nairalanda1: 1.Subsidy is not bad, but you have to have the money to pay for it. Here in NIgeria, our tax to gdp is too low to pay for subsides. As for the oyel money....90% is going on debt servicing , and we produce as much as Libya, which has 8 million people, and which can afford to subsidise. We have 200 million people, and far more needs than LIbya. Wey the money go come from.?
2.US, UK, Russia, China, and Europe pay what is called production subsides. In other words, they pay money to the refining companies to see if they can reduce costs. The refineries and market still set the prices. Also, US Has some form of financial aid to the poor re fuel, but you have to be means tested to see if you deserve it.(and if the government thinks you earn above a certain level, ye don't qualify).
US by the way, fuel prices vary from place to place. Some states eg California, are very very expensive.
(Also spend some time on US sites like reddit...someone posts a thread showing a photo of a fuel station in the USA from say 1949 or 1960's where fuel costs 50 cents a gallon, and people would be complaining like NIgerians, lol).
Here, we made the refining companies sell fuel below production cost, and paid them a subsidy that doesn't adequately cover the production cost. That is how we went from 40000bpd capacity in 1986 to 92000bpd in 2011, to 6000bpd in 2019. And because domestic refining was not profitable, the refineries all collapse.
Venezuela also does subsides like we do. Fuel costs N40 there. Meanwhile they have lost refining capacity so badly it is sad.
NIger is poorer than we are, they have a refinery, they have domestic crude production, and fuel there costs 1000 naira per liter or more. NO subsidy. DItto Ghana. Two working refineries self in Ghana. What's your point?? |
Politics › Re: Should Nigeria Try To Discourage Importation? by EmekaA125(m): 4:21am On Feb 05, 2024 |
RenaissanceGuy: There's almost nothing you can imagine today that China is not producing. In fact, you can go to China, meet a manufacturer and give him idea of a product that is currently not existing and ask them to manufacture them for you and it'd be done. We can be the China of Africa, but ordinary agriculture, we have not been able to get right. Let's start with rice and wheat cultivation first, where we can supply the whole of Africa, instead of African countries importing from Russia, Ukraine and India. You can't export when you don't have enough to export. No country can shut down importation in a bid to promote exportation. It's not a good economic policy. |
Politics › Re: Should Nigeria Try To Discourage Importation? by EmekaA125(m): 4:19am On Feb 05, 2024 |
Paraman: Buhari tried to discourage importation, it didn't end well. It's one of the reason we are where we are now Importation on low import tariff would benefit the country more because some of the products being imported are gotten at a very reduced rate. Discouraging importation is very harmful to the economy. |

santaclaws: LOL I remember the famous response from Jagaban, but he had a valid point. Before herdsmen started kidnapping, it was a vibrant business in the south-south, oil workers were majorly the target back then.
Till this very day, you have lots of Igbos, Niger deltans who are into kidnapping. One chance operators are majorly from the 2 aforementioned tribes, so everyone must be treated as a suspect, not that once you hear about kidnapping, you say they're herdsmen, that's a security flaw that would allow the real kidnappers escape without suspicion.. Fulanis are peaceful cattle herders. They have never killed or kidnapped anyone before. |

ProudNigerian01: Honestly, this is getting too much. They are even boldly operating in the Nation's capital.
We all must join hands with the government to put an end to this menace. This is not the time to talk politics. Kidnappers don't know members of APC, PDP or LP.
Report anything suspicious. These kidnappers are around us getting info and spending their ill gotten wealth.
Report!
Meanwhile,
Jesus is still waiting for you to turn to Him and turn away from sin and sinful desires. Read your Bible today to know God more and He will keep shame away from you:
Isa.54.4 - "Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; For you will forget the shame of your youth, And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore. You are talking rubbish by saying this is not the time of talking politics whereas what's happening is hinged to political choices people made during elections. As long as APC continues to get votes across all regions in Nigeria, hardship, killings, kidnapping and pains will never stop. This is just the obvious truth. |

apalasedo: Lol
APC will eventually ruin this country kpatakpata. These results are well scripted, mere observation would show the kindergarten markings by the enemies of the people. The devil wearing round glasses in power.
Satan lives in Nigeria. They will do anything to suck this country dry and turn the people to their slaves. Reminds me of the cartoon "Rango", "they take our WELL and we'll beg them to take our rights for a cup of water"
I can see Tinubu for what he truly is. An enemy of the people. All these extremes he takes just to be more powerful would turn out to be his final doom. I pray to see that day come sooner...
Inec Chairman to Gandollar; "Let's add Small PDP winnings and YPP so that it doesn't look like we are writing the results from here..."

aswani: Good evening fellow Nairalanders,
Firstly I urge you to remove your hats or wigs wherever you are and join me for a moments silence for the party formerly known as Peter Obi's EluuPee.
Thank you to my fellow Nigerians that voted in these by-elections, you proved one thing by ensuring no Labour Party member won today despite the diverse locations elections were held, you proved that bullying and on line agberoism, as practised by Obidients, was not something you were willing to tolerate. I salute your indefatigability.
Never again should a group of people attempt to subvert our electoral process and railroad our hard fought democracy because of their unhealthy fanatism to one, as it happens very flawed as evidenced by insults and abuse he received during his tenure as Governor, human being. Na hunger go finish you up soon. Continue talking rubbish unless you don jakpa or you dey plan jakpa. |
