Politics / Ondo Guber: No Free Ticket For You – APC Tells Aiyedatiwa by Esther125: 5:29am On Jan 19
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has told Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State that there will be no automatic ticket for him.

The APC made the declaration ahead of the November 16, 2024, governorship poll in the state.

APC national spokesman, Felix Morka, made this known on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday.

According to him, the APC is democratic and everyone who desires a nomination must earn it.

When asked whether the APC would give Aiyedatiwa the right of first refusal ahead of the party’s primary for the November poll, Morka said, “We have not had that discussion but we are a democratic party; we are a progress party; we don’t give anything to people; people have to justify and earn it.

“And it is not to us they have to justify their suitability, their qualification, or criteria; it is to the people of the state who are our members, who would participate in the direct or indirect primary.

“Whatever preference anyone may have, it is all subject to the democratic decision of the party members who will participate in our primaries.

“We don’t give free gifts in APC; we contest and we compete and we win whatever it is we can get in terms of representation,” he added.

Morka also said he can’t pre-empt whether the governorship ticket would be zoned in Ondo or not.

“We are yet to engage on zoning. We will explain to the people if and when we do that,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa, formerly Ondo deputy governor, was sworn in as the substantive governor of the South-West state on December 27, 2023, following the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Already, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed the Ondo State Governorship Poll for November 16, 2024, barring last-minute changes.

Politics / It Can Only Happen In Nigeria – Peter Obi Slams Tinubu Over N3bn Social Register by Esther125: 11:34am On Jan 17
The Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate in the last election, Mr. Peter Obi, has described as surprising the approval of N3 billion by the current administration for verification of national register of the poor, saying it could only happen in Nigeria.

Obi said the equivalent amount spent for verification exercise would have made a significant impact if prudently and transparently managed.

He wondered why such a huge sum was approved for just verification of national register of the poor, when the same amount could have been directed towards actual poverty alleviation.

In a statement issued on his X handle on Wednesday, the former Anambra State governor said the approval raises a fundamental question as to how come the data for poverty alleviation has not been verified on a regular basis.

He lamented the inability of the leaders to prioritise expenditure and focus on the critical areas of national development and national security, which he said are the challenges weighing down on the nation.

“It is very surprising to hear that the sum of N3 billion was approved for verification of national register of the poor. This can only happen in Nigeria. I have maintained that we must decisively deal with the issue of cost of governance in Nigeria now as a matter of urgency.

“Sadly, this very huge amount approved just for verification of national register of the poor is more than three times the amount of N908,699,435 which was budgeted for our National Library.

“This is happening at a time in our nation when we need all the manpower training to to keep our work force productive. Our national library, a very critical infrastructure in our nation, seemingly abandoned, lacks books and educational materials.

“The same amount, would have made a significant impact, if prudently and transparently managed. Moreso, with more than half of our population battling with absolute and multi dimensional poverty, one wonders why such a huge sum was approved for just verification of national register of the poor, when the same amount could have been directed towards actual poverty alleviation. This approval raises a fundamental question: how come the data for poverty alleviation has not been verified on a regular basis?

“The inability of we the leaders to prioritise our expenditure and focus on the critical areas of national development, and national security, are the challenges weighing down on our nation today.

“Unless we begin to sacrifice our personal comfort for the good of society, and begin to care more for the people, especially the less privileged ones, our nation will continue to grapple with all forms of societal ills caused by high level of poverty. “

Politics / Insecurity: Wike Condemns Constant Travel By FCT Council Chairmen by Esther125: 1:14pm On Jan 16
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, has frowned at constant travels by area council chairmen in the wake of security challenges in the city.

Recall that there has been a spike in the abduction and killing of residents by bandits, especially in Kuje and Bwari area councils.

The minister on Tuesday described the constant travels as unacceptable.

He said, “This time around, we will not be happy where area council chairmen will abdicate their responsibilities and travel out.

“We have gotten reports that the council chairmen travel any time, and if anything happens, they will not call anybody’s name but the FCT minister’s.

“So, council chairmen should know that they must wake up to their responsibilities. It is not everything that happens people will say that the ministers are not taking steps.”

Business / NNPC To Hand Over Port Harcourt Refinery To Private Firm As Operation Begins by Esther125: 11:38am On Jan 16
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, has called for Expression of Interest, EOI, from qualified oil and gas firms to operate and maintain the Port Harcourt refinery.

In a public notice, NNPCL said the process would help improve dependability and sustain Nigeria’s fuel supply and energy security requirements.

The country’s oil company said the “operate & maintain” model was “one of the key requirements by the lender” for the Port Harcourt project.

According to NNPCL public notice: “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is seeking to engage reputable and credible Operations & Maintenance (O&M) companies to operate and maintain one of its refineries, Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC), to ensure reliability and sustainability towards meeting the nation’s fuel supply and energy security obligations.”

In December, NNPCL announced the “mechanical completion” of the 60,000 bpd part of the 210,000-capacity plant, after several years of abandonment. The refinery is expected to begin to have its products in the market anytime from the end of this month.

In 2021, NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, said the Federal Government was considering a plan to become a minority shareholder in the beleaguered oil refineries.

That was after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, signed off on a $1.5 billion rehabilitation plan, funded largely by Afrexim Bank as well as from Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, by NNPC, for the Port Harcourt refining complex, which has a capacity of 210,000 barrels per day.

In the public notice Monday, among others, NNPCL stated that any company applying to operate and maintain the plant must present its audited accounts between 2019 and 2022 as well as demonstrate a minimum average annual turnover of $2 billion between 2019 and 2022.

The Port Harcourt refinery rehabilitation project, which cost about $1.5 billion, covers engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning phases.

Business / Dangote Refinery: Marketers Speak On Imminent Fuel Price Reduction by Esther125: 11:36am On Jan 15
Following the commencement of operations at the Dangote Refinery, oil marketers have reacted to an imminent price reduction of fuel products.

.ng reports that the Dangote refinery announced the commencement of production last Friday.

The company said it awaits the Federal Government’s approval to supply diesel and JetA1 or aviation fuel across the domestic market.

Reacting to the development, President of Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association, PETROAN, Billy Gillis-Harry, said the coming onstream of the Dangote refinery means the cost of refined products would be impacted positively.

“However, the fact that the crude oil being used is the one for domestic consumption takes away the cost of freight and insurance from the total cost. So, if that has been removed, there is a likelihood that prices will be impacted positively to the benefit of Nigerians.

“But what exactly will be the price is to be awaited and worked out because, for instance, we don’t know how much he received the crude oil, whether it is in naira or dollar, and that is business information that sometimes is difficult to release.”

“Regardless of the situation, we should still expect a reprieve; some advantages should come to us. So that is my thinking”.

Also, the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Abubakar Maigandi, hinted that as soon as its members commence loading the Dangote refinery’s petroleum products, the price will be determined.

“It is when we start loading that he can give us the price, and then we will know how much to sell”, Maigandi stated.

“Immediately he starts releasing products, we are assured of the availability of products, and there will be no more scarcity, provided that he is producing. Also, it will create employment opportunities.”

Meanwhile, Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, MOMAN, Clement Isong, said, “I’ve heard some people say there will be savings in freight; that might be true. But that is a tiny part of the cost. The major part of the cost is the raw material, which is the crude oil; even the refining cost is quite small. I don’t expect a significant price drop, definitely not N400; that’s very unlikely, in my opinion.”

Politics / ‘My Friend Has Offered To Pay N50m Ransom To Kidnappers’ – Isa Pantami by Esther125: 6:03am On Jan 15
Former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, has revealed that one of his friends has offered to pay a N50 million ransom being demanded by bandits who abducted Alhaji Mansoor Al-Kadriyar’s six children.

The kidnappers have threatened to kill the remaining five sisters after murdering Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar on Friday.

She was killed on Friday by her abductors and was laid to rest according to Islamic rites on Saturday.

Nabeeha was a 400-level student of Biological Science at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Others abducted include Najeebah (500 level, Quantity Surveying) and Nadheerah (300 level, Zoology).

Posting on X, the former minister wrote: “Alhamdu lil Laah! I am personally not in support of paying ransom to criminals. However, since it became clear that we lost our daughter Nabeeha yesterday and the five remaining daughters have been threatened, I spoke with the father on the matter yesterday and today, I spoke with a friend and a brother who offered to pay the remaining 50 million Naira of the 60 million immediately.

“I conveyed the account number of the father of our daughters, Mansoor Al-Kadriyar, to the friend and brother to send the money directly. Any additional amount generated yesterday, the father can use to treat the daughters and other family members, in sha Allah.

“May the Almighty Allah reward the brother and friend with Jannatul Firdaus for the donation.”

Politics / I Won’t Be Distracted By Second Term In 2026 – Ekiti Gov, Oyebanji by Esther125: 6:41pm On Jan 13
Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has said he would not get distracted by underhand political schemings ahead of the 2026 governorship race in the state, describing the idea of a second term as the least of his worries for now.

The Governor also said work on the 1.2 kilometres flyover to be constructed between Okeyinmi and Ijigbo roundabouts in Ado Ekiti would commence early in the year to help decongest the business district and give the state capital Ekiti a facelift.

Oyebanji stated these on Saturday at the grand finale of the 2024 Week of Prayer organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in conjunction with the Ekiti State Government, held at Jibowu Hall, Government House, in Ado Ekiti.

At the intercessional programme, prayers were offered for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the success of his economic policies and programmes as well as for the security and progress of the country. The Biodun Oyebanji administration was also rededicated to God for guidance and leadership.

Addressing the congregation at the event, which was a follow-up to the maiden edition held on January 14, 2023, the governor said news had been filtering in that some politicians had started holding nocturnal meetings ahead of the 2026 governorship election, saying he won’t allow this to derail his focus in the interest of Ekiti citizens.

“They said some people have started holding meetings, I am not bothered by this. For now, 2026 is the least of my worries. What I am really bothered about is leading Ekiti to prosperity, and allowing God to guide us.

“I have made a covenant that there won’t be tolerance for corruption, dishonesty, and disobedience to orders, so I won’t allow second-term ambition to distract me. Human beings can play politics, but God is the master politician. He knows how to take care of everything”.

In his testimony, Oyebanji relayed to the congregation that prayer and faith in God have made governance an easy task for him, not brilliance, exposure, or any other factor.

“When I became the Governor, which I never believed in my wildest imagination, I was asked to state what I wanted to go and do. I said God told me to go and feed my people. That was why, in the first year, I dedicated to the welfare of my people. We were paying salary, pension, and gratuity.

“As we were doing all these, some people said what is going to be my legacy, they advised that I should go and do infrastruture. But I insisted that if I fed the people first, infrastructure would come. Because I was obeying God, money for infrastructure was being provided.

“Let me tell you that work will commence in the coming weeks on the flyover we planned to construct in Ado Ekiti to ease traffic in the business district around Ejigbo. This is just one of many other projects that will be undertaken.

“In the last one year, God has done in Ekiti what only Him can do. People are asking where he is getting the money.

“Some said I didn’t have the right connections. But, God, in His infinite mercy, has sent me on a mission and when God says I should move, I do that and we have been able to meet the expectations of the people.

“God just thrust me forward knowing that I wasn’t the most brilliant , the most connected and I didn’t have anything called political structures .The only thing I will continue to do is to exalt God in this position. There wasn’t any time I got worried that I am the Governor because I know He sent me on this mission”.

In his short Bible exhortation, the CAN Chairman in Ekiti, Reverend Emmanuel Aribasoye, charged Nigerians to always embrace justice and fair play and run away from attitudes that can corrupt the system for the nation to enjoy peace, unity and prosperity.

Delivering the second sermon at the event, the National Leader of Intercessor for Nigeria, Pastor Stephen Olumuyiwa, urged the governor to work hard and redirect the state to the path of righteousness, honesty, integrity, unity, peace and prosperity in 2024 for Ekiti to savour more infrastructural facelift.

“Under Oyebanji, there should be no tolerance for corruption, dishonesty, disorder and injustice. There shouldn’t be disobedience to order. This country has good laws, but the problem is implementation. We don’t implement laws, even in the house of God. But this shouldn’t happen in Ekiti because the Governor has entered into a covenant to lead with the fear of God”.

Present at the event were Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, Head of Service, Engr. Sunday Akomolafe, Commissioners, Special Advisers, Chairman, Council of Ekiti State Traditional Rulers, Oba Ilori Faboro, royal fathers, priests, and civil servants, among others.

He further tasked candidates of various political parties to observe all rules and regulations guiding the bye-election that will be taking place in the five LGAs; Ohaozara, Onicha, Ivo, Afikpo North and Edda LGA.

According to him: “Before now, there was an agreement made for all to understand that the forthcoming Ebonyi south senatorial bye-election shouldn’t be a do-or-die affair.

Politics / Omokri Mocks Betta Edu: Oyedepo’s Prayers Should’ve Made You Set Good Example by Esther125: 4:21pm On Jan 08
An activist, Reno Omokri, has said the prayers of Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church should have made the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, conscious of setting good examples while in office.

.ng reported that President Bola Tinubu has suspended Edu for instructing the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to pay the sum of N585.18 million into a private account owned by one Oniyelu Bridget, said to be the project Accountant, Grants for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos and Ogun states.

The Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, rejected Edu’s directive and refused to pay the said sum.

Tinubu, while suspending Edu, ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate the minister thoroughly.

Reacting, Omokri said the scandal involving Edu was a wake-up call on Nigerians to distance politics from religion, adding that competence should be the only criteria to occupy an office.

Posting on X, Omokri wrote: “Just the fact that Bishop Oyedepo prayed for you to become a minister alone should have made you more conscious of setting a good example. While nobody is perfect, this recent episode, along with the scandal involving the Yes Daddy leaked audio and the Bishop, is yet another indication that we should not mix religion and politics.

“Competence should be the only qualification for high office. An irreligious person who is competent is likely to be better than a religious person who is not competent or capable. We cannot pray for a better country and then pray for people to occupy positions of power that they are not qualified for.

“That is why China, a country that has wholly divorced all forms of religion from its politics, is feeding, equipping and building Nigeria, one of the most religious countries on Earth.”

Recall that Edu had in a testimony, revealed that Tinubu appointed her minister after Oyedepo had prayed for her.

She disclosed this during the 2023 Living Faith Church’s annual programme, Shiloh.

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has urged President Bola Tinubu to solve the economic hardship in Nigeria, stressing that he should not wait until Nigerians start stoning him.

He warned Tinubu to treat the economic situation of the country as top priority because it keeps getting worse by the day.

In a statement by his spokesman, Oluwatosin Osho, the clergyman said there will be massive protests if the president doesn’t solve the problems.

He said people are hungry and salary earners can no longer sustain themselves with their earnings.

He urged the president not to wait till people start stoning him and every politician before realizing that he needs to get to work.

“If Tinubu doesn’t get to work immediately and find a way to solve our economic issues, there will be massive protests. The people are crying already, salary earners are not satisfied and it will get to a state where governors will not be able to pay salaries again.

“Don’t wait till they start stoning you and every politician before working, you need to do something now; there is serious hunger in the land. It will also affect some African nations. The president should do the needful,” he said.

Recall that during the release of his 2024 prophecies, Primate Ayodele recommended five areas for President Tinubu to focus on.

He said: “Government of Nigeria must work on five things in 2024 which can make the country to be great: Stable light, Improve security and buy more weapons, Development of infrastructural facilities, Agriculture (plenty of food) and Create employment.’’

Travel / 6 Dead, 11 Injured In Kaduna – Zaria Road Auto-crash by Esther125: 12:10pm On Jan 02
The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Kaduna Sector Command, has said six persons died and 11 sustained injuries in a road crash on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway.

The Sector Commander, Mr Kabir Nadabo, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna that the road traffic crash occurred at Aliko filling station on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway on Tuesday at about 06:25hrs.

Nadabo said the multiple accidents were caused by speeding and dangerous driving, which resulted in the temporary halting of motorists’ movement.

He, however, said that the road was now free and clear for movement, explaining that the rescue team of Zebra 35 Rigachikun responded promptly to the scene and conducted the rescue.

“The initial investigation of the crash revealed that 23 people were involved in the crash, 11 were injured and sadly, all 6 lost their lives,” Nadabo said.

He said that the investigation revealed that the Toyota bus was coming from Ilesha and heading to Batsari, in Katsina State, adding, ” The driver was at high speed, lost control and rammed into a moving vehicle, thus causing the crash.”

Nadabo said most of the road traffic crashes on the highway were caused by motorists not from Kaduna State but mostly from other states and were due to fatigue.

He stated that as the lead agency in transport management and road safety, the FRSC was saddened by this unfortunate but avoidable incident.

”The Corps in Kaduna State will continue to perform its statutory duty of saving lives and properties and, most fundamentally, creating awareness of the dangers of road safety vices and unethical road culture.

“Kaduna State is a critical corridor; therefore, the state Command has established instruments of safety that will guide transporters on the importance of safe travels in this yuletide season and beyond.

”Remember, the more we educate motorists on the significance of cultivating safety behaviour on the roads, the less Road Traffic Crashes will be experienced,” he said.

He called on the stakeholders, particularly the transport unions, to help reach out and advocate the language of safety to their drivers.

Nadabo added that the corps was liaising with media outlets to better inform the public on the dangers of dangerous driving, overloading, driving with worn-out tyres and fatigue caused by long journeys and other factors.

The sector commander appealed to all categories of road users to abide by safe driving ethics at all times.

A mild drama played out on Friday as residents of Lagos Island and traders of the popular Idumota market expressed dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu, shouting in Yoruba, “Ebi npa wa oo” meaning- we are hungry.

Underneath the complaining voices in the video, residents were heard saying the presidency had known the plans of the people which was the reason for the heavy security. However, the alleged initial plan was not made known.

The President is in Lagos to celebrate both Christmas and New Year.

.ng reports that Nigerians are currently celebrating the Yuletide under a series of economic challenges ranging from the shortage of cash to the skyrocketing price of the premium motor spirit commonly called petrol.

Politics / Tinubu Can’t Fix In 6 Months What Buhari Failed At In 8 Years – Shehu Sani by Esther125: 11:31am On Dec 30, 2023
Former Lawmaker, Shehu Sani has cautioned those criticising President Bola Tinubu over persistent insecurity across the country, including the northern region.

Writing on his verified Facebook page, Senator Shehu Sani said, “The hypocrisy of many people in the North is how they tolerated insecurity in the North during the eight years of Buhari and are now voicing out against it under Tinubu.

“It’s too early to forget how they shielded the past administration from criticism, it became almost a sin or taboo to criticize the past administration. At one time, all the Nation’s security, intelligence and defence apparatuses were headed by Northerners.

“Each time I stood on the floor of the Senate to speak about the kidnappings and killings in the North, I only got insulted even by the Kaduna State Government and the ruling party.

“The North should look inward and find solutions to its security challenges. What the man from Daura has not solved for 8 years, the man from Lagos can’t solve in 6 months, even though he has the responsibility and obligation to tackle it.”

Business / Naira Slumps To N1,043 Against US Dollar At Official Forex Market by Esther125: 11:37am On Dec 29, 2023
The Naira reached an all-time low on Thursday as it depreciated to N1,043.09 per US dollar in the official market a few days into the New Year.

The figure represents a significant N170.50 or 16.35 per cent depreciation compared to the N872.59/$1 it was quoted on Wednesday.

This is the second time the Naira crossed the N1,000/$ threshold; the first time was on Friday, December 8, 2023, when it reached a new historical low of N1,099.05 per Dollar in the official market.

This development represents a major turning point in the history of the Naira.

According to FMDQ data, forex turnover at the close of trading on Thursday dropped to $83.63 million, representing a 34.63 per cent decrease compared to the previous day.

Similarly, Naira depreciated marginally to N1,220 per Dollar on Thursday from N1,205 per Dollar.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Naira traded around N1,193.6 to $1 on Binance, a P2P market and crypto platform.

Politics / Rivers Crisis: Pro-wike Lawmakers Reject 2024 Budget by Esther125: 7:15am On Dec 18, 2023
The Martins Amaehwule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected the passage of the 2024 budget by the four members of the assembly led by Edison Ehie.

.ng reports that the four-man House of Assembly last week approved the N800 billion 2024 budget barely 24 hours after it was presented by Governor Similanayi Fubara.

However, speaking at the dedication service and stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Amaehwule, who is loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, accused Fubara of supervising the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex without notification.

“As we speak, the governor has gone to demolish the state House of Assembly, an edifice built with taxpayer money. He personally supervised the demolition, not minding that documents and archives belonging to members and staff of the Assembly were inside.

“The governor’s action is against the law. We hear that some four persons gathered and are meeting somewhere. We don’t know what they are doing. Rivers people should know today that the House of Assembly of any state is defined by the Constitution; to reconvene the House, you need to have a quorum, and the quorum is 11.

“We are 27, and they are just four. They are just doing a family meeting. Anything they told you they had done, ignore them; it’s null and void. The law is clear about it,” he stated.

Politics / Biafra: Supreme Court Decides Nnamdi Kanu’s Fate Today by Esther125: 7:38am On Dec 15, 2023
All is now set for the Supreme Court to deliver judgment to decide the fate of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, today, Friday.

Kanu has been in detention since June 2021 when he was rearrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition to Nigeria.

With his return, the Nigerian Government arraigned him before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a four-count charge of treasonable felony, conspiracy to commit treasonable felony, illegal importation of radio equipment, and defamation of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The charges were later withdrawn by former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami who replaced them with a fresh 14-count charge bordering on terrorism and membership of a proscribed group.

The court reduced the charges to seven counts which the Appeal Court later quashed.

Displeased by the verdict of the Appeal Court, the Nigerian Government filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.

Commenting on the much-anticipated judgment, an Abuja-based socio-political activist, Deji Adeyanju, said the Supreme Court should admit Kanu to bail.

He said: “My hope is that the Supreme Court will deliver a judgment that is acceptable to everyone, but no matter what the Supreme Court delivers, it will not be acceptable to some.

“In the case of Ojukwu vs the Lagos State government, once the right-thinking members of the public go home believing that the judiciary is biased, then it defeats the purpose for which the judiciary was set up. Our appeal to our judges is that they should deliver a judgment that will make citizens have confidence in the judiciary.

“Politicians must not be bad losers, they must learn to accept defeat when they lose elections.

“Kanu should be admitted to bail; bail is not an escape from justice. It’s an opportunity for the defendant to amply defend himself. In my view, this idea of turning people into political prisoners is unacceptable.”
