just yet,” he told FIFA.com. “We’ve beaten New Zealand; now let’s get ready for a tough encounter with Portugal.”

Phenomenal support at the Spartak Stadium

More than 50,000 fans cheered Russia on during the Opening Match in Saint Petersburg and, while the capacity at the Spartak Stadium is a little lower, the support is expected to be even more passionate.

The excitement around the Portugal game has been simmering in Russia for a long time and a sell-out was announced well before the start of the tournament.

The Spartak Stadium is sure to be bouncing on Wednesday, especially after the positive start against New Zealand.

Spartak Moscow won the Russian title here for the first time in 16 years just a few months ago. this is a big plus for the home side. The local crowd is therefore used to the winning feeling.

The Red-Whites have the largest contingent of players in the national team (five) and the likes of Denis Glushakov and Aleksandr Samedov are no strangers to scoring great goals on their home turf.

CelebritiesKim Kardashian Celebrates Reaching 100 Million Followers On Instagram by emecheboy2(op): 6:40pm On May 19, 2017
The 36-year-old reality star celebrated reaching 100 million followers on Instagram with a special photo collage featuring Kanye West and their adorable kids, North and Saint.

“Can’t believe I reached 100 million Instagram followers, all thanks to YOU!, Get the stories behind my top pics,” she tweeted and later deleted Thursday, along with a link to her favorite Instagram posts.

Hitting the 100 million mark certainly makes Kim the most followed reality star on Instagram, but she’s not the only celebrity with a major online audience.

Selena Gomez is the most followed user on Instagram with a whopping 120 million followers, Ariana Grande has an impressive 105 million followers, while Beyonce and Taylor Swift round out the celebrity roster with 102 million followers each.

Despite her huge fan following, Kim did recently keep a low profile on social media. After her traumatic Paris robbery last year, the mother of two took a well-publicized break from the spotlight, which included going silent on Twitter, Instagram, etc.

By late October, Kim resumed filming on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and made her official return to Instagram a few months later.

“It was time for Kim to get back on social media and back to work,” a source revealed to ET in January. “That is a huge part of her career. She has obligations to support her family and has an entire team working for her. It was time to get back to normal.”

Foreign AffairsSwedish Prosecutor Drops Rape Probe Against Wikileaks’s Assange by emecheboy2(op): 6:33pm On May 19, 2017
Swedish prosecutors Friday dropped a seven-year rape investigation into Julian Assange, a legal victory for the WikiLeaks founder who has been holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012.

“Director of Public Prosecution, Marianne Ny, has today decided to discontinue the investigation regarding suspected rape by Julian Assange,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The 45-year-old Australian denies the 2010 allegations which he fears will see him extradited to the United States and tried over the leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret US military and diplomatic documents.

Assange was questioned in November in the presence of a Swedish prosecutor. He has repeatedly reiterated his innocence and said the sex was consensual.

Ny and Chief Prosecutor Ingrid Isgren are set to hold a press conference on the decision at 12:00 (1000 GMT) on Friday.

The investigation has suffered from endless procedural complications since it began in 2010.

The statute of limitations on the rape allegation was due to expire in August 2020.

The World Health Organization says Congo now faces 29 suspected cases of the deadly Ebola virus.
WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier on Friday said the number includes two laboratory-confirmed deaths.

Officials announced the outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever a week ago in a remote area of northern Congo.

Lindmeier says Congo authorities and its health partners are monitoring another 416 people who could have come into contact with the suspected cases.

The Ebola outbreak is the eighth in Congo since 1976.

Foreign AffairsMalware Created By Intelligence Services Can Backfire On Its Creators Says Putin by emecheboy2(op): 7:53pm On May 15, 2017
The ransomware that hit computers across the world could backfire on its creators, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in Beijing, adding that the implications of the global hack attack need to be discussed on a political level.

The ransomware was apparently developed in the US, Putin said. “Microsoft’s management has made it clear that the virus originated from US intelligence services,” the Russian president stressed.

Putin added that launching cyber-viruses is “lifting a lid” that “could backfire on those who developed and created them,” including intelligence agencies.

The ransomware attack that affected thousands of computers all across the globe should encourage the international community to tackle cybersecurity on “the highest political level,” he added.

Last year, Moscow proposed discussing cybersecurity threats with Washington with the aim of drafting a bilateral agreement, but to no effect. “Unfortunately, they refused our proposal,” Putin said.

“The previous administration told us they were interested in reaching back to this proposal again, but nothing was actually done,” he explained.

Though the attack did not significantly affect Russia’s cyber infrastructure or the systems used by its banks and healthcare facilities, it is an issue of concern, Putin noted.

The outbreak of the virus, dubbed WannaCry, began last Friday. According to some cybersecurity experts, it is based on an NSA-developed tool that was leaked to the public by a group called Shadow Brokers. The virus, which is ravaging computer networks worldwide, encrypts user files and demands a ransom in cryptocurrency Bitcoin to release them.

Microsoft, which has criticized the American spy agency for its alleged role in creating the situation, released a patch for its no longer supported Windows XP operating system to prevent computers still running it from being infected.

The tech company patched a vulnerability in its newer supported software last month after the leak was made public, but operating systems that were not updated are still vulnerable.

Science/Technology5 Ways To Become A Smaller Target For Ransomware Hackers by emecheboy2(op): 7:15pm On May 15, 2017
This weekend’s global online extortion attack reinforces the need for businesses and other large organizations to update their computer operating systems and security software, cybersecurity experts said.

The attack largely infected networks that used out-of-date software, such as Windows XP, which Microsoft no longer offers technical support for.

“There’s some truth to the idea that people are always going to hack themselves,” said Dan Wire, a spokesman for security firm FireEye. “You’ve got to keep your systems updated.”

The attack that authorities say swept 150 countries this weekend is part of a growing problem of ransomware scams, in which people find themselves locked out of their files and presented with a demand to pay hackers to restore their access.

Hackers bait users to click on infected email links, open infected attachments or take advantage of outdated and vulnerable systems. This weekend’s virus was particularly virulent, because it could spread to all other computers on a network even if just one user clicked a bad link or attachment.

Lawrence Abrams, a New York-based blogger who runs BleepingComputer.com, says many organizations don’t install security upgrades because they’re worried about triggering bugs, or they can’t afford the downtime.

Here are five tips to make yourself a less-likely victim:

MAKE SAFE AND SECURE BACKUPS

Once your files are encrypted, your options are limited. Recovery from backups is one of them. “Unfortunately, most people don’t have them,” Abrams says. Backups often are also out of date and missing critical information. With this attack, Abrams recommends trying to recover the “shadow volume” copies some versions of Windows have.

Some ransomware does also sometimes targets backup files, though.

You should make multiple backups — to cloud services and using physical disk drives, at regular and frequent intervals. It’s a good idea to back up files to a drive that remains entirely disconnected from your network.

BusinessFive Measures Of Growth That Are Better Than GDP by emecheboy2(op): 7:52pm On Apr 30, 2017
GDP is like a speedometer: it tells you whether your economy is going faster or slower. As in cars, a speedometer is useful but doesn’t tell you everything you want to know. For example, it won’t tell you whether you are overheating, or about to run out of fuel.

Above all, the speedometer doesn’t tell you whether or not you’re going in the right direction. If you suggest to a car driver that you might be on the wrong road, and the response is “then we must go faster”, you might think that’s pretty stupid. Yet this is what happens whenever complaints about the state of the economy elicit a commitment to boost growth.

Science/TechnologyFacebook Introduces Group Payments In Messenger by emecheboy2(op): 6:03pm On Apr 17, 2017
Since 2015, you could send and receive money on Facebook Messenger, but until now, these person-to-person payments have just been possible between two people.

Starting today for Android and desktop, you can send or receive money between groups of people on Messenger. It’s free, simple, fast and secure. Whether you’re splitting a restaurant bill or chipping in for a group gift, all you need to do is go to a new or existing Messenger group conversation to get started.

Enter the amount you want to request per person or the total sum to divide evenly, either including yourself in the calculation or not. Finally, you can specify what the money is for — maybe a pizza party, teacher gift or more. Once you’re ready, tap Request.

To make it super simple to keep track of everything, a message will appear in the group conversation showing who has paid. At any time, you can also view the Request Details in full-screen. Coordinating group payments has never been easier.

As always in Messenger, you don’t need to remember a password, your debit card information is safe and secure, and the service is totally free. Messenger group payments is available in the US for now.

Science/TechnologyApple To Start Testing Self-driving Cars by emecheboy2(op): 9:19pm On Apr 14, 2017
Apple will begin testing self-driving car technology in California, its first public move into a highly competitive field that could radically change transportation.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles awarded Apple a permit to test autonomous vehicles Friday and disclosed that information on its website.

A spokesman for the department said the permit will cover three vehicles — all 2015 Lexus RX 450h hybrid SUVs — and six individual drivers. The state requires a human behind the wheel during such testing.

Apple confirmed that it will begin testing self-driving technology in the state, but provided no details.

It pointed to a December statement it provided to federal regulators that stated Apple is investing heavily in “machine learning and autonomous systems” and noted “many potential applications” for these technologies.

EducationThe World’s Best Universities By Subject According To QS by emecheboy2(op): 8:09pm On Apr 14, 2017
QS produces a comprehensive ranking of the world’s best universities, broken down by region and subject.

QS’s latest ranking shows the best schools on the planet in 46 different subject areas, including standard subjects like business and history, all the way to more obscure degrees such as mining.

In total, 18 different universities are considered to be the best in the world in at least one of the 46 subjects, although 15 schools top only one, with three taking the top spot in a combined 31 different subjects.

The three highest scoring universities are perhaps unsurprising given their huge prestige, but many of the other schools featured are less well known and specialize in one or two areas.

Check out the list below. The number in brackets represents the number of academic disciplines each university topped QS’ ranking in.

Wageningen University (1) — Located in the Dutch town of Wageningen, around 50 miles from the capital, Amsterdam, this university is paradise for students wanting to study degrees related to agriculture and forestry.

Royal College of Art (1) — For the second consecutive year, London’s RCA is the best place on earth to study art and design focused subjects.

University of Southern California (1) — USC ranks first in QS’ ranking for doing a degree in communications and media studies. The school also excels at varsity sports.

University of Hong Kong (1) – If you want to spend your life ensuring people have a mouth full of perfect, white teeth, then the University of Hong Kong is the place to go. QS ranks it as the best school in the world when it comes to a dentistry degree. The university was the best in the world for dentistry last year as well.

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (1) — ETH is home to the best degree programme for students wanting to study earth and marine sciences. The university boasts more than 20 Nobel Prizes, and once educated perhaps the world’s most famous scientist, Albert Einstein.

University College London (1) — QS ranks UCL’s Institute of Education as the best place on earth to study for a degree in education. It currently has over 4,000 students studying for a variety of education-based degrees.

Loughborough University (1) — In the UK, Loughborough has a reputation for being incredibly good at student sport, as well as the teaching of sports science. That reputation is also global, with QS ranking it as the best university of earth for sport-related subjects.

University of California, Berkeley (1) — Often regarded as the academic pinnacle of the University of California, Berkeley is located just across the bay from tech hub San Francisco. However, it’s not technology based subjects where Berkeley excels. QS ranks it as the best university in the world for studying environmental sciences for another year, having topped the same category in 2016.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas (1) — Las Vegas is famous for one thing, and one thing only, entertainment. It is perhaps unsurprising then that its university is the best in the world for the teaching of subjects related to hospitality.

Colorado School of Mines (1) — Given it’s name it’s probably not surprising that the university excels when it comes to mining and mineral engineering, where it is ranked as the best university in the world. It is located in the town of Golden, Colorado.

University of Pennsylvania (1) – Located in Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, Penn, as it is known, is top of QS’ rankings when it comes to getting an education in nursing.
The Juilliard School (1) — New York’s Juilliard School is the most famous and best place on earth to study performing arts like drama, musical theatre, and dance.

University of Pittsburgh (1) — Another school to excel in a single subject for consecutive years, Pittsburgh is the go-to destination for philosophy students globally.

University of California, Davis (1) — Just outside the city of Sacramento, Davis is one of the 10 constituent campuses of the University of California. It’s the place to go if you want to become a vet, ranking first of any university on earth for another year after topping the same category in 2016.

Oxford University (4) — Last year the UK rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge was pretty close, but in 2017, Cambridge failed to top a single category, meaning that Oxford runs out comfortable winner. Among the subjects where it is best in the world is English Language and Literature.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (12) — Topping the chart in everything from architecture to mechanical engineering, MIT truly is one of the world’s global elite universities, and probably the best place on earth to study science.

Harvard University (15) — Harvard is the best university in the world for almost a third of the 46 subjects listed by QS, including heavy hitters like law, business & management, and political & international studies.

Science/TechnologyiWitness App Turns Phone Into Virtual Eyewitness To Crime by emecheboy2(op): 7:46pm On Apr 11, 2017
A Seattle man thinks he’s discovered the perfect eyewitness: a crime observer that never forgets and never makes mistakes. It’s also available on the app store.
Known as “iWitness,” the app sounds off an alarm, records video that cannot be erased, and alerts authorities with a mere tap on the screen of a smartphone.

“This will save lives,” David Remer, the app’s founder and CEO, told Fox News on Tuesday.

“It is the perfect deterrent to crime,” said Remer. “The last thing a perpetrator wants is a witness.”

The iWitness app is intended for use when a person is alone and in a potentially unsafe situation — like a walk through a dark parking lot or college campus.

After registering, the app takes one click to arm. Once armed, audio, video and an individual’s exact location are recorded and saved to a secure cloud server.

Another tap or shake of the device and 911 will be called automatically. The app also sends emails and text messages to six friends and family members pre-listed as emergency contacts, while emitting a bright light and sounding off an alarm.

Friends and relatives will receive a street map and the exact location of the invidivual as well as a link to video recorded by the phone.

Remer said it is impossible for a criminal to erase or otherwise destroy any images or videos recorded by the app because they are transmitted off site immediately to a safe cloud storage.

“This witness cannot be tampered with,” he said. “Once it sends video to the cloud, it’s there and cannot be deleted.”

“We want the criminal community to know this,” Remer said.

Monthly charges

While the app is designed to bring immediate help if a person is attacked, its real purpose it to prevent crime from occurring by scaring off a perpetrator.

Remer first designed the app about five years ago but the latest version was unveiled in October. The concept, he said, is a simple one — and life-saving.

“Just about everyone has a data system on their phone and a camera these days,” he said. “We’re using exisiting technology and not creating any complicated code.”

The iWitness app is free to download, but costs $2.99 a month to use.

The service it provides, Remer said, is priceless.

“We could have a life-saving device in all phones,” he said. “My goal is to put this on every phone in the world. I don’t know of anything you could have on your phone that is more important.”

WebmastersRussian Computer Programmer Arrested In Spain by emecheboy2(op): 7:24pm On Apr 09, 2017
A Russian computer programmer, Pyotr Levashov, has been arrested in the Spanish city of Barcelona, a spokesman for the Russian embassy in Madrid said on Sunday.

Russian television station RT reported that Levashov was suspected of being involved in hacking attacks linked to alleged interference in last year’s U.S. election.

He was arrested under a U.S. international arrest warrant, RT reported on its website, citing Spanish police.

The embassy spokesman declined to give details on the reasons for Levashov’s arrest. The Spanish police and interior ministry were not available for comment.

Spanish authorities notified the embassy of Levashov’s arrest on Friday, the spokesman said.

The U.S. government has formally accused Russia of hacking Democratic Party emails to help the campaign of Republican President Donald Trump. The U.S. Congress is also examining links between Russia and Trump during the election campaign.

Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have repeatedly denied that Russia tried to influence the election.

In January, Spanish police arrested another Russian computer programmer, whose name was given as “Lisov” and who was wanted by the United States under an international arrest warrant.

The Stad Ship Tunnel will let ships avoid part of the Stadlandet peninsula, which is narrow and where the weather conditions pose a possible danger for ships, NBC News reports.

The tunnel will be around 118 feet wide and 162 feet tall. Ships that weigh up to 16,000 tons will be able to travel within the tunnel, which is expected to cost around $314 million.

The construction of the tunnel, which will cut through the rocky peninsula, will require engineers to take out eight million tons of rock, Terje Andreassen, the project manager, told NBC.Work will begin in 2019, with the project expected to finish in 2023.

Science/TechnologyTwitter Lite Version Now Available For Data-starved Users by emecheboy2(op): 2:23pm On Apr 06, 2017
Twitter has launched a faster version of its mobile service on Wednesday aimed at people with sporadic connections or little data on their smartphone plans, hoping to pick up users in harder-to-reach emerging markets.

The company calls the version Twitter Lite and it will be aimed largely at users outside the United States. Twitter Lite works through a web browser, not a stand-alone phone application, but its appearance and functionality are nearly identical to what app users experience, according to a preview shown to Reuters.

The launch comes on the heels of similar products from other U.S. tech firms. Facebook released Facebook Lite in 2015 and on Tuesday, Alphabet Inc’s YouTube unveiled a low-data mobile app designed for India.

San Francisco-based Twitter lags behind those companies in building a user base. It had 319 million average monthly active users at the end of last year, up 4 percent year-over-year but still a fraction of Facebook’s 1.9 billion users.

HealthDepression Tops List Of Causes Of ill Health Says WHO by emecheboy2(op): 1:47am On Apr 06, 2017
Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. According to the latest estimates from WHO, more than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015.

Lack of support for people with mental disorders, coupled with a fear of stigma, prevent many from accessing the treatment they need to live healthy, productive lives.

The new estimates have been released in the lead-up to World Health Day on 7 April, the high point in WHO’s year-long campaign “Depression: let’s talk”. The overall goal of the campaign is that more people with depression, everywhere in the world, both seek and get help.

TV/Movies‘boss Baby’ Dethrones ‘beauty And The Beast’ With $49M Debut by emecheboy2(op): 9:21pm On Apr 02, 2017
The taskmaster toddler of “Boss Baby” dethroned Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” at the box office with a $49 million debut, handing its star Alec Baldwin what President Donald Trump might call a “huge” no. 1 opening. Paramount Pictures suffered another flop with its controversy-plagued “Ghost in the Shell.”

The DreamWorks Animation release from 20th Century Fox, starring Baldwin as a suit-clad baby, narrowly edged out the previous two-week leader, according to studio estimates Sunday. The live-action “Beauty and the Beast” took in $48 million in its third weekend. Final North American ticket sales will be released Monday.

“We expected a decent opening. We didn’t expect to be number one,” said Chris Aronson, Fox distribution chief.

Despite the popularity of “Beauty and the Beast” (nearly $400 million domestically in 17 days, and $876.3 million globally), “Boss Baby” was able to attract its own family audience.

Aronson credited that partly to the appeal of Baldwin, whose impression of Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live” has lately been ubiquitous. “Boss Baby” also evokes Baldwin’s old “Glengarry Glen Ross” character with quips like “Cookies are for closers.”

“Alec Baldwin’s voice is recognizable, in general. But he’s so topical now because of some of the other things he’s doing right now,” said Aronson. “It’s a very distinctive voice, and if you put it on a baby, it’s funny.”

“Ghost in the Shell,” a remake of a classic 1995 Japanese anime film, couldn’t compete with either family-friendly release. The dystopian science-fiction thriller, starring Scarlett Johansson, opened with just $19 million, a poor showing for a film that cost about $110 million to make.

Many took issue with the casting of Johansson as the cyborg protagonist who was Japanese in the original, calling it another example of Hollywood “whitewashing.”

“We had hopes for better results domestically. I think the conversation regarding casting impacted the reviews,” said Kyle Davies, domestic distribution chief for Paramount. “You’ve got a movie that is very important to the fanboys since it’s based on a Japanese anime movie.

So you’re always trying to thread that needle between honoring the source material and make a movie for a mass audience. That’s challenging but clearly the reviews didn’t help.”

Audiences appeared to agree with critics, giving the film a mediocre B CinemaScore.

“Ghost in the Shell” will instead hope to find more eager moviegoers in Japan (where the casting controversy has not resonated) and China next weekend. Opening in most other international countries this weekend, “Ghosts in the Shell” took in a modest $40.1 million.

Paramount has recently suffered a string of box-office disappointments. Last week, Viacom Inc. hired former Fox film head Jim Gianopulos to turn around its film division.

In limited release, Focus Features’ “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” starring Jessica Chastain, opened well with $3.3 million at 541 locations. Based on Diane Ackerman’s non-fiction book, the film is about a woman’s efforts to save Jews during the Holocaust. It will expand next weekend.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers also are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Boss Baby,” $49 million ($36.5 million international).

2. “Beauty and the Beast,” $48 million. ($67 million international).

3. “Ghost in the Shell,” $19 million ($40.1 million international).

4. “Power Rangers,” $14.5 million.

5. “Kong: Skull Island,” $8.8 million.

6. “Logan,” $6.2 million.

7. “Get Out,” $5.8 million.

8. “Life,” $5.6 million

9. “Chips,” $4.1 million.

10. “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” $3.4 million.

InvestmentJeff Bezos Is Now The World’s Second Richest Person by emecheboy2(op): 8:33am On Mar 30, 2017
Jeff Bezos has leapt past Amancio Ortega and Warren Buffett to become the world’s second-richest person.

Bezos, 53, added $1.5 billion to his fortune as Amazon.com Inc. rose $18.32 on Wednesday, the day after the e-commerce giant said it plans to buy Dubai-based online retailer Souq.com.

Bezos has a net worth of $75.6 billion on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, $700 million more than Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s Buffett and $1.3 billion above Ortega, the founder of Inditex S.A. and Europe’s richest person.

Amazon’s founder has added $10.2 billion this year to his wealth and $7 billion since the global equities rally began following the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president on Nov. 8.

The rise is the third biggest on the Bloomberg index in 2017, after Chinese parcel-delivery billionaire Wang Wei’s $18.4 billion gain and an $11.4 billion rise for Facebook Inc. founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Buffett, who’s added $1.7 billion in 2017, has shed $4.7 billion since his fortune peaked at $79.6 billion on March 1. Ortega is up $2.1 billion year-to-date. Bezos remains $10.4 billion behind Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the world’s richest person with $86 billion.

Science/TechnologySwatch Working On Its Own Smartwatch OS by emecheboy2(op): 8:36pm On Mar 16, 2017
At a moment when it’s hard to be bullish about smartwatches, Swatch isn’t just embracing the category. It’s going all in.

Swatch, Switzerland’s biggest watchmaker, isn’t just planning to launch a smartwatch, the company is actually developing its own operating system in hopes of competing with the likes of Apple and Samsung (which uses a forked version of Tizen).

The news comes via an interview with Swatch CEO Nick Hayek, who stated, “there’s a possibility for wearables to develop as a consumer product, but you have to miniaturize and have an independent operating system.” The statement comes on the heel of Tag Heuer’s unveiling of a new super high-end modular timepiece.

But Tag’s product, while innovative (not to mention prohibitively expensive), was built around the latest version of Android Wear, a tact taken by fellow traditional timepiece maker Fossil for its umbrella of branded products. Swatch will be taking things into its own hands with a smart addition to its Tissot line due out sometime around the end of next year.

PoliticsDasuki Loses Bid To Consolidate Charges by emecheboy2(op): 6:07pm On Mar 16, 2017
Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf of the FCT High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Thursday, March 16, dismissed the application by Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), former National Security Adviser, NSA, seeking to consolidate the two separate charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Dasuki’s counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, had on March 2 while moving the motion told the court that his application dated February 22, 2017 before the court seeking to consolidate the two charges HC/ FCT/CR/42 and HC/ FCT/CR/ 43 against his client was brought pursuant to Sections 211, 212 and 213 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015.

Raji, while urging the Court to grant the consolidation of the two charges argued that the motion is designed to avoid the abuse of court processes and double jeopardy.
However, EFCC counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, opposed the application vehemently, informing the court, of a counter affidavit he had filed dated February 28, 2017.
He told the court that, “the application is very unfortunate” arguing that “there was a similar application by the defendant dated May 21, 2016 before the court on the same prayer which was yet to be moved and never withdrawn and so it is a clear abuse of process”.

Jacobs reminded the court that all parties had agreed to have the two cases tried before the same judge which necessitated a letter from the then NBA President, J. B. Daudu’s, to the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court advising that the two cases be handled by a judge in the interest of speedy dispensation of justice.

The learned silk, who described the application as a ploy to frustrate the trial urged the court to discountenance and dismiss it.
