osifred:Please get this right.Nobody is saying that University education is not good.University degree does not guarantee you exposure. There are so many university graduates today that are not exposed.I know a handful of them.In fact, most are dumb and don't even know their left from their right. The Nigerian university system is pretty messed up.Lots of theories without practicals. Most lecturers use the same lesson notes for over 10 years. No improvement to suit changing times. In the first place,it is the practicals that brought about the theories we learn today. All the inventors that we study their laws in sciences like Newton first of all practicalize those scientific laws before they write them down and that's what we have been learning for ages. You cited Zuckerberg and Gates as examples but you forgot that it was not really the university that made them exposed. They were personally educated and they were determined to succeed. Assuming they had gone the normal way of way of completing their degrees, they wouldn't be where they are today. Enough said. |
javalove:My brother,God bless you for this wonderful comment. Same thing with me.When I finished secondary school at the age of 17,instead of going to the University,I opted for business. My mum had exposed me early on in life to know certain things which my mates never knew.I didn't even waste my time taking JAMB.I guess I followed the Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad principle Now,that I'm 22,just registered my own international commodity marketing company with branches in US,Nigeria,Ghana and Togo.it's still expanding. While doing this,I am combining it with online degree programs in two universities.IT-Software Engineering (University of Phoenix) and Business Admin in International Business (University of London-Royal Holloway) Both are online based and it is very convenient for me to combine it with managing my business. In 3 years time,I will have my degree from both universities. The reason why I am trying to get these degrees is simply because of my mum not because I need them. She was like saying that her friends were like looking down on her that her son is not a graduate like most of his mates are. Another reason is that people tend to look down on you if you don't have a degree. Back then when I took this decision, most of my friends were mocking me but I didn't mind because I was convinced I was doing the right thing.Today, although most of them are degree holders and have finished their NYSC,they are still searching for jobs and still depending on their parents. Some even ask if they could join me or I employ them. Most are regretting why they even went to the university and they were even forced to do courses they never wanted to do in the first place. By God's grace,by the time I am 25,I will have two B.Sc degrees,a well-established company and so many other things in addition to being my own boss and not having to answer 'sir' to anyone.Coming to even think of it,it is not late to have a degree by 25 although most of my friends would claim they got a degree before me but it doesn't matter. I am not saying that getting a degree is bad but gone are those days when students are told to go to school, study hard, make good grades, graduate and start job hunting. It is sad that it's still the norm in Nigeria now.People need to wake up and know that times have changed. I used to think academic intelligence and success was everything that was needed to be successful in life but I soon discovered I was wrong.I used to come top of my class back then in secondary school and everyone was surprised when I opted not to go into a university but I was too focused to even pay attention to what they were saying about me.In WAEC,I was the best student in my secondary school with 4 A1,3 B2 and 2 B3. Tongues were wagging then but today they are all dumbfounded because they now know I made the right choice then. When I sit back today and reflect,I thank God that I did not take the normal path of going to university after secondary school. For God's sake, education is just a means to an end. It's not an end in itself. It is the successful real life application of what we learn in school that determines success. But,it is not the case in Nigeria today as many people are misemployed.Imagine a civil engineer or a microbiologist working in a bank. That's the kind of thing you find in Nigeria. How about we start telling the students to graduate and see ways they can create jobs instead of hunting for jobs.We blame the government for everything and rush to America and Europe for jobs created by people who think outside the box.We forget that most jobs in the West are not government jobs. But,here in Nigeria we criticize the government for not creating enough jobs. Imagine if a graduate instead of doing the normal job hunting, comes up with an initiative and he/she ends up employing 4 four people. That's about 4 people off the streets and able to cater for their families. Most of our graduates are not creative enough, period. A Lebanese once told me that it is only in Nigeria that you will see money on the streets and young graduates are going about carrying portfolios looking for jobs.Check out the Lebanese, they come here in rags and go in riches. They don't even have the type of opportunity they have in Nigeria in their own country. They are successful because they are creative enough to discover opportunities and they even end up employing our so-called graduates and pay them peanuts. Enough said, our mentality needs to change. |
God bless Rochas for this.Giving hope to the hopeless. |
Your story is very touching.Drop me a line.My email address is nanichient@gmail.com I may be able to help out with something. I will be expecting your email. Thanks |
Commentary: Ten Questions Senators Should Ask Deziani Allison-Madueke Recently, the media has championed calls and provided evidence why the grumpy former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke should not be returned to the cabinet, let alone to the Oil ministry portfolio. We thought media had made the point loud enough to invite President Goodluck Jonathan to take a hard and unsentimental look at Allison-Madueke’s record as Oil Minister. On each occasion, we promised ourselves that I won't write any more on the woman. But, like a bad headache, Allison-Madueke has refused to go away. Against all the odds, she made the final list and it is now left to the Senate to save Nigerians from what has become a national embarrassment; the President having failed in his duty. The President’s decision to return Allison-Madueke to the cabinet, unpopular as it is, points to a failure of leadership arising from poor judgment. We are therefore demanding that the Senators add the following questions to their list of questions for Allison-Madueke when she comes up for screening: 1-Lawmakers should ask Allison-Madueke about the so-called “Strategic Alliance Agreements” signed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Corporation (NPDC) and Septa Energy Nigeria Ltd discreetly assigning oil blocks without an open and competitive bidding process in violation of the 2007 Public Procurement Act and the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act 2010. A Lagos-based lawyer, Bartholomew Aguegbodo, on June 10, 2011, asked a Federal High Court in Lagos to declare these agreements as illegal, null and void. He joined Allison-Madueke, the NNPC and the NPDC, Septa Energy, and the Attorney General of the Federation as first to fifth respondents respectively. 2-Allison-Madueke should tell lawmakers why she thinks her refusal to sign up for mandatory national service with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after she graduated from Howard University in 1987 should not be seriously reprimanded. According to Section 13 of the NYSC decree, Allison-Madueke committed a criminal act. “(A person) who refuses to make himself available for service in the service corps continuously for the period specified in subsection (2) of this section, is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine of N2,OOO or to imprisonment for a term of 12 months or to both,” the Act states. 3-Lawmakers should also ask Allison-Madueke whether she has reimbursed the $2 million she spent on a fashion show, organized by diamond designer Chris Aire, to promote his brand in the United States. The high profile event, tagged: “Chris Aire - ‘Hollywood Glamour Collection’2010 Nigeria’s Pride- Gold and Gemstones was packaged as a kind of fair to create awareness for the untapped gold and gemstone resources in Nigeria. CBN boss Lamido Sanusi coaxed four Nigerian banks --Diamond, First, Guaranty Trust and First City Monument Bank to cough out the dough. The lavish event held on April 07, 2010 at the prestigious Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California. 4-Allison-Madueke should tell lawmakers why she violated the law by awarding licenses to lift Nigerian crude oil to “briefcase companies” including two companies incorporated by Chris Aire. On July 9, 2010, Mr. Aire incorporated Siseno Oil Nigeria Ltd, and 12 days later (July 21, 2010), Mr. Aire, through his agents, incorporated another firm, Caligeria Oil Ltd, for the purpose of conducting petroleum products sales and distribution. One month later, Allison-Madueke discretionally awarded crude oil lifting contracts to the two firms, with neither fixed addresses nor personnel, in violation of NNPC guidelines for lifting of Nigerian crude. With the arbitrary allocations to his no-address companies, Mr. Aire and his associates earned about $11 million a year in profit for doing virtually nothing. The Presidency plans an investigation after major stakeholders protested against the overwhelming presence of shadowy companies without requisite industry experience and stipulated financial power, and who have failed to fulfil stipulated corporate responsibilities to the host communities, in violation of the guidelines signed by Allison-Madueke herself. 5-Lawmakers should ask Allison-Madueke about the elaborate bribery scam at the Petroleum Product Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), where oil marketers were compelled to pay bribes in US dollars in exchange for obtaining authorization to import gasoline. The oil marketers were instructed by PPPRA to call a mobile telephone number and pay a bribe of $8 per metric ton of petroleum allocated to them, such that a firm with a 100,000 metric tons allocation would be required to pay a bribe of $800,000 in cash. 6-Allison-Madueke should be asked to explain why despite all her much-vaunted “reforms” to engender transparency in the sector, the 2011 report by the anti-corruption watch group Transparency International titled: “Promoting Revenue Transparency”, the NNPC is one of the eight worst performing companies worldwide, scoring zero for poor organizational disclosure. 7-Senators should seize the occasion to get Allison-Madueke answer questions relating to their inconclusive investigation by the Senate Committee on Petroleum (upstream) into three (3) oil blocks – OML 4, 30 and 41, which she discreetly and illegally assigned exploration rights to Septa Energy Nigeria Ltd. The federal government maintained a 55% stake in the blocks representing billions of naira. The Senate committee was unable to conclude its investigations because Allison-Madueke arrogantly refused to appear before the committee to answer questions even though she was invited several times. She can run, but she can no longer hide. 8-Lawmakers should also ask Allison-Madueke the inauspicious circumstances that led to her violating a court order to protect the interests of her husband’s company, and why she thinks this blatant conflict of interest should not be seriously reprimanded. She muzzled the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) into not complying with the court-directive to put a lien on all financial operations of Eremor Offshore oil field operated by Excel, chaired by her husband Retired Rear Admiral Allison Madueke. Excel had failed to honor an agreement with Alphin Fleury and Partners, a private company in Switzerland hired by the London office of the NNPC to seek financing for several Nigerian companies that are operating marginal oil fields. Excel breached the contract and when the court ordered a lien to be place on their assets, Allison-Madueke used her position as Minister to contravene and discard the court order. 9-Allison-Madueke should be asked to explain her uppity nature and disdain for the rule of law, which has led to arbitrariness and chaos in the sector. She should explain her decision ordering the NNPC to exercise its right of first refusal to prevent companies that bought oil acreages from RoyalDutchShell disinvestment sell-off of its blocks from operating the blocks. This has triggered a planned massive disinvestment by the oil majors from the Nigerian oil sector 10-Finally, lawmakers should ask Allison-Madueke this simple question: throughout her tenure as Minister, especially as Oil Minister, what mistakes have she made; what lessons have she learnt from those mistakes and if given another opportunity to head the Oil Ministry, what are some of the things she would do differently? It is beyond human comprehension that President Jonathan can still appoint Allison-Madueke to his cabinet. What professional or ideological imperatives besides Ijaw solidarity that informed the President’s decision stretches credulity. What her re-appointment demonstrates is a predilection towards profligacy, and a questionable emphasis on reward rather than service: I consider the outrageous decision to return Allison-Madueke rather scandalous. The basic principle here is that public service ought to be about sacrifice and dedication. Those who have been elected or appointed to serve Nigeria in one capacity or the other should see their elevation as a mark of honor and as an opportunity to contribute to the making of Nigeria, its progress and development. Allison-Madueke is just unfit to hold public office and the Senate should reject her nomination outright! April 9th is the day that we will say "12 years is enough" to PDP.In the past 12 years, what has PDP achieved compared to the amount of money this country generated over these years? Nothing to show for it except insecurity, poor standard of living, shambolic infrastructure, etc. For example, the Benin-Ore road has been in bad shape since 1999.How long is it gonna take to fix it? Instead they keep awarding the contracts on the pages of newspaper while there is nothing on ground to show for it.Do you know the number of people that have died using that road since 1999. Our refineries are not working yet they claim to have spent billions of dollars on the so-called turn around maintenance (TAM) of the refineries. We keep importing refined petroleum products enriching and lining the pockets of the cabal who are the importers of these products. A vote for GEJ is a vote for OBJ,Anenih and the likes.April 9th is the day that we all will rescue this country from the present mess and rot.If GEJ can convince me and prove that he's not a puppet,I will vote for him. But,the truth is,he can't do without the cabal.I agree Late President Yar'Adua was not fully fit but it was when he started going against the wishes of the cabal that his health started deteriorating.Your guess is as good as mine what they must have done to remove from there. A vote for BB is a vote for a corruption free Nigeria. The time to improve our international image is now.My green Nigerian passport must start to command respect in foreign airports unlike what's obtainable now. Vote BB 2011 |
Hello NL members, One of my friends is writing a project in Government and needs assistance on the following questions: 1. Explain the London Constitutional Conference of 1952 2. Explain the major agreements of the conference. Please anyone that can help out should please post the answer on this forum. Thanks |
My company has a valid contract to supply a Vietnamese company with 500 metric tons of raw cashew nuts per month starting from February,2011.Below are the terms of the contract: Payment by 98% confirmed irrevocable LC at sight and 2% after inspection at buyer's port. Price is US$670 per MT C&F Ho Chi Minh City Port. Shipment must be done by middle of February,2011 At the price of US$670/MT,the exporter stands to make not less than $130 per MT and it is a monthly supply contract. The season of cashew nuts just started this January and Nigeria produces about 60,000MT of cashew nuts per annum. The current price in the local market is not more than N70,000 per ton which is $466 at the exchange rate of N150 per $1. Then, the cost of freight using Zim Line is $556 per 20ft container which will contain about 17MT of cashew nuts. So,the cost of freight per ton is approximately $33. The cost of transport to Apapa Wharf is N130,000 per truck which will carry two 20ft containers each. The cost of transport per ton will be N3825 which is $25.5. Total cost of export: Cost of cashew nuts per ton = US$466 Cost of freight per ton = US$33 Cost of transportation per ton = US25.5 Cost of documentation/miscellaneous per ton = $10 Total = 466+33+25.5+10 = US$534.5/MT Total cost of export for the 500MT = US$534.5 X 500 = US$267,250 or N40,087,500.00 Note: The price of the nuts per ton could be lower than N70,000 because this the beginning of the season and prices are generally lower now and rises from March when the nuts will begin to go out of season. So,the expected profit per ton = US$670-US$534.5 = US$135.5 Total profit = US$135.5 X 500 = US$67,750 or N10,162,500.00 This is per month till the nuts go out of season finally by July.Once the exporter is able to satisfy the buyer, the contract will start off again next year.It goes on like that in cycles. The buyer is a Vietnamese cashew processing factory that can process not less than 1000MT per month. The reason why I want to sell this contract is that my company does not have the funds to run it right now and the buyers are ready to place their LC latest next week. I will provide the needed support to make sure it is successfully executed. Anybody who is interested should contact me via nanichient@gmail.com or call 07095157185 Please only serious and financially capable persons should contact me. |
