Negotiate With Pro-Biafra Agitators – Ozekhome Tells Buhari

Mike Ozekhome (SAN)
Human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), on Monday said that the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government should refrain from use of brute force in finding a solution to the renewed agitations for Biafra Republic by certain groups in the country.

There has been series of protests in some parts of the country by members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) over the continued detention of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Ozekhome, while giving examples of countries that forcibly broke up in the past, said the federal government must urgently look into why the Igbos are calling for secession even after the end of the Biafra Civil War. According to him “The United Nations Charter and the African charter of Human and Peoples Right both recognise the rights of people of the world for self determination as to how the world will co-exist and live together”.

“In the past, countries that did not separate peacefully broke up violently. Remember the former Soviet Union USSR, remember the former Yugoslavia, even of recent we have the case of South Sudan and Sudan. In other words, man by nature wants to be independent from the control of others. That is why I think it is better to negotiate separation rather than a forcible break up”.

“The federal government must look into why this people still feel they do not belong to Nigeria after the 3 Rs (Reconstruction, Reconciliation and Rehabilitation) declared by General Yakubu Gowon in January 1970 when the civil war ended”. “Why do the Igbos still feel that they are at the periphery of national affairs and that they are not actually accommodated? These fears, these aspirations, these idiosyncracy meanings have to be looked into. Putting it down by sheer brute force will not end it,” he said.

Nigeria Should Let Biafra Go-Article Published on London Sun Times

This article which was published on London Sun Times Newspaper on November 7th, 2015 is making its rounds on Nigerian news forums and Social media. While some see such article as a possible indicator of changing attitudes, the British Government has remained mute over this matter. This does not mean that because Britain was the colonial administrator of Nigeria and actually the originator of forming the nation called Nigeria by merging the Northern, and Southern protectorates, that the decision on this matter would be made by Britain. Far from that.

As in cases before this, the United Nations plays a greater role in such situations as was the case in Southern Sudan recently. But the fact of the matter is that Nigerians would have to make this decision by themselves. There are demands for Biafra independence by IPOB and MASSOB and othesr, there are also demands for separation being pushed by Odua for the West and even in the Niger Delta there are building sentiments on this matter as well. Some in the north have called for the formation of Arewa Republic different from Boko Haram that wants to form an Islamic Caliphate in the northeast region of Nigeria.

It appears that many Nigerians are now more open to this question. Everyone seems to agree that Nigeria will not fight any more wars as was the case from 1967-1970 during the Nigeria-Biafra war when estimated 1-2 million lives perished largely due to  hunger and malnutrition. Many people particularly older generation of Nigerians are still traumatized by that war fatigue experience. The immediate trigger and resurgence of the Biafra independence was the result of the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu which created a rallying cause for many people particularly in the South East and South South regions. Of all these groups Biafra group seem to have gone further in this push for independence than other groups, and already have Flags, National colors and even a National anthem.

Complicit Silence Abounds about Biafraland
By Terry Paulson

Terry Paulson
Pope Francis’s speech to the UN called for a coordinated international response to the plight of Christians in the Middle East and Africa: “Christians, together with other cultural or ethnic groups,… have been forced to witness the destruction of their places of worship, their cultural and religious heritage, their houses and property, and have faced the alternative either of fleeing or of paying for their adhesion to good and to peace by their own lives, or by enslavement.

“There are individual persons, our brothers and sisters, men and women, young and old, boys and girls who weep, suffer and die. Human beings who are easily discarded when our only response is to draw up lists of problems, strategies and disagreements.”

While conducting Good Friday services in April, Pope Francis prayed, "We see in you our persecuted brothers, beheaded and crucified because of their faith in you, before our eyes or often with our complicit silence. In this third world war, waged piecemeal,… a form of genocide is taking place…."

As he led services, al-Shabab gunmen attacked churches in Kenya massacring nearly 150 people, singling out Christians for point-blank executions. Yes, prayer and international responses are needed, but the “complicit silence” of the media on the blatant abuse of religious freedom by militant Muslims is irresponsible.

One such continuing abuse is the ongoing genocide of the people of Biafra in what is now southeastern Nigeria. Prior to the creation of Nigeria by Britain’s departure, Biafra was a prosperous indigenous people with over a thousand years of history and a rich connection to Judeo-Christian values and free enterprise capitalism. The yoking together of these proud Igbo people with their Muslim neighbors from the North was an invitation to conflict and abuse.

After Igbo citizens attempted to establish the Republic of Biafra in 1967, a holy jihad was proclaimed by Islamic extremists in the Nigerian army. With army support, the Nigerian government initiated an economic blockade and tried justifying starvation as a legitimate weapon of war. The result was the genocide of millions of Igbo citizens and the systematic elimination of a majority of Biafran elites and leaders.

On December 15, 1968, the American Jewish Congress issued a memorandum, “The Tragedy of Biafra,” stating, “For more than a year, a little noticed but nonetheless savage and tragic war has been going on between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the former Eastern Region of that country which, in May 1967, proclaimed its independence as the Republic of Biafra.”

This September, Justice Oscar Onyeani Umah sent an open letter to the International Court of Justice in the Hague, noted that the 1967 war drew little public attention despite being responsible “for more deaths than have occurred in Vietnam, Burundi, and Sudan. The thirty-month-long war led to the death of over six million ethnic Igbos and other Easterners.”

Sadly, the silence of the international media regarding the plight of Biafra continues to this day. Recent killings of harmless Baifrans on August 30th by a combinations of military and police remains just one of many attacks allowed under the leadership of Nigerian President Mohammed Buhari.

In response to such killings and calls for a referendum for the peaceful secession of Biafra, Justice Oscar Onyeani Umah, called on the United Nation, The International Court of Justice, The Russian Government, The American Government, and the world at large to stop the continuing genocide in Biafra.

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Biafra Restoration Movement and the director of Radio Biafra (http://radiobiafra.co/), recently received a warm reception at the World Igbo Congress (WIC) Annual Convention in Los Angeles. Nnamdi and his supporters would welcome a peaceful secession by diplomatic means, but, if necessary, are ready to take up arms to achieve independence for Biafra.

The efforts to silence Radio Biafra by the Mohammed Buhari administration has failed. Recent trend data indicates that Radio Biafra is number one in growing audiences worldwide, ahead of CNN. It’s time for the world’s media and international leaders to wake up to the plight of Christians in Biafra, demand an end to persecution, and to support efforts to establish the Republic of Biafra. http://www.thebiafraherald.co/2015/10/complicit-silence-abounds-about.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&m=1
Politics / Ijaw Are The Allies To Igbo Seriake Dickson by emyphil: 1:35pm On Oct 06, 2015
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said the Igbo are allies of the Ijaw in the national politics of Nigeria

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said the Igbo are allies of the Ijaw in the national politics of Nigeria.

He stated this on Wednesday when the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the state conferred the chieftain title of ‘Ekwueme I of Bayelsa State’ on him at Government House,Yenagoa, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson.

Dickson  also received  a staff of office from the Igbo community in the state.

He expressed gratitude to Ndigbo for their show of support and solidarity to the Ijaw nation especially when it mattered most during the 2015 presidential election  in which former President Goodluck Jonathan was defeated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Through you, I want to appreciate the entire Ndigbo in Nigeria and in the diaspora for standing by the Ijaw nation through thick and thin, particularly for giving us the solid support when we needed it most”, h e said.

The governor  commended them for their contribution to the state’s economy.

He  promised to set aside a date for a special rally to enable the Igbo community publicly demonstrate support for his  government in view of their voting strength ahead of the December 5 governorship election in the state.

He assured the Igbo community that his administration would work assiduously to secure a more peaceful environment for their businesses to flourish.

He promised to consolidate on the achievements he had recorded in the maintenance of law and order to bring about development, peace and prosperity when re-elected.

He called on them to come out in their numbers to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the poll.

Dickson used the occasion of the ceremony to congratulate them on their successful celebration of the 2015 edition of the Igbo Day in the state, urging them to continue to conduct themselves peacefully.

He said, “Let me also thank you for your resolution yesterday (Tuesday), endorsing me and my deputy for a second term.

“That shows your strong resolve to continue to support and vote for the PDP in the next governorship election.

“You are the single largest non-indigenous community in this state. So, if all of you as united and well-organized as you are vote for the PDP, then it would contribute to the landslide victory that we are already working for.”

In his remarks, the Igwe- in-Council, Ohaneze Ndigbo in Bayelsa, Anthony Uwakwe, explained that the chieftaincy title was bestowed on Governor Dickson in recognition of his pragmatic leadership style.

Uwakwe, who performed the conferment of the chieftaincy title on Governor Dickson, stated that the governor had made tremendous achievements in the last three and half years.

I think we are winning the war or are we not winning it? Multiple explosions rip through Maiduguri

Maiduguri (Nigeria) (AFP) – Multiple explosions were heard Sunday on the outskirts of Maiduguri, a city in northeastern Nigeria that has repeatedly been attacked by Boko Haram jihadists, locals said.

They said loud explosions were heard from the areas of Kayamla and Dalori, three days after the insurgents attacked Maiduguri, leaving 10 dead and many more injured.

“The sound of bomb explosions is being heard from Kayamla and Dalori along Bama Road since around 7:00 am today,” said Kursi Yusuf, an employee at the nearby University of Maiduguri.

“We are not sure whether the terrorists are planning to invade the town but the sound vibrating is devastating,” he said.

Khadija Mustapha, a resident of Dalori Quarters, 11 kilometres from Maiduguri, said she had fled her home with her three daughters for fear of being caught in the explosions.

“I don’t know what will happen. The sound of the explosives is really disturbing,” she said. “Many of us… have vacated our homes.”

A military officer who did not want to be named confirmed the series of blasts but said troops were on top of the situation.

“The terrorists will not have their way,” he told AFP.

Boko Haram has repeatedly attacked Maiduguri with at least 10 people killed and 39 others injured on Thursday night when four suicide bombers blew themselves up in the city.

On September 20, some 117 people were killed in a wave of attacks blamed on the Islamists.

On Saturday in Nigeria’s capital Abuja, at least 18 people were killed and 41 wounded when multiple blasts rocked the crowded Kuje and Nyanya districts of the city.

Nigeria’s military has claimed a series of successes against Boko Haram in recent w eeks, which has led many to fear an increase in attacks against civilians in the restive northeast.

The conflict has claimed more than 1,260 lives in Nigeria alone since Muhammadu Buhari took office as president on May 29, according to an AFP tally.

At least 17,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million made homeless since the Boko Haram insurgency began in 2009.

more details BIAFRA DRAGGED TO NEW YORK COURT BY NIGERIA (ZOO) FOR EMBARKING ON BIAFRA FREEDOM & INDEPENDENCE

On the 28th of September 2015, the Nigerian (Zoo) Government through one of its agents said to be working as a journalist and representing Nigeria at the UN, dragged Biafra representatives to a court in New York.

The incident happened as IPOB delegates concluded their protest against the terrorist and pedophile Muhammadu Buhari at the UN building in New York and were retiring to their hotels. The Nigerian Agent accosted the Biafran Delegates and started threatening them with assassinating them and assassinating their families back home in Biafraland. The Nigerian Agent proceeded with taking pictures of the Biafran Delegates and started emailing the pictures to the DSS and other Buhari’s serial killers stationed in Nigeria.

At this point, the Biafran Delegates gently asked him to stop taking pictures of them without obtaining their permissions and requested for the ones taken to be deleted. The Nigerian Agent ignored them, threatened them the more, and continued with the snapshots. The Biafran Delegates now retrieved the phone-camera from the Nigerian Agent and proceeded to the nearest policeman to report the illegal act. As the Delegates advanced towards the security official, the Nigerian Agent started physical assaults on the Delegates and almost tore the T-shirts of some of them. As the Delegates ignored him, he now went into another strategy of yelling and shouting that the Biafran Delegates have attacked him and robbed him of his phone.

This came to the attention of a different set of security personnel who now took all the parties involved to the nearest New York court and the matter was entered into court proceedings. The Nigerian Agent was boasting that he will ensure that the Biafran Delegates would be jailed. When the matter was brought up for hearing, the Nigerian Agent ran away and was nowhere to be found although his details (name, address, contact info, etc etc) were taken by the court authorities and he must be available for the f ninal court hearing. The full identity including pictures of this Nigerian Agent will be made available to Biafrans when he shows up at the court for final hearing.

The case was fixed for final hearing on Thursday, January 14th, 2016 at 9:30am. The address of the court is 100 Center Street, New York, N. Y. 10013. ALL Biafrans are expected to be in the Court on that day and should be adorning their May-30th T-shirt. http://www.thebiafraherald.co/2015/10/biafra-dragged-to-new-york-court-by.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook&m=1
