We all want the best for our little ones and try our hardest to protect them. There are so many different baby products out there all vying for our attention, but not all of them can be safe for your little one. In fact, it turns out that even baby food and formula may not be safe, an alarming study released this week found that many baby food products tested positive for arsenic, including 80% of infant formulas. The test was done by a nonprofit called The Clean Label Project which advocates for transparent labeling. For the study, they tested baby food, infant formulas, toddler drinks and snacks that were all purchased within the last 5 months. According to their research, out of the 530 baby food products that were tested, it was found that 65% of them tested positive for arsenic, 36% for lead, 58% for cadmium and 10% for acrylamide. This is very scary news because all of these chemicals pose potential dangers to developing babies. The brands that were the greatest offenders included Gerber, Enfamil, Plum Organics, and Sprout. These brands scored two out of five in the Clean Label Project’s report card for toxic metals. Also, 60% of the products they tested that claimed to be “BPA free” actually tested positive for the industrial chemical bisphenol. The number of the contaminants in each product range, but some of the products tested positive for up to 600 parts of arsenic per billion, which is far more than just trace amounts. Almost 80% of infant formula samples taken ended up testing positive for arsenic. Arsenic has been associated with a variety of medical issues including developmental defects, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity, diabetes and has even been linked to cancer. “The baby industry needs to do a better job in protecting America’s most vulnerable population,” Jaclyn Bowen, the Executive Director of Clean Label Project, said. So, what is the FDA going to do about it? Peter Cassell, an FDA spokesperson, said: “It is important for consumers to understand that some contaminants, such as heavy metals like lead or arsenic, are in the environment and cannot simply be removed from food.” Back in 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed that they would set a limit of 100 parts per billion of arsenic in infant rice cereal, but they haven’t been enforcing that limit. In fact, rice often absorbs arsenic from the contaminated soil as it grows. [Source/USA Today] |

@Kelizosuy, when my baby had catarrh at around 10 days old, my brother in-laws wife was the one bathing her at the time, all she did was massage the head and face with the wash cloth and poured hot water on lo's head (pls don't try it o, I almost drowned my baby when I tried it). The catarrh flowed out on its own after which we rubbed Shea butter in the nostril using cotton bud |
