Wstation: I went to a wedding in Owerri sometime in January. If you had seen the selection of beautiful girls presented to us to pick from, you would be shocked. Detailednews: AMAC Launches Gender-Based Violence Campaign to Sensitize Women, to Embark on Community Outreach
The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has launched a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) sensitisation and orientation campaign aimed at protecting women and girls and creating greater awareness of their rights and available support services.
The campaign, which was unveiled during the AMAC Women Gender-Based Violence and Orientation Drive, also featured the announcement of an emergency intervention helpline to provide confidential channels for reporting cases requiring urgent intervention and appropriate referrals.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser on Women Affairs to the AMAC Executive Chairman, Hon. Loveth Izekor, said the campaign was a further demonstration of the council’s commitment to the safety, dignity and empowerment of women.
Izekor recalled that the council’s Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), FCT, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, had on September 16, 2026, unveiled the Voice of AMAC Women initiative during the launch of the LADDER Initiative.
She said the new campaign was building on that commitment through the rollout of the AMAC Emergency Intervention Helpline and a comprehensive GBV sensitisation programme across all 12 wards of the council.
According to her, the campaign, tagged “Unite to Protect: Empowering AMAC Women Through Knowledge and Action,” would take the message directly to communities, markets and households.
She explained that her team would visit all 12 wards in collaboration with Ward and Community Coordinators, traditional rulers, Royal Mothers and religious leaders to educate residents on the prevention of gender-based violence and the appropriate steps to take when cases occur.
Izekor stressed that the fight against GBV could not be left to government alone, urging traditional and religious leaders, community leaders and residents to play active roles in breaking the culture of silence surrounding abuse.
She said the council, through its technical partner, Gender Agender, in collaboration with AMAC Broadcast Radio and other media partners, would educate women and girls on the various forms of abuse, their rights, available protection mechanisms and safe ways of seeking help.
She added that the council was also working with security, legal, health and community partners to strengthen intervention, referral and survivor-support mechanisms.
The Special Adviser urged residents to save and share the official emergency helpline, 09074475106, within their communities.
“If you see abuse, do not look away. If you know someone in danger, do not remain silent. If a woman or child needs help, help them find help,” she said.
She said the initiative would contribute to building a stronger support system covering prevention, emergency intervention, legal assistance, healthcare, counselling and survivor support.
Izekor commended the Executive Chairman, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, for his continued commitment to the welfare, safety and empowerment of women in AMAC.
She also called on women and girls across the council’s 12 wards not to suffer in silence, assuring them that their dignity and safety mattered. She concluded with the campaign’s message: “Break the Silence. Call for Help. Unite to Protect.”

This afternoon, the above news was pushed to the frontpage of Nairaland and I was amazed and disappointed at the ignorance of majority of the comments that greeted the news. I am disappointed at the ignorance and arrogance of the guys on Nairaland.
It is not only appalling but a sad indication that whether we like it or not, the so-called #OlodoUprising is here and indeed a bomb expected to detonate at any time in the country.
It is sad that despite that we are in the era of AI, folks can not consult this readily available tool to seek what "referred visa category" means before rushing to embarrass themselves and their families in the public arena.
Anyway, I have decided to create this post for the purpose of those who may want to know the meaning of the policy and its implication for Nigeria and its citizens.
Referred Visa Category: What does it means?
In Tanzania, the “Referred Visa Category” refers to a special group of nationalities and persons whose visa applications cannot be issued routinely or on arrival. They require prior special clearance/approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration (mainland Tanzania) or the Commissioner of Immigration (Zanzibar) before a visa can be granted.
Key features 1. Applicants from these countries cannot get a visa on arrival.
2. The application is “referred” (sent for higher-level review and security/administrative clearance) to immigration headquarters.
3. Processing takes longer than a standard e-visa or ordinary visa.
4. Approval is not automatic.
Who falls under the Referral Visa Category Nationals of specific countries (the official list is reviewed and can change). Recent official and embassy sources commonly include: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Chad, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic), Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Somaliland, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen, and others.
What is the implication of a country being being removed from Referral Visa Category When a country is removed from Tanzania’s Referral (or Referred) Visa Category, the main implication is that its nationals no longer need special prior clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration (or the Zanzibar equivalent). They move to the ordinary/standard visa process.
Practical effects for travellers from that country
1. No more referral clearance required — Applications no longer go through the extra headquarters-level security/administrative review that previously applied.
2. Faster and simpler process — Travellers can apply for a standard e-visa or ordinary visa through the normal online portal (or at designated points) without the longer referral timeline. The previous advice to apply at least two months in advance and wait for special approval no longer applies.
3. Still need a visa (in most cases) — Removal from the Referral Category does not make the country visa-free. Citizens still generally need to obtain a regular visa before travel or (where available) on arrival, following standard rules and fees.
4. Visa on arrival may become available — Depending on the specific nationality and current rules, they may now be eligible for visa on arrival or ordinary e-visa options that were previously blocked.
5. No need to delay travel plans for clearance — Travellers are no longer strongly advised against booking flights or accommodation until special approval is received.
6. Host/invitation letter requirements ease — The stricter supporting documents and security bond often demanded for referral cases are typically no longer mandatory (though a clear purpose of visit is still expected).
IS IT A GOOD OR BAD NEWS FOR NIGERIA AND ITS CITIZENS
It is good news for the nationals of the country that has been removed from Tanzania’s Referral (Referred) Visa Category.
Why it is positive?
Travel becomes simpler and faster. Citizens no longer need the extra special clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration (or Zanzibar equivalent).
They move to the ordinary/standard visa process (e-visa or regular application), which has shorter processing times and fewer extra requirements.
There is less risk of delays or uncertainty caused by the referral review.
Travellers can book flights and accommodation with more confidence, without the previous strong advice to wait for special approval first.
It signals improved bilateral relations or reduced security concerns regarding travellers from that country.
What it does not mean It does not make the country visa-free. Most people still need to apply for and obtain a normal visa. Entry is still subject to normal immigration rules and the final decision of the officer at the port of entry.
When Tanzania removed Nigeria from the Referral Visa Category, it was widely reported as a positive step that made travel easier for Nigerians while keeping standard visa requirements in place.

To be fair to him he told to come over with a student visa but I was too desperate to wait for student pass. June of 2016 I left Nigeria and arrived in Kuala Lumpour after 18hrs flight with 2hrs of transit in Abu Dhabi in the UAE.
I spent 2days at the airport before I was finally stamped in to Malaysia because I was told I will needed immigration clearance which was false.
My problem started from the airport. Finally, I took a taxi to my cousin's house and I was welcomed very well, I felt relieved and I was like the stress is over, but I never knew it was just the beginning.
So, after dinner I slept off and woke at 12noon, took my bath and we spent some time catching up and they were giving me some street orientation lol.
My first shock was when I told them I want ed to go out and take a walk around the neighborhood and I was not allowed to go because, I will be arrested and I was confused. For what reason? I asked they told me that I actually came in with a fake Social Visa, I couldn't believe it.
So, I stayed indoors for 2 good weeks and I became frustrated and went out one day, evening thing was fine nobody or police harassed me. I went out the following day and I saw a football field mostly Africans playing football and having fun ,I was very happy and asked them if I can become a member,they welcome into the team. I bought my new football boot started training with them.
Till one day I went out to join them in a bus, for an away match. As soon as I stepped out from my estate in Damasara Damai, Selangor. I saw a police car drove past the junction and I was scared they might stop me but, they didn't stop at that point, they allowed me to get to the junction first and they drove very fast made a turn at the traffic light and was coming towards me with full speed.
I was so scared I had to run for my life they chased me till in got back into my estate for safety which I later found out it was a big mistake again.
The team was ready to move and I was absent my phone started ringing nonstop I told my coach what happened and he said I should stay indoors for few minutes,then I can come out ,the police must have gone.
