EDO STATE: IJAW AT GELEGELE ARE TENANT TO THE BENIN PEOPLE That Gelegele is a Bini community is a long settled issue. There are established, verifiable administrative inquiries by the then Midwest State Government and judgments from the High Court up to the Supreme Court in Lagos giving authority and power to the Binis over the land occupied by our forbears for centuries. Our claim to Gelegele and environs is neither fictional nor adventurous. The area was incontrovertibly founded by a Bini Prince Ekaladerhan who escaped a royal death decree over 10 centuries ago particularly Ughoton Princess Kobe from Ughoton founded Gelegele after previous attempts to inhabit the swampy terrain failed the name Gelegele derived from the exclamation: “Gelegele emwan khian evbo” Our investigation showed that the first Ijaw man from undoubted history to setle in Gelegele was one Feti who suffered a misadventure in the near sea where torrential waves swept away his makeshift .home about 100 years ago. He obtained permission from one Okunseri, the then priest of Ughoton, to settle there under traditional oath of allegiance. As time went on the Ijaw population in Gelegele grew but continually paid homage to the Binis nay the Oba of Benin, through Ughoton until late Oba Akenzua II, CMG, stopped them. However, in 1969 the Ijaw who had prior knowledge of oil discovery in the land, rose against the authority which erupted in a crisis at a time a Bini man, one Ogbeifun Egharevba was Odionwere of Gelegele. An administrative inquiry was setup by the then Midwest State Government of Brigadier-General Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, headed by one Mr. S. Jamgbadi, a Senior District Officer and sat at Ekehuan. A report was issued in 1970, and we quote inter-alia: “It is however established that the Ijaws have been resident in Gelegele for many years and that during these years they have acquired landed property and cultivated farms; but from the facts in evidence they qualify as TENANTS on the land - their-long period of occupation notwithstanding. The matter went through the High Court of Justice and Federal Court of Appeal in Benin and the Supreme Court -in Lagos. The Binis secured victory all the way. The following suit numbers are material evidences to buttress our claim to the land at Gelegele and environs 1. High Court of Justice, Benin Judgment delivered on the 22nd December 1978 by .Justice. Ekeruche J in Suit No. B/I44/1970. 2. Federal Court of Appeal judgment delivered on the 16th December1981 by Abdul Ganiy Olatunji· Agbaja and 2 others in Suit No. FCA/B/82/80. 3. Supreme Court unanimous Judgment delivered on the 19th ‘August 1983 by Muhamedu Lawai Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation and 4 others in Suit No. SC.131/1982. Ijaws are only settlers on Benin land and have no legal, moral or historical support for their claims to be owners of where they find themselves. |

By Simon Ebegbulem BENIN—OMO N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II (Ogidigan), yesterday, went after the suspended Isekhure of Benin, Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, as his chiefs stormed the palace of Chief Isekhure, to secure the Erimwi-Idu Shrine belonging to the Oba and in the process brought down part of the palace after which the entire building was sealed off. Chief Eduwu Ekhator, the Obasogie of Benin Kingdom, who led other chiefs to the ancestral palace of Chief Isekhure, explained that the action was “part of the process of ostracizing him,” noting that the safety of some vital and important artifacts in the palace, “now in the wrong hands,” was worrisome to the Oba. It will be recalled that the Benin Traditional Council, BTC, led by the Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe, had suspended Chief Isekhure indefinitely, accusing him of violating several palace rules as a chief of the Oba. Among the allegations was that Isekhure allegedly “openly badmouthed senior chiefs and vilified them, and during those times he declared that the chiefs were not senior to him and that he would not pay respect to them again as palace customs demand.” But in a swift response, the Ihogbe N’Ore, in a statement by Mr Osagbakhoe Ogbomuda, described the allegations as untrue, claiming the palace was engaging in a cheap blackmail which according to it, was a “case of giving a dog a bad name so that one can have a reason to hang such dog”. However, the invasion of Chief Isekhure’s palace caused traffic jam on Sakpoba Road, Benin City, for several hours, as Ihogbe youths, the family Chief Isekhure also hails from, destroyed the statues of the Isekhure and every structure erected in the compound which made the place a palace. Helpless family members wept uncontrollably as they watched the destruction. Before the destruction commenced, Chief Ekhator pleaded with Chief Isekhure who was inside the compound to hand over all property of the palace peacefully. For several hours Chief Isekhure locked himself inside the house. However, when he came out, he had a heated argument with Chief Ekhator and other palace chiefs, asking if they came to arrest him. While he was arguing with them, Chief Ekhator signalled the police men to come over, Chief Isekhure ran inside his room immediately and locked up the door. That infuriated the palace chiefs who then ordered for the demolition of part of the palace. Explaining their mission, Chief Ekhator told journalists that “This is the process of ostracizing him (Chief Isekhure). Some of the real power house of the monarchical power of the Oba, are here. Information reaching the palace is that some artifacts are being tampered with. Obviously the Oba is the owner of that building, even though in his magnanimous manner, he kept him there to take care of those things. He is like the sceptre bearer of the Oba, he now wants to take the sceptre and run away instead of keeping it for the Oba. The Oba will look for it. We have had cause to secure artifacts and the shrine and possibly the area they occupy it so that it cannot be broken. “This house is the Oba’s house. We are not after the man. The Oba has already told him to take those other extensions he built there. But the original foundation of the palace property should remain where it is. It is a monumental structure which we must fortify.”

The Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II has ordered the immediate suspension of Community Development Associations (CDAs) in all the seven local government areas of Edo State which constitute the Benin Kingdom. All land matters would henceforth be adjudicated by the Oba or through the Enogie or Edionwere and no longer through Community Development Associations. The seven local government areas of the Benin Kingdom are Oredo (capital), Egor, Ikpoba Okha, Uhunmwode, Orhionmwon, Ovia South West and Ovia North East local government areas. The Oba, who is the paramount ruler over the Edo South District of Edo state, has traditional right over all native lands in the kingdom, especially lands that falls outside the rights of the governor under the Land Use Act. For many decades the Oba was in charge of adjudicating on land disputes throughout the district. But in recent times, especially since the advent of democracy in 1999, there had been a proliferation of so-called community development associations led by mostly thugs instead of community elders or true members of the community. These so-called community development associations are not known to grade roads, control erosion or provide security for the community but they collect dues in hundreds of thousands of naira and oftentimes trouble land developers preventing them from developing lands through violence and intimidation. Many of the CDAs are notorious for selling lands to more than one persons thereby creating lots of land ownership crisis in the state. Also they levy developers of lands all sorts of illegal and unaccounable levies which makes development of property in Benin frustrating and unattractive. The pronouncement Sunday by the Benin monarch has elicited jubilation throughout Edo with many residents of Benin City hailing the decision as one of the best pronouncements since his ascension to the ancient throne. Barr Abraham Oviawe, a civil rights activist and resident of Benin City hailed the decision at Agenda Setting forum saying “Great. Peace will reign in communities now” Mr Austen Ehiguese said “The great Oba has just started well, God will bless him for us” However many community development associations leaders, many of whom are leaders of a certain political party in Edo State, have started to murmur in hushed tones but in Benin the Oba’s word is law to a very large extent. http://www.urhokpotareporters.com/2016/10/23/oba-ewuare-ii-suspends-community-development-associations-in-benin-kingdom/

We don't care.Any of their candidates is dead on arrival in Edo state. |
I want to refer all the readers of this article to newspaper publication of the Nation Newspaper of Monday 19th May,2014 at Page 43 how the fighting over the soul of APC and Governorship interest of Pastor Ize-iyamu made him and this Grace Group to leave and pitch tent with PDP. Pator Ize-iyamu should stop lying to Edo people on the reasons He left APC. The resignation of Pastor Ize-iyamu followed a 7 day ultimatum given to Comrade Oshimole to cancel APC congress which they believed they have lost out. Those that left with Ize-iyamu included Prince Tony Omoaghe, Alhaji Usman Shagadi, House of Rep member then Mr Abubakar Momoh, Mr Godwin Eshishie, Chief Alemoh Akhigbe, Kashimu Dokpesi, Mrs Bekilas Imisara,Mrs Evelyn Omorodion and Mr Lukman Mohammed. Other three members of House of Assembly Jude Ise-Idehen,Patrick Aisowerien,Friday Ogierakhi and Patrick osayimen. It was Omoaghe who read the communiqué at the end of their meeting in Benin City then. They alleged all of things including marginalization and other sort of things because they lost out in scheme of things. These men thought it was going to be usual way of doing things in the party but without knowing that Comrade Governor was out to promote internal democracy in the newly formed APC in the state as at that time. Before the expiration of the ultimatum, Pastor Ize-Iyamu met President Goodluck Jonathan and Chief Tony Anineh in Abuja. At the meeting he unfolded his plan to dump the APC. At that time, Ize-iyamu was offered the deputy Governorship ticket by the PDP while other defectors were promised juicy appointments. They were also told to register at their various ward level. Now plans were then to receive them into PDP by President Goodluck Jonthan. Had jonthan won His re-election, the Governorship candidate of PDP would have come from Esan land. PDP decided to turn to Binis because they thought they will use Binis population to win. But this project is dead on arrival. Even when the Grace returned from Abuja, Comrade Governor called for peace meeting ,but their demands shocked the Governor. Their Demands included sacking of some commissioners and harmonization of the elected party officials in their favour. Many Party Chieftains in Edo State then were of the opinion that Ize-Iyamu’s ambition to succeed Oshimole in this year’s Governorship election were responsible for the division in the party then. Signs of cracks had emerged in 2012 when the Pastor kicked against Oshiomole’s choice of Dr Pius Odubu as His Running mate in 2012 Governorship election. But the Governor was resolute. Then Dr Odubu has not declared his intention to run for Governorship election and Comrade Governor has not promised Dr Odubu that he will hand over to him. Oshiomole was only interested in providing good governance for the people of EDO state. The real reason the group loyal to Ize-iyamu resigned from APC was because they believed at that time APC belongs to them. But They failed to realize that younger ones are coming up. Pastor Ize-iyamu is popular among old Politicians with wealth who wants to drag Edo back and continue to dictate who gets what and who becomes what. Today in the politics of Edo state, many people who are sons and daughters of nobody who must seek endorsement and approval of these old men before getting anything in EDO state have been pushed away. Even at the age of 70, 80 and 90 years old, they are still battling to be relevant in scheme of things without leaving stage for the younger generations to come up. Oshiomole has brought service delivery to Edo state. He has brought accountability and integrity to this state. You may not like the Face of Godwin Obaseki ,but He is the best man for the job. Many people contest election with this mindset, when I become Governor every other thing will fall in. they do not have proper agenda and vision. Some will tell you that the vision is clear. The future is here. If a state like Bayelsa with 8 LGA and that has population not up to LGA in Edo state can be owing salaries and as one of states that gets huge allocation from Federal Government, then EDOLITES need to ask themselves serious question. It is not about being a Pastor and or what have you. Edo state needs a man with creativity and vision to move and consolidate on the success story of this Oshiomole Government. It is only a blind man that will say that Oshiomole did not deliver in EDO state. Even the blinds can testify. EDOLITES should not make that mistake. I have conducted my opinion polls in this state in the last two weeks from market women, okada riders in the villages, cab men, students and artisans etc the choice is clear. My advice to some people, elections are not won on social media. If it is on social media, President Goodluck Jonathan would have continued today. Now we cannot afford to go back into opposition and dark days again. Edo State suffered infrastructural development under the Jonathan Goodluck administration. Besides our future and that of our children should not be mortgaged. PDP led government only believe in eating everything today and forgetting tomorrow. The Buhari led APC federal government is fighting corruption right now so that our future will become bright and colourful. So, Edo State is forward ever, backward never |
