Gunmen stormed the St. Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra. An eyewitness said on Sunday that the gunmen went into the church during the 5:45 am mass and identified a particular man and shot him. He said that the gunmen later went on a rampage and shot at the remaining worshippers numbering over 100. Scores of people were killed in the church while other critically injured worshippers died on the way to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. The source, however, said the priest of the church was not wounded in the incident. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Garba Umar, confirmed the incidence, adding that more details would be given after investigations. When it seems that the Naira is appreciating gradually against the US dollars, its unfortunately that the US embassy in Nigeria has raised thier fees from the formal 54,400 Nigerian naira to 59,200 Nigerian Naira. The benchmark rate used previously for this was using 1USD=340. But I can authoritatively confirm that it has been raised to 1USD=370.What could have caused this sudden increment, even at the period when naira is appreciating, against dollars |

Hakeem Balogun, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, says different reasons are responsible for the extreme vetting Nigerians face during entry into the USBalogun, in an interview in Washington, added that the President Donald Trump’s travel ban did not affect Nigerians. “The executive ban on immigration does not affect Nigerians. Whatever must have taken place regarding visa issuance, vetting at the airports, it’s all normal. “All these things have been on even before President Trump. Let’s get one thing well. That you are issued visa is not a guarantee that you will end up wherever you’re going. “It’s a global thing; it’s not just United States. Even with us in Nigeria, we issue a visa to you here in the Nigerian Embassy. “There is no guarantee that you will get in when you get to Murtala Muhammed Airport or when you get to Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport. “The final authority is the man at the point of entry – immigration officers there. For instance, you can come to the Embassy here, we ask for all the things you need to get the visa. “How much do you have that we feel will be enough for you to stay in Nigeria for the period you’re going. “May be as at that time, you were able to show us evidence that you have a thousand dollars which we feel will be enough for you to stay in Nigeria. “By the time you get to Murtala Muhammed Airport, the man at that end there asked you, all you have to show to him is 100 dollars, definitely, he might turn you back, and that’s normal. Balogun also said Nigerians are restricted from entering the US because they failed to meet other required procedures. “Then there are other things. What manner of visa did you collect to come to the United States? “For instance, a pregnant woman who comes to the United States on visiting visa will probably be turned back at the point of entry because she does not have a medical visa. “You are coming in on a visiting visa and the immigration man sees you pregnant. Naturally, he will turn you back. “Even if you have the medical visa, they want to know if you have medical insurance; do you have you medical documents for you to be able to come and use their medical facilities here. “So these are issues. Nigeria is not being singled out. We are not one of those countries that have been mentioned. We are definitely not one of them. |

The Federal Government will protect and reward whistle-blowers who provide information that leads to the recovery of stolen funds or assets, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has reiterated. In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday, the Minister said the Federal Government will protect the identity of all whistle-blowers, whether in the public or the private sector, and also ensure that the information they provide is kept secret. ”For those who may have suffered any backlash as a result of the information they provide, their cases will be reviewed and appropriate mitigating actions taken,” he said. Alhaji Mohammed said the assurance followed the presentations made to the Presidential Assets Recovery Committee by concerned citizens and groups about the safety of whistle-blowers. ”Whistle-blowers have nothing to fear, because the committee has put in place the necessary measures to safeguard those who give useful information. As a matter of fact, whistle-blowers have everything to gain and nothing to lose,” he said. The Minister said any whistle-blower whose information leads to the recovery of up to 1 billion Naira will receive 5% of the amount; that the reward for any amount between 1 and 5 billion Naira will be 5% for the first 1 billion Naira and 4% of the remaining 4 billion Naira, and that any amount over 5 billion Naira will attract 2.5% reward. ”For example, if a whistle-blower provides information leading to the recovery of 10 billion Naira, he or she will receive 5% of the first 1 billion Naira, 4% of the next 4 billion Naira and 2.5% of the remaining 5 billion Naira. ”What we have done by making this information public is to reassure potential whistle-blowers that the plan to reward is real. We recently condemned the xenophobia attacks in South Africa,targeted mostly on the African migrants,including other nationals.It kept giving us a disturbing effects,and the questions that kept coming into our minds was,that why should Africans be killing their African brothers? That why should the hatred graduated to the levels that made people of the same colors,killing and maiming their brothers from the same continent.It becomes more saddening that people from the same country,"Nigeria" could repeat the same devilish scenario that we all condemned and castigated few weeks back. Our love for each other in this great country would continue to go on decline,as long that we consider ourselves as people of different tribes and of different ethnicity,rather than value each other as one Nigerian,one people. The latest fight between Hausa and their host in Ile-Ife,shows conclusively that United Nigeria project is a pie in the sky. Its terribly disheartening that we have failed to recognize ourselves firstly as a Nigerian,but put more emphasizes on the tribe or ethnic group we individually belongs,invariably we can unequivocally inferred that we are sitting on keg of gunpowder,as crisis like this will continue to bedeviled us. ABUJA—THE Senate, yesterday, cancelled its proposed trip to South Africa following the return of xenophobic attacks on Africans, including Nigerians, who suffered injuries and had their property destroyed. The decision of the Senate to cancel the journey was sequel to a closed door meeting, yesterday, before plenary. Briefing plenary after the meeting, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided, said the cancellation became imperative to avoid multiple delegations to the Southern Africa nation. He said: “On our trip to South Africa, we noted that the House of Representatives insists on going to South Africa independently. ‘’We thought we could lead a single and harmonized delegation of the National Assembly to avoid the embarrassment of multiple delegations. The Senate, therefore, decided to pull out to allow the House delegation to proceed.” It would be recalled that the Senate had on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, resolved to dispatch a delegation of the upper chamber on a parliamentary diplomatic mission to the parliament of South Africa to register the nation’s displeasure over the resurgence of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in that country and to dialogue with their South African counterparts on how to end the perennial attacks. The resolution was sequel to a motion by Senator Rose Oko (PDP, Cross River North), entitled: Resurgence of Xenophobic Attacks and Extra-judicial Killings of Nigerians in South Africa. Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, had announced his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, as leader of the delegation. Others named on the aborted delegation were Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan; the Chief Whip, Senator Sola Adeyeye; Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Shehu Sani; Senator Stella Oduah; Senator Magnus Abe; and Senator Shaba Lafiaji.
