The Nigerian Army has denied media reports that 25 soldiers were killed in an attack coordinated by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno. The Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, made the denial in a Short Message (SMS) sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Sunday. Some reports claimed 25 soldiers were killed on Saturday when the insurgents attacked a military convoy evacuating civilians on Damboa-Biu Road. Musa dismissed the report as “rumour and fake”. “Contrary to rumour and fake news circulating, there was no attack on any of our troops’ locations at Sabon Gari or any other locations in Borno State. “I have spoken with the Special Force Commander in Damboa and he confirmed to me that there was nothing of such in Damboa or any of his locations as at Friday) and Saturday,” he said. Some traders affected by the ongoing demolition of Agboju Market in Festac Town, Lagos, have blamed market leaders for “insincerity” over the exercise. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that bulldozers moved in on Friday and began pulling down the structures in the market just as the traders started displaying their goods for sale. Some of the affected traders told NAN that the issue of the demolition had been ongoing between the state government and the traders. They, however, expressed shock over the exercise which occurred before the seven-day quit notice issued them expired. Mr Uzo Thomas, trader, said they assumed the demolition would be done on Monday after the notice elapsed on Sunday. “To our surprise, Friday morning, we were displaying our goods, we just started hearing, ‘pack, pack,’ we thought it was a joke. “Before we knew it, bulldozers started bringing everything down,” he said. Also, Mrs Anulika Chukwu, trader, said last Thursday, officials of Amuwo Odofin Local Government came to warn the traders not to sell on the walk ways, which they complied with. “If we had known beforehand, I wouldn’t have spent the money I had yesterday buying goods for sale,” she lamented. However, some other traders said that the land where the market was situated was a buffer zone, with pipelines running underneath and electric cables overhead. Mr Olawale Ashakaba, trader, said: “This is a Federal Government property, there are pipelines running under here. “I believe there’s something our leaders are not telling us,” he said. Another trader, Mrs Blessing Ogomchi, said: “Nobody knows exactly what is going on or what is going to happen. “The leaders haven’t even called a meeting to tell traders what is going on. “If indeed there’s going to be a new market, how long will it take to be completed; how many months or years?” The Iyaloja General of Amuwo Market, Mrs Osinatu Adebayo, refuted the allegations, saying there was no foul play. “No. No, it’s not true. “The problem is that the market is too rough and the state government called us to say they want to rebuild it to a modern market. “They would have finished building it but we’ve been delaying and begging for more time, ‘please allow us to sell for Christmas’ or ‘please let us sell for Easter’. According to her, buying and selling will continue as usual, once the site has been cleared. Adebayo pledged her commitment to the traders, in ensuring that they all get shops when the new market is completed. “My children are also traders here, so I can’t allow things get spoiled. “Before outsiders get shops, all the traders will be considered first,” she said. Another official, who spoke under anonymity, said he wasn’t sure how long it would take to complete the project. He, however, urged the traders not to kick against modernisation of the market. All efforts by NAN correspondent to reach Amuwo Odofin Local Government Chairman, Mr Valentine Buraimoh, proved abortive as his aide who picked his calls said he was attending a state function https://www.nan.ng/news/traders-weep-over-demolition-of-festac-town-market/

The Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, said it was untrue that Federal Executive Council (FEC) was divided over mode of implementation of the National Carrier project. He spoke at the backdrop of comments purportedly made by the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, on the issue. In a statement by Mr James Odaudu, Deputy Director, Press and Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation, on Friday, Sirika said that Amaechi may have been misquoted by a section of the media. He said that FEC had always been one cohesive body that could not be divided over any issue. According to Sirika, the Nigeria Air project has the full support of Council which deliberated on it and approved. “Consequently, President Muhammadu Buhari directed that the Viability Gap Funding for the project be provided for in the 2019 Appropriation which the National Assembly had graciously done. “I assure the general public, and more importantly, the prospective partners and investors, that Nigeria Air project is fully alive and on course,” he said. https://www.nan.ng/news/ministers-not-divided-over-national-carrier-sirika/ |

Supreme Court on Friday nullified All Progressives Congress (APC), participation in 2019 elections and declares party with second highest votes as winner in Zamfara. The Apex court heard two election appeals seeking to ascertain authentic candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), candidates in Zamfara in the last general elections. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the APC and Malam Sanusi Dan-Alhaji had instituted the case on the primary election conducted by the party for the nomination of candidates to participate in the last general election. Chief Lateef Fagbemi,SAN, Counsel for Dan-Alhaji, while adopting his address, prayed the apex court to restore the Feb.13 judgment of the Zamfara High Court which allowed APC to field candidates in the general election. Fagbemi submitted that the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division, which disqualified APC from nominating candidate for the election on the grounds that the party did not conduct lawful primary should be set aside. He further argued that the lower court erred in law, adding that the decision was a miscarriage of justice. Fagbemi said the APC had shown proof the party conducted a free and fair primary to elect the candidates that contested the governorship election, the National Assembly and the House of Assembly elections respectively. However, Chief Mike Ozekhome,SAN, Counsel for Sen. Kabiru Marafa and 142, all of the APC urged the appellate court to dismiss the appeal and affirm the judgment of the Appeal Court. Ozekhome submitted that the judgment was a copious description of how the APC in Zamfara failed to conduct primary election in accordance with the Electoral Act, party guideline and the 1999 Constitution. He said the process failed both legal and integrity tests, adding that the exercise was not conducted to produce candidates for the last general election as his clients were fenced out. Mr Tanimu Inuwa,SAN, Counsel for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) aligned himself with the argument canvassed by Ozekhome. He further explained that the electoral body did not supervised any primary conducted by the party as mandated by law. Inuwa argued that the Court of Appeal in Sokoto was right to have stopped the APC from fielding candidates in the 2019 general election in Zamfara. Inuwa therefore, urged the appellate court to dismiss the appeal for lacking in merit. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm on alleged plans by “unscrupulous and anti-democratic elements to contrive skirmishes in the coming weeks aimed at smearing his personality”. Abubakar also demanded that the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed tender an apology to him and the PDP. Abubakar raised the alarm in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Mr Paul Ibe, on Friday in Abuja. Abubakar who was Vice President from 1999 to 2007, said that it was being revealed the grand plot orchestrated by some agents of evil to stage-manage pockets of upset targeted at attacking his reputation. “We wish to blow the whistle as an early warning alert of the grandiose scheme being put together by some unscrupulous elements aimed at jeopardizing the reputation of Abubakar in the coming days and weeks. “By the merit of what is beginning to unfold, there are plans to create some upset across the country, whereby alleged perpetrators of such crimes will engage in phantom names dropping of Abubakar and some senior personalities in the PDP.’’ Ibe said that they were abreast of some other plans to plant fictitious stories in some mushroom media outlets aimed at discrediting Atiku and his political party, the PDP. “It, therefore, becomes preponderant that we alert the public of this demonic plan and to say that it will be imprudent to compromise the peace and security of Nigerians in order to score a cheap political goal.” Abubakar, however, called on the Federal Government to be awake to its responsibilities of providing security and ensuring peace, and to desist from actions and utterances capable of exposing “our fault lines.” He said that it was unsettling that senior administration officials, would make calculated comments to tarnish the image of Abubakar and with no action from the government. https://www.nan.ng/news/atiku-raises-alarm-over-smear-campaign/
