Nigeria: Credible evidence that pro-Biafrans are targeted by police says Amnesty International

There is evidence that pro-Biafran separatists in Nigeria are targeted by police, Amnesty International told IBTimes UK, one day after dozens of people belonging to groups advocating for a separate state were arrested.

It is believed that dozens of members of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign States of Biafran (Massob) were arrested after the inspector general of police, Solomon E Arase, released a statement urging authorities to clamp down on people who behaved violently across the country. The statement read: "This directive becomes imperative owing to recent activities of members of the Massob and the Indigenous People of Biafra [Ipob] in some parts of the country."

What is the Republic of Biafra?

ibtimes.co.uk
Nigeria's former Eastern Region was proclaimed the Republic of Biafra in 1967. It was re-annexed to Nigeria three years later, following a civil war that claimed between one and three million lives.

The fact that Nigeria's oil was located in the south of the country played a major role in the eruption of the war, during which medicines and food shortage in Biafra led to the death of thousands of people.

Biafra has been commonly divided into four main "tribes": the Ibos, the Ibibio-Efiks, the Ijaws and the Ogojas.

The modern-day states that made up Biafra from the eastern region and midwest are: Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Delta, Rivers and Cross River and Edo.

Pro-Biafrans believe the modern-day Nigerian states that made up Biafra should be part of an independent state as people who inhabit these areas, and identify themselves as southerners, feel disenfranchised from those in the north.

The number of people arrested, originally thought to be around 200, was confirmed by the police to stand at 22. Four people were arrested in Anambra State, six in Imo, one in Abia and 11 in Delta State. They were all Massob members.

Amnesty said that after speaking with "dozens of Biafran activists" in the last few years, they believe that pro-Biafrans are targeted by police. A spokesperson for the group said: "There is credible evidence that they have been arbitrarily arrested, tortured and jailed in the past. They are still targeted by the police."

The spokesperson added that according to one of the group's researchers, there are "at least two dozen Biafran activists in almost every prison in the south east of Nigeria".

When contacted by IBTimes UK, Oleehkukyu Ali, spokesperson for the police in Anambra – one of the states where the Biafran activism is mostly widespread – said:" Recently, in this and other states in the country there has been a kind of excitement from members of pro-Biafran groups, and this excitement has led to their processions to become chaotic.

"So the police received instructions that anybody who incites in the name of any group people to go on processions that are violent in nature should be arrested."

Pro-Biafran activists have also alleged that the Nigerian police act violently against them. Unconfirmed reports said that three or four unarmed members of Ipob were killed by the Navy in Onitsha, Anambra, on 30 August.

Ifeanyi Adibe, a member of Ipob, told IBtimes UK that mass arrests, kidnappings, torture and killings of pro-Biafrans are "not a new thing". He alleged: "Hundreds are known to have been abducted in the middle of the night from their homes and [they] undergo torture in various underground Nigerian torture chambers. Many more are unaccounted for. The number of those already killed can not yet be established, but we know many are missing.

"The total lack of infrastructure and communication system has made it near impossible to get real time information of, or from Biafra terror victims," he continued. "We are monitoring the situation as close as the blackout allows us, but more importantly, we are having serious challenge convincing our dying and over stretched people to still remain calm and non-violent or fight back in legitimate self-defence."

Ali rejected the allegations of violence. He said: "We do not have any problem with pro-Biafrans here, the police are not violent against them. Any group has the right to associate, but if such group wants to do any procession, they should do it within the ambit of the law.

"Processions and demonstrations should not be detrimental to the state," he continued. "They should be done in line with the constitution, without violating the law of the land or infringe people's rights. But these groups went on a rampage in a number of areas, they caused a lot of traffic congestion and damages. But even when police was deployed, there was no violence, no problem at all.

"Pro-Biafrans are not considered as a threat, but inciting people to [participate] in violent processions is against the law and no government watches any group operates under such conditions.

If Igbos are butchered again, Nigeria will break; Fani- Kayode warns
on august 17, 2015 at 8:33 pm in news
Facebook Share Twitter Share
By Henry Umoru
ABUJA- FORMER Director of Publicity, Peoples Democratic Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDPPCO, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode Monday lampooned the Convener of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, describing his comments that President Muhammadu Buhari owes Igbos nothing as most
most insensitive, cruel and Puerile.

Fani- Kayode
Responding to comments credited to Junaid, Fani- Kayode in a message to Vanguard noted that his statements that If the igbo feel marginalised they should attempt to break away again, was most uncharitable and careless, warning that if there was any attempt to butcher the Ibos or a repeat of what happened in 1966, it would be resisted by not only the Ibos, but by all Nigerians, with attempt to secede, which according to him, would be successful.
According to him, the like of Junaid must learn from history, our mistakes, preach peace and peaceful coexistence, rather that boast and beat our chests for yet another round of war.
Fani- Kayode reacting to a statement titled, ” If the igbo feel marginalised they should attempt to break away again”- Dr. Junaid Mohammed, The Punch Newspaper, 17th August 2015, said, “Given the immense suffering that the igbo were subjected to both before, during and after the civil war this is one of most insensitive, cruel and puerile comments that I have heard in recent times.
“I daresay that if Junaid Mohammed’s Nigeria ever butchers over 100,000 innocent igbo civilians again, as they did in the north in 1966 just before the civil war, there will indeed be another attempt to secede, but this time it will not only be successful, but they will also take many others with them.
“Rather than boast and beat our chests, we must learn from our history and we must never repeat its mistakes.”
Dr. Junaid Mohammed, had in an interview in one of the national dailies( not Vanguard) , dismissed the sentiments shared by a former Governor of Anambra State that the Igbo have not been treated fairly in the governance of Nigeria.
Junaid who noted that people of the Igbo nation have enjoyed favourable treatment, said it was wrong to reward the Igbo simply on the basis of the Nigerian Civil War, which lasted between 1967 and 1970.
Mohammed had said, “If it is about Buhari making the appointments based on merit, I have no problems with it. I don’t believe Buhari or Nigeria owes any Igbo anything. I don’t care what Ezeife says; if they had seceded, there would have been no Nigeria today. As people who acted outside the interest of Nigeria as a country, to expect compensation is a very odd logic.
“If the Igbo don’t like it, they can attempt secession again. If they do, they must be prepared to live with the consequences. Nobody owes them anything and nobody is out to compensate them for anything.”

A Call for America to Support Freedom in Kurdistan and Biafra
Aug. 08, 2014
Do the Christian indigenous people of Kurdistan and Biafra deserve our support in their fight against Islamic extremists? While supplying weapons to some insurgents fighting for freedom in Syria, why has the Obama administration not supplied support and weapons to those in Kurdistan or Christian Nigeria fighting for their survival? Why has the administration refused to give support to the independence of these beleaguered peoples?

As ISIS expands its grip on lands in Iraq and turns its attention to Kurdistan, Prime Minister Maliki has finally sent in air support to the Kurds to stem the tide of the ISIS advance. Fearful that ISIS might capture Iraq's largest dam currently under the control of Kurdish fighters, Maliki sent Iraq's air force to bomb ISIS targets in Sinjar. But neither Maliki or the Obama administration have been willing to provide much needed ammunition and weapons to the Kurdish fighters.

With the Kurds in a legal fight with Maliki over giving the revenue from the sale of the crude oil in their region to Baghdad, the Obama administration has refused to support the Kurds in fear of justifying any partition of Iraq. But with Christians throughout Iraq seeking refuge in Kurdistan, is it not time to consider the calls for freedom coming from these war-torn regions?

After all, in 2010, President Obama joined the 145 countries who had supported the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. It affirms that "Indigenous peoples have the collective right to live in freedom, peace and security as distinct peoples and shall not be subjected to any act of genocide or any other act of violence."

It's time for the peoples of Kurdistan and Biafra to call on the world to go beyond words to actually support their cause. It's time for President Obama to stop retreating from leadership in this region and use the weight of his office to act.

In the final of three interviews with Nnamdi Kanu, the Director of Radio Biafra, hear him explain what people craving freedom want and need from America. Radio Biafra is not alone in calling for independence. In a recent sermon, Nigerian Pastor Emmanuel Bosun confirms the critical need to fight for freedom now before the Islamic Hausa and their Boko Haram killers can take full control of Biafraland.

The United States has always made economic development, military aid, and diplomacy a central tenet of its national security policy in supporting strategic developing countries. It's time to take a stand. Kurdistan and Biafra have long-standing histories to justify their existence as independent nations. Is it their majority Christian faith that is holding Obama and the world back from supporting their call for independence? Are Christians the only people around the world we won't support?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said in defending his stand against his homeland in Germany, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

Ben Carlson, in his column on "The Spreading Scourge of Anti-Christian Persecution," challenged all Americans to support action, "We have an obligation as Americans to denounce these acts of persecution. Even those who do not worship a higher deity should be concerned. For when we stand up to such intolerance, we are defending the root of freedom."

The Nigerian journalist known to have access to top commanders of the Boko Haram sect, Ahmad Salkida, has said Abubakar Shekau is alive and still presiding over the affairs of the notorious group.

Chadian president Idriss Deby had said Shekau had been replaced by one Mahamat Daoud.

However Salkida said Idriss Deby is only deceiving Nigerians.

“Idris Deby is wrong now as before when he deceived former president Jonathan in phantom negotiation. Shekau is alive and leads ISWAP or BH,” he wrote on Twitter.

Billionaire Richard Branson from the United Kingdom used his tweeter handle @richardbranson Thursday evening to remind the world about the Biafran genocide that world leaders have conspicuously avoided. 48 years after the British government led by then prime minister Harold Wilson actively participated in a genocidal annihilation of the Biafran people, the world is yet to hold responsible those who took part in what is unarguably one of the darkest periods of modern history.

Interestingly, Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of virgin group of companies, chose the article titled ‘Biafra is dying on its feet’ to draw attention to the inhumanity of war and tyranny as captured through the lens of photographers. You can find his article with more photos about this issue on virgin.com.

Never in modern history have so many people been massacred so much in such large numbers by any available means and the world simply moved on.

The human suffering that is Biafra is not yet over. Today, Biafrans are still prisoners in their homeland. From being a once great race of people who pride themselves in hard work, knowledge, culture and religion, they are essentially slaves in the British created Nigeria.

Here is the tweet from Branson.
