When I was to do my Internship, I wanted to work at a Teaching Hopital because I wanted to be in the academic environment so I can practice and learn more. there were very few slots at the teaching hospitals. I waited almost a year before giving in to the volunteer job they call 'supernumerary' at a Teaching hospital because I could not bear the thot of not doing the Internship within the 2 year limit. Supernumerary simply means you don't get paid but don't get treated differently from someone who gets paid. That is how I completed my internship. I only supported myself with private practice that I did when i was not on call and some family support that I had to solicit for.

Its so painfully sad things have degenerated to this level. "Supernumerary internship"!! This is a blackmail and a fraud against young doctors at a time legislators are placing themselves on (usually) obscene stipends and pensions for doing part time jobs in legislative houses.

For some who left med school a little while back, it is a ridiculously absurd concept if not a criminal abdication of payment for work done in a country where medical interns are paid entitlements.

Meanwhile, you are not even sure of when the next locum opportunity will present. We need to be more forthcoming with these facts so that ambitious young doctors just leaving school do not derail. A young doctor making 120k in Nigeria I think has more prospect of a successful career and comfortable retirement.

Postgraduate trainign in the UK is not really available if you are a fresh Nigerian graduate unless you happen to have British citizenship.
The new visa rules mean your passport will be stamped 'unable to work as a doctor in training'
The best you can get is locums which pay very well i no go lie but for how long you wan do am?
Scotland does not have more opportunities for training contrary to whatever you may hear. The same immigration restritions apply. You can work but you can't train. The equivalent of working as an M.O. in Naija instead of a Reg.
If you do manage to get into the locums, you will get £35 to £45 per hour, much more than those of us in training.

35-45 quid an hour? Those must be the lucky ones. I hear its commonly 25-29quid an hr.

I think your best bet will be to take up job with a private set up and build a clientele and recognition over a few years and thereafter who knows you might be the owner of the next EKO corp . Or you could go to the surburb with a budget. Of course you can always go for residency if age and family/social responsibility allows. Even then what happens when you get out and you dont have the clientelle?
