Microsoft Corporation on Monday announced it has reached an agreement to acquire GitHub, the world’s leading software development platform where more than 28 million developers learn, share and collaborate to create the future. Together, the two companies will empower developers to achieve more at every stage of the development lifecycle, accelerate enterprise use of GitHub, and bring Microsoft’s developer tools and services to new audiences. “Microsoft is a developer-first company, and by joining forces with GitHub we strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. “We recognize the community responsibility we take on with this agreement and will do our best work to empower every developer to build, innovate and solve the world’s most pressing challenges.” Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. Subject to customary closing conditions and completion of regulatory review, the acquisition is expected to close by the end of the calendar year. GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos and will operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries. Developers will continue to be able to use the programming languages, tools and operating systems of their choice for their projects — and will still be able to deploy their code to any operating system, any cloud and any device. Microsoft Corporate Vice President Nat Friedman, founder of Xamarin and an open source veteran, will assume the role of GitHub CEO. GitHub’s current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will become a Microsoft technical fellow, reporting to Executive Vice President Scott Guthrie, to work on strategic software initiatives. “I’m extremely proud of what GitHub and our community have accomplished over the past decade, and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead. The future of software development is bright, and I’m thrilled to be joining forces with Microsoft to help make it a reality,” Wanstrath said. “Their focus on developers lines up perfectly with our own, and their scale, tools and global cloud will play a huge role in making GitHub even more valuable for developers everywhere.” GitHub is home for modern developers and the world’s most popular destination for open source projects and software innovation. The platform hosts a growing network of developers in nearly every country representing more than 1.5 million companies across healthcare, manufacturing, technology, financial services, retail and more. Upon closing, Microsoft expects GitHub’s financials to be reported as part of the Intelligent Cloud segment. Microsoft expects the acquisition will be accretive to operating income in fiscal year 2020 on a non-GAAP basis, and to have minimal dilution of less than 1 percent to earnings per share in fiscal years 2019 and 2020 on a non-GAAP basis, based on the expected close time frame. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/06/06/microsoft-acquire-github-7-5-billion/

A Nigerian graduate student, Lolade Siyonbola, sparked outrage about racial profiling Monday after she posted a video of her extended interaction with Yale campus police officers and the white student who called them. Like many students in the midst of finals, Lolade Siyonbola, a 34-year-old graduate student in the African Studies department at Yale, decided to pull an all-nighter on Tuesday evening. After lying down for a brief nap in a common room between her heap of overdue papers, she woke up at 1:30 a.m. to the sound of woman saying she was going to call the police. “You’re not supposed to be sleeping here,” said the woman, before engaging in what has now become a familiar tale of law enforcement use in the United States: calling the cops on a black person who has committed no crime. What followed was a tense, 17-minute encounter with police recorded by Lolade Siyonbola, in which she had to prove in several different ways that she was indeed a student at the ivy-league university. "I deserve to be here. I pay tuition like everybody else," Siyonbola, a 34-year-old graduate student in African studies, said after police asked her for identification. "I'm not going to justify my existence here. "I really don't know if there's a justification for you actually being in the building," she said to the officers, after confirming her enrollment. Lolade Siyonbola even unlocked her dorm-room door in front of the officers to show she lived there after they insisted on seeing her ID. She posted two separate videos on Facebook, which have since gone viral with over one million views and 10,000 shares. Throughout the longer video, officers are repeatedly heard justifying their involvement to Siyonbola, claiming their responsibility was to ensure that she “belonged there,” and that they were determined to “get to the bottom of this.” Yale University needs more work to become "truly inclusive," a dean at the Ivy League school said after a white student there called police on a black classmate who had fallen asleep in their dormitory’s common area. "Incidents like that of last night remind us of the continued work needed to make Yale a truly inclusive place," Lynn Cooley, the dean of Yale's graduate school of arts and sciences, said in an email to students Tuesday. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/05/11/white-yale-student-calls-police-napping-nigerian-student-lolade-siyonbola/

The five African qualified teams for the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 namely Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia, will each receive an advance of US$ 2 Million of their prize money from FIFA towards their preparations for the Mundial. The decision comes on the heels of negotiations initiated by CAF President Ahmad with the FIFA administration, leading to the exceptional agreement granted on 12 April 2018. It follows a decision by the CAF Emergency Committee held on 1 December 2017, and ratified by the CAF Executive Committee on 10 January 2018, to provide exceptional financial support to the five African representatives towards their preparations for the impending tournament in Russia. “This agreement, for an advance on the financial allocation by FIFA, aims to allow representatives in World Cups to have a harmonious preparation and to settle beforehand the question of bonuses due the players, which in the previous editions of the competitions has led to situations that affected badly the image of African football, with a considerable impact on team performances,” said CAF President Ahmad. The five teams have thus been directed to contact the FIFA Financial Division in that regard. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/05/01/whatsapp-ceo-jan-koum-leave-facebook-amid-privacy-flap/

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum is breaking ties with his company’s parent, Facebook, amid a privacy scandal that has dogged the social network for weeks. Jan Koum confirmed his departure from WhatsApp Monday on his Facebook page . The Washington Post reported that Koum also plans to resign from Facebook’s board of directors. Facebook wouldn’t comment on that report. Facebook has been trying to defuse questions about whether it can be trusted with the reams of personal information it collects to sell ads and whether its social network does more harm than good. Jan Koum didn’t elaborate on his reasons for leaving, other to say it was time to “move on” so he could spend more time “collecting rare air-cooled Porsches, working on my cars and playing ultimate frisbee.” But Koum also may have been embroiled in a rift with Facebook management over the parent company’s voracious appetite for personal information and WhatsApp’s dedication to user privacy, according to the Post report. WhatsApp uses encryption technology that makes messages indecipherable to everyone but the sender and recipient. WhatsApp also runs no ads. Facebook’s enormous profits, meanwhile, are powered almost entirely by advertising targeted to its users’ interests. Koum’s defection could put CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an uncomfortable position Tuesday, when he takes the stage at a company conference. In attendance will be more than 5,000 app software developers, some of whom may be WhatsApp users. Zuckerberg is already expected to reiterate some of the apologies he’s been offering in the wake of revelations that Facebook allowed Cambridge Analytica, a data mining firm tied to President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, to obtain personal information from as many as 87 million of its users. In a reply to Koum’s Facebook post, Zuckerberg told him he would miss working together. “I’m grateful for everything you’ve done to help connect the world, and for everything you’ve taught me, including about encryption and its ability to take power from centralized systems and put it back in people’s hands,” Zuckerberg wrote. Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014, though without ever devising a clear strategy for how that service would make money. Both Koum, and WhatApp’s other co-founder, Brian Acton, had expressed an aversion to allowing ads into their service, causing analysts to wonder if the acquisition would ever pay off for Facebook. Acton left WhatsApp late last year and joined in the growing backlash against Facebook, endorsing a campaign that encouraged users to delete their profiles from the social network. But few of Facebook’s 2.2 billion users have departed so far, based on the audience and revenue growth the company reported last week. Jan Koum also signaled years ago that he would take a stand against Facebook if the company’s push to increase its profits demanded radical changes in the way WhatsApp operates. In a blog post written when Facebook announced the biggest acquisition in its history, Koum wrote that the deal wouldn’t have happened if WhatsApp “had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product.” https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/05/01/whatsapp-ceo-jan-koum-leave-facebook-amid-privacy-flap/

T-Mobile US Inc agreed on Sunday to acquire peer Sprint Corp, in an all-stock deal that will combine the third and fourth largest U.S. wireless carriers and is expected to attract regulatory scrutiny over its impact on consumers. The agreement caps four years of on- and off- talks between the companies, setting the stage for the creation of a carrier with 127 million customers that will be a more formidable competitor to the No.1 and No.2 wireless players, Verizon Communications Inc and AT&T Inc. U.S. regulators, which have challenged in court AT&T’s $85 billion deal to buy U.S. media company Time Warner Inc, are expected to grill Sprint and T-Mobile on how they will price their combined wireless offerings. The breakthrough in the companies’ negotiations, first reported by Reuters on Thursday, came after T-Mobile majority-owner Deutsche Telekom AG and Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp, which controls Sprint, agreed on a structure that will allow Deutsche Telekom to continue to consolidate the combined company, which will have a market value of over $80 billions, on its books. Deutsche Telekom will own 42 percent of the combined company. Sprint’s and T-Mobile’s first round of merger talks ended unsuccessfully in 2014 after U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration expressed antitrust concerns about the deal. Under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, regulators have continued to fret about consumer prices. The U.S. government has opened a probe into alleged coordination by AT&T, Verizon Communications and a telecommunications standards organization to hinder consumers from easily switching wireless carriers, a person briefed on the matter said earlier this month. The second round of talks between Sprint and T-Mobile ended in November over valuation disagreements, although Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Hoettges, left the door open at the time, saying: “You always meet twice in life.” Since then, Sprint’s shares lost about a fifth of their value amid questions about how the company can compete effectively under the weight of its long-term debt of more than $32 billion. Softbank has been looking to trim its own debt as well, which reached 15.8 trillion yen ($147 billion) as of the end of December. It has said it is planning to raise cash by taking its Japanese mobile phone unit public this year. Failure to clinch a deal last November left SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, a dealmaker who raised close to $100 billion for his Vision Fund to invest in technology companies, in search of other options for Sprint. INVESTING IN 5G TECHNOLOGY Even though Sprint’s customer base has expanded under CEO Marcelo Claure, growth has been driven by discounting. Analysts say that, without T-Mobile, Sprint lacks the scale needed to invest in its network and to compete in a saturated market. T-Mobile has fared better than Sprint, even if it remains a distant third to Verizon and AT&T. It has managed to score sustained market share gains, as innovative offerings, improving network performance and good customer service attract new customers, according to Moody’s Investors Service Inc. T-Mobile became the first major U.S. carrier to eliminate two-year contracts, a shift quickly embraced by consumers and copied by competitors. The company has also badgered rivals with its unlimited data plans. Both Sprint and T-Mobile are far behind Verizon and AT&T in upgrading their network to accommodate next generation 5G wireless technology. Even after their merger, the combined company’s budget to invest in 5G will be smaller than Verizon or AT&T’s. However, Sprint and T-Mobile hope the deal will give them more firepower to participate in auction for spectrum to develop 5G. They plan to participate in a spectrum auction in late fall. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/04/29/t-mobile-agrees-acquire-sprint/

A few dozen superheroes lifted Avengers: Infinity War to a record $250 million in ticket sales over the weekend, narrowly surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the highest opening weekend of all-time. According to Disney’s estimates Sunday, the Marvel Studios superhero smorgasbord bested the previous record set by “The Force Awakens.” Accounting for inflation, the “Star Wars” reboot would still reign with about $260 million in 2018 dollars. Infinity War also set a new global opening record with $630 million, even though it’s yet to open in China, the world’s second-largest movie market. It opens there May 11. “The Fate of the Furious” previously held the worldwide mark with $541.9 million. In a very distant second place was John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” with $10.7 million. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/04/29/infinity-war-opens-record-250m-passing-star-wars/

G7 Security Ministers have backed the INTERPOL Global Task Force on Human Trafficking to combat this multi-billion-dollar form of modern day slavery. The Ministerial support was outlined in the commitments paper issued at the end of the two-day (23 and 24 April) meeting in Toronto attended by INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock. “Given the complexities and transnational aspects of human trafficking, INTERPOL is ideally and uniquely placed to support its member countries target the organized crime networks involved,” said Secretary General Stock. “With victims including men, women and children of all ages, human trafficking is a serious threat to human dignity. A global challenge to sustainable development, it is the most vulnerable communities which are frequently targeted,” added the INTERPOL Chief. Mr Stock also pointed to increasing ties between human trafficking and other various forms of organized crime including arms and drug trafficking. In some regions links have also been established with extremist groups, coercing women and girls into marriages or sexual slavery, and pressing men and boys into forced labour or combat. Running projects supported by Canada, Germany and the USA, the INTERPOL Global Task Force on Human Trafficking has significant experience in coordinating operations targeting forced labour of children and other forms of human trafficking around the world. Operation Intercops-Spartacus III involved 25 countries in South and Central America, resulting in thousands of trafficking victims being rescued, 134 arrests and the dismantlement of seven organized crime networks. INTERPOL’s Operation Epervier across five African countries saw the rescue of 500 victims from sexual exploitation and forced labour, as well as the arrest of 40 suspected traffickers. Recognizing the need for multi-agency cooperation, in addition to law enforcement officers Epervier also involved prosecutors, international organizations, social services and NGOs. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/04/28/g7-ministers-endorse-interpol-global-task-force-human-trafficking/

Nintendo reported solid sales and profit for the fiscal fourth quarter, powered by brisk demand for its Switch machines. The company also announced Thursday that it will be getting a new president. Shuntaro Furukawa, director at The Pokemon Company, will replace Tatsumi Kimishima subject to approval at a general shareholders meeting in June. The move is an attempt to hand over the leadership to a younger generation, said spokesman Kenichiro Matsuura. Kimishima, 68, will retire and become an adviser to the company. Furukawa, 46, a graduate of Tokyo’s prestigious Waseda University, joined Nintendo in 1994 and has helped oversee global marketing. Kyoto-based Nintendo has had its ups and downs over the years, but it has recently appeared to be on a turnaround track. January-March profit for the Japanese maker of Super Mario and Pokemon games totaled 4.4 billion yen ($40 million), reversing a 394 million yen loss racked up the previous year. Nintendo is getting a lift from strong sales of the Switch, a hybrid game machine that works as both a console and a tablet. The company said it plans “to leverage this momentum to reach an even broader range of consumers,” pointing to the Nintendo Labo, which it rolled out this month. Nintendo Labo allows players to use the Switch with cardboard concoctions that enable them to use it as a musical instrument, a fishing rod and other items. Quarterly sales rose 12 percent year-on-year to 198.7 billion yen ($1.8 billion). More than 15 million Switch consoles were sold during the fiscal year through March, according to Nintendo. It’s expecting to sell another 20 million during the fiscal year through March next year. The company said sales of the 3DS handheld also kept up even after Switch went on sale a year ago. Nintendo, which brought the world the FamiCom game machine in the 1980s, is projecting profit for the fiscal year through March 2019 to grow 18 percent to 165 billion yen ($1.5 billion). For the fiscal year through March, Nintendo recorded a profit of 139.6 billion yen ($1.3 billion), better than what it had expected. The company said its smart device game software, such as “Mario Kart Tour,” is also performing well. Nintendo had initially shunned games for cellphones and other devices besides its own machines, but has reversed that strategy. Other such games it has released include “Super Mario Run” and “Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.”

These incredible pictures shows a man who had a motorcycle key stuck in his skull during a brawl. The 19-year-old was rushed to hospital with the key wedged nearly two inches into his head and was under the knife for 3.5 hours. A neurosurgeon who operated said the young man could have died if he had suffered internal bleeding. “On April 18 at around 11 a.m., in a brawl at his village, the teenager was assaulted by someone and a bike key got lodged deep into his skull,” Dr. Shailendra Uttamro Markad, who operated on the unidentified teen, said. “He was brought to my out-patient department at around 3:30 p.m., and after seeing the scan report we started the surgery at around 6:30 p.m. on the same day,” Markad said. The man was treated at Anand Rishi Hospital and craniotomy surgery, where a bone flap is removed so the brain can be accessed, was performed to remove the key. He was discharged three days after the incident and is said to be making a good recovery. “The surgery lasted about three and a half hours, during which we opened part of his skull to remove the lodged key,” Markad said. “The victim has since recovered and is doing fine. He was discharged on April 21 evening, and is expected for a follow-up check this week.” The fight happened in Ghodegaon village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, India. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/04/24/man-cheats-death-stabbed-skull-key/

SpaceX has chosen to manufacture its planned big, new rocket in the Port of Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Monday in his annual state-of-the city speech. The mayor said it’s a “vehicle that holds the promise of taking humanity even deeper into the cosmos than ever before.” The city Board of Harbor Commissioners will vote Thursday on whether to lease 19 acres to SpaceX for the manufacturing site. The commission’s staff has recommended approval of an initial 10-year term, with two 10-year options, at an annual rent of approximately $1.38 million. While SpaceX calls its existing rockets Falcons, CEO Elon Musk simply refers to the planned new rocket as the BFR. It’s intended to serve all purposes, from missions into Earth orbit and out to the moon and Mars. Musk has said he aspires to launch his first cargo missions to Mars in 2022. Musk also proposes to use the BFR for high-speed trips from point-to-point on Earth, such as New York to Shanghai in 39 minutes. SpaceX, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne, already uses the Port of Los Angeles for missions that recover Falcon 9 first-stage boosters on a floating platform in the Pacific and when it recovers supply capsules that parachute into the ocean after missions to the international space station. “SpaceX has called the Port of Los Angeles home to our west coast recovery operations since 2012 and we truly appreciate the City of Los Angeles’ continued partnership,” Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX president and COO, said in a statement. “As announced today by Mayor Garcetti, the Port will play an increasingly important role in our mission to help make humanity multi-planetary as SpaceX begins production development of BFR — our next generation rocket and spaceship system capable of carrying crew and cargo to the Moon, Mars and beyond.” The agenda for this week’s Harbor Commission meeting says the SpaceX’s new operation in the port would be a research, design and manufacturing facility for rockets and spacecraft. “The rockets, once complete, would be too large for reasonable transport by road and thus must be transported by barge or ship, necessitating that the facility be water adjacent,” it says. The facility would have potential to employ 700 people. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/04/17/spacex-build-new-mars-rocket-port-los-angeles/

For the first time, a form of immune therapy treatment that boosts the immune system greatly improved survival in people newly diagnosed with the most common form of lung cancer. It’s the biggest win so far for immunotherapy, which has had much of its success until now in less common cancers. In the study, Merck’s Keytruda, given with standard chemotherapy, cut in half the risk of dying or having the cancer worsen, compared to chemo alone after nearly one year. The results are expected to quickly set a new standard of care for about 70,000 patients each year in the United States whose lung cancer has already spread by the time it’s found. Another study found that an immunotherapy combo — the Bristol-Myers Squibb drugs Opdivo and Yervoy — worked better than chemo for delaying the time until cancer worsened in advanced lung cancer patients whose tumors have many gene flaws, as nearly half do. But the benefit lasted less than two months on average and it’s too soon to know if the combo improves overall survival, as Keytruda did. All of these immune therapy treatments worked for only about half of patients, but that’s far better than chemo has done in the past. “We’re not nearly where we need to be yet,” said Dr. Roy Herbst, a Yale Cancer Center lung expert who had no role in the studies. Results were discussed Monday at an American Association for Cancer Research conference in Chicago and published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The studies were sponsored by the drugmakers, and many study leaders and Herbst consult for the companies. ABOUT THE DRUGS Keytruda, Yervoy and Opdivo are called checkpoint inhibitors. They remove a cloak that some cancer cells have that hides them from the immune system. The drugs are given through IVs and cost about $12,500 a month. Keytruda was approved last year as an initial treatment with chemo for the most common form of advanced lung cancer, but doctors have been leery to use it because that was based on a small study that did not show whether it prolongs life. The new study, led by Dr. Leena Gandhi of NYU’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, gives that proof. In it, 616 patients were given chemo and some also received Keytruda. Those not given Keytruda were allowed to switch to it if their cancer worsened. After one year, 69 percent of people originally assigned to Keytruda were alive versus 49 percent of the others — a result that experts called remarkable considering that the second group’s survival was improved because half of them wound up switching. How much it ultimately will extend life isn’t known — more than half in the Keytruda group are still alive; median survival was just over 11 months for the others. The Keytruda combo also delayed the time until cancer worsened — an average of nine months versus five months for the chemo-only group. That’s a big difference for such an advanced cancer, said Dr. Alice Shaw, a Massachusetts General Hospital lung cancer expert and one of the conference leaders. “This is really a pivotal study … a new standard of care,” said Shaw, who has no ties to the drugmakers. Rates of serious side effects were similar, but twice as many in the Keytruda group dropped out because of them. More than 4 percent of that group developed lung inflammation and three patients died of it. THE COMPETITION Dr. Matthew Hellmann of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York led a study testing the Opdivo-Yervoy combo versus chemo in a slightly different group of newly diagnosed advanced lung cancer patients. The study design was changed after it was underway to look at results according to patients’ tumor mutation burden — a measure of how flawed their cancer genes are, according to a profiling test by Foundation Medicine. Medicare recently agreed to cover the $3,000 test for advanced cancers. Of 679 patients, 299 had a high number of gene flaws in their tumors. In that group, survival without worsening of disease was 43 percent after one year for those on the immunotherapy drugs versus 13 percent of those on chemo. The immunotherapy drugs did not help people with fewer tumor gene flaws. “We have a tool that helps us determine who are the patients that are most likely to benefit from this combination,” Hellmann said. The median time until cancer worsened was about 7 months on the immunotherapy drugs versus 5.5 months for chemo. Serious side effects were a little more common in the chemo group. Another rival, Genentech, recently announced that its checkpoint inhibitor, Tecentriq, improved survival in a study similar to the one testing Keytruda. Details are expected in a couple months. https://www.phoenixnewsonline.com/2018/04/17/immune-therapy-scores-big-win-lung-cancer-study/
