Abuja - Nigeria's military on Thursday said they had killed as many as 38 Boko Haram fighters during counter-insurgency operations in the country's north-east.
Army spokesman Colonel Muhammad Dole said troops on patrol foiled a planned attack on local residents and a military camp in Damboa, Borno state, in the early hours, and inflicted “heavy casualties”.
“While the encounter lasted, 38 Boko Haram terrorists were killed and some fled with various degrees of injuries,” the officer said in an emailed statement, adding that three vehicles were destroyed.
One of the vehicles was found to have cylinders and improvised explosive devices. Weapons and ammunition, including machine guns, were also recovered, he said.
One soldier was killed and two others were injured in the encounter, he said.
“Combined ground troops and Nigerian Air Force aircraft are tactically pursuing the fleeing terrorists in the ongoing operation in the general area of Damboa and surrounding villages,” Dole added.
Damboa is nearly 90 kilometres south-west of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.
Boko Haram, deemed a terrorist organisation by the United States, has been fighting a bloody insurgency in Nigeria's north since 2009, attacking schools which follow a “Western” curriculum and churches as well as military and police targets.
Nigeria's government in May last year imposed a state of emergency in Borno and two other neighbouring states, Yobe and Adamawa, in an attempt to stem the violence, which has claimed thousands of lives.
Parliament approved the extension of special measures late last year, although the focus of attacks and military operations has largely shifted to remote, rural areas of Borno near the border with Cameroon.

Following an outcry against a 'rape joke', he posted on his Facebook wall on Saturday, popular comedian, Basketmouth (Bright Okpocha), on Sunday apologised for any misunderstanding the joke may have caused.
The rape joke which was 'liked' by over five thousand people had compared dating white girls to dating African women and appeared to recommend rape for members of the latter group who failed to give into a man's lustful advances after nine dates, which include dinners and shopping sprees.

The joke was, however, not received well by several fans of the comedian across the continent.
A Zimbabwean blogger, Barbara Mhangami, in an open letter to the comedian on her blog ( http://onbarbsbookswriting. .com), pointed out that the fact the comedian made a funny joke about rape made him a huge problem that affects half of the world's population.
"Rape is not funny and if it elicits laughter, which it did in some of your fans,then this is a sign of depravity and a warning to all women that we are not safe among men, even the ones who purport to love us," Mhangami said.
However, other fans of the comedian, commenting on his Facebook page, deem the joke as harmless, attacking those who criticise it.
In his retraction, also posted on his Facebook wall, Basketmouth, pointing out that he had a daughter, a wife and a mother, insisted that he would never in a thousand lifetimes promote rape.
"I broadcasted a joke that many clearly misunderstood and have found offensive and I sincerely apologise. The intention however was to highlight an unfortunate trend and the ridiculously flawed comparison between money and the worth of a woman," the comedian explained.
Addressing his "apology" to all women, "the ones that make our lives colorful, the ones we owe our lives literally, our pride, our money choppers, the true stronger vessels," Basketmouth said, "this is me, Bright Onyekwere Okpocha saying, I no dey crase to promote rape? (sic)"

The governor was on his way to receive Nigeria’s vice president who visited Edo on a private visit.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo on Monday in Benin debunked rumours that he was being hospitalised after a traffic accident that occurred on December 28, 2013.
Mr. Oshiomhole was reacting to media reports which claimed that he was lying critically ill in hospital.
The governor, while addressing members of the State Executive Council, said he was not hospitalised after the accident involving his official vehicle and a J5 bus.
“The rumours of being hospitalised and under intensive care were the figment of the imagination of my detractors,” he said.
The governor said the accident occurred around 10.a.m. on December 28 close to Ewu Town.
He said he was on his way to Benin from his village, Iyamho, to receive Vice President Namadi Sambo, when the J5 bus conveying tomatoes, veered off the road and rammed into his official vehicle.
The governor said none of the occupants of the official vehicle, including himself, was injured.
He said that though the vice president was on a private visit, he was obliged, as the state chief executive, to receive him at the airport.
Mr. Oshiomhole thanked God for saving his life, saying in spite of the accident, he was still able to receive the vice president, who was in the state to felicitate with Tony Anenih on his birthday.
