PoliticsINEC Apologises To NAF Over Wrongful Accusation Of Rivers Polls Disruption by EngrHumble(op): 7:17pm On Mar 12, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission has apologized to the Nigerian Air Force for wrongfully accusing it of using its personnel to invade its premises in Rivers State and disrupt the collation of results in the protracted governorship and House of Assembly polls.

It will be recalled that the Spokesman for the INEC in Rivers State had accused the NAF and other security agencies of invading its collation centre and disrupting the exercise thereby forcing it to discontinue the declaration of results, a development that is currently generating tension across the country and beyond.

But apparently realizing its mistake, INEC said on Tuesday that it had discovered that none of the NAF personnel was involved in the chaos that was recorded in the premises at the weekend leading to the suspension of poll results collation and announcement.

In the statement absolving NAF entitled: “Inadvertent Involvement of the Nigerian Air Force in the Disruption of the March 9 2019 Collation Process”, INEC said it also discovered that the men in military uniforms were neither not from the NAF.

The statement which was made available to Vanguard on Tuesday was signed by the Head of Voter Education in Rivers State, Mr. Edwin Enabor for the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga.

The statement said: “Further to our investigation and clarification from the NAF Command in Rivers State on the invasion of our offices/disruption of collation process by armed men in military uniforms, the commission wishes to state that the persons purported to have worn the Air Force uniforms were neither personnel of the service nor authorized by the service to be at INEC office.

“The commission therefore wishes to express its regret at the embarrassment this might have caused the NAF,” INEC said.

The apology by INEC notwithstanding, its earlier claim at the weekend that military personnel took over its premises and hijacked the collation of results, has gone viral and attracted global attention, forcing some countries to issue threats against Nigeria.

Science/TechnologyWorld Wide Web Celebrates 30th Anniversary by EngrHumble(op): 7:06pm On Mar 12, 2019
The World Wide Web is celebrating its 30 years of existence and enabling people to connect better on the internet . The founder and web inventor , Mr Tim Berners - Lee, on Tuesday , took to the web ’s foundation to celebrate the anniversary.
Berners - Lee, a Computer Engineer from Switzerland, in 1989 proposed a way for computers to easily share information and since then people have been sending more emails than mails. “ Today, 30 years on from my original proposal for an information management system , half the world is online. “ It’s a moment to celebrate how far we ’ve come but also an opportunity to reflect on how far we have yet to go .

“ The web has become a public square, library, doctor ’ s office, shop, school , design studio , an office , cinema , bank and so much more.
“ With every new feature , new website , the divide between those who are online and those who are not increases and making it more imperative to make the web available for everyone ,” he said.
Berners - Lee, however , said that the web had also created the opportunity for scammers, facilitated the spread of hatred and aided all kinds of crime . He said that the level of crime perpetuated via the web could increase over the years, adding that there are sources of dysfunction affecting today’s web .
“ Deliberate, malicious intent , system design that creates perverse incentives and unintended negative consequences had contributed in creating a dysfunction on the web .
“ As the web reshaped our world , we have the responsibility to make sure it is recognised as a human right and built for the public good ,” he said. He assured that the web foundation was working with governments, companies and citizens to make the web safer .
According to him , the fight for the web is one of the most important causes of the present generation . https://punchng.com/world-wide-web-celebrates-30th-anniversary/
PoliticsA-ibom Guber: Ekere Vows To Reclaim Stolen Mandate by EngrHumble(op): 10:29am On Mar 12, 2019
GOVERNORSHIP candidate of the All
Progressives Congress, APC in Akwa Ibom state,
Obong Nsima Ekere has vowed to reclaim the
mandate the gave him during the Saturday March
09 gubernatorial poll which was stolen by the
People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Ekere who spoke to newsmen on Monday
evening in his Uyo residence, insisted that Akwa
Ibom people voted for the APC in spite of plots
by the PDP to woo them with money.

He added that why they are rejecting the results
announced by the Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC under the leadership of Mr
Mike Igini was because they results did not
correspond with the results declared at the
polling units.

He stressed, “Akwa Ibom people shunned those
monies, came out in their hundreds of thousands
to vote for me and other APC candidates In the
governorship and House of Assembly election
held on 09 March.

“And we were speaking to all our agents in the
2,980 polling units in Akwa Ibom state and the
results we got as election was going on and at
the end of counting in each of the polling units
across the state showed clearly that Akwa Ibom
people had embraced change; they showed
clearly that they wanted APC.

“And the results showed that APC won in the 26
Local government areas of the state. We have the
results of the polling units already to confirm
this”

Ekere who maintaned that his party do not
understand how Mr. Igini the Resident Electoral
Commissioner and the staff of INEC managed to
come out with the results that were now coming
out from the collation centers because they were
different from the results from polling units
He added that they also noticed with dismay and
total disappointment that against the provisions
of the electoral act and guidelines released by
INEC, that there were no collations at the ward
centre in the state

And I will like Mr. Mile Igini to explain to Akwa
Ibom people and to the whole country why he
chose to make his own guidelines for the
elections different from the guidelines that was
released by the INEC..

“The resutls from the collations according to
Mike Igini were totally different from the results
that were obtained from the polling units across
the state.

“We did not know how they did their collation,
maybe they had a different model for collation
different from what is known and acceptable for
electioneering all over the world.

“But generally I want to thank the people of Akwa
Ibom people for the massive support which they
had given to the APC and the way they had voted
overwhelmingly for APC and for myself in the last
election and to assure them that by the grace of
God we shall recover the mandate which they
freely gave to the APC using the appropriate
channels that are available and known to Law”
. He added that Igini was supposed to be neutral,
” but his conduct and the things he had done
both in the presidential and national assembly
election and the gunernatorial and state House of
Assembly election has confirmed our fears”

The APC gunernatorial candidate said that they
had hoped that the INEC chairman and the
authority had listened to their plea and had
changed Mr. Igini as the Resident Electoral
Commissioner for Akwa Ibom state.

“And we actually find it so difficult to understand
why it was so difficult for them to make that
change. From 1999 every election year, Resident
Electoral Commissioner’s and staff of INEC who
had been resident in a particular state for a long
time were always moved around.

“That way you are sure that they will not come
and allow their alliances and friendship
developed in that state over the period they had
stayed there to influence their conduct.
But surprisingly INEC refused to do this and this
is the first time this is happening.

” They allowed Mr. Igini to frustrate the wishes of
Akwa Ibom people. And this is most unfortunate.
And I can tell you just like my party did during a
press conference in the morning, we will not
accept this the results”, Ekere declared

Nairaland GeneralEdo, CBN Partner On Development Of 100,000- Hectare Plantation by EngrHumble(op): 9:44pm On Jan 27, 2019
The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government is in discussions with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to develop a programme that will see investors taking up 100,000 hectares of agricultural land in the state for plantation development.
The governor said this when he met with a delegation from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), led by IFC Vice President, Middle East and Africa, Mr. Segio Pimenta, on a courtesy visit to the Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The governor said that the state is keenly interested in increasing agricultural land under cultivation in the state to create wealth, fight deforestation and boost the economy, noting that the concerns of environmentalists are taken into consideration in increasing the hectarage under cultivation in the state.
According to him, “Edo State has the largest oil palm estate in the country even that is comparatively small when you relate it to what is happening in Southeast Asia. Total agricultural land under cultivation is under 70,000 hectares which is less than one farm in Indonesia.
He continued, “We want to make sure that what we produce can compete globally. As such, we decided to first deal with concerns of the environment by taking a forest audit and now we have been able to earmark close to 250,000 hectares of degraded forest land for agricultural purpose.
“We made a commitment last week to CBN to make 100,000 available to be properly screened by investors, as the CBN wants to develop a programme with us as a pilot.”
“We want to get a commitment of getting or re- growing one hectare of forest from every four hectares cultivated in the state. This will help us to be competitive in the next few years in terms of our forestry assets,” he added. Pimenta, on his part, said the organisation has heard of all the good works the governor was doing to develop the state and its economy, which are geared towards making life better for the people of the state.

He said the organisation is supporting progressive states that are doing well in various areas, with education as one of the major areas of focus, noting “Education is one area the state is getting our fundamental support. We look at human capacity index focusing on how we can help build human capacity in countries and states we operate in. This is responsible for the collaboration with Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EDOBEST) programme and BRIDGE.”
