Politics / I Never Entertained Any Fear Over Lawsuits Against Me – Otti On Tribunal Victory by Esther125: 7:36am On Oct 07, 2023
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has dedicated his victory at the governorship election tribunal, to the people of the state, assuring them that the victory, would spur him to serve the people with greater zeal and passion, in appreciation.

This is even as he declared that he never entertained any level of fear over the law suits against his March 18, 2023 electoral victory.

Otti stated this in a message he issued, after the election petition tribunal sitting in Umuahia, dismissed the petitions brought against him by candidates of the PDP and APC, Okey Ahaiwe and Ikechi Emenike.

Otti’s statement which was signed by Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, his Special Adviser on media and publicity, read in part; ” Even though we never entertained any atom of fear over the suit filed against us, going by the landslide victory we recorded at the polls, coupled with the sound submissions made by our team of erudite lawyers to defend our victory, I was, however, moved by the unprecedented show of love, support and solidarity from our people which is a manifestation of their appreciation of the modest achievements we have recorded so far, hence my resolve to serve them with greater zeal and passion”.

Otti also thanked the Judges for their sound judgement which, according to him, reflected what happened at the polls and what the majority of the people truly expected, maintaining that nothing enriches the legal jurisprudence and strengthens democracy more than dispensing justice to those who deserve it.

He called on his opponents to accept the judgement with humility and equanimity and join hands with him to work for the development of the state.

The Abia State Governor further promised to work for the overall well-being of all Abia citizens, irrespective of political party differences.

Crime / Customs CG Storms Ogun As Command Seizes Rice, Weeds, Used Tyres, Others by Esther125: 3:53pm On Oct 06, 2023
The Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, on Friday stormed Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital following the seizure of various smuggled goods by the Ogun 1 Area Command.

Adeniyi, who was flanked by the Controller of the Command, Ahmadu Bello Shuaib, said the Command, in two weeks, intercepted 1,436 used pneumatic tyres, 53 sacks, and 569 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, weighing a total of 1,179 kilograms.

The Service also seized 3,149 bags of foreign parboiled rice, each weighing 50 kilograms, alongside 32 vehicles used for conveyance, among other items,” Adeniyi stated.

While addressing newsmen at the NCS headquarters in Abeokuta, Adeniyi said his presence in Ogun underscored the NCS’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria from potential road accidents and harmful substances, “as we continue to intercept these perilous goods.”

The Acting Comptroller General expressed concern over the importation of foreign-used pneumatic tyres, otherwise known as Tokunbo tyres.

“These are ring-shaped protective coverings made of rubber and filled with compressed air, typically used in foreign countries. Regrettably, they are deemed unsuitable for our highways. A significant number of these tyres have exceeded their recommended lifespan from their manufacturing date.

“According to safety experts, good-quality pneumatic tyres are safe for use for only four years from the date of manufacturing. Any usage beyond this duration poses a significant risk to motorists and jeopardizes their lives,”
he said.

Adebiyi also expressed worry over the rise in the abuse of Cannabis Sativa, commonly known as marijuana or Indian hemp, within Nigerian society, especially among the youth.

He highlighted the ingenious tactics being employed by the smugglers of weeds, including smuggling through land borders, utilizing creeks, and even resorting to smuggling via air routes.

However, the CG said he was delighted that, “our officers’ relentless efforts and unwavering dedication in Zone A, specifically the Ogun 1 Area Command, have borne fruit, leading to the interception of Cannabis Sativa” and other illicit drugs.

The seized items, whose Duty Paid Value (DPV) he said was N241,977,943, were intercepted at various locations, including Papa-Ajegunle-Ilaro road, Imasayi-Joga road, Ijebu-Ode axis, and Odogbolu bush path, along the Ijebu-Ode road in Ogun State.

He stressed that the seizures are a testament to the NCS’s renewed determination and strategic deployment of both human and material resources.

“Our commitment to protecting Nigerians from the audacious actions of daredevil smugglers remains unwavering. We are resolute in our mission to curb illicit trade, safeguard our roads from dangerous tyres, and protect our youth from the devastating effects of illicit drugs,” he said.

Business / FG Announces N25,000 Grant For Vulnerable Pensioners by Esther125: 12:16pm On Oct 05, 2023
The Federal Government has announced a special grant of N25,000 each under its Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Scheme to vulnerable pensioners in the country.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, announced this when she met with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, led by its President, Joe Ajaero, in Abuja.

“President Bola Tinubu mentioned very clearly that vulnerable pensioners should be immediately captured on the National Social Register and benefit from the CCT.

“As part of social safety net, this was made clear in his speech on Independence Day where he committed 25000 Naira for 15million household for three months”, she said.

Edu informed the leadership of the labour union that the desire to expand the national social register to include vulnerable pensioners in the CCT scheme was encapsulated in the renewed hope agenda.

She, therefore, appealed to the NLC to help fast-track the process of collating data of would-be vulnerable pensioner beneficiaries so that they can start receiving CCT.

“I want us to fast-track this so that we are sure the expected beneficiaries can start receiving their stipends from next month, which is November,” Edu said.

The minister commended Ajaero for being a team player.

According to her, moving Nigeria forward was a collective task.

Therefore, she urged NLC leadership to continue having faith in the Tinubu Administration.

Business / FG Targets 500,000 Jobs, Foreign Direct Investment With Ajaokuta Industrial Park by Esther125: 11:41am On Oct 05, 2023
The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, has revealed the Federal Government’s plan to make the proposed Ajaokuta Industrial Park attract foreign direct investment and 500,000 jobs in three years.

Audu disclosed this during his maiden visit to the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCOL) on Wednesday, taking a tour of the steel complex.

He also pledged his commitment to ensure steel production from the multi-billion dollar investment project of the Federal Government under a three-year plan.

The Minister, who was accompanied on the trip by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Mary Ogbe, staff of the ministry, and some foreign investors, said the visit was aimed at giving him first-hand knowledge of the problems stopping production in the company in a bid to proffer solutions.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also taken an interest in the resuscitation of the steel complex by appointing him as the pioneer Minister to show the world the importance of steel development to industrialization.

“We want to thank the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for having the vision to create a Steel Development Ministry. Over the past 40 years, we had the largest steel plant in Nigeria and one of the largest in West Africa, which has not functioned. Still, the President knows that we must get the steel industry working to industrialize Nigeria.

“In line with the 8-point agenda of the ‘Renewed Hope mantra’ of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, one of the key elements are job creation, diversification of the economy and attracting Foreign Direct Investment. If we can revitalize Ajaokuta, it will help us achieve this. This key point agenda will also help us eradicate poverty.

“To achieve this, we have put together two documents. A three-year plan for the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company, which will have a small and medium-term term plan.

“Part of the things is the roadmap to designate the 24,000 hectares land of Ajaokuta an industrial park, to create a free trade zone to attract Foreign Direct Investment further.

“My job is to try and ensure that all those typical issues that have held the plant from producing will be resolved. And by the first term of this administration, if we can produce some sheet of steel, it will be a significant achievement.

“I have taken an extensive tour of the complex and plants, and there are lots of opportunities that if we can unlock, we will be able to create over 500,000 jobs, which will benefit kogites a bit more importantly, Nigerians. This will also guarantee that everyone benefits from the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“I am being accompanied here today by investors ready to put their expertise to ensure this steel company works.

“We have the Russians, Americans, Arabs and Chinese who are interested. They have come to show their desire to conduct an advanced technical audit to see what needs to be completed.

“After my findings from here, we will forward everything to Mr President for approval,” Audu said.

Crime / Ex-Nigerian Minister, Alison-madueke Faces Bribery Charges In London Court by Esther125: 2:51pm On Oct 02, 2023
Former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Monday, appeared in a London court over charges of receiving bribes in the form of cash, flights on private jets, luxury goods and the use of high-end properties in Britain in return for awarding oil contracts.

Making her first court appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court, Alison-Madueke spoke only to give her name, date of birth and address.

The 62-year-old was not asked to enter a plea.

The charges against her, read out in court, all related to events alleged to have taken place in London during her time as a minister in Nigeria.

Prosecutor, Andy Young alleged that Alison-Madueke accepted a wide range of advantages in cash and in-kind from people who wanted to receive or continue to receive the award of oil contracts which he said were worth billions of dollars in total.

This is coming a few weeks after the former finance minister in Nigeria was charged with bribery offences by the UK National Crime Agency (NCA).

Alison-Madueke was arrested in London in 2015, shortly after stepping down as minister. She has spent the past eight years on police bail, living in St John’s Wood, an expensive area of London.

She was Nigeria’s Minister for Petroleum Resources between 2010 and 2015, during the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan.

She is the second high-profile Nigerian politician to face prosecution in Britain in recent years, following James Ibori, a former Delta State governor.

.ng reports that staff of Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company AUMTCO, were seen in a viral video protesting and crying over the sack of the company’s managing director.

The MD and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Najeeb Abdulsalam, was among the 21 heads of parastatals, agencies, and companies of the FCT Administration that were sacked by the minister a few days ago.

“That is why when I watch people on video, crying that somebody has been removed and that he has been doing well, the question is if you have been doing well, where are the buses?” Wike told reports in Abuja.

“No sentiment, no emotions will be considered when we are doing what is right. We will do the right thing in the interest of the people.

“If you like, carry 20 people, put a video, and cry as much as you want to cry, it will not bother us. What bothered us is the reality on the ground.

Crime / ‘ex-nimasa Boss, Patrick Akpobolokemi, Is After My Life’ – Former DSS Official by Esther125: 7:29pm On Oct 01, 2023
A retired personnel of the Department of State Service,DSS, Mr. Kelly Ojobokeme, has raised the alarm that a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency,NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi and his wife, Beauty, are after his life.

Kelly, who spoke with newsmen at the NUJ Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during the weekend, alleged that Akpobolokemi mobilised three armed policemen to beat him and later detained him at Ekeki Police Station.

He said he applied for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights in court to restrain Akpobolokemi from making further attempts on his life.

Kelly alleged that attempts had been made by unknown men to kidnap him, adding that he had continued to receive suspicious and threatening phone calls from unidentified people.

He said: “The public should know that Patrick Akpobolokemi is after my life. As far as he is concerned, I am his worst enemy. The wife is also showing a video of how I was beaten to a pulp, calling me names. That means these people will not end any of this until they have finished me up.

“Despite going to the court, the former NIMASA boss is still planning to kill me. So the best for me is to come to the public and cry for help. Let the whole public hear, so that whatever that happens to me, they should hold Patrick Akpobolokemi and his wife responsible.

“He is now using the police for a matter that is a none issue. I have once been detained at the Area Command, Opolo, after the first dehumanization and detention at Ekeki Police station and subsequently transferred to the Office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16.

“I have seen the whole case and that the only problem they had with me is owing to the fact that I used to pray with his younger brother, Mr. Clement Akpobolokemi who is my friend and my prayers became a threat to him for reasons best known to him.

Kelly further alleged that while he served in the DSS, the Service’s intervention prevented the former NIMASA boss from dealing with him.

“But he has heard that I have retired from the DSS, he is using his powers, money and connection to come after my life.

“I have been receiving very suspicious calls, I have no problem with any other person, only him have come out to beat me like that, wounded me without any form of apology. He never apologized to me, not even his family members.

“If anything happens to my life or my family or his brother, Clement Akpobolokemi, Patrick Akpobolokemi and his wife should be held responsible”, he added.

Politics / US Court Orders Release Of Tinubu’s Academic Records In 48 Hours by Esther125: 6:10pm On Oct 01, 2023
The Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has again emerged victorious in his fierce legal battle to probe into the academic qualification of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25 presidential poll.

Tinubu had supplied certificates from the Chicago State University, CSU, to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to secure eligibility to participate in the election.

A United States of America court on Saturday ordered CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records for verification and in support of Atiku’s petition challenging the result of the 2023 presidential poll.

Justice Nancy Maldonado in a judgment dismissed the objection raised by Tinubu against Atiku’s request and expressly ordered that the CSU must submit the academic records to Atiku.

The judge in the judgment granted all the four grounds upon which the former Vice-President predicated his case in the US court.

Justice Maldonado said that Tinubu’s violent rhetoric cannot take the place of evidence, hence, the order that the academic records be released in the interest of justice.

The judge specifically issued an ultimatum of 48 hours within which the university must comply with her order and release the controversial academic records to the PDP presidential candidate.

Justice Maldonado in the judgment pointed out that Tinubu did not adduce any sound evidence to upturn the judgment of the Magistrate Court which had earlier granted Atilku’s request before Tinubu moved to scuttle execution of the order.

“Given that the Nigerian court deadlines were fast approaching, the Court set an expedited briefing schedule on President Tinubu’s objections.

“The parties have now completed that briefing, and the Court has reviewed their submissions. For the reasons stated in this Memorandum Opinion and Order, the Court overrules President Tinubu’s objections and adopts Judge Gilbert’s recommended decision in full.

“The Court therefore grants Mr. Abubakar’s application under 28 U.S.C. § 1782.

“CSU is directed to respond to Mr. Abubakar’s subpoena in the time and manner provided for below”.

The issues raised by Tinubu in objecting to the release of his academic records include claims of privacy and that Atiku was on a fishing expedition as he can no longer use the documents to prosecute his appeal at the Supreme Court, since his case was not considered by the presidential tribunal.

However, Justice Maldonado stated that Judge Gilbert did not give a final judgment in the application dated August 2, but rather gave a “report and recommendation” subject to de novo review for any objected-to
portions.

“Of course, as will be seen below, even under de novo review, the Court ultimately reaches the same conclusion as Judge Gilbert and finds that the application should be granted. And further, as noted above, the Court only reviews de novo those portions of Judge Gilbert’s opinion to which a party has objected.

“For the portions to which no party has objected, the opinion is reviewed only for clear error,” the judge noted.

On Tinubu’s submission that the documents cannot be presented to the apex court to prove Atiku’s case, the court held that Tinubu failed to provide “any testimony or evidence indicating that the Court of Appeal decision somehow prevents the Supreme Court of Nigeria, in its discretion, from considering new arguments and evidence under exceptional circumstances”.

“Indeed, President Tinubu expressly conceded that was the case before Judge Gilbert, and he still does not dispute that this procedural mechanism for presenting evidence to the Supreme Court of Nigeria under “exceptional circumstances” exists. President Tinubu’s suggestion then that the evidence “cannot be considered under any circumstances” is thus unsupported by the record.

“This Court cannot and will not speculate as to Nigerian law and procedure. What the Court has before it is a sworn affidavit, which President Tinubu did not contest before Judge Gilbert, that the Supreme Court of Nigeria can consider new evidence under exceptional circumstances.

“In other words, it is undisputed that there is a mechanism by which Mr. Abubakar could potentially inject the requested discovery into the foreign proceedings. Whether the Supreme Court of Nigeria will ultimately allow Mr. Abubakar to use the documents, or whether it will consider them in its decision, are not questions for the Court to resolve,” the judge added.

Having held that the discovery is thus undoubtably of significant importance, as are the issues at stake, the court held that CSU has sole access to the discovery—there is no other way for Mr. Abubakar to access the sought-after information about President Tinubu’s diploma and education.

The judge further held, “These Rule 26 considerations therefore support granting the request for discovery.

“This Court will not obstruct the flow of discovery solely within the possession of a U.S. institution on a matter of such importance when the respondent stands ready and willing to provide it.

“Because the Court concludes that Mr. Abubakar’s interest in the discovery outweighs President Tinubu’s privacy interests, and because the Court need not concern itself with any burden to CSU in making the production, the Court finds the final discretionary factor weighs in favor of granting the application.

“With three factors weighing in favor, and one neutral, the Court finds on balance the discretionary factors support granting Mr. Abubakar’s application. President Tinubu did not specifically object to Judge Gilbert’s rulings with respect to the scope of the discovery requests, other than to generally state they are too broad, .ng reports.

“But even if he had, the Court independently finds the requests are appropriately tailored to seek relevant information. Mr. Abubakar did not object to the portion of Judge Gilbert’s ruling limiting the scope of his request for production four mentioned above, and at any rate, the Court agrees that asking CSU to conduct electronic discovery is neither justified nor feasible at this time.

“The Court therefore adopts Judge Gilbert’s ruling on the scope of the discovery requests. CSU must respond to Requests for Production Nos. 1 through 4, though CSU need not respond to the portion of Request No. 4 that seeks “all communications to or from CSU concerning the certification of such documents by Jamar C. Orr, Esq., during the period of August 1, 2022 to August 1, 2023.” (Dkt. 40 at 28.) As for the deposition, CSU must produce a witness that can address all five topics identified in the subpoena.

“For the foregoing reasons, the Court overrules President Tinubu’s objections to Magistrate
Judge Gilbert’s recommended ruling, and therefore adopts the ruling in full. Mr. Abubakar’s Application is therefore granted. In light of the pending Supreme Court of Nigeria deadline, represented to the Court as October 5, 2023, and based on CSU’s representations that it is ready to comply with the discovery requests and produce a witness, the Court sets an expedited schedule for completion of discovery.

“Respondent CSU is directed to produce all relevant and non-privileged documents in response to Requests for Production Nos. 1 through 4 (as narrowed by Judge Gilbert and adopted here) in Mr. Abubakar’s subpoena, by 12:00 p.m. (noon) CDT, on Monday, October 2, 2023.

“The Rule 30(b)(6) deposition of CSU’s corporate designee must be completed by 5:00 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Given the October 5, 2023, filing deadline before the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the Court will not extend or modify these deadline.”

“I kind of sent someone to the NDLEA before I got back. When I got back the next day, they said Mohbad was not there. They said Mohbad wasn’t among the people arrested.

“I didn’t bail Mohbad out anyway. It’s only Zino. So it was that paranoia…Zino was still in the NDLEA when he [Mohbad] made that video. I wasn’t around.

“I was outside Nigeria when he made that video saying if he dies they should hold Naira Marley and the Malians. So when I got back I asked him. When I got back, I met him.

“I spoke to trying to find out what was wrong but he said he didn’t understand and apologised. Yes. He apologised. I have a video on that.”

The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, has intercepted live endangered species of African Grey Parrots, Green Parrots and a hawk with a combined value of about N6,859,832.

Comptroller Timi Bomodi, Customs Area Controller, made this known on Wednesday.

According to him, the seizure was based on credible intelligence.

The animals were intercepted at the Gbaji checkpoint en route Benin Republic.

He said, “These animals were intercepted by our officers at about 4 am today; we got the intelligence that they were being conveyed in a luxurious bus all the way from Kaduna to Lagos, with the intention to take them out of the country to sell.

“As you may be aware, this is an illicit trade of endangered species, they are valued outside the country and we have individuals that are ready to go through a lot of risks to smuggle these birds.”

Bomodi restated the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to curb the menace of illicit trade in the country while also noting that two suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure.

“Part of the responsibilities of the Nigeria Customs Service as a signatory to the convention on illicit trade in endangered species is to ensure trade like this does not continue and we are hell-bent on seeing that things of this nature are not circulated.

“We already have two suspects in our custody, and the normal procedure for activating seizures of this nature with special regard to how these defendants will be treated is already in place”, he emphasized.

The seized animals were handed over to the Controller, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services, Sanusi Magashi.

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services will temporarily safeguard and nurture the animals before releasing them to the national park.

Crime / Woman In Court For Allegedly Stealing Iphone 14 Pro, Four Phones In Church by Esther125: 6:32pm On Sep 25, 2023
The Police on Monday arraigned a mother of two at the Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing phones during a church service.

The 26-year-old defendant, Chisom Nwogbo, who claims to be a makeup artist, is facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft, accusations she denies.

Police prosecutor Oyeyemi Adeniyi told the court that the case was reported by one Miss Esther Silas of Mana Apartment, Dawaki, Abuja, through a petition to the Commissioner of Police in Abuja on Sept. 13.

Oyeyemi alleged that the defendant on Sept. 10 disguised as a worshipper and went to Inspiration Life Community Church, located in the Jahi area of Abuja, to commit the crime.

He added that Nwogbo stole five phones; iPhone 14 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy A32, iPhone X5, Techno Pop 5, another Samsung Galaxy model and a black handbag belonging to the complainant and her friends.

According to him, during investigation, the phones were traced to Idu, Abuja, where the defendant was arrested.

He further explained that the black handbag, Techno and iPhones were recovered during a search of the defendant’s house.

“She also confessed to the police to have sold the other phones to one Paul, popularly known as Daddy Fresh, who is now at large.

“The defendant confessed to the police that she had been to five different churches within FCT and stolen phones of worshippers using similar tactics,” he said.

Oyeyemi said it was later revealed that the sum of N150,000 and N1.3 million belonging to the complainants were withdrawn from their accounts.

He noted that iPhone XS and Samsung, valued at N2 million, were also recovered from the defendant.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened the provisions of sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code.

The defence counsel, Ophie Ogheneyerowho, applied for bail for his client, stating that “the defendant is currently nursing a baby.”

He added that the defendant had cooperated with the police during the investigation and provided all required information without hesitation.

He promised the court that the defendant would not jump bail if granted bail, adding that there were reliable sureties waiting in court to stand in for the defendant.

He, however, urged the court to grant its client bail in the most liberal terms, reminding the court that the “defendant is innocent until proven guilty.”

The prosecutor did not object to the bail of the defendant but urged the court to use its discretion judiciously.

The Magistrate, Izinyon Ibironke admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties who must have means of livelihood and reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

She ordered that the sureties’ addresses be verified by the court’s staff and adjourned the case to 19th Oct. 16 for a hearing, NAN reports.

The Acting Comptroller, FOUC, DC Kayode Kolade, stated this on Monday in a statement made available to .ng by Jerry Attah, the Public Relation Officer, Custom FOUC in Owerri, Imo State capital.

The Customs boss, who frowned at the spate of smuggling in the zone, however, said that operatives successfully recovered the sum of Fifty-Four Million, Two Hundred and Forty-four Thousand, Five Hundred and Seventy One Naira from demand notices raised based on some infractions noticed, making a cumulative sum of One Billion, Six Hundred and Thirty-Four Million, Seven Hundred and Ninety-Four Thousand, Five Hundred and Seventy-One Naira (N1,634,794,571.00) only within the months under review.

“Other seized items include 1,329 bags, 50kg each of smuggled foreign parboiled rice; 5 cartons of DSP cough syrup with codeine 100mg containing 1000 bottles; 1 unit of armored Bullion Van; 761 jumbo bales of second-hand clothing; 883 cartons of various.

Kolade further expressed concerns over the smuggling of explosives even as the country continue grappling with the challenges associated with insecurity and called on smugglers to desist forthwith in the interest of humanity or have the law to contend with.

“ More worrisome is the interception of 9 sacks 50kg each of explosive materials (fertilizer, device cables, and superpower90 chemicals). We all know the security implications if these explosive components get to their destination unchecked.

“It may interest you to know that Superpower 90 is designed for priming applications and as a column explosive in surface and underground mining and general blasting. The high detonation velocity and the robust nature of Superpower 90 make it an ideal primer for the initiation of column charge. Let us not just imagine if dynamites and landmines are detonated using these items “, he said.

He congratulated the Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, on his appointment to oversee the affairs of the Service and described it as “well deserved considering his pedigree, dedication, and commitment to the service”.

“ We will all make sure he succeeds as his leadership style has started yielding positive results in our operations. I thank the Ag. Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi MFR, and the entire Management Team of the Nigeria Customs Service for their efforts so far in providing needed incentives and necessary logistics that aided our performance. Crime / Lagos Police Arraign Woman Over Alleged ₦‎2.4 Million Fraud by Esther125: 4:23pm On Sep 21, 2023
The Police in Lagos State on Thursday arraigned a 45-year-old woman, Victoria Modupe, at a Badagry Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N2.4 million under false pretence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant, without a declared address, is facing a lone charge of fraud, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, ASP Clement Okuoimose, said the defendant committed the offence on Feb.13, at about 8:00 am at Pota Community, along Mowo Ikoga Road, Badagry, Lagos.

He alleged that Modupe fraudulently obtained the amount from the complainant, Momoh Musa, to help him cast and lay interlock stones at his event centre.

He ruled that the sureties, who must be responsible citizens, should reside in Lagos State in addition to being gainfully employed in reputable companies or government establishments.

Politics / Tribunal Judgements: Upset In LP Over Massive Sack Of Lawmakers by Esther125: 7:37am On Sep 14, 2023
The Labour Party, LP, has emerged as one of the biggest casualties of the ongoing State and National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.

.ng reports that tribunals sitting in different states of the country have sacked many of the elected members of the party in Edo, Abia, Enugu, among others, over the discrepancy surrounding their membership of the party and their mode of nomination.

Rising as one of the main opposition political parties in the 2023 general elections, the LP was able to claim some House of Representatives and Senatorial seats in some states.

The milestone of the LP in the general elections was unprecedented considering that the party came from obscurity to gain popularity.

Many saw this as a revolutionary movement that captured the heart of the youths at a time Nigerians yearned for a change.

Before 2023, the Labour Party had existed for over 20 years as a pro-workers political organisation.

But it made inroads into mainstream politics within just eight months.

The party rode on the fame and acceptance of Peter Obi, its flagbearer during the general elections, by an overwhelming youth majority known as ‘Obidients’.

Obi lost the presidential election after having won 12 states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

He shocked many after challenging the two previously dominant parties, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to win a total of 6,101,533 votes.

APC’s Bola Tinubu won the contest with 8,794,726 votes, while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP came second, securing 6,984,520 votes.

The Labour Party, however, was able to win one governorship seat, with Alex Otti emerging victorious in Abia State.

The Party clinched eight senatorial seats and 34 seats in the House of Representatives.

With this number, the Peter Obi-led political party became the third most popular party in the National Assembly.

APC won 57 Senate seats; PDP, 29; LP, eight; Social Democratic Party (SDP) two; NNPP two; YPP and APGA got one each.

In the House of Representatives, the APC had 162 seats; PDP, 102; LP, 34; NNPP, 18; APGA, four; ADC, two; SDP, two; YPP, one.

The Labour Party was successful in states such as Enugu, Abia, Imo, Delta, Anambra, Plateau and even Benue.

However, as the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunals sitting in several states end their proceedings this week, the LP has been on the receiving end.

About 552 election petitions were filed by aggrieved candidates, and while over 150 of the cases have been decided, some of the cases were withdrawn by the petitioners.

The tribunals, across the country, will end their sittings on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

The three House of Reps members whose election has been nullified by the Tribunal in Enugu State are: Hon. Engr. Chijioke Stanislaus Okereke, representing Awgu/Aninri/Oji River Federal Constituency.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared that Okereke won the election but the Tribunal sacked him, declaring Chief Onwuegbu Anayo of the PDP as winner.

The second person is Hon Prof. Paul Sunday Nnamchi elected to represent Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency.

The tribunal declared Prince Cornelius Nnaji of the PDP as winner.

Also in Enugu, the Tribunal has nullified the election of Rt Hon Barr Sunday Cyriacus Umeha representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency.

The court said that he failed to properly resign his membership of the PDP before picking the ticket of the LP. It declared PDP candidate, Festus Uzor as the winner.

In Abia State three House of Representatives members, elected on the platform of the Labour Party, Ibe Okwara Osonwa, Emeka Nnamani and Munachim Alozie, have been sacked from the tribunal sitting in Umuahia.

A panel of the tribunal led by Justice Adeyinka Aderebgbe sacked the member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency, Osonwa, for non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022

The petition was filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the election, Chief Daniel Okeke.

In Lagos State, the Tribunal declared the election that produced Thaddeus Attah as the representative of the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency of Lagos as inconclusive.

Attah, Babajide Obanikoro of the APC and singer turned politician Bankole Wellington also known as Banky W of the PDP contested to represent the Eti-Osa constituency in the House of Representatives during the February 25 election.

It was, however, a different scenario in Plateau State, where the LP recorded a win as the Tribunal declared Hon. Dandereng Gideon winner of the Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency.

The Tribunal sitting in Jos sacked Bagos of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Also in Edo State, the Tribunal sitting in Benin City, on Thursday, dismissed two petitions challenging the victory of two LP candidates for lacking in merit.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party has expressed worries over how its members were being sacked by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in many states across the country.

Reacting to the trend, the party, in a statement issued by its National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, opined that the issue of “membership is an internal affair of the party beyond the jurisdiction of courts.”

Speaking to newsmen on the trend, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Aliyu Danko said that the party would do everything within the law to prove that its House of Reps members actually won their elections.

According to him, “We have seen the trend and interestingly at the Presidential Election Petition Court, we presented issues.

“But the same issues which were dealt with as pre-election matters are being used to discard some of our Reps members and we find it very appalling and unacceptable.

“At the moment, most of our members are resorting to going to the Appeal Court to challenge this particular ruling which we find erroneously unacceptable.

“Interestingly, these issues they accuse some of our Reps members of, we can say authoritatively that we have proof that these primaries were conducted and our candidates actually won their elections.

“But then, if there are orchestrated plans to reduce the number of our members at the National Assembly, it won’t work because we’ll challenge it with proven documents that we won our elections.”

Asked if there is the feeling among party members that there is a plot to weaken the party, he added, “exactly. That is what I’m alluding to.”

Mr Aloba, the father of late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Olademeji Aloba, aka Mohbad, has broken his silence on his son’s death.

He said he had a terrible dream about the singer two days before his demise, .ng reports.

The bereaved father who spoke on Wednesday shortly after his son was buried, recounted his visit to the singer days before the sad incident.

The interview clip has now gone viral on social media.

Mr. Aloba said, “Mohbad is my friend. I named him Olademeji which means my second because I’m the only son of my parents.

“We are very close. Whenever he sees me, he rejoices with me. I could even remember the last time we met before his death, which was on Saturday.

“I went to his house, we played together. He gave me food. He was even the one who served me. He joined me, and we ate it together. And when I was leaving, he gave me money as usual.

“The only thing I observed is that I dreamt concerning him maybe two days before the incident. In my dream, I saw someone who was holding a gun to shoot. In the dream, I was even thinking that maybe I escaped the bullet not knowing that something like this would happen to me.”

He said despite the allegations on social media, he isn’t suspecting anyone.

He, however, said he was a little concerned about the auxiliary nurse who injected Mohbad before he died, stressing that he wasn’t too sure of her qualifications.

Mr Aloba said he suspects that the injection might have complicated his son’s health.

Crime / Facebook Fraudster Bags Two-Year Jail Term In Kaduna by Esther125: 7:37pm On Sep 13, 2023
An accused person identified as Miracle Ezeochia has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for defrauding unsuspecting individuals on Facebook.

The Kaduna State High Court sitting in Kaduna on Wednesday convicted and sentenced Ezeochia for cheating by impersonation.

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had dragged Ezeochia before Justice N. U. Sadiq.

In a statement on its verified social media handles, EFCC said it received an intelligence report regarding the activities of some individuals suspected to be internet fraudsters in Kaduna, stating that the convict was subsequently arrested in a sting operation.

While analysing his device, it was discovered that Ezeochia opened Facebook and Instagram accounts with the profile pictures and names of Muhammed Malik from Qatar and Lucas James Williams, which he had used to chat with many people, one of whom he reportedly duped of $150.

According to the charge, Ezeochia, sometime in October 2022, in Kaduna, falsely presented himself as Muhammed Malik on Facebook, and, in such an assumed identity, cheated Malik Abdul Haseed of the sum of $150, an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 and punishable under Section 309 of the same Law.

Having pleaded guilty to the charge, the prosecuting counsel, M.U. Gadaka, asked the court to convict him accordingly.

Justice Sadiq convicted and sentenced the accused to two years imprisonment with the option of a N150,000 fine and also ordered him to forfeit a Tecno POP 7 PRO phone and $150 to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
