A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has stopped the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Unuoha, from arresting the spokesperson of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, Mr Faruk Adejoh-Audu. Also restrained in the order issued by the high court are the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Kogi State Director of DSS. The restraining order against the security agents is to last till the final determination of a motion on notice in an action for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights brought by Adejoh-Audu, who claimed his life has come under serious threat from the defendants. Adejoh-Audu, a veteran journalist, activist and politician, had gone to court after altercations between him and Unuoha on election matters, after which the latter publicly threatened the spokesman to expect some unstated consequences. The SDP Spokesperson had, on November 29, 2023, accused the police chief of collaborating with thugs to attack the interests of his party in the recently conducted governorship election in Kogi. However, the police commissioner held a press conference the next day in Lokoja and gave Adejoh-Audu a 24-hour ultimatum to substantiate his allegations or “be ready to face the consequences of his actions.” The SDP spokesperson had responded in a 17-paragraph document justifying his allegations. An FCT High Court presided over by Justice Hamza Muazu, after listening to O. U. Salifu, lawyer to the SDP spokesman, in an ex-parte application, granted the order restraining the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police and the State Director of DSS from arresting or interfering with the liberty of the applicant. The court has adjourned the matter to December 18, 2023, for the hearing of the motion on notice. https://.ng/2023/12/12/court-stops-police-dss-from-arresting-kogi-sdp-spokesperson-adejoh-audu/

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cancelled his scheduled trip to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the COP28 Climate Change Summit. The figure was comprised of government officials, representatives of the private sector, and civil society organisations. Following the outcry, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said the government only funded 422 delegates. Justice Mohammed Madugu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Bwari, has dismissed all the forgery allegations levelled against the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA) Chief Edozie Njoku by the Nigeria Police. The Police had on November 22, 2022, charged Chief Njoku and the Youth leader of APGA, Chukwuemeka Nwoga, to court over a purported allegation of conspiring with others at large to alter a judgment of the Supreme Court delivered by Justice Mary Peter Odili (rtd). Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice Madugu dismissed all the 14-count charges preferred against the APGA Chairman by the police. The court held that due to “lack of sufficient and credible evidence, the prosecution has failed woefully to prove its case against the defendants. “I find the 1st defendant, Chief Edozie Njoku and the 2nd defendant, Chukwuma Nwoga not guilty as charged, and therefore they have been discharged and acquitted” Justice Madugu ordered. The defence counsel had urged the court to discharge and acquit the defendants because the police had failed woefully to discharge the burden of proof solely placed on them by law. The court adopted the issue formulated by the defence counsel to determine whether the prosecution had proven its case against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt. By section 138 of the Evidence Act, the court noted that the prosecution is expected to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. In his judgment, Justice Madugu stated that “it is crystal clear that internal disputes in APGA had played a significant role in causing the complexity of the case. In the 1st count, the court noted that being an allegation of criminal conspiracy, it must be proven by the prosecution with circumstantial evidence. However, the court held that the prosecution witness did not produce any evidence linking the defendants with an agreement or conspiracy to commit the alleged offence. “In accordance with section 178 of the penal code, the prosecution did not establish any dishonest intent following the letter Chief Njoku wrote to Justice Mary Peter Odilli, retired. https://.ng/2023/12/05/breaking-alleged-forgery-court-discharges-acquits-apga-national-chairman-njoku/

The Federal Government has taken delivery of the Second Niger Bridge from the contractor, Julius Berger, seven months after the previous administration inaugurated it. The Minister of Works, Mr David Umahi, while addressing journalists shortly after he was conducted around the road and the facilities on Sunday by the Managing Director of Julius Berger, Dr Lars Richter, said he was satisfied with the level of work done. Umahi, while commending the previous and present administration for doing a lot to bring the work to fruition, described the job as “impeccable, very beautiful and well completed”. According to him, we have light issues, and we’ve put things together on how to permanently have light, especially at night. “What we have agreed is to deploy solar solution in the coming weeks so that every night we don’t have to run diesel. “The roads are going to be completed when we have completed the two interchanges, one is taking us off from Asaba town to cut off the traffic, and the other one is going to be done by Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) Ltd to avoid Onitsha town and take you straight to Obosi. “President Ahmed Tinubu is very committed to the project, and we are going to acquire more so that we can build service stations, filling stations, restaurants, supermarkets and other facilities as we see in the Western world. “We are determined to do that; the need to do this with the interchanges is going to be a very smart one so that over the years we can have a beautiful and maintained road,” he said. The minister further assured of security with the bridge by providing Closed-Circuit Television and some security personnel to provide security assistance within five minutes. Richter said the event was a technical handover after the project was inaugurated by the former administration. He said work was successfully completed in time and Julius Berger had delivered the highest quality of work. Also speaking, the Director, Bridges Design and Construction, South, Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Bede Obioha, tasked the residents around the second Niger bridge to help secure the already installed facilities and those that are yet to be installed safely. He commended the staff of his ministry and the contractors for a job well done, and urged the road users and the residents to abide by the rules of the road. https://.ng/2023/12/04/contractor-finally-hands-over-second-niger-bridge-to-tinubu-govt/

The Federal Government has disbursed N135.4 billion to states and the Federal Capital Territory following the second Independent Assessment of Results obtained under the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus. The National Coordinator of the NG-CARES Programme, Dr. Abdulkarim Obaje, conveyed this information in a statement on Sunday by Suleiman Odapu, the Information and Communication Officer at NG-CARES. The NG-CARES initiative, supported by the World Bank with a budget of $750 million, is a multi-sectoral programme aimed at providing essential emergency relief to vulnerable and poor Nigerians, with a particular focus on supporting smallholder farmers and MSMEs severely impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Obaje noted that the fund allocation was linked to the results of states and the FCT in their efforts to assist the underprivileged under the NG-CARES initiative. According to him, Nasarawa, Cross Rivers, and Zamfara emerged as the top performers, securing N13.6 billion, N10.9 billion, and N10.2 billion in the second round of the programme assessment. ”The top three best-performing states in this Second Round of Assessment are Nasarawa, which earned N13,697,828,496.96, Cross River N10,944,747,818.84, and Zamfara N10,231,055,267.82. “This is a milestone achievement in the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration at providing funds towards addressing multi-dimensional poverty in the country,” Obaje noted. Recall that in January 2022, former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo launched NG-CARES. Osinbajo said, “the World Bank loan is in the order of $750m, and this will be over two years (2021-2023); the intervention allocation to each state is $20m and $15m to the FCT; there is also $15m for the Federal Cares Support Unit.” https://.ng/2023/12/04/750m-world-bank-loan-fg-disburses-n135bn-to-36-states-fct/

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has denied having any relationship with Integrated Logistic Services Nigeria Limited (Intels). It was reported that Atiku is a beneficiary of the decision to rescind the contract cancellation between Intels and the federal government. Reacting to the report in a post on his official Twitter account on Sunday, Atiku stated that he sold his shares in Intels in 2020 and also made his exit from the company public in January 2021. “In January 2021, I made public the sale of my shares in Intels to the parent company, Orlean Investment Group. “The phased sale of those shares that commenced in 2018 peaked in December 2020. Intels also made public my exit from the oil and gas logistics company, meaning that a different entity now owns those shares I sold. “My divestment from the company that I co-founded has not been reversed. Consequently, I can’t, by any stretch of the imagination, be a beneficiary of the reinstatement of the boat pilotage monitoring business that was taken away from Intels by the Federal Government. “Therefore, the insinuation that I’m a beneficiary of the decision to rescind the cancellation of the contract between Intels and the FG is untrue and should be seen for what it is: mischief,” he wrote. https://.ng/2023/12/03/atiku-denies-relationship-with-intels/

The Court of Appeal in Lagos has dismissed the appeals brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their governorship candidates against the election of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State. In a unanimous decision on Saturday, the three-man Appeal Court panel upheld the victory of Otti at the polls, saying that it conformed with the provisions of the Electoral Act. The appellate court ruled that petitions brought by the appellants lacked in merit, as they were like “a comedy skit brought to a democratic setting”. The court said issues of political party membership is a pre-election matter, which also falls within the jurisdiction of the political party. It further said since Otti joined the Labour Party, won its primary election and submitted his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he was qualified to contest. On the issues of Bimodial Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, brought by the PDP and its candidate, the appeal court said the appellants failed to demonstrate or link their documentary evidence to the specific parts of the case. The judgement has sparked celebration among the supporters of Governor Otti in some parts of the State. https://.ng/2023/12/02/appeal-court-upholds-alex-ottis-election-as-abia-governor/

David Gift Okpala Okpolowu, popularly known as 2Baba, the wanted alleged cultist and murderer of Ahoada Division DPO, Bako Angbashim, has spoken from hiding and denied involvement in the DPO’s murder. 2Baba, in a voice note sent to the media in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said the news of the DPO’s murder came as a surprise to him, adding that he had nothing to do with it. Recall that cultists terrorizing Rivers State’s Ahoada East Local Government Area killed Angbashim during an operation in the state and seized his severed corpse. Following the occurrence, the state’s governor, Siminalayi Fubara, slammed a N100 million bounty on the culprit. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu on Thursday expressed hope of victory on December 15 at the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court will on December 15 hear the appeal of the Federal Government against the judgment of the Appeal Court that discharged and acquitted Kanu of all terrorism charges levelled against him. In 2022, the appellate court declared as illegal and unlawful Kanu’s abduction from Kenya to Nigeria and quashed the entire terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. The court held that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in the forceful rendition of Kanu to Nigeria, thereby making the terrorism charges against him incompetent and unlawful. In a judgment in an appeal by Kanu, by Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie, the criminal charges by the Federal Government against Kanu were voided and set aside. Displeased by the ruling, the Federal Government headed to the Supreme Court to contest the ruling of the Appeal Court. The apex court had fixed December 15 to deliver judgment on the matter. Kanu expressed hope of winning during his routine meeting with his legal team at the Department of State Services, DSS, facility in Abuja. This was disclosed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, in a post on X. According to Ejimakor: “UPDATE: Today, the Lead Counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN) led my humble self & Prince Mandela Umegborogu on a crucial visitation with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the DSS. Expectedly, Onyendu was well pleased with the recent stunning victory at Enugu & he expects no less on Dec 15 at SC. “Upon the pogrom, you seized their properties in Rivers, cheated them on State creation, starved them of roads, railways & seaport, renditioned their Leader & called them a dot. Now, you trouble them with #demolitions. But you still wonder why they #agitate. Why not? #FreeMNK.” https://.ng/2023/11/23/nnamdi-kanu-hopes-to-finally-defeat-fg-at-supreme-court-on-dec-15/ 1 Like 1 Share

The All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Timipre Sylva, has criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan over his comment on the outcome of the just-concluded governorship election in Bayelsa State. Sylva described Jonathan’s comment on the election as unfortunate. Governor Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had won his reelection bid during last Saturday’s governorship election. A 76-year-old man, David Ogunsanwo, had been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. .ng learnt that the 16-year-old girl is currently five months pregnant. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, confirmed the incident to newsmen. Adeleye, who expressed worry over the spate of defilement in the society, stated that the case would be charged to court. The Commissioner assured that her ministry would follow the matter to ensure that justice is served. The commissioner, who condemned the acts of sexual abuse in the country, appealed to victims to always speak out, even as she called on parents to stop withdrawing cases out of victimisation. She recalled how a 12-year-old girl was defiled by two men, and the father withdrew the case from the police, regretting that the same girl had been violated again. “We are aware that cases of violation and abuse are increasing. There’s a huge increase in these kinds of crimes, especially against children. “The incidents of people going to police, reporting and withdrawing the case is also increasing. And we want to draw the attention of all parents, that if your child is a victim of violation, report the case to the police and do not withdraw it, because when you withdraw the case, it gives the perpetrator the leeway to continue to do it and also do it to other children. “I am calling on the National Council of Women’s Society. We have a case of a 12-year-old girl, who has been violated before by two men. The case has been withdrawn by the father, and now she has been violated again by another person,” she regretted. The former lawmaker said they should sensitise parents to stop withdrawing such cases “because our biggest problem is that when things like this happen, parents say they don’t want to make it public.” https://.ng/2023/11/18/76-year-old-man-defiles-impregnates-teenage-girl-in-ogun/

The Osun Masterminds, TOM, a civil society organisation, has demanded the immediate reversal of the removal of the Osun State Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo. .ng recalls that Justice Adepele Ojo was sacked by the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke on Thursday. The sack, according to a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, followed a resolution by the Osun State House of Assembly on Thursday. The Osun Assembly also directed the governor to swear in Justice Olayinka David Afolabi as the acting Chief Judge of the state. However, TOM, during its November state of the state address by the Executive Director, Prof Wasiu Oyedokun Alli in Osogbo on Friday, appealed to Osun stakeholders to quickly call the Governor and the House of Assembly to order, in order to forestall a breakdown of constitutionality in the state. It also added that if not done, Osun was headed for a dark abyss which should be risen against. According to the statement, “The news of the House of Assembly’s resolution to remove the Chief Judge and ask the Governor to swear in a replacement, in acting capacity, left us dazed. “This is because we believed that the 8th Assembly, populated by true youths, should be looking to set positive standards for legislation, to convince everyone that indeed, youths have the capacity to lead. “Unfortunately, the Osun State House of Assembly is quickly turning itself into not just a rubber-stamp Assembly, but a willing tool in the hands of the Executive, used to legitimize any and every illegality that the Executive wants to perpetrate. “We call on all men and women of goodwill, who have the love of the State at heart, to quickly call the Governor and the House of Assembly to order, to forestall a breakdown of constitutionality in our dear State. “The removal of the Chief Judge must be reversed if we are to remain a State governed by laws and not the fiats of just a few privileged individuals. Osun State should never become a lawless State where we take decisions just to satisfy the whims and caprices of some persons without any regard for the provisions of our laws and our constitution.” The group, while warning against the perceived illegality in the sack of the Osun CJ, added that such acts had the tendency to escalate into unrest and threaten the peace of the state. While revealing that it had reliable information of clandestine plans to physically assault Justice Adepele Ojo if she showed up at work, TOM warned those behind it to shelve the plan.
