PoliticsRe: FG Suspends Importation Of Private Jets by etunoman76(op): 7:55am On Jan 21, 2013
Nigerian billionaires planning to buy private jets have been stopped from doing so as the Federal Government has suspended the importation of private airplanes, helicopters and other lighter aircraft into the country.

Sources in the Ministry of Aviation said the suspension, which took effect a few months ago, would continue until the formulation of a new policy on importation of private jets and helicopters.

The sources revealed that the new policy, currently being drafted by the ministry, would take into cognisance several issues regarding the importation of private jets into the country.

Top government officials, however, said the Aviation ministry had yet to determine when work on the policy would be completed and, as such, there was no definite date for the removal of the suspension.

The Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Joe Obi, confirmed the development.

Obi, however, stressed that the suspension did not affect the importation of commercial and passenger jets being used by domestic airlines.

He said, “The domestic airlines are free to bring in their normal passenger planes. But the suspension only affects private jets. The government is trying to work on a new policy for the private jet.

“You will agree with me that the current policy on private jets is old, and there is a need to renew it.  Pending that renewal, all applications for importation for now will have to hold on.”

Asked if there was a timeframe for the lifting of the suspension, Obi said, “There is no definite time for now. It depends on when the new policy is completed. Government is working on the policy. When it is completed, every body will be informed.”

It is unclear the new areas in the private jet business that the proposed policy will tackle as Obi declined further comments.

However, it was learnt that several applications for the importation of private jets, helicopters and other lighter aircraft had been piling up at the Aviation ministry for over four months now.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the development was already affecting not only some wealthy Nigerians, who had ordered for private jets, but also their appointed agents helping them to handle the purchase from foreign manufacturers.

“We have submitted applications to bring in some jets on behalf of some people for over four months now, but no approval yet. It is strange. Some of the aircraft are awaiting approval so that we can bring them in from the United States, France and South Africa,” an aviation expert and agent, who usually assists some wealthy Nigerians to acquire private jets, told our correspondent under condition of anonymity.

Some players in the private jet sub-sector said some of the prospective buyers of the private jets might lose the non-refundable deposits they had paid to the manufacturers.

Speaking to our correspondent also under condition of anonymity, a major private jet owner said, “Normally, before you apply for importation of an aircraft, you will have made your choice of what you want from the manufacturer. And to keep the order for yourself, you have to pay a non-refundable deposit.

“At times, the non-refundable deposit may be for 60 days, after which you are expected to pay the balance; if you delay too much, the aircraft may be sold to someone else and you end up losing that non-refundable deposit. With this suspension, some of these people that have ordered for private jets may lose the deposits.”

The Nigerian private jet market has been one of the fastest growing in the world lately. The sector has been witnessing tremendous growth since 2007.

However, it was learnt that the recent crash involving the Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Danbaba Suntai, had forced the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, to begin plans to tighten the noose on private jet and helicopter operators.
importation or procurement of private jets?
It's supposed to be procurement, but I stated it as I heard it and it's on 2day's Punch, which I haven't been able to lay my hands on, yet. However, I won't be surprised if a company in Nigeria is into the importation of jets, considering the huge market here
PoliticsFG Suspends Importation Of Private Jets by etunoman76(op):
Just heard on Rythm 94.7 FM, Abuja that the FG has placed an immediate ban on the importation of private jets. The bad news for intending buyers is that some of them paid significant amount of money as down payments, which are non-refundable. What do u think? Is it the right move or not?

Nairaland GeneralWEIRD!!! N5m For A Music Playing Coffin! by etunoman76(op): 10:23am On Jan 11, 2013
Inventor: 'I was very afraid of death and I wanted to lighten it up a bit'

It is often said that music can be good for your soul.

Now one inventor has used that philosophy to create his very own coffin, complete with a built-in stereo.

The CataCombo Sound System, which costs around £18,500, is aimed at music-lovers who don't want to rest in peace.

Soul music: An inventor has designed a coffin that plays music for customers who don't want to rest in peace

Going underground: Customers can programme their own playlists into the £20,000 coffin before they die
Customers can compile their own personal playlists before they die and the music will be streamed into their coffin.

And even when they have gone relatives can update the songs for their dearly departed via Spotify and a 'Catatomb app' using a touch screen built into the gravestone.

The music is piped into the casket via two-way front speakers, 4in mid-bass drivers, 'divine' tweeters and 'a hell-of-an-8-inch subwoofer.'

They are all powered by a custom 2.1 amp and fine-tuned to the coffin's unique interior acoustic space which is fitted with an external cooling system so they don't overheat.

And the beat goes on: Relatives can even update the songs for their loved ones via Spotify and a 'Catatomb app'

Sound of the underground: The inventor says the music is piped into the casket via two-way front speakers, 4in mid-bass drivers, 'divine' tweeters and 'a hell-of-an-8-inch subwoofer'
The whole system is also completely soundproofed so it doesn't wake the dead lying nearby.

Inventor Fredrik Hjelmquist of Stockholm, Sweden, said: 'Just because you are dead, you should not be deprived of the life-enhancing power of music.

'Some people believe that a beautiful melody can reach beyond our senses. Now you can expect nothing less than godlike comfort and heavenly sound from the catacoffin.

'This is designed to allow customers to embrace their passion for music, in this life and the next. Hi-fi is my biggest passion in life, and I will take it to the grave.

'Heavenly sound': The speakers are powered powered by a custom 2.1 amp and fine-tuned to the coffin's unique interior acoustic space which is fitted with an external cooling system so they don't overheat

Was afraid of death: Inventor Fredrik Hjelmquist (pictured) said he wanted to lighten up the idea of the afterlife

'People in Sweden are so stuck up about death - I wanted to give them something to laugh about. I was very afraid of death and I wanted to lighten it up a bit.'

He said so far he had only invented his own personal musical coffin - but was ready to take orders for more.

Father-of-two Fredrik, 48, said: 'This is genuine - I've already got my own ready, although I'm hoping I don't have to use it for a few years yet.

'My wife doesn't like to see it but I haven't yet put my final year on my gravestone.'

Fredrik said the coffin would be powered by an electrical supply to the tombstone.

The coffin is linked wirelessly to the CataTomb tombstone which comes with a seven-inch touch screen LCD panel, a 2.5 GHz Intel core processor and even a 4G Wireless internet connection.

His coffin features two tweeters, two mid-range speakers and a woofer with an amp in the gravestone linked by cable to the casket.

He added: 'I've already had interest from a funeral parlour who think it will prove to be a hit.'

Fredrik runs specialist hi-fi store Pause, one of the biggest in Stockholm.

When are we going to start having proper forensic investigations in this country? The Kidnappers left an incriminating evidence (the motorcycle) behind and the police can't do anything about it. CrimeIndia Gang-molested Victim Dies In Hospital by etunoman76(op): 8:12am On Dec 29, 2012
Delhi gang-rape victim dies in hospital in Singapore
2 hours ago

The victim died in the early hours of Saturday morning, a hospital official said
A female student gang-raped on a bus in India's capital Delhi has died at a Singapore hospital, doctors say.

The 23-year-old had arrived in Singapore on Thursday after undergoing three operations in a Delhi hospital.

The attack earlier this month triggered violent public protests in India that left one police officer dead.

As news of the student's death spread across social media in India, police sealed off large parts of central Delhi and appealed for calm.

The BBC's Sanjoy Majumder tweeted that the centre of Delhi resembled a fortress, with armed police and riot troops maintaining a heavy presence.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was "very saddened" and promised to channel "emotions and energies" into a course of action.

Six men have been arrested and two police officers have been suspended following the 16 December attack.

A statement from the hospital said the woman "passed away peacefully" early on Saturday with her family by her side.

"The patient had remained in an extremely critical condition since admission to Mount Elizabeth Hospital," hospital chief executive Kelvin Loh said.

Play
India's High Commissioner to Singapore, TCA Raghavan: "We extend our condolences to the family"
"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome.

"We are humbled by the privilege of being tasked to care for her in her final struggle," Mr Loh said.

A team of eight specialists had tried to keep the patient stable, but her condition continued to deteriorate over the two days she was at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, he added.

Officials from the Indian High Commission were also present when the patient passed away. The Indian home minister said the government had decided to send the victim overseas on the recommendation of her doctors.

Arrangements are being made to take her body back to India, said Indian high commissioner to Singapore TCA Raghavan.

"The requisite formalities for sending the body are being completed. The deceased and family members to be flown out in a chartered aircraft later today," Mr Raghavan said.

In a statement issued in Delhi, Prime Minister Singh said: "It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channelise these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action.

"The need of the hour is a dispassionate debate and inquiry into the critical changes that are required in societal attitudes.

"Government is examining... the penal provisions that exist for such crimes and measures to enhance the safety and security of women. I hope that the entire political class and civil society will set aside narrow sectional interests... to help us all reach the end that we all desire - making India a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in."

Rising anger

The victim and her friend had been to see a film when they boarded the bus in the Munirka area of Delhi, intending to travel to Dwarka in the south-west of the city.

The woman's case has sparked public debate as well as several days of protests across India
Police said she was raped for nearly an hour, and both she and her companion were beaten with iron bars and thrown out of the moving bus and into the street.

On arrival at the hospital in Singapore, doctors said that as well as a "prior cardiac arrest, she also had infection of her lungs and abdomen, as well as significant brain injury".

The government has tried to halt rising public anger by announcing a series of measures intended to make Delhi safer for women.

These include more police night patrols, checks on bus drivers and their assistants, and the banning of buses with tinted windows or curtains.

The government has also said that it will post the photos, names and addresses of convicted rapists on official websites to shame them.

It has set up two committees - one looking into speeding up trials of cases involving sexual assaults on women, and the other to examine the lapses that might have led to the incident in Delhi.

But the protesters say the government's pledge to seek life sentences for the attackers is not enough - many are calling for the death penalty.

Since the Delhi incident, several cases have been highlighted of authorities failing to respond to reported rapes.

On Wednesday, a woman committed suicide in the state of Punjab, after having tried to report to police a rape which allegedly took place last month, local media reports said.

At least one police officer involved in the case has been sacked, according to local officials.

THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a Colombian drug lord and seven Nigerians who specialise in the production of methamphetamine in some parts of the country.

Chairman of NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade who addressed newsmen in Lagos Thursday on the issues, also voiced concern over the health and security implication of illegal methamphetamine production in Nigeria.

This followed the discovery of three production factories in Lagos and Anambra States. Giade described the new wave of drug racketeering as sad and worrisome.

Our investigation has shown that the Colombian methamphetamine production expert, Gonzelo Osorio a.k.a Fabian Arcila or Baez Benitez Milan, was invited to establish three clandestine laboratories on a $38,000 (about N6 million) weekly contract. This is sad and worrisome. It is a clarion call on stakeholders to pay priority attention on this dangerous twist in our nations drug trade, he said.

Narcotics investigators have arrested seven Nigerian members of the criminal gang who are helping NDLEA in further investigations. The suspects are Gonzelo Osorio, Gabriel Onyebuchi Obi, Anthony Ebi, Olisa Cyprian Onyebuchukwu, Mickey Ezeokoli, Solomon Ogbonna and Chidi Alexandra Efeagwazi.

Twelve vehicles belonging to suspected members of the cartel have been confiscated. In addition, four houses have also been traced to the criminal group by the agency.

The undercover operation which led to the crackdown on the criminal gang, according to Giade, commenced in November 2011 when Gonzelo Osorio was contracted by a Nigerian drug syndicate to establish three methamphetamine production laboratories in different parts of the country.

He described the operation as one of the best coordinated in terms of duration, expertise and professionalism by the agency.

PoliticsControversy Trails Job Placement At Rights Commission by etunoman76(op): 9:05pm On Dec 28, 2012
AN alleged controversial recruitment exercise conducted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is causing unrest at the commissions headquarters in Abuja because it is said to be in breach of the provisions of the Federal Character Commission Act.

The Guardian learnt that about 253 people were hurriedly employed a week before the Governing Council of the commission was inaugurated. Under the amended NHRC Act, 2010, the council is vested with the powers to authorise employment.

Section 8 (1) of the NHRC Act 2010 provides: The Council shall have power to appoint directly, and either on transfer or on secondment from any public service in the Federation, such number of employees as may, in the opinion of the Council, be required to assist in the discharge of any of its functions under this act, and shall have power to pay persons so employed such remuneration (including allowances) as the Council may determine.

And Section 8 (2) provides thus: The terms and conditions of service (including terms and conditions as to remuneration, allowances, pensions, gratuities and other benefits) of the person employed by the Commission shall be as determined by the Council from time to time.

In clear violation of the Federal Character policy of government, however, the commission curiously allocated jobs and issued letters of employment to cronies without even inviting them for an interview.

Whereas the council was inaugurated on November 26, 2012, by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohamed Adoke (SAN), the employment exercise was done a week earlier. Documents obtained from the commission also show that no provision was made for the payment of salaries of the arbitrarily employed workers.

And curiously again, it was learnt that some new recruits were posted to states where the commission had no offices. An aggrieved male member of staff told The Guardian: There was no advertisement, no interview.

Technology MarketApple To Build A Smart Wrist Watch by etunoman76(op): 8:46pm On Dec 28, 2012
Apple is believed to be secretly developing a ‘smart watch’ with a touchscreen.

Chinese online sites have reported the computer giant is working with chipmaker Intel on a wrist-worn gadget that has a 1.5inch screen and uses Bluetooth to communicate with other gadgets, which could include an iPhone.

The ‘iWatch’ will go on sale next year, the report claims.

Chinese site Tech.163 claims Intel has developed a Smart Watch that Apple is interested in.

The in question has a 1.5 OLED display with indium tin oxide, or ITO coated glass, and uses Bluetooth to communicate with a user’s iPhone.

It is believed the iWatch will run a version of iOS, the same software as the iPhone and iPad, allowing apps to be easily downloaded.

Releasing a watch could also help it compete with Google, who claim they will release ‘Google Glass’, a headset with a screen, next year.

The rumours come after an independent attempt to create a smart watch, called Pebble, became a huge success online.

Its inventors used Kickstarter to try and raise $10,000 so they could develop it – but instead raised $10 million, and hope to begin production next year.

‘Pebble is the first watch built for the 21st century,’ say its creators.

‘It’s infinitely customizable, with beautiful downloadable watchfaces and useful internet-connected apps.

‘The watch will connect via Bluetooth, and alert users to incoming messages via vibrations – and apps bring Pebble to life.

‘Cyclists can use Pebble as a bike computer, accessing the GPS on your smartphone to display speed, distance and pace data.

‘Runners get a similar set of data displayed on their wrist. Use the music control app to play, pause or skip tracks on your phone with the touch of a button.’

CrimeIndia Tea Workers Burn Boss To Death by etunoman76(op): 10:18pm On Dec 27, 2012
Hundreds of tea plantation workers have set alight their boss's bungalow in north-east India, burning to death the owner and his wife, officials say.

Angry workers surrounded the bungalow at Kunapathar in Assam state late on Wednesday, following a two-week long dispute with the management.

Police said the incident happened after the management asked some workers to leave their accommodation.

More than half of India's tea output comes from 800 tea estates in Assam.

Local official SS Meenakshi Sundaram said some 700 tea garden workers surrounded the manager's bungalow on Wednesday evening and set it on fire. Two vehicles belonging to the manager were also torched.

The charred bodies of Mridul Kumar Bhattacharyya and his wife, Rita, were later recovered from the debris, Mr Sundaram said.

Police have detained three workers in connection with the incident.

Officials said Mr Bhattacharyya and his workers had been locked in a dispute for the past two weeks.

They said Mr Bhattacharyya had also faced protests at another tea estate that he owned two years ago.

In that dispute, angry workers set fire to his tea factory near the state capital, Guwahati, after he had allegedly fired on a crowd that had gathered near his house to protest against a reported attack on a local woman.

Several incidents of attacks on tea executives by angry workers have been reported from Assam in recent years.
