Education / FG, ASUU Reach Agreement Over Strike by emmanuell23(m): 8:59am On Dec 12, 2013
The Federal Government and the Academic
Staff Union of Universities have reached an
agreement to end the over five month old
strike by ASUU. The lecturer’s association
has however said that its members may return
to work next week.
The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr.
Nyesom Wike told journalists at a meeting with
the leadership of ASUU, President of the Nigeria
Labour Congress, Executive Secretary of the
Nigerian Universities Commission and five vice-
chancellors of universities that all contending
issues between the parties have been resolved.
The parties signed a document to seal the
agreement which spells great hope that the over
five-month old strike may be called off within one
week, although the president of ASUU, Professor
Nasir Faggae declined to say what was contained
in the document.
ASUU’s demands include the upward review of
the retirement age for professors from 65 to 70;
adequate funding to revitalise the university
system; progressive increase of budgetary
allocations to the education sector by 26 per cent;
transfer of federal government property to
universities; setting up of research and
development units by companies; payment of
earned allowances; and renegotiation of the signed
agreement.
The agreement between the two is reached barely
24 hours after the Special Assistant on Public
Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe presented a proof of
payment of N200 billion into an account with the
Central Bank of Nigeria.
The strike began on July 1st 2013 and lasted for
over five months before this resolution was
reached.

Education / ASUU Strike Update: The Votings by emmanuell23(m): 9:52pm On Nov 11, 2013
FUT Minna backs strike
suspension.

The congress of the Union
at the Federal University
of Technology (FUT), Minna
was divided Monday with
majority of members in
support of suspension of
the four month old action,
while others would want
it suspended with some
conditions met by
government.
The minority demanded
that in calling off the
action, the leadership of
the union should insist
that no member is
victimised for their role in
the strike. They also
insisted that government
should indicate in the final
agreement as agreed with
the President that the
2009 was due for
negotiation as well as the
payment of the balance of
their academic earned
allowances.
No sooner the chapter
chairman, Dr. Fatai Jimoh
briefed the congress of the
outcome of the meeting
between President
Goodluck Jonathan and
the leadership of the
union that the house was
divided with majority of
the members pushing for
suspension of the strike.
The few dissenting voice
argued that the union
should not fall prey to
federal government ploy.
They cautioned that the
union cannot take
government for its word,
maintaining that if the
union had to embark on a
strike after series of
correspondences and
strike in 2011 that led to
the signing of
Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) in
2012 were not honoured.
But majority of the
university teachers said
that the plight of the
students and their parents
should be considered.
After exhaustive debate,
the congress resolved and
directed its chairman to
convey to the national
executive council meeting
holding tomorrow in Kano
that the union can
consider suspending the
action but insisted that
the three other conditions
be met.
When contacted, the
chapter chairman, Dr. Fatai
Jimoh initially refused to
divulged the outcome of
the congress but later
confirmed that majority of
his congress members
pushed for suspension.
“I have the mandate to
take the decision of the
congress to NEC holding
day after tomorrow. But if
you insist to know,
majority of our members
called for the suspension
of the strike but with the
government fulfilling
three conditions.
“Don’t ask me the
conditions, because we
don’t want it public
domain. All I can tell you is
that the strike is still on
until the NEC of the union
decide otherwise,” Jimoh
stated.
The chapter chairman also
refused to assess the
impact of the action.
According th him, “As long
as NEC has not suspended
the action, it will be
premature to assess the
success or otherwise of
the action. When the
strike is called off, I’ll give
my candid assessment”.
At Ibrahim Badamasi
Babangida University,
Lapai efforts to get the
outcome of the congress
failed as the Chairman was
out of reach but the
congress on Friday during
a community walk to
sensitised members of the
public resolved to abide
by the decision of the NEC
of the Union.
Speaking after the walk,
the chapter chairman,
Comrade Yahaya Badeggi
said, “the congress at IBBU
Lapai, resolved that the
strike continues until
when the National
Executive Council of the
union decides otherwise.
We know they are still
negotiating, we shall
abide by the decision of
NEC”.
On the gains of the four
month old action, Badeggi
said, “I make bold to say
that the action has
produced some positive
results. From the N100
billion released our
university got N450
million. This would not
have been so but for the
strike. I believe that at the
end of the university
system will be better for
it”. -THE NATION NEWS

“Don’t Name Boko Haram As Terrorist Group,” Jonathan Begs US

11.08.2012, 15:53 Local

There were indications from the last Thursday's visit of the US Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton to Nigeria that President Goodluck Jonathan appealed to the United State government not to include the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, into its Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) or International Terrorist Organization (ITO) lists.

It was gathered that the Federal Government got a positive commitment from the US Secretary of State, on the issue.

Besides, it will be recalled that at the meeting, Boko Haram and the threat top the agenda.

In the meeting, US government agreed to offer intelligence support and strengthen Nigeria's capacity to check the menace of the sect.

"Daily Post" authoritatively gathered that the Federal Government pleaded with the US Secretary of State and members of her delegation to shelve the designation plan.

According to a source: "In making a case against the designation of Boko Haram as a terrorist group, the Federal Government took into consideration the fact that it will look like a sanction which will hurt innocent Nigerians.

"Some people think that the designation will only hurt Boko Haram members without knowing that all of us will bear the brunt.

"We realized that it might scare away investors from Nigeria and lead to visa restriction and subjection of Nigerians to maltreatment at airports all over the world, including frisking of their bodies and other harsh measures.

"And once the US does that, the EU countries will follow. The consequence of the designation is that this country will return to the club of pariah nations. This will surely in turn hurt our economy.

"So, the government pleaded with the US Secretary of State and other top officials against designation.

"We also succeeded in explaining in details what we have been doing to check insurgency in some parts of the country. As a matter of fact, the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, was at the session to brief the US delegation.

"The Federal Government delegation was optimistic that with steps taken so far and its readiness for dialogue, the Boko Haram menace can be tackled.

"We were able to convince the delegation that it will be counter-productive to designate Boko Haram as a terrorist group since the US considers Nigeria as its'strategic partner' in the sub-region.

"The US Secretary of State and others were positive in their response. They agreed with us that there is no need yet to take a drastic designation action against Boko Haram.

"So, we are positive that they will shelve the plan and cooperate with us to strengthen our capacity to address our security challenges.

"One of the key areas they are looking at is about how to assist us in intelligence gathering and empower our security agencies (in terms of training and exposure) to address the Boko Haram insurgency."

But, when contacted last night, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, only spoke about the gains of the bilateral session with the US Secretary of State without any reference to security matters.

He said:"For about two hours, we were all engrossed with how to improve ties between the two countries. The US promised to support us and back our reforms.

"We decided to explore more cooperation on agriculture, power and petroleum resources. Clinton explained that some American companies are interested in agriculture and gas turbines in Nigeria .

"We are expecting more investors from the US in these key areas of the economy. It was a major foreign policy breakthrough for us as a nation."
