Ondo APC Primary: Akeredolu made good his threat to shock Tinubu – Abraham Dayo Johnson, Akure RATHER than abate, the crisis in the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State over the choice of its candidate ahead of the November 26 governorship election in the state has deepened two months to the poll. One of the key players and the first runner up in the election, Dr Olusegun Abraham, in this interview, bares his mind on the crisis and how alleged injustice and corruption came into play in the choice of the party’s candidate. You keep insisting that you want to retrieve your mandate. How is this still possible going by the reality on ground now? The mandate is the mandate of the good people of Ondo State, given to me by the delegates; so it is the mandate of these people that I want to claim. I have said it severally that we have some steps that we need to explore to restore this mandate and we have only explored one step and we are disappointed with the outcome, so we are moving to the two other steps in order to claim the mandate. Fortunately, the issue is now a public matter and the whole world has seen that injustice was committed by some people in the APC at the national level. This is a big mistake on the part of those who injected names of non- delegates and non-party members into our voting list. We want to know who injected those names, and on whose authority the names were injected? Are they superior to the congress of the party and the election panel? We want to know what the National Chairman of the party, John Oyegun, and other leaders around him have done if they are not the ones who put the names on the list illegally. Has he informed the EFCC to investigate the matter because this is a criminal offence? If President Buhari’s government truly represents change, and fighting corruption, this electoral fraud must be properly investigated and the culprits punished. Otherwise, I don’t think this government has any right or moral justification to arrest anybody for fraud . This is one of the reasons I said I’m not going to leave the party, we will be here in order to salvage the party. I support the Buhari government in fighting corruption and I’m sure this menace will be brought down to minimal level if not eradicated in our land and, therefore, if there are elements, either in government or party, trying to encourage corruption, this should be part of the things we must fight and correct. Are you not fantasizing about you supposed “stolen mandate”? How do you think this is possible after the party has submitted the name of Akeredolu as its candidate? I am not fantasizing. Those who did not support the candidature of Akeredolu are more than those who supported him. It is high time to fight this (alleged) corruption. That somebody single-handedly dropped his name at INEC against the decision of NWC, this is another illegality. I am surprised to still find Oyegun at the helm of affairs of the APC because, in a civilized society, this man ought to have resigned, he has no business being the Chairman anymore. The alleged fraud that was perpetrated in Ondo was said to have been perfected by the national body. A candidate that was not popular was picked above favorite aspirants in the election. I was sure of over 800 delegates before the election but they went ahead by disenfranchising my delegates by removing their names and replacing them with non-delegates. This is even a bigger offence than people stealing billions of Naira, stealing somebody mandate through fraudulent means and giving their votes to an unqualified aspirant. These are the issues we need to correct and one of the reasons we are in this mess today in Nigeria is because the PDP believed in rigging from the primary to the general elections, but we want to put a stop to this during Buhari’s administration, especially as Mr. President is known to be an honest man, a man of integrity who is determined to flush out corruption in this country. The NWC members seem to have shut the door against your aspiration by saying there is no going back on Akeredolu… The NWC are not the people of Ondo. Though they are the organs of the party, and the organs must listen to what the people are saying. This is not a military regime but a democratic administration; they must learn how to be democratic. In specific terms, are you asking EFCC to investigate this particular matter? Yes. I thought the perpetrators of the alleged fraud should have been arrested by now. I thought Oyegun and his group, if they knew nothing about the padded delegates list in Ondo, should fish out those behind the padding. It is an embarrassment to Buhari’s government and to a party that is known for fighting corruption and we now found out this fraud within the same party, this is a disgrace. Talking about you still having two options after exploring one, what are the two other options? The two options are still within the party machinery but I don’t want to pre-empt the results of these options. When we get to that stage, the whole world will know. On this vexed issue of fake delegates injected into the list, how are we sure that you are not even a beneficiary? He who pays the piper dictates the tune. Those who put them there had an arrangement with them because they had predetermined the result. They’ve been discovered. I am so confident that anytime there’s a rerun, I will win. That’s one of the reasons they are afraid to go back to the field. If these perpetrators had been arrested by EFCC, we would have known the truth. It was alleged that some people in the Presidency are behind the padding of the delegates list to favour a particular aspirant. What’s your take on this? We can’t rule it out but what I know is that Mr. President will not have a hand in that fraud. But I believe they cannot perpetrate this fraud without the connivance of some people at the party secretariat. That’s why they took our delegates list and injected it with their own delegates. I am even surprised that the legal adviser did not tell them the implication of what they have done? Do you see any nexus in the statement credited to Akeredolu before the election that the result of the election will shock Tinubu and the development thereafter? The result of the election confirmed this. God has a way of exposing some things ahead of time. Has he not shocked the whole world and not only Tinubu with the result? Are you in the face of the alleged injustice and corruption asking for the resignation of the NWC members? Well, that should be determined by the leaders of the party, but, for me and my people, my mandate should be returned. Again, those who perpetrated the alleged fraud by bringing in fake delegate list must be prosecuted so that it will serve as deterrent to others. If eventually the leadership of the party prevailed on you to let go, would you be ready to support Akeredolu? I will only ask them to prevail on the people of the state because what has taken place is a slap on the people of the state. So, I stand by them and I stand with them and prevailing on me is immaterial. Anyway I want the fraud in the Ondo APC primary investigated. Are you saying Akeredolu candidacy will not fly going by the manner of his emergence? Members of the party in the state have started dumping the party for PDP , that’s an indication that the candidate picked by the party is not popular and not acceptable to majority of the APC members in the state. Some people have joined the Action Alliance too, we don’t need crystal ball to know that, with him as the APC candidate, the party is finished in the state. If we are lucky in the governorship election in the state, we will be number five unless the party reverses its decision. An online petition Real Madrid should be stripped of their first five European Cup wins, according to an online petition that has amassed 50,000 votes. The petition on change.org claims the trophies Real Madrid won in the first five European Cup tournaments, between 1955-56 and 1959-60, were not in the same format as the modern Champions League. Real Madrid have won the European Cup and Champions League 10 times in total, and they have the chance to make it 11 when they face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28 in Milan. The petition, started by Spain-based user 'Justicia Deportiva', which translates as Sporting Justice, reads: "We wish to request, in the name of the values represented by the sport and by democracy, that Real Madrid's European Cup titles won between 1955-56 and 1959-60 are immediately revoked. "[This would be] in recognition of the fact that those trophies in no way correspond to the competition recognised today as the UEFA Champions League." Champions League organisers UEFA will be the recipient of the petition once it's complete. http://www.newseveryhour.com/2016/05/online-petitions-to-strip-real-madrid.html?m=1 |

– Fayose continues to express anger over removal of fuel subsidy – Wants organised labour to protest against policy – Federal lawmaker pleads for patience Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, southwestern Nigeria on Thursday called President Muhammadu Buhari a hypocrite. He also described the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as an advanced fee fraud practitioner for deceiving the country’s citizens till it removed subsidy from premium motor spirit, also known as petrol. Fayose, like many other Nigerians has remained angry since the Wednesday announcement by Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, the country’s minister of state for petroleum. The governor, seen as a major critic of the president, released a second statement stating that Buhari and his APC had defrauded Nigerians by increasing the price of petrol from N86.50 to N145 per litre. Ayodele-Fayose angry with Buhari over fuel subsidy removal. Urging Nigerians to resist the new policy, the governor added: “Those who opposed removal of fuel subsidy in 2012 and funded the Occupy Nigeria protest must not be allowed to get away with this imposition of hardship on Nigerians now that they are in power.” The governor urged labour unions, civil society organisations and other well-meaning Nigerians to stand up and be counted at this crucial time in the life of the common people of Nigeria. “There is no justification for the increment at this period when government is not paying salaries regularly, Nigerians are losing their jobs daily, prices of foodstuffs have gone over the roof and life has become so difficult for the common people,” Fayose added. Speaking through an aide, Lere Olayinka, the governor said: “In 2012 when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government of Dr Goodluck Jonathan removed fuel subsidy and increased petrol price to N141 per litre, crude oil was selling at $111 per barrel. How then can petrol price be increased to N145 per litre when crude oil is now selling at $40 per barrel? “It is on record that on May 2 this year, the federal government, through the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) template released in Abuja, told Nigerians that it was subsidising petrol at N12.62 per litre. “If as at May 2, petrol was being subsidised at N12.62 per litre, now that the subsidy of N12.62 has been removed, what ought to have been added to the N86.50 pump price should be N12.62, which would have increased pump price to N99.12 per litre. “Increasing petrol pump price by N58.50 when the federal government claimed it was subsidising the product at N12.62 per litre is clear political 419, which is aimed at further impoverishing Nigerians as the government will be making profit of N45.88 on each litre of petrol bought by Nigerians. “How can any government with human feelings attempt to make profit of N45.88 per litre on Nigerians, who are no longer getting their salaries regularly? How can Buhari and his party impose another N45.88 per litre levy on Nigerians who are already facing severe hardship? “Nigerians should be reminded that the president once said that petrol subsidy never existed and that it was a fraud. How then can the same President Buhari tell us that he has removed the same subsidy he claimed never existed? “The reality is that these people lied to Nigerians too much. They made promises they knew they won’t fulfill just to get to power. Now they are showing Nigerians their true colours. They are showing Nigerians that they have come to punish them with hardship. “Buhari and his APC promised to reduce petrol pump price to from N87 to N45 per litre; petrol is now N145. They promised to create three million jobs per year; they have instead created millions of unemployment. “They said $1 will be equal to N1; $1 is now N320. They promised to create better life for Nigerians, they have instead created hardship by making prices of basic commodities to skyrocket through their lack of policy direction.” A member of the House of Representatives, Olajide Jimoh, however, disagreed with Fayose, telling journalists on Thursday that the new policy is the best solution to constant fuel scarcity in the country. House of Representative member, Jide Jimoh, urges for patience. Jide who represents Mainland federal constituency, stressed that the increment in price of fuel is aimed at bringing lasting enjoyment to the people and that as a result, the current hardship should be seen as temporary. “I believe Nigerians will smile and there shall be light at the end of the tunnel but Nigerians must understand the situation that President Buhari means good for the country. “I just have to appeal to the people on this issue of increment on petroleum price and also to say that it is rather unfortunate and I believe if that is going to bring the way forward, we should just be patient. “What is of necessity now is for all of us to rationalise and be creative and at the end of the day allow wisdom to prevail in this circumstance. “There are so many areas that could be addressed such as the issue of transportation, the federal government should ensure provision of luxurious buses and rail lines. “Meanwhile, Nigerians should not expect things to happen in a day and I will urge them not to compare Goodluck Jonathan administration to this present one,” he said. Naij.com had earlier reported that the announced removal of subsidy on the premium motor spirit on Wednesday, may end up becoming a re-enactment of the January 2012 #occupyNigeria, as some agitated citizens have commenced a new campaign to have it repeated against the government of President Buhari. With the removal of subsidy on the product, the government fixed N145 as the maximum amount to be charged per litre on petrol and while some Nigerians are mobilising on social media for mass protest, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) thinks the fuel price hike was a coup against organised labour. https://www.naij.com/828133-wont-believe-new-names-fayose-called-buhari-apc-fuel-subsidy-removal.html?source=index_trending |
In 1 Timothy 2, Paul addresses women in the
Ephesian assembly who wanted to take over
teaching roles. He wrote, “A woman must quietly
receive instruction with entire submissiveness.
But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise
authority over a man, but to remain quiet” ( 1
Timothy 2:11–12 ). Paul here defines women as
learners during the worship service. They are not
to be teachers in that context, but neither are
they to be shut out of the learning process.
While it may seem obvious to us that women
should be taught God’s Word, that was not true
for those (like some at Ephesus, cf. 1 Timothy
1:7 ) who came from a Jewish background. First-
century Judaism did not esteem women.
Although they were not barred from attending
synagogue, neither were they encouraged to
learn. Most ancient religions—and even some
religions today—perceive women as unworthy of
participating in religious life. Unfortunately, that
historical treatment of women continues to incite
modern feminism.
The traditional treatment of women in Ephesus
partially explains why some of them in the
church overreacted to their suppression by
seeking a dominant position. Paul rebukes them
for that. Before he does, however, he affirms
their right to learn.
In 1 Timothy 2:11 Paul qualifies the way in which
women are to be learners: They are to “quietly
receive instruction with entire submissiveness.”
“Submissiveness” translates hupotagē, the noun
form of hupotassō, which means “to line up
under.” In the context of the worship service,
then, women are to be quiet and be subject to
the church leadership.
Some have tried to evade the plain meaning of
the text by arguing that “quietly” refers to a
woman’s meek and quiet spirit. Women, they
contend, can preach or teach as long as they do
it with the proper attitude. Others go to the
opposite extreme and use this text to prohibit
women from ever talking in church under any
circumstance—even to the person she is sitting
next to! Neither of those options is valid,
however. The context makes the meaning of
“quietly” quite clear.
In verse 12, Paul defines what he meant: “I do
not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority
over a man.” Women are to keep quiet in the
sense of not teaching, and they are to
demonstrate submission by not usurping
authority.
The Greek word translated “allow,” epitrepō , is
always used in the New Testament to speak of
permitting people to do what they want. Paul’s
choice of words implies that some women in
Ephesus desired to teach and have authority. In
today’s church, as in Ephesus, some women are
dissatisfied with their God-given roles. They want
prominent positions, including opportunities to
exercise authority over men. There is only one
biblical way to handle those situations for the
good of everyone concerned, and that is to do
what Paul did. He directly forbade women from
taking the authoritative pastor-teacher roles in
the church.
Paul also forbids women from exercising
“authority over a man.” The Greek word
translated “exercise authority over,” authentein,
appears only here in the New Testament. Some
have attempted to evade the force of Paul’s
prohibition by arguing that authentein refers to
abusive or destructive authority. Women,
according to this view, can both teach and
exercise authority over men so long as it is not
abusive or destructive. Others claim it carries
the idea of “author” or “originator,” thus Paul is
actually saying, “I do not allow a woman to teach
or proclaim herself author of man.”
In a study of the extrabiblical uses of authentein,
however, Dr. George Knight concludes that the
common meaning is “to have authority over.”
Paul, then, forbids women from exercising any
type of authority over men in the church,
including teaching.
These instructions to Timothy echo what Paul
earlier commanded the Corinthians: “As in all the
churches of the saints, women should remain
silent in the churches. They are not allowed to
speak, but must be in submission, as the Law
says . . . it is disgraceful for a woman to speak
in church” ( 1 Corinthians 14:33–35, NIV ). Many
claim Paul was addressing a cultural issue in
Corinth—nothing that ought to concern our
contemporary culture. But they fail to let the
text speak for itself: “As in all the congregations
of the saints, women should remain silent in the
churches” ( 1 Corinthians 14:33–34, NIV). That
isn’t a cultural issue; it is God’s standard for all
churches.
The context implies that the silence Paul
commands is not intended to preclude women
from speaking at all but to prevent them from
speaking in tongues and preaching in the church.
As in Ephesus, certain women in Corinth were
seeking prominent positions in the church,
particularly by abusing the gifts of speaking in
tongues and prophesying. Yet these women, who
joined in the chaotic self-expression Paul had
been condemning, should not have been speaking
at all. In God’s order for the church, women
should “subject themselves, just as the Law also
says” ( 1 Corinthians 14:34 ).
Women may be highly gifted teachers and
leaders, but those gifts are not to be exercised
over men in the context of the church. That is
true not because women are spiritually inferior to
men but because God’s law commands it. He has
ordained order in His creation—an order that
reflects His own nature and therefore should be
reflected in His church. Anyone ignoring or
rejecting God’s order, then, weakens the church
and dishonors Him. |
