Why? Do you know that first (Experimental) Local Government (County) in Nigeria was Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area? Sadly: It may be deleted from Nigeria history as we don't seem to be proud of it. Do you know that the second highest Slave deport in West Africa (The first was in Badagri, Lagos) was established in Ikot Abasi in the year 1795? and the famous Bridge of no Return was built in Ikot Abasi that same year? Sadly: In Goggle it is recorded as if the Bridge stands in Imo State along Imo River. Do you know that the decision and the plan for the Amalgamation of Northern and Southern States into one Country Named Nigeria was taken at the Brick House at Ikot Abasi by Sir Lord Lugard and other Colonial Leaders in the present of all regional Head then? Sadly: That Center (The Amalgamation house which is still standing in Ikot Abasi till today) was not recognized by the federal government when Nigeria Amalgamation history was Celebrated in 2014, why? we were Silence, we seemed not to be proud of it. Do you know that Queen Elizabeth the 2nd Ship Came into the Eastern Nigeria through the Eniong River in the Present ITU Local Government Area?, and that till today the deck she claimed to up land is still at ITU ? Sadly: It's not our Business, such History is forgotten and such place is not worth a tourist Center. Do you know that the first leper colony in Nigeria region was established by the Presbyterian Church and Mary Slassor Hospital at Obot ITU and still there till today? Do you know that the first telephone service station in west Africa was at ITU? Do you know that because of our riches in Forestry Few Italians in the 18th Century collaborated with our Portuguese trade partners to esterblised and Italian Forest reserve at ITU and it is still there till today? Sadly; All these does not interest our Generation and it is not even worth a tourist site. Do you know that Mary Slassor spend More of her life span in Use Ikot Oku in old ITU LGA now Ibiono Ibom LGA, Akwa Ibom State more than she lived in any where on Earth? Do you know that she died in Use Ikot Oku and her House and her grave Monument is still there till today? Do you even know that the names of the Towns in Akwa Ibom that Mary Slassor affected are writen in the Scottish Currency? Sadly: Calabar has taken that Glory, Her Monument built by Cross River State Government is a tourist Center where Calabar Canival trend stop and Dance. Yet there is no major street in Akwa Ibom named after Mary Slassor. Do You that the name Itu given the a Local Government Area in the then Cross River State and now Akwa Ibom State was derived from a Portuguese/ English Trade Center called International Trade Union? Sadly: it is only found in an old book in a Dieing Library in Calabar and no one from here is bold enough to put in in the Internet so it could be googled. Do you know that the famous "Aba Women Riot" of 1929 actually originated from a Market called Ukam Market in Ikot Abasi and so many women lost their lives in the killing ordered by the Colonial Division Officer in Ikot Abasi, do you know that it was an Ikot Abasi woman that led that riot? do you know that no Woman actually died in the street of Aba and that female traders in Aba only did a sympathy walk? Sadly; Aba ,is more popular in the glory of that History because we just don't care Even the mock graves of the 500 dead women in Ikot Abasi is not worth a tourist site to be promoted. BUT do you know that tourism is a major Economic driver on Earth today? Do you know that Akwa Ibom Citizens travel out on tour to so many lesser historical sites around the world? Why? Why? Why? Are we not proud of our history? why can't we turn our Historical sites to tourist Sites? Why? do we allow tribalism and Political Influence to rub us of our Heritage? The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), on Tuesday, arrested seven persons allegedly operating illegal employment agencies to defraud job seekers in Abuja, the nation's capital. Director of Outdoor Advertisement and Signage (DOAS), Dr Babagana Adam, said the syndicate was defrauding people under the guise of giving them jobs. He spoke while parading the suspects before journalists in Abuja. The suspects He said, "They print job posters, promising a monthly salary of N40,000, staff bus and accommodation while asking interested applicants to call specific phone numbers. "What the cartel does is to paste illegal adverts, stickers on available spaces along FCT roads, bridges and infrastructures, calling applicants to apply for the non-existing jobs only to initiatie their victims into their gang to defraud, steal and sometimes rape innocent residents across the territory. "I am sure you can see several of such illegal adverts along the streets. We have continuously informed the general public through radio jingles, television as well as the newspapers, to ignore such posters because they are not only illegal but an avenue to defraud job seekers." Adam stressed that applicants should note that only the DOAS is constitutionally empowered by the FCT Administration to take care of signage and advertisements. He warned residents against fake advertisements in the territory. The DOAS boss added that the cartel was traced to Zone 6, Primary School, opposite FCT Development Control by a combined team of DOAS Officers. He said the suspects would be handed over to the police for prosecution. Source:http://saharareporters.com/2020/07/15/fcta-arrests-illegal-employment-syndicate-abuja |

When militiamen recently invaded communities such as Maigoge , Maihula and Tunga in the Bali Local Government Area including Ananum and Akate communities in the Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State , many lives were lost and thousands displaced . The attacks have continued unabated and the displaced persons are now taking refuge in several internally displaced persons camps across the state . But life inside the camps has not been conducive, with the inmates taking turns to sleep due to the inadequate space and sleeping materials . In one of the camps at St John ’s College , Mutum -Biyu , located along Mutum - Biyu -Garba Chede Road in Gassol Local Government Area , one could easily mistake the population there for a village market , an annual festival or a church convention. The difference was that as one approached the camp , the mood of the people showed they were downhearted; the cries of children permeated the atmosphere . According to the Very Rev Fr George Dogo , the camp coordinator and Parish Priest of St John ’ s Catholic Church , Mutum -Biyu , which owns the school , there are over 13 , 000 residents taking refuge in the facility. Dogo added that the refugees were from 22 communities in Bali Local Government Area and one community from Donga Local Government Areas . According to a register obtained at the camp , the facility accommodates 5 ,804 men , 8 ,462 women and 3 ,742 children, bringing the total to 18 ,008 . Dogo , however , said about 5,000 only registered at the camp but were now staying with family and friends in the town and other places . The cleric decried the challenges of having to cater for the refugees and called for help . He said , “The number ( of refugees ) there is overwhelming . When they first came, we accommodated them in the church , but a day after , the population became too much , so we moved some of them here , while others are still staying in the church . “ Some registered and then moved into town and are now staying with relations and friends . Some who are a bit financially buoyant have rented apartments in the town and moved there with their families . As of Wednesday , the number we have in the camp and in the church is slightly above 13 ,000 people . “Feeding them is not a child’ s play . Many of them , including children, have no clothes and sleeping materials . In fact, they have made some arrangements whereby some sleep between 6 pm and 10 pm , others then sleep from 10 pm to 2am ; they alternate the sleeping hours until everyone has got some sleep . “We are also facing the challenges of food and water . I want to appeal to the government and well- meaning individuals to come to the aid of the IDPs .” Findings showed that 298 people had been killed during the crisis and 509 injured across the 22 communities in Bali Local Government Area, as well as one community in Donga Local Government Area. Communities most affected by the crisis in Bali council area include Maihula , Yelwa Kutumba , Sabon Dale , Wurbo , Kudi , Gazebo , and Taka - Lafia . At the IDPs camp at St John ’s College , the women leader , Evangelist Elizabeth Kwaghnjua , said life in the camp was terrible . She said , “Look at our number here and compare it with the number of classrooms . Even if 100 people sleep in one room , which is not possible , some will still not have space to sleep . We have just two blocks of 10 classrooms and we are over 13 ,000 in this camp . All of us can ’t go to sleep at the same time . “What we normally do is to alternate sleeping hours . Most times , we allow the children and the elderly to sleep at night while the young ones keep vigil and sleep in the daytime . “Many people trekked to the camp from long distances , so they didn ’t bring sleeping materials . At the point of running , people only cared about saving their lives . It is unfortunate that only the church is taking care of us here . I urge the governor to also come and see what we are passing through here . Imagine children sleeping on bare floor in this rainy season . It’s also not funny forcing some children to stay awake up to 1 am just to wait for their time to sleep . Some have actually been acquainted with the practice, but I can tell you , it’s not funny .” A community leader who is also now an IDP , Zakaria Akaater , said since he was displaced three days ago , the state government had not done enough to cater for their needs . He said , “How do you feed these people ? It’s rainy season and people , especially children, need to sleep indoors to prevent mosquito bites , but there is no place for them to sleep . “Last week , my daughter - in- law ran from Ananum village in Donga to meet us in Bali and we were also attacked and displaced . At least , 113 houses were destroyed during an attack on Ananum on June 6. Fifteen people were killed . “I don’t know whether the government is aware of this but it will interest you to that we share information and data as community leaders , and from the data I have , 5 ,288 men were displaced at Ananum , as well as 4 ,710 women and 11 ,883 children. We are appealing to the government to end this crisis because it’s killing our economy .” Another refugee who is a student of Government Day Secondary School, Maihula , Miss Grace Daa , told our correspondent that she trekked for three days to get to the camp . Daa , who is waiting to sit the West African Senior School Certificate Examination after the COVID - 19 pandemic , said apart from inadequate sleeping space which had forced them to share sleeping hours, personal hygiene was also a big challenge. She said , “ For us women , we don’t have sanitary pads during menstruation . Many of us have infections . Our population has overwhelmed the school toilets and many are using nearby bushes . It’s really bad.” A community leader , Chief Temeke Gabriel , lamented that instead of finding ways of ending the crisis , the state government was busy preparing for local government election . However , the Permanent Secretary , Taraba State Emergency Management Agency , Mr Nulvaga Dan -Habu , said the state government was doing enough to cater for the welfare of all IDPs . He said , “Even this morning ( Wednesday ) , relief materials have been carried from Jalingo to Gassol and Bali local government areas for distribution to the IDPs . “We have desk officers in each of the local government areas who report to us . The desk officers know where the IDPs are and I am sure that the relief materials will reach them , even in Mutum - Biyu and Gassol local government areas as well. ” “Recently , we evacuated IDPs from Kurmi to Chanchanji and provided relief materials to those in Bali and Dan - Anacha . What we are doing now is to see how the IDPs can return to their homes because government resources are limited and cannot satisfy the needs of the displaced people .” Source: https://punchng.com/double-jeopardy-inside-taraba-idps-camp-where-displaced-nigerians-compete-for-food-sleeping-space/ Lalasticla |
As Nigeria ’s confirmed COVID - 19 cases surpassed 12 ,000 and the death toll hit 342 on Sunday, Presidential Task Force on COVID - 19 has said the country may just be starting to experience the epidemic . The PTF lamented that Nigerians were avoiding being tested ; a situation he said was responsible for the low testing ratio to the population . This was made known at the House of Representatives on Monday when members of the PTF appeared before a joint committee of the House to account for the funds allocated and donated to the fight against the pandemic . Chairman of the PTF , who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation , Boss Mustapha , expressed uncertainties over the pandemic , urging the lawmakers to help extend the campaign to the grass roots . He said , “ I must say that the virus is still very dangerous . We have not peaked ; we have to meticulously plan . There is no timeline ; that is why money is not being thrown at it just because it has been released . “We don ’t know how long this will take us . Even the budget that the National Coordinator mentioned is for a period of six months. We do not know how long it will take us . But by the grace of God , we shall overcome . “There is no medicine or vaccine for this . The humanity is simply overwhelmed by it. Everything has been turned upside down . Today , we are all masked up. We never used to know it like this . Please , honourable members , there is a lot you can do for us ; a lot of legislative actions that can be taken , looking into the future . We are dealing with it today ; the next pandemic must not catch us unawares . We must prepare for it.” Earlier, the Also , the Director General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control , Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu , while responding to a question on whether the PTF had projected a figure for cases to know when Nigeria has reached the peak of the pandemic , stated that the country was just entering it. Ihekweazu also dismissed the claims that the NCDC had spent millions on text messages to sensitise Nigerians . He said , “We are still in the middle of a very , very bad outbreak . In fact, it is most likely that we are at the beginning of a very bad outbreak . This is the honest truth . And as we dig into the details of what we have done , I really crave your indulgence to please , bear in mind that we do this work together , because we really have a collective responsibility to our people . “The SMS story was of course not true. We will never spend that amount . In fact, all the SMS everybody receives are free , courtesy of the large telcos in the country . We have not paid a dime for SMS. Right now , we have tested less than 100 ,000 . In the country at the moment, we have capacity to test over 200 ,000 .” The lawmakers , however , berated the Accountant - General of the Federation , Ahmed Idris , for not attending the hearing . In his remarks, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts and leader of the joint committees , Wole Oke , said , “The only person that is not here , that I am worried about , is the Accountant -General of the Federation , who is the chief accountant of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , who should tell us the total sum that we have realised. The gentlemen here can only speak to what has been released to them .” https://punchng.com/covid-19-pandemic-just-beginning-in-nigeria-ptf/ |
