The Ayuba Wabba-led faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to ground flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos from Thursday, if the Federal Government refuses to revert the pump price of petrol to N87 per litre. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Adelegan Solomon, Vice-President, NLC, made this known while addressing protesters at the MMIA over the government’s removal of fuel subsidy. Solomon, who is also the President of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUCPTRE), urged Nigerians to unanimously reject the hike in fuel price. According to him, the N145 per litre announced by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) will further increase the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. He noted that Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) were members of AUCPTRE, adding that arrangements have been perfected to ground flight operations at the airport from Thursday. “Today, few planes have taken-off and landed on this airport but by tomorrow, no plane will land or take off. It is operation occupy Lagos State,’’ Solomon said. Also speaking, the President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge, said Nigerians must remain united against the ruling class. “We are convinced that what is going on now is a war of liberation. We in ASUU believe that any change that does not lead to transformation is underdevelopment,’’ Fagge said. NAN reports that flight operations were hitch-free on Wednesday at both the international and domestic wings of the airport, despite an early morning protest by the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE). Employees of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), also resumed at their offices, as directed by the government. Mrs Victoria Menta, Commissioner of Police, Lagos Airport Police Command, who deployed officers around strategic locations at the airport, later met with the union members and enjoined them to be peaceful. However, some travellers were left stranded for several hours, due to the traffic caused by the protesters. https://www.naij.com/834220-nlc-shutdown-murtala-muhammed-international-airport-mmia.html |

The removal of subsidies from petroleum products in Nigeria by the federal government on Wednesday, May 11 has been generating mixed reactions across Nigeria. While many are opposed to the decision by the government, many others are in support of the decision, saying it is the way to go. Since the announcement of the policy by the Muhammadu Buhari administration, there have been arguments and counter arguments by various organisations on the advantages or disadvantages of the policy. President Buhari has a duty to ensure the fuel subsidy removal is to beneficial to Nigeria and Nigerians Read the recommendations below: 1. Set up a task force to monitor possible forex manipulation. The team should focus attention on every stage forex transaction zeroing on the beneficiaries. The team should also be able to monitor transaction dealers directly from pre-shipment to post shipment. 2. The NNPC should intensify supply in the short-run so that the cabal will not be given room to frustrate the policy. It is our belief that prices will recede after the initial panic. We have seen that happened in the diesel market. 3. Government should monitor every dollar that comes in or go out of Nigeria. 4. The CBN, either officially of unofficially, should increase the sale of dollars to petroleum product importers at an exchange rate that is not above N300/$. We believe marketers can still make profit at this rate. 5. Government should use state apparatus to stop the resurgence of insurgence in the Niger Delta to stabilise oil production 6. Government should not hesitate to seek help, locally and internationally, to curtail the fall of the naira, which we believe is being manipulated by round trippers who will soon be out of business. 7. Government should promote policies that could boost local production capacity and diversify sources of foreign earnings. 8. Government should not give in to distraction as this is a major weapon in the hands of those that are determined to frustrate this administration and prevent it from succeeding. |
The nationwide strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has proved to be ineffective in Kano state on Wednesday as workers defied the strike by reporting to their respective offices, Daily Trust observed. Our reporter, who went round the state metropolis, also observed that markets, universities, banks, shopping malls and other public places did not comply with the NLC strike. At Audu Bako State Secretariat, where majority of state ministries are located, workers were seen conducting their usual office work in their respective offices. Aliyu Ahmed, a civil servant told Daily Trust that he reported to his duty post because a federal high court had ordered the labour unions to suspend the strike. He said: “Nobody told me to stay at home because of the strike. So, I assumed that the strike has been suspended and when I reported to my office, I saw many people working as usual. So, I have no reason whatsoever not to report to my place of work.” Also at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital both Doctors and other supportive staff also reported to their offices. Students at Bayero University Kano (BUK) also attended classes as lecturers in the university defied the strike though the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) is supposed to be part of the strike. At the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), the strike did not make any impact as government officials reported to their various offices. It was further observed that both public and private schools operated in the state despite the strike.
