Tottenham and Liverpool play for the biggest prize in club football on Saturday as the two Premier League teams go head-to-head in the Champions League final. Liverpool are aiming to win their sixth European Cup in Madrid while a surprise victory for Spurs would earn them their first. Here, AFP Sport looks at five key battles that could decide the contest. Pochettino v Klopp Mauricio Pochettino has said he expects this match to be a battle of emotions, not tactics, but his duel with Jurgen Klopp could go a long way to settling the final. For Pochettino, the big call will be around Harry Kane, who could be fit enough to start but will he be sharp enough to merit the risk? Klopp’s biggest selection dilemma is in midfield, where he has to pick three from Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Fabinho. His choice could offer a clue as to Liverpool’s approach, whether they want a fast, open game, the kind they usually favour. It is the kind Tottenham, with their speed in attack, might be happy with too. Salah v Rose Mohamed Salah played only 30 minutes of last year’s final, forced off after a collision with Sergio Ramos, and the Egyptian will surely be eager to make up for lost time. Even if his season has not had the explosiveness of last, Salah remains Liverpool’s deadliest threat and how Danny Rose handles him will be key to Tottenham’s hopes. Rose was outstanding during Tottenham’s quarter-final triumph over Ajax, showing the kind of form that once made him one of the finest full- backs in Europe. A repeat this weekend would give Spurs a good chance. Eriksen v Wijnaldum Georginio Wijnaldum was the star of Liverpool’s incredible comeback against Barcelona in the semi-finals and Klopp is likely to rely on him again in Madrid. Wijnaldum’s versatility has been invaluable to Klopp, who will hope the Dutchman can use his athleticism and power to set the tempo in midfield. For Tottenham, Christian Eriksen will be looking to run the game too, but more quietly, the Dane’s craft and vision will be essential if Spurs want to break down Liverpool’s stubborn defence. If Eriksen is denied space to thread balls for the likes of Kane, Son and Dele Alli to find, Liverpool could be halfway there. Liverpool v Expectation It has been a long time since Liverpool last went into a European final as favourites and much could depend on how they handle the pressure. Liverpool finished 26 points above Tottenham in the Premier League this season, beat them home and away, and have lost to them only once in the last 13 matches. They also know what it feels like to play in a Champions League final, with most of this team there in Kiev last year, when they were beaten by Real Madrid. That experience should be an advantage but expectation can create tension too. Liverpool must not blink. Tottenham v Nerves Tottenham are the underdogs but there is never nothing to lose in a game of this magnitude. For some of their players, it is likely to be their only shot at winning club football’s biggest prize and for all of them except Toby Alderweireld, it will be their first Champions League final. Alderweireld and Hugo Lloris, who won the World Cup with France last year, will be among those trying to keep their team-mates calm because against Liverpool, notorious for fast starts, there will be no time for adjustment. After three weeks to stew, Spurs have to ensure nerves do not strangle their performance. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/05/tottenham-vs-liverpool-five-key-battles-to-decide-champions-league-final/

The Federal Government has invited world leaders for the maiden June 12 Democracy Day celebration instead of the inauguration ceremony to save cost. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this on Monday while addressing newsmen in Abuja. Mohammed reiterated that the presidential inauguration ceremony would be low-key as a number of the events slated for the occasion had been moved to June 12 Democracy Day. According to the minister, the official commencement of the new Democracy Day in 2019 is in fulfillment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration in 2018. “Activities leading to the inauguration of Mr President officially kick off today with this media conference and will be followed on Tuesday by the commencement of a three-day National Youth Entrepreneurship Empowerment Summit. “The Federal Executive Council Valedictory Session will be held at the Council Chambers, State House, Abuja, on Wednesday; a Special Juma’t Lecture and prayer will be held on Friday at the National Mosque. “The First Lady’s interaction with women is slated for Saturday while a special Inter- denominational Church Service will hold on Sunday at the National Christian Centre. “Mr President will give a Children’s Day broadcast on May 27 to be followed later in the day by a Children’s Variety Party, the minister said. He said that the swearing-in of the President and the Vice President would hold on May 29 at the Eagle Square and would be followed by a State Banquet at the State House. Mohammed said that the event marking the June 12 Democracy Day celebration would kick off on June 7 with a Historical Exhibition in Arts, Pictures and Immersive Environment, and would run through June 12. According to him, the historical exhibition will be followed on June 9 by a Youth Concert, Creative Industry and Entertainment Night at the International Conference Centre. “Secondary Schools Exhibition/Panel Discussion is slated for June 11 and will feature three events, the PMB Oratorical Contest, an Anti- corruption Summit and First Lady’s Commissioning Programme in Yola. “June 12 will start off with a parade at the Eagle Square and the Democracy Day programme will be wrapped up with a Dinner and Gala Night at the State House,” he added.. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/05/democracy-day-world-leaders-to-join-nigeria-in-celebrating-june-12/ |
A 39-year-old petty trader, Moji Aderibigbe, accused of stripping naked and pouring urine on the church altar, on Friday appeared in a Yaba Chief magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Aderibigbe, who resides in Pedro Area of Lagos is charged with insult to a religion and disorderly conduct. The Police prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at 8 p.m. on May 13, at No. 49, Onabola St., Ladi-lak area of Bariga, Lagos. Olaluwoye told the court that Mr Francis Osibowale, the pastor of the Firebrand Power Ministry, caught the defendant’s 15-year-old son vandalising church property. “My Lord, when Aderibigbe was told that the pastor had taken her son to the station, she took off her clothes inside the church building. “She also climbed the altar and began to urinate,” she said. The offence, she said, contravened the provisions of sections 124 and 168 (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011. After the charge was read to her, she pleaded not guilty. The insult to religion carries two years jail term while disorderly conduct stipulates three months upon conviction, both with options of fine. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum. Oghere ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos state government. She adjourned the case until May 22 for mention. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/05/woman-allegedly-striping-naked-in-church-urinate-altar/

Over 700, 000 fans of the popular television show, ‘Game of Thrones’ have called for a remake of what they termed “a disappointing last season.” The fans are signing a change.org petition titled “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.” The petition had garnered 736, 080 signatures at the time of this report on Friday, and was gaining more supporters by the second. The petition read, “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense.” HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’, which was adapted from George R.R. Martin’s ‘A song of fire and ice’, started outpacing the series of novels in season six. After the show was on hiatus for all of 2018, the premiere of season eight in April was the most- watched one-day event in HBO’s more than four- decade history. A lot of fans have described the season as underwhelming and a poor finale to a great show. Among the numerous issues, fans complained about the poorly lit ‘Battle of Winterfell’ in episode three. They also complained about the inconsistent storylines, poor character arcs and were outraged when the otherwise carefully shot series accidentally left a paper coffee cup in episode four. HBO acknowledged that the presence of the disposable cup in the scene was a mistake, and later edited it out of the episode. In the penultimate episode of the series, which aired May 12, Daenerys executed Lord Varys before wiping out King’s Landing and most of its population, even after the bells of surrender sounded. Many thought the massacre was completely out- of-character for Daenerys — or at the very least needed more of a build-up. ‘Game of Thrones’ has had an average of 43 million viewers per episode which is expected to rise as the final episode airs on Sunday. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/05/game-of-thrones-petition-over-700-000-fans-want-season-8-remade/ |
I don't know what kind of class this is, but it looks like one I'd sign up for! A student at Cornell had stripped during her presentation to protest her professor. The action sparked reactions as several other students stripped too. I don't really care what they're talking about and I didn't even listen to what she was saying. Didn't matter and I don't care! I'm just happy they're in class doing work and not out in the quad protesting. If she wants to do her presentation in her skivvies, then more power to her. Not a big deal. NY Post stated: A Cornell University senior stripped to her bra and underwear during her thesis presentation — and got two dozen others to join in — to protest her professor’s contention the week before that her clothing was inappropriate. Letitia Chai led the revealing demonstration Saturday during her “Acting in Public: Performance in Everyday Life” class to stand up “against oppressive beliefs,” she said in a Facebook Live video of the event. It came days after her professor, Rebekah Maggor, questioned whether the denim cutoff shorts Chai was wearing during a test run of the presentation were too short. The video is on this Facebook link below https://mobile.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=364837930674880&id=364667677358572&_rdr

Manchester City have won the 2018/2019 English Premier League title after defeating Brighton 4-1 at the Amex Stadium. Sergio Aguero scored at the 28th minute to cancel out Glenn Murray’s lead for Brighton. He drilled a low left-footed strike between Matthew Ryan’s legs into the net. Aymeric Laportegot the second for the Citizens in the 38th minute, and Riyaz Mahrez scored the third after 63 minutes, firing to the top cornet of the net. The final goal of the day came from İlkay Gündoğan with a brilliant free-kick in the 72nd minute, to hand Man. City the second Premier League title in a row, with a total of 98 points after 32 wins, one point above Liverpool, who beat Wolverhampton Wanders 2-0 at Anfield on the final day. They become the first team to do so for the first time since the 1992/1993 season, when the league was re-formed. https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-man-city-wins-2018-2019-epl-title/

By Femi Aribisala The man who receives Christ as Lord and Saviour develops a consciousness of God. What does it mean to “walk in the Spirit?” The very idea is bound to be puzzling to “Nicodemus Christians.” When told of the imperative to be “born again,” Nicodemus asks: “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” (John 3:4). Similarly, how can a man of flesh walk in the Spirit? God with us Man has always lived in God. Moses says: “LORD, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. (Psalm 90:1). Paul reiterates this: “In (God) we live, and move, and have our being.” (Acts 17:28). However, we did not know this because God is spirit and, since Adam, man has been spiritually dead. But all this changed with the redeeming work of Jesus Christ, which re-ignited spiritual man. “This mystery has been kept in the dark for a long time, but now it’s out in the open. God wanted everyone, not just Jews, to know this rich and glorious secret inside and out, regardless of their background, regardless of their religious standing. The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you; therefore, you can look forward to sharing in God’s glory.” (Colossians 1:26-27). Accordingly, the man who receives Christ as Lord and Saviour develops a consciousness of God. God becomes a living reality in his life. When this happens, God’s Holy Spirit comes to dwell in his heart. He literally takes up residence in his life. As a result, like the Prodigal Son, he is back where he belongs: at home with God. “Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family, citizens of God’s country, and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.” (Ephesians 2:19). You are born again and can now see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3). You can now see clearly the invisible attributes of God. (Romans 1:20). You become mindful of the things of God, as opposed to the things of men. (Matthew 16:23). You now realise you are living with Immanuel, who is “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23). Walking in the Spirit The bible makes a distinction between “living in the Spirit” and “walking in the Spirit.” The difference is similar to that between living with someone but not going out with him, and living with someone and always going everywhere with him. Paul prescribes the latter: “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25). Of course, before you can walk in the Holy Spirit, you have to live in the Holy Spirit. Once the Holy Spirit moves in, he never leaves, but he is such a gentle Spirit that, if we don’t make a point of always interacting with him, he remains silent and we might easily lose consciousness of him. The bible says, in effect, always be aware that God is with you at all times. Involve him in every aspect of your life. Seek his counsel, his protection and his guidance in everything you do. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6). The bible talks of “walking in the Spirit” because walking is progressive. You are going somewhere. It is an educational journey. There is going to be lots of adventure along the way. Amos asks: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). The answer is “No!” If you are to walk in the Holy Spirit, then you would have to be in agreement with him. You have to walk in the ways of God. You have to walk in the light of his word. You have to make his word a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. (Psalm 119:105). Can two walk together unless they are going, at the very least, in the same direction? Again the answer is “No!” God is the destination; he is the Promised Land. Therefore, Jesus must be “the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through (him).” (John 14:6). Mystery of the atonement Who is Jesus? John says Jesus was God: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1). If Jesus was God, then Jesus is God: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13: .Is Jesus God the Son or is he God the Father? Isaiah says the Son is the Father and the Father is the Son. He says unto us a child is born but this child is also the mighty God. Unto us a son is given but this son is also the everlasting Father. (Isaiah 9:6). Where does God the Father begin and God the Son end? Great is the mystery of godliness. (1 Timothy 3:16). Both the Father and the Son are “the Alpha and the Omega; the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 1: .Jesus says to Phillip: “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I say are not my own but are from my Father who lives in me. And he does his work through me. Just believe it- that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.” (John 14:10-11). At one with God If Jesus and the Father are one, the same principle applies to Jesus and the believer. Jesus says: “When I come back to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. (John 14:20). In his prayer for the unity of present and future believers, Jesus asks God that: “they will be of one heart and mind, just as you and I are, Father- that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us.” (John 17:21). In effect, the atonement means the Holy Spirit makes us one with God. Therefore, the believer is enjoined to lose his self-consciousness and to replace this with a God consciousness; so much so that: “Whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Colossians 3:17). When we do this, we find that the Holy Spirit silently overshadows us, with the result that we no longer know where we end and where God begins. David was so focused on God that the psalms he wrote expressed the very sentiments of Jesus: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why do you refuse to help me or even to listen to my groans? (Psalm 22:1). Paul just wrote letters to Timothy, Titus and Philemon; and yet his letters became canons of scripture. John wrote private letters to a chosen lady, and yet the letters became the word of God. In effect, these men had so walked with God you could no longer distinguish where Christ ended and they began. They understood the inheritance of the atonement and were now at one with Christ and with God. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/05/practical-christianity-walking-in-the-spirit-1/ |
THE First Baptist Church, Orogun in Ughelli North local government area of Delta State, has been shut down indefinitely on the orders of the Orogun Traditional Council over an alleged “spiritual cleansing” exercise carried out by the pastor and members of the church. The pastor, Rev Tode Joseph Godspower, was said to have conducted a crusade organised by the church after which himself and members of the church, embarked on a “sweeping exercise” with the intention of sweeping away evil from the community. Enraged by his action, the monarch, Okpara-Uku, (HRM) Akpojotor Epko, invited the cleric in a letter dated, April 15, 2019 under the guise of “discussing issues that will bring progress to the kingdom.” The pastor who is also the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Orogun branch, was reported to have been assaulted by some persons at the palace for “insulting the gods” of the land while he was being grilled the next day by the traditional council. Confirming the ban on the church, a chief from the kingdom, Chief Immanuel Ogobene debunked claims that the pastor was assaulted during his interrogation at the palace, saying, “There was no confrontation or assaulted, he was just warned on his action.” On what transpired at the palace, Chief Ogobene said: “He (pastor) went to the palace with some selected members of his church and was asked why he did what he did, but was tongue tied and couldn’t say anything to defend his action and was warned not to open the church until further notice. “The council will meet and they will deliberate on the shutdown of the church as soon as possible. You have no right to go to a community and start casting away their idols; he does not have that authority “Even if God has revealed something to him, the best thing to do is for him to go to the Okpara- Uku who is the head of the community and tell him. Then the Okpara-Uku will consult his council, deliberate on it before he is permitted to do so or not, but what he did was trespass of activities.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/04/traditional-council-shuts-down-baptist-church-indefinitely-over-cleansing-by-pastor/ |

Abubakar Atiku, the defeated presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party has debunked notions that he was Cameroonian by birth and thus not qualified to contest the election of 23 February, 2019. Atiku who was born in Jada in 1946, in present day Adamawa state, but then part of Northern Cameroon, said he was born by Nigerian parents and therefore ‘a citizen of Nigeria by birth”. According to his response to the All Progressives Congress filing before the Presidential election tribunal, Atiku said his father, Garba Atiku Abdulkadir was a Nigerian by birth who hailed from Wurmo in present day Sokoto State, while the mother, Aisha Kande was also a Nigerian who hailed from Dutse in present day Jigawa State. “The parents of the 1st Petitioner(Atiku) are both Fulani, a community/tribe indigenous to Nigeria”, his lawyers said.. “The birth of the 1st Petitioner in Jada, in present day Adamawa State of Nigeria was occasioned by the movement of his paternal grandfather called Atiku who was an itinerant trader, from Wurmo in present day Sokoto State to Jada in the company of his friend, Ardo Usman. “That in Jada, Atiku, the grandfather of the 1st Petitioner gave birth to Garba who in tum gave birth to the 1st Petitioner and named him after his own father Atiku. “The 1st Petitioner’s mother, Aisha Kande was the grand-daughter of Inuwa Dutse who came to Jada as an itinerant trader too from Dutse in present day Jigawa State. “That all averments concerning Germany, British Cameroons, League of Nations and Plebiscite are false and misleading in relation to the 1st Petitioner and therefore completely irrelevant more so that the 1st Petitioner is a Nigerian by birth within the contemplation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic ofNigeria, 1999 (as amended). “The averments in the aforesaid paragraphs are indeed fabricated, contrived, made in bad faith and designed to embarrass the 1st Petitioner.” Abubakar said that the votes he secured in the presidential election were not wasted votes, and still claimed that he got more votes than President Buhari. To buttress his Nigerian citizenship, Atiku listed his career path and political activities and the awards and honours that he had received. These included his being a civil servant in the Nigerian Customs Service for over 20 years, retiring as a Deputy Director; a politician for about 30 years, who in 1992 contested the Presidential Primaries under the platform of then Social Democratic Party (SDP) alongside the late Chief M.K.O Abiola and Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe. He also mentioned his participation in the 1999 governorship election in Adamawa State in 1999, which he won and the presidential elections of 1999 and 2003, which he won as running mate to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Mentioned also was his being a recipient of the National Honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) and holder of the traditional title holder of Turakin Adamawa from 1982 to 2017 when he was elevated to Wazirin Adamawa. “In 2007, the 1st Petitioner contested Presidential election under the platform of Action Congress (AC) and the 2nd Respondent contested under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP). “In 2014, the 1st Petitioner and the 2nd Respondent contested the Presidential Primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the 3rd Respondent for the 2015 Presidential Elections”. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/04/atiku-i-was-born-by-nigerian-parents-from-sokoto-jigawa/ |

The Zimbabwe government has come under fire after information emerged that it spent thousands of dollars on importing legal wigs from the UK for local judges, with critics lambasting the purchase as a colonial hang-up and a waste of money. The Zimbabwe Independent newspaper reported that the country's Judiciary Service Commission placed an order for 64 horse-hair wigs from Stanley Ley Legal Outfitters in London, at a cost of £1,850 ($2,428) per wig and totaling £118,400 ($155,000). Wigs from the outfitter range in price from £457.50 ($599) for a standard barrister's wig, to £2,495.83 ($3,265) for a judge's ceremonial wig. Stanley Ginsburg, the owner of Stanley Ley, confirmed to CNN that his company had sold wigs to Zimbabwe, but he said the actual number of wigs ordered was "no way near the number" quoted by the Zimbabwe Independent. Nonetheless, lawyers and rights campaigners have expressed anger at the purchase, arguing that the tradition of wearing expensive wigs represents a mismanagement of financial resources, and also fails to improve access to legal services for average Zimbabweans. "The judicial wig (colonial) tradition continues in Zimbabwe with all its costs and controversy, without any meaningful benefit to access to justice," Arnold Tsunga, Africa director at the International Commission of Jurists, wrote on Twitter. Hopewell Chin'ono, a leading Zimbabwean journalist and documentary filmmaker, wrote: "I have argued that this country suffers from a catastrophic mismanagement of resources. How do you explain a government allocating $155,000 for wigs to be bought in England when the same government is failing to buy bandages and betadine for infants in pediatric wards. These are people who shout about sovereignty and anti- colonial rhetoric and yet they are still wearing hideous wigs." Chin'ono said the former colonial powers are "having a laugh" at Zimbabwe, stating: "You can take Zimbabwe out of the empire, but you can't take the empire out of Zimbabwe." On Thursday, a group of United Nations experts warned that the Zimbabwe government's policies aimed at tackling its fiscal deficit were pushing its people deeper into poverty. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2019/4/government-of-zimbabwe-under-fire-after-spending-thousands-of-dollars-to-import-judges-wigs-from-uk.html

I am fully in support of what tinubu or APC leaders are trying to do. You as a politician, must learn to respect party decision first, before any other thing. My advice to APC leaders, is that they should handle this issue carefully, so that it won't cause crisis sha last..last them go talk talk, them go tire! |
A woman who described herself as “ mother of four sons ” have appealed to young ladies to stop wearing leggings which, she argues, are capable of inflaming male passion and lead men into sin . Maryann White, who describes herself as a “ Catholic mum,” made her opinion known via a letter published in the University of Notre Dame student newspaper , The Observer. “ I’m just a Catholic mother of four sons with a problem that only girls can solve : leggings ,” she wrote. When carpeted , White insists that she is “ not trying to insult anyone or infringe upon anyone ’ s rights .” However, she recalls an incident where she came across “ a group of young women , all wearing very snug - fitting leggings and all wearing short - waisted tops ” during a Mass service. “ Some of them truly looked as though the leggings had been painted on them … Leggings are so naked , so form fitting, so exposing . “ Could you think of the mothers of sons the next time you go shopping and consider choosing jeans instead ?” she wails in the letter . Meanwhile, Yahoo UK Style reports that the letter has been heavily criticised by students at the University of Notre Dame , with many respondents taking to Twitter to assert their right to wear whatever they love . What’ s more, a University of Notre Dame - based student group , Irish 4 Reproductive Health, has launched “ Leggings Pride Day” as a response to the letter , calling for students to don their leggings in protest. They have even started the hashtag #LeggingsDayND . These are some of the responses to White’s lamentation: If you raise boys that can only treat women as people when they are dressed a certain way, something has gone terribly wrong . This reminds me of the “ if you ’ re wearing a skirt you ’ re asking to be raped ” mentality . Abakaliki – THE member representing Ezza North /Ishielu federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Anayo Nwonu Monday expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would produce the next speaker of the Green Chambers. Mr Nwonu who addressed journalists during the last rerun of the state Assembly election in his constituency explained that PDP being minority in the 9th Assembly will not affect legislative processes . He however was optimistic that the party will regain it’s lost seats in the National Assembly. He said, “National politics and legislative politics are quite different, being a second term law maker, that we reduced in number will not really affect any legislative processes in the green chambers. For now we are already shopping for who will become the next speaker and I know Peoples Democratic Party PDP is the main people to decide who will be the speaker of the 9th Assembly . “In fact let me tell you before the quarter of the year as we are being sworn in , PDP will definitely gain back their number”. According to him, “what PDP is saying is to council the Presidential election, they are not saying that the whole elections should be counciled, the governors are congratulating INEC where they did well but blame them where they didn’t do well. “Everyone in Nigeria know that the presidential elections was a completely rigged election. But I pray PDP will go to court and take their mandate back” he said. “My people are not agreive, the point is that Ezza north people understand the politic of the day so they are always political conscious, what makes it look as if there is always a problem or fight in my place is the case of outsiders trying to throw stone on a class house. “But as a lawmaker we are trying to stop that, what happened in the last elections will not repeat itself in Izzi north, in fact in the entire constituencies.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/03/pdp-will-produce-the-next-speaker-of-house-of-representatives-ebonyi-reps-member/ |

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has described the 2019 general elections as an ‘expensive joke’. Falana, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, urged Nigerians to organize themselves by going back to the drawing board if the country stands a chance at having credible elections. “This country spent over N250 billion from public purse on this useless enterprise apart from what each of the governors and political party spent, which is more than 250 billion. If we want to get out of the crisis of monumental dimension, we need to go back to the drawing table, beyond the two major political parties. Nigerians must organize because this expensive joke cannot continue.” On the issue of reported violence across the country, Falana believes that no matter the amount of preaching, electoral violence cannot end, except there is an effort by the human rights community and the electoral offences tribunal to follow through the cases after elections. “We have close to 40 million illiterate adults, the majority of them are roaming the street. In such an environment, you could preach till the second coming of Christ, but that will not stop people from getting involved in electoral offences and other acts of criminality. All those who have been caught disrupting our elections are agents of politicians. The police and security agencies have arrested in the last 6 months, over 2000 electoral offenders, what do we do with them, once the elections are over, our attention will shift elsewhere. An electoral offences tribunal are to take over these cases like the EFCC or ICPC and investigate them thoroughly and charge those who have been indicted, but the suggestion was rejected. From the human rights community, we are trying to partner with the police and the INEC to ensure that we can assemble young lawyers to take on the prosecution of the cases of behalf of INEC. Otherwise, everyone will go back to business as usual as soon as possible.” Falana also suggested that the option of ‘E- Voting’ would be problematic, citing examples of its use during the elections of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, and the Nigeria Bar Association NBA. “Electronic voting is not the solution with the state of impunity and recklessness in the country; it is difficult. The EFCC is now investigating what we now call ‘E- Rigging’ in the NBA. The E-Voting system would be problematic because our political class is rarely prepared for credible elections,” he maintained. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2019/3/human-rights-lawyer-femi-falana-describes-the-2019-general-elections-as-an-expensive-joke.html
