God’ll Not Forgive Nigerians If Atiku Defeats Buhari In 2019 – Presidency President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aide Lauretta Onochie has said that God will not forgive Nigerians should former vice-president Atiku Abubakar emerge as President in 2019. Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s number two citizen from 1999 to 2007, emerged as the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party’s elective national convention in Port Harcourt on 6 October. And many political observers believe that despite the high number of candidates vying for the post, the race to Aso Rock would be between Buhari and Atiku. Commenting on the former vice- president’s emergence as the PDP candidate, Onochie said on her Twitter handle that ”with what we know about Atiku, God will not forgive us if we do not stop him from gaining access to our national treasury.” Onochie was making reference to remarks made by Atiku’s former boss, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, who said in his book, My Watch, that with what he knew about his former deputy, God would not have forgiven him if he supported Atiku to succeed him in 2007. But Onochie added that ”luckily, Nigerians are ready, willing and able in stop him. God bless Nigeria.” https://www.concisenews.global/2018/10/09/godll-not-forgive-nigerians-if-atiku-defeats-buhari-presidency/

APC primary: How Buhari’s votes compare to 2015 The National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday, October 6 announced that President Muhammadu Buhari got 14.8 million votes during the direct presidential primary the party held on Friday, Sept. 29. Chairman of the Convention Election Committee and Governor-elect of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, said President Buhari polled 14,842,072 votes in 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Analysis by the Daily Trust revealed that the total number of votes given to President Buhari by APC members during the direct primaries is just 582,849 short of the 15, 424,921 he got during the 2015 general elections when he contested against then President Goodluck Jonathan. The National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, had on Wednesday, September 12 while presenting membership card to President Buhari, said the party under his leadership had developed a database of 15.6 million members. This means over ninety per cent of the registered members of the party voted for President Buhari during the direct primaries. The figures given by the APC indicated that votes were cast and counted in all the states and the FCT as follows: Abia, 43,308; Adamawa, 263,945; Akwa Ibom, 140,822; Anambra, 248,268; Bauchi, 316,199; Bayelsa, 210,201; Benue, 259,130; Borno, 466,601; Cross River, 145,615; Ebonyi, 157,455; Edo, 505,827; Ekiti, 199,724; Enugu, 17,291; Gombe, 112,857; Imo, 115,830; Jigawa, 202,597; Kaduna, 597,209; Kano, 2,931,335; Katsina, 802,819; Kebbi, 210,687; Kogi, 387,003; Kwara, 159, 822; Lagos, 2,272,722; Nasarawa, 110,879; Niger, 387,097; Ogun, 586,453; Ondo, 436,968; Osun, 512,013; Oyo, 421, 200; Plateau, 123,073; Rivers, 388,653; Sokoto, 313,091; Taraba, 139,102; Yobe, 199,414; Zamfara, 247,847; and FCT, 54,128. But reports from our correspondents on the APC presidential primary indicated that while elections did not hold in some states, the president was returned through a voice vote in others. Similarly, the figures given by some governors soon after the primary were different from what the APC declared on Saturday. For instance, while Ekiti and Ogun supported President Buhari’s re-lection through a voice vote, the APC said the president got 199,724 and 586,453 respectively. The party also said the president got 512,013 votes in Osun while reports from the state on the day of the election indicated that he was actually voted through affirmation by APC members. Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, who was the ‘Returning Officer’ for the exercise in Kaduna, had shortly after the presidential primary said Buhari got 1,956,500 votes but the results released by the Fayemi committee indicated that he got 597,209 in Kaduna. Sources within the APC in Taraba State said the president was given 875,385 votes during the primary but the results released by the Fayemi committee showed that Buhari got 139, 102. Another marked difference is the number of votes the president got in states as against what he got during the recent primaries. In Kano for instance, Buhari got 1,903,999 during the 2015 general elections while he got 2,931,235 votes. He got 473,543 votes in Borno State during the 2015 general elections but received 1,226,181 during the just concluded primaries. APC reacts The APC acting National Publicity Secretary Mr Yekini Nabena, when contacted, said the aggressive sensitization and mobilisation of the people, especially party members was responsible for the increase in the numbers of voters for President Buhari at the presidential primary election in some States. When asked to explain the reason for rise in the number of voters for President between 2015 presidential election and now, Nabena said “the sensitisation of the people and awareness created made the increment possible.” Daily Trust reports that the Peoples Democratic Party had, while reacting to the APC Presidential primary, alleged that the figure the party announced was to give the impression that President Buhari enjoys massive support ahead of the 2019 presidential election. The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, said what the APC and the Presidency failed to note was that Nigerians were already aware that no ballot allegedly took place and that such figures could not be tallied through mere voice vote involving few members of a derelict and disorganised party. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/apc-primary-how-buharis-votes-compare-to-2015.html |

October 8 2018 Press Statement National Convention: PDP Dismisses APC’s Vote-Buying Allegation …Says Spurious Allegations Will Not Help Buhari The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) notes the uneasiness, apprehension and nervousness in the drowning Buhari Presidency and the fading All Progressives Congress (APC) since the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as Presidential candidate of the PDP. The PDP said such nervousness in the deflated party has led to a renewed attempt at smear campaign with spurious allegations against our Presidential candidate; a defeatist approach that shows that the APC and the Buhari Presidency are afraid of the Atiku candidacy and have reached their wits end, well ahead of the elections. The claims, by APC, of vote-buying at our national convention, is therefore, not only false but completely unfounded and symptomatic of a party that has totally lost bearing and now engaged in rumour mongering. However, for us as a party, such allegation from the APC is not unexpected given that it had tried everything possible to scuttle our national convention and Presidential primary but woefully failed, hence the desperation to engage in attempt to discredit the process that has been acclaimed as the beat in our political history. Unlike the APC that has an unpopular Presidential candidate, who has failed in governance, foisted on it without an election, the whole world watched with excitement as 12 aspirants contested the PDP Presidential primary, where delegates drawn from respected Nigerians across the country, freely voted for a candidate of their choice. To the amusement of Nigerians, the APC conducted a non-contested convention in which it declared President Buhari as “winner” with over 14 million fictitious votes. In their desperation, they forgot that “Winning” as a word connotes contest. Strangely, the APC declared a candidate as having won when there was never a contest - a charade by a deceptive party with duplicitous leaders! While we note that the APC is suffering from a pre-defeat trauma, we caution this fading party and its presidential candidate, who had failed our nation, to steer clear of our party and get ready for issue-based campaign ahead of the 2019 elections. It is instructive to state that their attempt at smear campaign against our candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will fail as Nigerians are interested only in the candidate that can make a turn around of the ugly situation Buhari Presidency has sunk us. The National body of the All Progressives Congress(APC) has said that Sen. Shehu Sani remained its only senatorial candidate from Kaduna Central. The Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Yekini Nabena, gave the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Abuja on Sunday. He said Sani was the only senatorial candidate from the zone that was duly recognised by the national body. Sen. Shehu Sani had distanced himself from the primary election held in the state on Saturday, where he was said to have lost to Special Adviser to Gov. Nasir El-rufai on Political Affairs, Malam Uba Sani. The Returning Officer of the primary held at Murtala Muhammed Square, Kaduna, Prof. Eddie Floyd-Igbo, declared Uba Sani, a Special Adviser to Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i, as the winner with 2,088 votes, while Shehu Sani garnered only 15 votes. Another rival, Usman Ibrahim-Sardauna, was said to have secured only 129 votes. Nabena, however, reiterated that, “as far as Kaduna Central Zone 2 is concerned, the only candidate is Sen. Shehu Sani. “Yes election took place in that zone because of the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly but for the senatorial position the only candidate is Sen. Shehu Sani. “The governor cannot dictate to the party.” The APC headquarters had announced Sen. Shehu Sani as it’s only candidate cleared to contest the Kaduna Central senatorial seat in 2019 elections. http://saharareporters.com/2018/10/08/apc-primaries-shehu-sani-remains-kaduna-central-candidate-–-apc-

Phrank Phrank Shaibu is a Public Communication Consultant who writes from Abuja. In this piece, he discusses five (5) reasons he believes the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar will “beat Buhari silly” come 2019 election. Nigeria’s main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has picked Abubakar to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari who is seeking a second term in presidential polls scheduled for February 2019. According to him, one of the reasons is that President Buhari’s approval ratings have fallen even below average. Atiku Abubakar had, earlier today, been announced as the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, primary held in Port Harcourt on Saturday. Following Atiku’s victory, Shaibu said the focus of his piece is to show why the Wazirin Adamawa is Nigeria’s next president. Read the piece below: “This past week marked a turning point in the nation’s political history. It was Atiku and all the news around his much-anticipated victory at the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which ended on Sunday in Port Harcourt. It is also the week that the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) affirmed President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate for the 2019 presidential election. As it is with any major happening in the nation’s political firmament, Atiku’s victory is the trending story on the internet since the midday of Sunday. His landslide victory has got everyone talking. The focus of this piece is therefore on why he is Nigeria’s next president. Buhari’s Dismal Performance It is no longer news that President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval rating has taken a plunge in the last three years that he has been in office, which informs the belief by political pundits that a run against the president in 2019 posses no political risk. Indeed NOI Polls, the No 1 country specific polling services for Nigeria has returned a damning verdict on President Buhari’s stewardship, with the results of its poll showing that over the last three years, the President’s job performance rating has taken a downward turn for the worse, plummeting from his highest rating of 78 percent and 80 percent recorded in September and October 2015, to 37 percent recorded in August 2016 and more recently 38 percent and 39 percent in the months of February and April 2018 respectively. In more specific terms, the average approval rating of the president in 2018 stands below average at 39.6 percent; with his latest rating of May 2018 at 41 percent. He did poorly in all areas of assessment. So if 2018 holds the truth for 2019, a well grounded candidate like former Vice President Atiku can confront the president with possibility of electoral good show. Atiku’s Intimidating Track Record There is no gainsaying the fact that Atiku Abubakar has been the most prepared Nigerian to steer the ship of state in the last decade. However he hasn’t been able to actualise his ambition because of the disposition of some detractors who feel threatened by the rich credentials that he brings to the table. But this is understandable, because politics taint noble people. So it is with Atiku. After impacting our national life for four solid decades, his impeccable record speaks volume about his public spiritedness and his support for worthy causes. At an age when many still prattled and sought relevance, Atiku bestrode Nigeria like a quintessential colossus, dishing out goodwill, service and altruism. These are undeniable. From his days as a top Customs Man, through his attempt to fly the flag of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), Atiku has gone through the drudgery of grassroots politics to etch his name as Governor-Elect of Adamawa State in 1999. His crowning glory is as Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between 1999 and 2007. The question remains, if he was not good, how has he been able to stamp a seal of excellence everywhere he went all these years? There is no lying that Atiku’s role as Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo has become a reference point on how deputies can be loyal yet effective. Except for cynics, Atiku’s intellect and contributions to the current debate for restructuring and fiscal federalism is incontrovertible. Furthermore, governance is not about making pretences to integrity or about some shadowy fight against graft. It has little to do with age. It has more to do with competence, sensitivity and responsiveness to the plights of the governed. In and out of public offices, the Wazirin Adamawa exemplifies excellence. His mission, as contained in his acceptance speech in Port Harcourt has a huge trunk to do with making Nigeria a better place for all. The emergence of Atiku as the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was no happenstance. It is consistent with the resolve of members of the party to raise the bar in public service and put Nigeria back on the part of sustainable growth and development. Restructuring and Fiscal Federalism About two years after his tough lecture on the state of the nation, tongues are still wagging. Many Nigerians believe that his standpoint on the vexed issues on restructuring and fiscal federalism are timely wake up call, and will form a major part of the issues that will shape campaigns for the nation’s most coveted political position in 2019. Being that a man of Atiku’s standing was the one canvassing for ‘resource control’ made a lot of difference within the context of power alignments. He has consistently argued that, Nigeria as currently constituted as an entity is rooted in corruption, impunity and injustice and thus must be reconstituted. According to him, political and civic leaders from across the country must come together, discuss, negotiate and make the necessary compromises and sacrifices needed to restructure our federation to make the nation a stronger, more united, productive, and competitive country. His contention is that there is a flaw in the country’s constitution which was why there is a recurring cry of marginalization from every section of the country. Atiku believes that no section of Nigeria can claim correctly that its people are better served by the current structure of our federation. He has since challenged those who against restructuring the country’s federal system as it currently stands, to show an example of countries that are functioning well with a structure such as Nigeria. Whatever one’s arguments are, restructuring will shape the way Nigerians will vote during the Nigeria’s next presidential election. A Robust Manifesto Atiku Abubakar’s blueprint for Nigeria is by far his strongest weapon. The rich manifesto addresses all the challenges currently confronting the country. From defence and security, through job creation, education and infrastructure to poverty alleviation and power, no document from any presidential candidate in the history of Nigeria come close to Atiku’s manifesto in terms of concept, content and creativity. To convince Nigerians he has the vision and the preparation to change the nearly hopeless situation and offer a better deal, Atiku has articulated an ambitious manifesto, arguably one of the most elaborate in Nigeria’s political history. The same edge is seen on the social media where the Wazirin Adamawa is a household name. The import of this is that VP Atiku is by far more popular and more acceptable to the people than any politician seeking to be president in 2019. Transitory Memory of Nigerian Voters Nigerians have a short fuse when it comes to showing understanding with leaders, especially when such leaders are not delivering on electoral promises. I recall how in 2011 former President Goodluck Jonathan was the darling of Nigerians across ethnic and religious divide. He won the 2011 elections with several millions of votes ahead of General Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Pastor Tunde Bakare. By 2015, this same Jonathan lost to Buhari and left the scene with so much hatred from the voting public. Buhari who had been rejected at the polls three consecutive times was elected. A Buhari who had been roundly disdained as a bigot, a religious extremist, and an unsellable candidate became the toast of Nigerian voters. This time around, history is about to repeat itself with an Atiku victory at the general election in February.” By Phrank Shaibu https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/10/5-reasons-atiku-will-beat-buhari-silly-shaibu/amp/ |
