A 12-year-old pupil of a secondary school in Awka, Anambra State, Miss Chidimma Ukachukwu, has died after she was allegedly flogged by her teacher for failing to do her homework. A reliable source in the school told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Tuesday that the girl died on Thursday last week after she was flogged. The source explained that the girl fainted after being flogged severally by a female teacher and was subsequently rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where she died. The source also told NAN that the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Uju Okeke, then ordered the closure of the school as a result of the incident. A NAN correspondent, who visited the girl’s family home, soon after she was buried on Tuesday in Awka, reports that the family was in grief. The girl’s father, Mr. Simeon Ukachukwu, confirmed the incident, saying it was a sad development. He added that it was an act of God. But when Okeke was contacted, she denied ordering the closure of the school and said that the school was on midterm break. NAN investigation, however, revealed that schools in the state were not on midterm break. This fact was corroborated by an official of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Akwa South Local Government Area. The Chairperson of the union in the local government, Miss Buife Ndigwe, told NAN that primary and secondary schools in the state would go on midterm break next week. When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr. Ralph Uzoigwe, said that the matter had not been reported to the police, but promised that it would be investigated. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/10/teacher-flogs-12-year-old-pupil-to.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+Nigerianeye+(NigerianEye)&m=1 |

1forall: For me, the quoted portion appears to be where the understanding of the problem/potential solution lies.Is it now the job of journalists to investigate crime for the police? Mrs Ngozi can't sincerely claim she wasn't aware of the situation. I believe she reads newspapers and also gets online, she must have read or heard it somewhere before now. I guess it's convenient for her to be in denial. Now that she knows, I hope something is done, fast |
If these criminals are so bold as to perpetrate such crime with impunity, then I'm ashamed of our law enforcement officers, especially the police, standing back and coming up with all sorts of lame excuses. The areas mentioned are dark spots, so the police should work under-cover to arrest this menace before it snowballs into something else, except they are working hand in glove with the criminals |

Unlucky in love, but lucky in the lottery, a 22-year-old Hyannis man who was recently dumped by his girlfriend has won $30.5 million. And Sandeep Singh says he’s hoping not to get any calls from the woman who jilted him now that he’s a millionaire. “She broke up with me, but right now, I’m not really worried about it,” Singh said. “I was heartbroken at first, but now I’m getting over it.” Singh, who currently works at two jobs to help his family make ends meet, won $4 on a scratch-off lottery ticket and used those meager winnings to buy four quick pick Mega Millions tickets, including the winning $30.5 million ticket. Singh, who goes by “Sunny,” came forward with his mother, sister, and niece Wednesday to claim his prize. Singh elected to receive the money in a one-time, lump sum payment of approximately $23 million. After taxes, he should net about $16.1 million. The winning numbers, 13-37-40-46-52 and a Megaball of 29, were announced Tuesday. A winner in Fresno, Calif., and Singh are splitting the $61 million prize, according to the state lottery. But Singh said he hadn’t heard that the big winner was from Hyannis. He got home from work and checked the lottery’s website just before midnight Tuesday. “I was in my sister’s room on the computer reading the numbers,” he said at a press conference Wednesday evening at state lottery headquarters in Braintree. “I didn’t know what to do. I dropped the ticket.” Singh said it took a while for reality to sink in. He had been playing Mega Millions and Powerball every two to three weeks for about a year. He was still in shock. “I always told them one day I’ll eventually win and they never believed me,” Singh said, “but it happened.” It was Singh’s older sister who actually purchased the winning ticket, he said. “I thanked her so much,” he said. “Words can’t explain what she’s done for our family.” Singh said he will definitely share the money with his sister, who is his only sibling. He plans to pay off his mother’s mortgage, share the prize with family, and donate money to charity. “Just pay my mom’s house off, that’s the main thing,” he said. Singh has been helping pay his family’s bills for years, working multiple jobs to make ends meet. He started working at McDonald’s as a teenager. He said he will be giving his two weeks’ notice at Best Buy. Singh also works as a teller at Citizens Bank and said he will give his two weeks’ notice at the end of the fiscal quarter in December, according to the state lottery. “My dad was around and then he passed away my freshman year of high school, so that’s when I really started helping out,” he said. “My mom needs the help and my family could use it, so God definitely helped us out at the right time.” Singh studied computer science for two years at Cape Cod Community College and hopes to use some of the money to get his bachelor’s degree in business. Singh said he never thought much about a “dream school” but will look into the University of Massachusetts. Singh said he is unlikely to play the lottery again and is not yet sure how the prize will affect his life. “Hopefully for the better,” he said. The winning ticket was sold at AM/PM Convenience on Bearses Way in Hyannis. The store will get a $50,000 commission from the win, Beth Bresnahan, spokeswoman for the lottery said. Singh said he had no special method, lucky numbers, or favorite store. He just buys quick picks from whatever place he is near. “If I’m around, I have, like, a dollar to spare or two dollars, I’ll get a scratch ticket or something,” he said. Candido Oliveira, of Dorchester, was the last Massachusetts resident to win the Mega Million jackpot, said the state lottery. Oliveira won a $32 million jackpot on Aug. 19, 2011. http://www.boston.com/metrodesk/2012/10/18/jilted-young-man-with-two-jobs-wins-lottery/r2VMHgMrsCFVR3RRdnNXEP/story.html If u were the girlfriend, would u go back to Singh? If u were Singh, would u take her back? |

The yuletide season is quite around the corner and desperate measures have been devised by dare-devil armed robbers to rob their victims of their valuables in some parts of Lagos State. It was learnt that the men of the under world now disguise as beggars to snatch valuables from their unsuspecting victims. Their targets are often lone occupants of posh and exotic cars, they dispose them of their most expensive items ranging from laptops, phones, money and jeweleries. The hoodlums, who usually operate between the hours of 5-9pm are always armed to teeth with dangerous weapons such as knives and shotguns (carefully stuck in their dresses). It was also gathered that some of them had formed the habit of disguising as a handicapped and beggars to deceive their prey and rob them in the process. Areas in Lagos state that are well known for such ugly activities are Mile Two Bridge; Coconut and Apapa, all on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. Recalling, how he escaped death by the whiskers in the hands of beggars- turned armed robbers, Mr. Lucky Uduikhue, a managing director of an information and computer technology firm said he was robbed three times within one month in the same Oshodi-Apapa area. Disclosing their modus operandi, Uduikhue said the robbers usually threaten their victims saying , ‘I need N5, 000. If you respect yourself, bring the money. They will point gun at you.’ And failure to grant their request would incur their wrath; they would either vandalism the car of the victim or physically attack their target leaving him or her with injuries. “For many months now, motorists who drive through Mile 2 lose valuable items to robbers. As from 5pm, they have become kings of the road. Funny, they pretend as people begging for money but they end up robbing motorists of their valuables. If one fails to give them money, they would break one’s side screen and take whatever they lay their hands on and flee. This is a daily occurrence starting from Auto Wharf to Mile 2 Bridge up to Mile 2/Oshodi junction. Their target is always on big money, phones and laptops and they focus on big cars and vehicles whose drivers are alone. I have been a victim several times. I have reported several times to the policemen on duty at the Mile 2 bridge and have also called 112 police emergency number for the same complaint with both the police and the receiver of the police emergency number promising to take urgent action, yet nothing seems to have been done as the hoodlums are still operating uncaught and unhindered.” Another motorist, Jonah Okorie, who was once a victim of robbery attack on the same route expressed his anger over the nonchalant attitude of some policemen at the checkpoint who were busy arresting okada riders while he was being robbed and they never bothered about what was happening to him. Yet another victim of the trending robbery acts, who gave her name as Blessing narrated how she was dispossessed of her laptop, BlackBerry and telephone sets. “I can never forget that fateful day. It was early October. I was going to Apapa. At Mile 2, there was a hold-up. One man, dressed like a beggar came and begged me for money. I told him I did not have. I thought he understood me. Before I could move further, he brought a hammer and hit my side door. In the process, he made away with my laptops and other valuables. In fact, my entire day was disorganised because I lost a lot of data with the laptop,” she said. However, when contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer, Ngozi Braide, claimed that the police had not received such complaints. “We are not aware of that. Find out if the victims actually reported to the police and the station. All the same, the information is noted,” she said. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/10/16/how-robbers-now-disguise-beggars-rob-victims-lagos/ |
LETTER FROM THE FIRST LADY Michelle Obama opens up to ELLE readers about the future of American women and the five ways President Obama is looking out for women like you. BY MICHELLE OBAMA By Platon/Trunkarchive.com Dear ELLE Readers, When I fell in love with Barack more than 20 years ago, I knew he’d be a loving husband and a devoted father. I knew he shared my determination to make a difference in other people’s lives. But I never dreamed that he’d one day be president, and I know that he didn’t either. But four years ago—against all odds—I joined millions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life to vote for Barack. I didn’t do it just because we were married. I voted for him because I knew he was going to stand up for women like me—and our daughters, sisters, and mothers. When I look at all he’s done since that freezing day he was inaugurated on the Capitol steps—from health-care reform, to saving jobs, to fighting for women’s rights—I’m proud of how far we have come. And I’m determined to help him keep moving forward. (Visit Gottavote.org to find out how to register and where to cast your ballot.) Here are five reasons to vote for Barack when you go to the polls on November 6: 1. He’s fighting for equal pay for women. Barack was raised by a single mom who struggled to pay the bills, and by a grandmother who worked hard at her job but hit a glass ceiling and watched men she actually trained climb the career ladder ahead of her. As the father of two girls, he wants to make sure that all our daughters grow up with the same opportunities as our sons and are treated fairly in the workplace. That’s why the first bill he signed as president was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act to help women get equal pay for equal work. 2. He’ll fight for our right to make our own health-care decisions. Thanks to the historic health-care reform he signed, insurance companies will have to provide access to preventive services like contraception and cancer screenings without a co-pay. And they’ll no longer be able to make us pay more for health insurance just because we’re women. 3. He’s putting affordable education within reach. When Barack and I were first married, our combined monthly student loan payments were higher than our mortgage. So he understands what it’s like to be saddled with student debt, and he believes that education should not be a luxury reserved for the privileged few. That’s why he doubled funding for Pell grants, fought hard to stop student loan interest rates from rising, and worked to raise the standards in our K–12 schools so our students are prepared for college. 4. He understands why women’s economic success is important. Barack understands that women’s success in this economy is more than just a women’s issue—it’s a crucial economic issue for our nation. More and more women are now breadwinners for their families—so it is all the more important that we have a president who ensures that we have the good jobs we deserve and get the fair pay we’ve earned. 5. He believes everyone deserves a fair shot. Barack has never lost sight of the fundamental American promise that no matter who you are or how you started out, you can make a better life for yourself and your family if you’re willing to work for it. Barack wants to preserve that American dream for the next generation. And whether it’s investing in education or ensuring that regular folks don’t pay a higher tax rate than millionaires and billionaires, Barack is fighting to make sure that everyone in this country has a shot at success. So before you cast your ballot, I want you to ask yourself, Who’s looking out for me? Who’s thinking about my family? And I want you to know that the man I have loved for more than two decades—the man who has worked so hard for so long to move this country forward—is looking out for you every day. http://www.elle.com/_mobile/life-love/society-career/michelle-obama-letter |
In an attempt to restore discipline in the state civil service, Governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday sacked the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mrs Caro Edo-Osagie. This was confirmed in a statement issued to journalists in Benin City by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Louis Odion. Osagie was directed to hand over all government property in her possession and immediately handover to her subordinate within 24 hours. Though, no particular reason has so far be given for the sack. However, a source within the ministry, said her sack might be connected with the death of Mr Brown Atiemwen, who until his death was an actor and a staff of the Ministry. He had been diagnosed with intestinal problems and Osagie allegedly delayed the release of the sum of N150, 000.00 donated by the state government for his treatment. Atiemwen reportedly died on Sunday after he was unable to raise fund for surgery. His death led to a peaceful protest on Monday by members of the Artist Guild in Edo State. Meanwhile, the governor also announced the removal of 41 Zonal Inspectors, Chief Inspectors of Education and Local Government Education officers over non-performance and negligence of duty while the Vice Principal of New Era College, S.E. Akhabue, was demoted from GL 15 to GL 14 for being a “perpetual late comer.” Oshiomole’s Chief Press Secretary, Peter Okhiria, said his boss’s decision was the outcome of a performance audit in the state, adding that the administrative details of the change in the school inspectorate will soon be made public. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/10/18/governor-oshiomole-sacks-perm-sec-senior-education-inspectors/ |
| credits: Success in small business has much to do with avoiding operational mistakes. Okechukwu Nnodim writes on common errors committed by entrepreneurs in the small and medium business category Nigeria’s harsh economy has posed business planning challenges to many small and medium scale entrepreneurs. In a bid to thrive, some of these business entrepreneurs often commit errors. Below are some common mistakes made by small businesses. Lack of focus This mistake is common among small business entrepreneurs. Owners of businesses in this category often lack the resources to go after multiple markets at the same time. When they try to run businesses simultaneously, their marketing message gets muddled up most times. Experts say specialisation simplifies your life and maximises your profits. It is therefore important that you focus on a particular business for some time, as this helps you define your customer and minimise opportunities. Inadequate tracking Owners of small businesses often fail to monitor their key business indicators. Experts say it is vital to routinely monitor activities that make your business grow. They note that this helps the entrepreneur to identify problems in the making, adding that he can also track his lead generation activities as well as his production or service processes. Improper selling Some entrepreneurs lack adequate time to sell their products or services to customers. This is another mistake in business. The Managing Consultant, Simply Exponential Consult Limited, Mrs. ‘Fayo Williams, says sole practitioners without dedicated sales employees often make this mistake. She notes that adequate time should be given to selling in order to make expected returns. It is important for entrepreneurs to understand that businesses do not grow without new customers. Though this is tough, you must make the effort to contact new prospects each week. Poor planning This has been addressed in our previous articles on mistakes entrepreneurs make. However, it is worthy of note again. This is because without a plan you cannot know where your business is heading. You normally wouldn’t take a vacation without a plan, so why try to run something as important or complex as a business without a plan? Experts say the plan should be where you document the reasons for your major decisions. The entrepreneur has to monitor the plan to understand deviations in his business. The business plan helps you in getting loan from a bank and those who plan are generally more successful. In planning, you should also consider the budget you draw for your business. Many small businesses do not create a budget to set goals or plan key expenses, experts say. The key is to plan for profit and make sure your revenues and expenses are aligned to support that goal. Too much discounting Some entrepreneurs use this to compete, but the truth is that too much discounting may ruin a small business. Pricing is key in business and giving discounts at the detriment of ones business is dangerous. Why sell at a price lower than you have to? Experts say you should charge for your product or service based upon value to the customer rather than what you think they are willing to pay. Entrepreneurs must target the customers who can pay for the value of the produce or service which they offer. Understand your competition’s pricing put do not get into a pricing war. Ensure that you deliver a quality product and service at a reasonable and affordable price, not at a discounted amount that may kill your business. Misunderstanding your customers The inability to understand what your customers want is another common mistake small business entrepreneurs make. Without a clear definition of your customer, you cannot be focused, and with a clear definition of your customer, you are much more likely to be focused, experts say. As a matter of fact, you should describe your ideal customer profile in specific words that match their status. Neglecting customer feedback According to Williams, another mistake is not getting adequate customer feedback. Experts say the best customer is the repeat customer, and many studies show the repeat customer is the most profitable customer. They note that attracting new customers is expensive and can be time consuming. The entrepreneur should maintain a database of his client’s likes and dislikes and figure out how to sell more products and services to them. He should thank them and follow up in a non-sales mode. Failure to delegate duties As a business grows, it is important for the owner to employ more hands and delegate duties. Experts say the first employee mistake is not hiring employees to free you up to do what you do best. This is because your greatest constraint is time, and the best way to leverage your time is to hire employees and delegate work that can be performed by others. Poor technology Aside employees, the next productivity boost will come from maximising technology in running your business. If you are weak in the areas of word processing, spreadsheets, bookkeeping, and utilising social media tools, you should take classes, experts say. They note that you can outsource these tasks, as computer skills are becoming basic requirements for today’s successful business owners. Lack of funds Not having enough capital to support your business is another common mistake to avoid. It is therefore important to get the right funds that will drive the business till it starts making enough returns. Once operational, sufficient working capital is needed when customers are slow to pay, experts say. Working capital becomes even more important to support growth. So the entrepreneur must not outgrow his working capital capacity at any time. SOURCE: THE PUNCH NEWSPAPER |
Facts emerged yesterday on how Alhaja Muibat Salaam, wife of Osun State House of Assembly Speaker Najeem Salaam, regained her freedom four days after she was abducted. Mrs. Salaam, who was abducted last Tuesday in Ejigbo by gunmen, returned to Osogbo, the state capital, around 1am yesterday in the company of the state Director of the State Security Service (SSS), the Police Commissioner and the Speaker’s Chief Detail Officer. It was learnt that Mrs. Salaam was smuggled out of the state in a trailer and was rescued at Ogunmakin, a village off the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. A family source said: “A palm wine tapper on top of a palm tree noticed the kidnappers, who were between 28 and 40 years old, with a lone woman in the back cabin of the trailer. He alerted a vigilance group and they accosted the kidnappers. An argument ensued and resulted in a gun battle between the kidnappers and members of the vigilance group. “Two of the kidnappers were killed. Three were apprehended, but the rest escaped. Alhaja was rescued unhurt. A towing vehicle operator in the village phoned a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly and notified him of the development. “The lawmaker contacted Oyo State Assembly Speaker Monsurat Sunmonu, who contacted Najeem. Alhaja said her kidnappers offered her bread and Lacasera, but she refused to take anything all through.” It was learnt that three traditional rulers – the Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal; the Olufon of Ifon, Oba Abdulmaroof Adekunle Magbagbeola and the Elerin of Erin-Osun, Oba Yusuf Omoloye Oyagbodun II – were with Salaam at his home in Osogbo around 2:30pm on Saturday, when his Oyo State counterpart phoned and informed him that his wife had been found. A family source debunked reports that the kidnappers demanded N200 million ransom. Salaam thanked members of the Ogun State vigilance group and security agencies for rescuing his wife. In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Goke Butika, the Speaker said he was impressed by the people’s support to his family throughout the ordeal. He thanked Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola; his deputy, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori; members of the State Executive Council; traditional and religious leaders; Assembly members and the media. Salaam said his wife’s abduction has reinforced the threat of insecurity in the country and urged the relevant authorities to act decisively. The Osun State chapter of the Alliance for Collaborating Political Party (ACPP) has hailed the vigilance group that rescued Mrs. Salaam. In a statement by its Chairman Waheed Lawal and Secretary Rufus Oyatoro yesterday, ACPP urged security agencies to sit up and tighten security in the state. ACPP comprises nine political parties – the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP); National Conscience Party (NCP), Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Democratic Congress (ADC), Justice Party (JP), Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Progressive Action Congress (PAC) and the National Unity Party (NUP). Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji has congratulated his Osun State counterpart on the rescue of his wife. In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Rotimi Adebayo, Ikuforiji said: “On this joyous occasion of the successful rescue of the darling wife of the Osun State House of Assembly Speaker from the hands of kidnappers, I, on behalf of my family, Lagos State legislators and the management and staff of the Lagos Assembly, rejoice with Aregbesola, Salaam and the good people of Osun State. “We give glory to the Almighty God for preserving Mrs. Salaam’s precious life throughout the harrowing experience. That the Almighty Creator equally saved her during the gun duel between the kidnappers and members of the vigilante group confirms that all thanks and adoration must be given to the Almighty Allah. “Credit must be given to members of the Ogun State vigilance group, who displayed immense courage and patriotism to thwart the dastardly plot of the criminals. “Their act of bravery underscores the urgent need for our nation to embrace State Police, which is capable of checking the lapses that presently exists across our great country, due to the fact that a centrally controlled police force, as we have it today, cannot solve the myriads of security challenges that face us as a nation anymore. “Once again, we send our sincere congratulations from us all at the Lagos Assembly to Aregbesola, Najeem and the good people of Osun State.” http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/10/how-osun-speakers-wife-was-rescued-by.html?m=1 |

I'm a little confused here, if u work with a firm that gives out loan, at least that's what I deduced from this thread of urs; https://www.nairaland.com/993684/u-need-loan-16-interest#11477511 , then why do u need a loan from elsewhere, why not get it from ur coy? Just thinking aloud here |
The Federal Government is working on registering four additional airlines in a bid to eliminate the existing near-monopoly situation where two airlines dominate domestic services, the airlines are expected to commence operations next year. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has been advised to register airlines that meet the required guidelines without unnecessary obstacles, hindrance, or delays, since the monopoly in the sector is causing untold hardship and exploitation on Nigerians in the hands of airline operators in the country. The situation has worsened since First Nation Airways stopped operation and Dana Air was grounded. People now rush to buy tickets in snake queues, fares have skyrocketed, sometimes as high as N40, 000 for an hour flight especially in Abuja were the market is controlled by touts. With Dana expected to come back by the end of October and the introduction of Med View Airlines, very little difference will be made because they both have little capacities to meet needs of the population. Nigerians at present pay the highest airfares in the world, irrespective of the fact that, the country has a safe airspace with modern instrument landing system and radar. It is expected that the domestic market will develop, competition will grow within the industry, and fares will come down if government carries this plan out. The Ministry of Aviation is making plans to give single digit long terms loans to airlines to help them get aircrafts to boost the market next year, the plan covers even operators who have temporarily stopped services. The funds will be made available to them to get modern aircrafts from manufacturers, the Ministry of Aviation is expected to monitor every transaction that will be done using the funds. http://businessnews.com.ng/2012/10/12/fg-to-introduce-four-airlines-next-year-as-duopoly-bites-deep/ |
Hundreds of Nigerians are denied flight seats every week by Aero Contractors, which devised a novel system of airlifting passengers one hour before its advertised take-off time, Chinedu Eze reports One of Nigeria’s major carriers, Aero Contractors, has been leaving its numerous passengers behind. These are passengers who are due to travel, who have met all the conditions to travel and who arrive at the departure hall as scheduled. Most of the passengers, who are left behind, according to THISDAY checks, are those who booked their flights online, checked in online and printed their boarding passes. What Aero does is that when you check in online, you get your boarding pass that will give you your seat number, the time of the flight and the time you will arrive at the boarding gate. But one hour before the advertised time in the boarding pass the flight would leave. Notable Findings THISDAY investigations and this reporter’s personal experience disclosed that a day before the flight date, Aero will send SMS message to some of the passengers that booked online and leave others. Those who get the message will arrive for boarding at the new time, while those who depend on the time on their boarding pass will miss the flight, because they will arrive at the time stated on their boarding pass. The objective is that many people will book their flight online, pay for the flight and check in online but the capacity of the aircraft will not take in all those that booked online, so the airline uses such a strategy to drop some passengers after it has collected their fares. Since 2009 when Aero Contractors, one of the most successful Nigerian airlines, discovered that it was in financial straits it introduced some marketing strategies to boost its finances. The airline introduced online booking and described itself as low cost, although its on-the-desk ticket purchase fare is always the highest among domestic airlines. In June 2009 it introduced online check in and in a press statement released at the time the airline said, “Aero Contractors, Nigeria’s oldest aviation Company has launched online check in on all its domestic routes thereby allowing customers to head straight to the boarding gate, avoiding the stress of check-in desks. “The destinations include Abuja, Lagos, Benin, Warri, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Enugu and Owerri. Customers can check in online on www.flyearo.com seven days to four hours ahead of scheduled time of their flights,” the airline added. Personal Experience On September 20, 2012, this reporter booked a return ticket online from Lagos to Calabar and paid for it on September 21. The flight schedule was from Lagos to Calabar October 5 and from Calabar to Lagos October 7. On October 4 he checked in online, obtained his boarding pass which stated the time of the flight as 15:00, which is 3:00 pm Nigerian time and the flight number which was AJ 171. Part of the information contained in the boarding pass includes, “Please note that you have already checked in. You must be present at the boarding gate in the departure lounge not later than 40 minutes before departure. The time shown on the flight coupon (boarding pass) is the departure time of the aircraft.” With everything in place this reporter arrived at the domestic terminal by 1.55 pm and was making his way to the departure lounge when out of curiosity he stopped at the Aero check-in counter to ask whether the flight to Calabar, AJ 171 has started boarding. The Aero official looked at his watch and said that the flight had taken off. This reporter noted that the plane was supposed to take off by 3:00 pm. However the official insisted that it had taken off and asked THISDAY to meet the checking desk supervisor. The official directed him to go up to departure that the flight might still be boarding. He literally flew through the escalator to the security screening where he removed his shoes and after passing through screening doubled the stairs to the boarding gate to see the flight being towed to the taxiway of the runway by a push back truck. That was exactly one hour before the advertised time of the flight. The Aero attendant at the boarding gate was unperturbed. From all indications what happened was not unusual. She told this reporter to go back to the check in counter to reschedule the flight. Customers’ Reactions At the counter the check in counter supervisor told THISDAY and about 12 others who were kept away from the flight that he would reschedule the flight to Saturday, October 6, but many of them did not want to listen to him. They were angry for being short changed; for being deceived; and for being exploited. One of them, a young man lurched forward with rage towards the supervisor who quickly retreated behind the check in counter and began to explain that he could reschedule the flights. But the supervisor was being accused by the passengers that he sold those seats to passengers who bought tickets later on the cash desk and paid more for them. The supervisor denied the allegation and brought out a paper to show one of the passengers, to convince him that his own seat was empty because he did not board the flight, but he did not have his way. Four angry passengers rushed him and he retreated back again behind the counter. The passengers left behind were so angry. They said they were not interested in scheduling their flights and they were not interested in collecting back their money because they were apparently shortchanged. One of the passengers told this reporter that he found out that after people bought tickets online and later check in online and obtain their boarding pass, Aero would resell the tickets at high fares to those who arrived few hours before the flight take off time and who were willing to pay the exorbitant fares over the counter. So Aero would not send SMS to those who had obtained their tickets online but whose tickets had been resold by the airline. And that explains why the airline takes off one hour before the time it advertised on the boarding pass obtained online. But when this allegation was thrown at the supervisor he denied it. One of the passengers, a young man showed THISDAY the drugs he came to Lagos from Calabar to buy for his mother who was critically ill and who needed the drugs urgently for her recuperation. He did not know what to do. He was almost in tears, calling his people in Calabar intermittently and explaining that Aero had disappointed him; that he would not be able to arrive in Calabar that Friday. This reporter, who rebooked the flight for October 6, later found alternative means to Calabar and on his way he received SMS rescheduling the October 6 flight by one hour behind the initially advertised time. With the assistance of the Aero Media Consultant, this writer was able to get the airport manager of Aero in Calabar who he contacted for the return ticket from Calabar to Lagos on October 7. The airport manager told him that the flight which was scheduled for 16:45 (4:45 Nigerian time) had been rescheduled to 15:45; that is one hour ahead. THISDAY gathered that this is the way Nigerians are on daily basis shortchanged by Aero and every day at the Lagos domestic terminal passengers are always fighting with Aero officials, but the airline callously generates operational revenue from the hapless passengers and others. Airline Response In an interview few months ago, the Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Captain Akin George, told THISDAY when accused that his airline shortchange passengers through online booking that there was nothing like that; that the airline was highly reputed so it could not do such thing. “We pride ourselves on being sincere and truthful to the Nigerian public. By and large if you look at the amount of complaints that we have in relation to people who are travelling by checking online, it is less than .3 per cent. But the fact is that it is those that it affects that will come and make the noise, but those that benefit from it and travel have no need to come and say anything. On daily basis we have about 6,000 passengers a day,” George explained. Public Outcry Many Nigerians have reported similar issues about Aero Contractors. Last December after it cancelled its flight on December 22, 2011, on December 23 the airline wanted to abandon the passengers it cancelled their flight the previous day and wanted to airlift those scheduled to fly on that day. Some of the passengers became violent and started destroying things at the check in counter. It was then that the supervisor called on the management and it provided another aircraft. The two aircraft boarded passengers at the same time after the airline was coerced to carry out its obligation. NCAA Angle When the Dana Air flight 0992 crashed on June 3, 2012 many commentators and industry operators alleged that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) contributed to the tragic incident because it had allegedly compromised in its regulatory role. Although NCAA vehemently denied the allegation but not everyone was convinced. The regulatory body has always been accused of over-protecting the airlines at the expense of the passengers and that explains why Aero continues to short-change people every day and it has not been stopped by NCAA. NCAA cannot pretend not to know what has been going on because from various complaints from passengers, the regulatory body was aware of the antics of Aero Contractors but there has been no indication that NCAA had intervened on behalf of the customers. Earlier this year the issue of over booking passengers by Aero and devising ways to deceive the passengers came up when THISDAY interviewed the Director General of NCAA, Dr Harold Demuren. He explained, “Our consumer protection has been trying to see how to battle this. I cannot tell you how many times we had summoned Aero Contractors. We don’t say this on television. There is something we call no show and over booking. If you buy a ticket and you later change your mind we cancel you as no show. In that case there are no penalties. “So because of that airlines are allowed to overbook. This is because when they sell tickets to the passengers it is expected that five per cent will not show up. So when they have capacity for about 100 people they sell 105 tickets because they know that five per cent will not show up. This has never gone wrong. It always worked. “Sometimes they push it to 10 per cent. The danger of this to the airline is this: if all of them should show up, now you must compensate those ones you did not pick for the flight. That is the way airlines all over the world do. Aero has taken advantage of that and it is very wrong,” Demuren added. Matters Arising Before the latest antic, what Aero was doing was to close check in counters sometimes one hour or earlier before the flight time and when a customer comes after that the officials would tell that person that they had closed the counter for that destination. So an official of Aero who wanted to be pleasant would advise a passenger to come in as early as three hours before the flight if he wanted to board the flight. By adopting the latest strategy perhaps that system was not effective enough because frustrated passengers get angrier when you tell them to pay for no show when they arrived at the airport more than one hour before the flight time in domestic services. An insider familiar with low cost ticket sales online said that in other parts of the world the airline would on each flight advertise a number of seats which it would sell online at cheap fares and once that number of seats have been booked, the system would indicate that seats were no more available. In that way the airline would sell the number of seats both online and across the counter to the number of passengers that would fill the aircraft, also recognising, as Demuren observed, the five per cent extra sales in case of no show. The bride has every right to ask for something special, then if I were in her shoes I'd ask that the groom bought over Dangote group of coys, Abi no be gift. Either she noticed that the man was stingy and she wouldn't get something like a car from him after the wedding or she's merely being selfish/self-centered. Giving the condition of no-car-no-wedding is rather harsh. After wedding, it could be no-hummer4-no-bedmatics, then no-Lamborghini-no-babies The man must have gone to court for a restraining order, for according to him, she was already sending insulting and intimidating texts, he probably didn't want it to get to threatening ones. |
