Science/TechnologyMTN Recharge Card Headache!!! by etunoman76(op): 8:03pm On Dec 27, 2012
I bought a N400 MTN recharge card last nite, alongside other network. Loaded the others, but couldnt load the MTN. I thought it was a network problem, tried it a couple of times and I was barred. I called the customer care early this morning and one of the reps, a male, told me the card was invalid and that I shud return it to where I bought it. Just to confirm, I called back again later in the day and this time around a female attended to me and gave me a shocking news, that the card I bought and scratched myself just last nite, had been used by someone else since NOVEMBER 30! Wow!!! Unbelievable! She said there was nothing MTN could do about it.
When I got home, my neighbour has the same issue, his was N2,000 (5 pieces of N400). Funny enough, when I got home I went to the same person to buy another N400 worth and still the same problem. My neighbour told me that when he noticed the problem in the morning, he went to one of the MTN offices here in Abuja and he was told and shown on the computers that all the cards he bought were stolen/missing. Obviously, all the sets of N400 cards the woman bought were all stolen. And they were not removed out of circulation. Now, I got N800 worthless recharge cards with me.

Just to let the house know what's happening out there and to be wary, even though we can't be too careful considering where and how we buy our recharge cards
Foreign AffairsRe: US Senator Arrested For Drunk Driving : Can This Happen In Nigeria? by etunoman76(m): 12:13pm On Dec 24, 2012
Presently, it isn't possible. I know of a former NNPC GMD that drives around Abuja drunk and, instead of arresting him, the police will drive him home in that state. And the painful thing is that it happens over and over again. That is the type country we live in. Maybe the FRSC should take their campaign to the 'untouchables'

Nairaland GeneralEnd Of The World: The Mayan Calendar Explained by etunoman76(op): 1:42am On Dec 21, 2012
The Mayan calendar has become famous for its supposed predictions about the end of the world. Many people have jumped on the apocalyptic bandwagon in an attempt to use the calendar to gain a few minutes of fame. However, the alleged prediction has overshadowed the true relevance of the Mayan calendar, namely that it is a miracle of astronomy that measures time more accurately than the Western Gregorian calendar. Many experts have attempted to unravel and understand the workings, meaning and usefulness of the Mayan calendar. It is important to be very cautious in attempting to assess such a complex and ancient system. Here we offer an overview of the mysteries and certainties of the Mayan calendar.

"There is no prophecy about the end of the world in 2012 in the Mayan codices. Nowhere in the three codices have epigraphers found signs of apocalyptic prophecies related to a specific date. Anyone looking through the Mayan codices trying to find evidence for the apocalyptic prophecies, as followers of the esoteric field suggest we do, will be disappointed. "

How the Calendar Works

The Mayan calendar is actually three calendars. On the one hand, there is the lunar calendar (Tzolkin) of 260 days and then there is the solar calendar (Haab) of 360 days plus 5 unlucky days. Finally, there is the calendar round of 18,980 days - which is the union of the two calendars and is used to designate days. Every 52 years corresponds to a Mayan century, the way 100 years correspond to a century in the Gregorian calendar. The three calendars are correlated to the cycles of the sun, moon and Venus.

The Tzolkin

The Tzolkin corresponds to the count of days (the kin) of which there are 20. These are combined with 13 numerals to add up to 260 combinations. On closer examination, it becomes clear that the figure of 260 days relates to the length of human pregnancy and also to the whole process of planting and harvesting corn in the Americas in the period before the Spanish conquest. This reveals the close relationship the Mayans had with the stars, spirituality and mortality.

The Haab

The Haab has 18 months (uinals) of 20 days and one month of five days. Each uinal represents a spiritual task to achieve in order to grow as a person and gain a stone (tum) which symbolises evolution. It is mainly an agricultural calendar and that is why the division 18/20 marked agricultural activities from the slashing and burning of land to the harvesting of corn. The five remaining days are used to reflect on the actions of the year, correct mistakes and plan for the coming year.

Calendar round

The Calendar round is the combination of the Haab and the Tzolkin. The united calendars give a total of 18,980 days - a Mayan century which is equivalent to 52 years in the Gregorian calendar. Each time the cycle is completed, a spiritual and material renewal is experienced. Many Mexicans are still guided by this calendar to this day and rites and ceremonies are performed upon the completion of the cycle.

The Long Count and The End of The World

As incredible as it sounds, the Mayans also had a long count calendar to help them designate dates that went beyond the 52 year period. This calendar counted the days up to a period of 5,125 years. According to most sources, the long count started arbitrarily on 13 August, 3113 BC. However, other sources argue that the start date relates to the start of the long cycle of Venus relative to Earth, which ends with the winter solstice of 2012. This account represents the importance this planet has not only in Mesoamerican cultures, but in the Americas in general. It is difficult to find a pre-Hispanic culture that does not take Venus into account in defining its worldview.

The Kin and The Chances of Establishing Yours

Kin literally means sun and metaphorically it means day. We all have a kin that symbolizes our personality. There are 20 kins that when combined with a numeral give us the equivalent of our zodiac sign. Recent times have seen a dramatic growth of interest in Mayan culture. Most of the information relates to spiritual aspects and apocalyptic themes. Many people are using the Mayan calendar as a tool to determine what the Mayan equivalent of their zodiac sign is. While there is a real possibility of calculating your kin it is very difficult to do so without the help of an expert. There are websites and books, such as those by José Argüelles, which help you calculate your kin. However, it is worth pointing out that no expert has been able to establish with rigor and certainty all the dates involved in the calculation and for this reason the debate over its impreciseness rumbles on.

2012 - Myths and Realities
There are more than 1,800 books in circulation on the Mayans and their prediction about the end of the world. Most are based on false premises and spurious studies that only serve to misrepresent what was written on Monument 6 of the Tortuguero archaeological site in Mexico. The monument bears the famous inscription 21-23 December. Archaeoastronomy specialists agree that Monument 6 tells of a cycle of change, the end of the long count (union of the two calendars) that dated the Mayan calendar in 3114 BC to order and to count the days. If you thought about canceling your plans for Christmas, you may want to reconsider your decision.

Car TalkHow To Avoid Hidden Car Tyre Costs by etunoman76(op): 6:51am On Dec 14, 2012
Are you someone who looks for basic car tires that offer decent tread life at a low price? You might be surprised to find that the cheap options are off the table for a growing number of cars. With many newer cars outfitted with performance tires, you might be stuck paying more for tires that don’t last as long
Shopping for a deal on a new car is no longer just about the purchase price and gas mileage. Before you’re shocked to find that standard tires won’t cut it with your car, check your wheels along with the other important features. Money Talks News founder Stacy Johnson explains what to look for before you’re forced to pay more for high-end tires.

Here’s what you need to know about high-performance tires for your car.
Check tire needs before buying a car
When buying a car, it’s easy to overlook the tires. They’re usually already installed, and you may be more focused on other details, like gas mileage.
Tires are not all equal, with the “speed rating” (sometimes called “performance rating”) being one of the main differences. While each letter rating corresponds to a top speed the tires can handle, experts point out that increased speed rating often indicates a better-performing tire too.
Consumer Reports groups all-season tires into three main categories:
Standard: Also referred to as “passenger tires,” this range includes the “S” and “T” speed ratings. They feature the longest tread wear, with some models providing up to 100,000 miles of driving. They’re no-frills, which makes them ideal for drivers who just want a year-round tire that provides a comfortable ride and not much more.
Performance: These are a step up from the standard category, and are found on many new cars. With speed ratings of “H” and “V,” these tires handle up to 130 and 149 mph, respectively, while providing improved handling and grip. You’ll likely be limited to 60,000 miles of driving in this category.
Ultra-performance: This tier is what you’ll find on performance cars. With speed ratings of “Z,” “W,” and “Y,” they’ll provide the best handling. Expect the quickest tread wear of all three categories, as these tires are capped around 40,000 miles.
To determine the type of tire, take a look at the lettering on the sidewall. You’ll see a lot of letters and numbers, but what you’re searching for is the speed rating of the tire. Look for a letter following the two- or three-digit load rating, as shown in this graphic.
To find what comes standard on the make and model of a car, TireRack.com allows you to find the original tires that came on that car. After selecting the make and model, select “View Original Equipment Tires,” and results will pop up and show the factory-issued tires with the corresponding speed rating.
Is downgrading from high-performance an option?
If your current car or one you’re considering comes equipped with high-performance tires, whether you can swap them out for standard tires is a tricky question.
Consumer Reports does not recommend buying a lower speed-rated tire than what’s specified by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Tire dealers may feel the same way and even refuse to install standard tires on a car that calls for performance models. It’s possible that cheaper tires aren’t even made to the specifications required by the auto manufacturer, leaving you with only the expensive options.

PoliticsArmy Seeks To Join EFCC In Fighting Corruption by etunoman76(op): 1:13am On Dec 14, 2012
The Nigerian Army has promised to work with the Economic and Financial crimes Commission (EFCC) in order to ensure that the anti-corruption agency succeeds in its bid to make Nigeria free from corruption and economic crimes.

Provost 82 Div, Enugu Col. L.A. Bejamin (left) receiving a gift from HOP, Enugu, David Iloyanomon.
According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, the Provost, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Col. L.A Benjamin made the pledge when he paid a courtesy visit to the Head of Operations, South East Zonal office of the EFCC, David Iloyanomon on December 6, 2012, in his office in Enugu.

He said his visit to the EFCC was to assure the Commission of the Army’s willingness to cooperate in any area necessary to ensure that the work of crime fighting succeeds.

Col. Benjamin who pointed out that the Military Police does not condone any act of indiscipline whether inside or outside the barracks, said his office is willing to assist the Commission where it is discovered that a soldier is found to have contravened economic and financial crimes laws.

The Head of Operations in charge of the South East Zone of the Commission, David Iloyanomon, who commended the Provost and his team for the visit, explained that the EFCC is empowered by law to investigate and prosecute financial crime offenders with a view to eradicating such crimes.

He observed that the work of the Commission has helped to reduce fraudulent activities in Nigeria.

“Though we are doing everything to bring down corruption, we cannot do it alone. We need the help of the Army; we need all hands on deck in order to achieve it”, he said.

He lauded the military for the support the Commission has enjoyed from them over the years especially in area of tackling illegal oil bunkering.

CrimeWoman Smuggles Cocaine In Bosoms Implants by etunoman76(op): 12:28am On Dec 14, 2012
BUSTED!
A woman flying from Columbia to Barcelona was caught this week at a Spanish airport with bags of cocaine implanted in her breasts.
Spanish authorities released the picture of two bags containing nearly three pounds of cocaine that were later removed from the suspect's chest. According to CNN, the woman was traveling from Bogota -- a destination known for drug trafficking -- when a female officer noticed during a pat down that she had bandages and gauze under one of her breasts.
The suspect reportedly gave vague answers as to why she was in town. Police took her in and transported her to a hospital.
"There, a medical team extracted a bag-shaped prosthesis from each breast containing a white pasty substance," the Spanish interior ministry told CNN.
Pure cocaine is valued at about $35,000 a pound, Fox 11 reports.
The unidentified woman was taken to jail on drug trafficking charges.

Nairaland General8 Crazy End Of The World Theories! by etunoman76(op): 10:48pm On Dec 13, 2012
Dec. 21, 2012 is the last day of the Mayan calendar, when an ancient civilization possibly predicted the world would end, perhaps with solar storms and catastrophic tidal effects. Or maybe the Earth’s axis will suddenly shift. And if that doesn’t happen, there is still planet Niburu, roughly four times the size of the Earth, and headed straight for us.
Of course, none of this is going to happen. And you don’t have to take my word for it – NASA has poked holes in all of these theories. And if you’re still worried about the Mayans: The Telegraph says an even older Mayan calendar has been found in Guatemala. This one goes on for 6,000 years, ending hundreds of years from now.
But if these facts don’t put you at ease, perhaps this will: The fear that the world is ending is hardly new. Here are some examples from the recent past…
1. Attack by the Zeta Reticuli
In 1993, Nancy Lieder realized she could talk to our (very) distant neighbors, the Zeta Reticuli, through an implant in her brain. According to her bio found on her website, ZetaTalk, Lieder has been a contactee almost her entire life. Through hypnotic recall, Lieder realized she has a dozen hybrid children (read: human and alien babies). She is also a communicator for the Zeta Reticuli.
Lieder first predicted that in May 2003, the Zeta Reticuli would come crashing through our solar system, causing havoc on earth. When that didn’t happen, Lieder insisted she made up the prediction to “fool the establishment,” according to NJ.com.
Why it didn’t happen: Lieder isn’t the first person to insist she has contact with a planet no one has ever heard of. But organizations like NASA have powerful tools. They’d spot a planet (or its warships) coming at us early on, so an alien sneak attack is unlikely.
2. Harold Camping’s rapture
Most religions believe in the possibility of an apocalypse or rapture. Many spiritual leaders think this day will ultimately come, and some think it will be soon. Very few, however, actually pick a day and set out to warn the masses that the end is near.
Enter Harold Camping, one of the founders of the Family Radio Network of Christian stations. Camping thought he knew when the end of the world would come: May 21, 2011. Broadcasting this message on the dozens of stations that carried his message would have been bad enough, but he didn’t stop there. According to Reuters, Camping and his supporters posted 2,000 billboards across the country. One of his supporters, Robert Fitzpatrick, spent $140,000 on subway posters in New York. Volunteers started handing out pamphlets in other countries. Believers took to their RVs and headed for California to meet up with Camping.
Why it didn’t happen: It’s unlikely that anyone will pinpoint an exact day when the world will end because days aren’t exact. Courtesy of the International Date Line, there are two calendar days happening simultaneously on our planet. Traveling westbound across the IDL adds 24 hours to a day, and traveling eastbound repeats the previous day.
In other words, half the world’s today is the other half’s yesterday, making it kind of tough to pinpoint a specific day we’re all going to die.
3. Nuclear war
The Cold War advanced the idea that countries could drop nuclear bombs on each other until there was nothing left of the world.
Between 1940 and 1990, hordes of people believed in the possibility, with good reason. There was a military strategy in effect called Mutual Assured Destruction or MAD, promising that whoever struck first would get hit back without hesitation.
For many people, the mass panic faded with the end of the Cold War in the 1990s, but some still believe that having access to these weapons may still lead to the world’s untimely destruction. In 2008, Wired wrote about a study on the possible outcomes of small-scale nuclear war. According to the study, nuclear bombs would tear holes in the ozone, cooling the planet and limiting our protection from UV rays. As a result, crops could die, millions could starve, and skin cancer rates could skyrocket.
Why it won’t happen: While nuclear war is a possibility, to date only two atomic bombs have been used in wartime. Since then, more than 100 parties have signed the Treaty of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, agreeing not to use them in war.
4. The return of our alien creators
There are plenty of UFO-based religions floating around. One of the largest, Raelism, was founded by Claude Vorilhon. In his book, The Message Given to me by Extraterrestrials, Vorilhon explains that the idea for his religion happened when he found a spaceship with a human-looking alien inside. The alien told him that humankind was actually created by an alien race, the Elohim.
Raelians believe that the Elohim are recording information about us right now. One day, they’ll bring people back from the dead and reward or punish them for how they acted in life. Basically, it’s the rapture with supercomputers and zombies.
Why it won’t happen: While there are plenty of theories about the creation of human life, most scientists agree that we weren’t dropped off here by aliens, nor would many find it likely that aliens will show up some day to raise the dead.
5. Gray goo
In the future, nanotechnology – tiny robots as small as an atom – might be commonplace. In theory, they could be programmed to collect materials and transform them into products, basically automatically creating things like TVs, computer chips, bicycles, or anything else without the help of human hands. Of course, to be truly efficient, these nanobots would also need to be able to self-replicate. And therein lies the problem.
Some scientists predict that these nanobots could go overboard, replicate until they outnumber us, and then start sucking up all our natural resources. They’ve dubbed these future leeches “gray goo.” According to The New York Times, a former M.I.T. researcher, Eric Drexler, predicted a grisly outcome for the world if this gray goo ever took over.
Gray goo is what would happen if one of the auto-assemblers went haywire and the self-replication never stopped. According to Drexler’s calculations, in just 10 hours an unchecked self-replicating auto-assembler would spawn 68 billion offspring; in less than two days the auto-assemblers would outweigh the earth.
Why it won’t happen: There are dozens of theories about robots outsmarting their creators and overtaking the world, but it isn’t likely. After all, who would be smart enough to build something that advanced, but dumb enough to forget the safety switch? If we do ever start using nanobots, we’ll probably have safety precautions in place.

6. Asteroids hitting the Earth
Basically since we’ve known asteroids existed, someone has been convinced there was one headed straight for us, destined to blow our planet to bits.
For example, in 2004, scientists found Apophis, a 390-meter-wide asteroid. According to The Guardian, NASA predicted that if Apophis collided with Earth, the energy released would be 1,000 times greater than the nuclear blast over Hiroshima, Japan, in WW2 and that everyone on the planet would feel the effects. Astronomers thought that Apophis had a 1 in 37 chance of colliding with Earth in 2029.
Then they changed their minds. Now most scientists agree that Apophis will pass by us in 2029. Some say, however, it could still come back in 2036. If that happens, the collision could be devastating.
Why it won’t happen: Asteroids do exist and do collide with things in space. But the odds of being large enough to collide with Earth and destroy it aren’t good. Take Apophis, for example – in order to make a direct hit in 2036, the asteroid would have to pass through at a very specific spot. The Guardian says the odds of that happening are about 1 in 5,500.
7. Pole shift
Some people believe that 2012 will be the year when the Earth’s magnetic poles will suddenly and drastically reverse. It is known as a pole shift, and when it happens entire continents could move suddenly or even sink into the ocean. But it doesn’t end there.
While we’re all spinning and sinking, there will also be epic natural disasters. Tsunamis in the ocean, massive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, you name it. The combination of continental shifts on the earth’s core and widespread natural disasters will lead to the end of life as we know it.
Why it won’t happen: According to Yale Scientific, a reversal of the Earth’s magnetic poles is a natural phenomenon that occurs about every 250,000 years. And while there is evidence of a 10 percent decline in the Earth’s magnetic field since the 19th century, there is no scientific evidence that a sudden pole shift will occur, or that it would even harm people if it did.
8. The modern Ice Age
In 1997, Richard Noone published a book entitled 5/5/2000 Ice: The Ultimate Disaster. In the book, Noone predicted the earth was headed for a second ice age, speculating the polar ice caps would start getting bigger. At the same time, all of the planets would fall into alignment, which would somehow make the ice shift from north to south, starting another ice age.
Noone’s book covers a lot of ground – everything from the Egyptian Pyramids to the Knights Templar. He was convinced that practically every conspiracy theory on record was linked to May 5, 2000, when ice would spell the end of the world for us.
Of course, May 5, 2000 came and went without massive polar ice caps or the resurrection of the Knights Templar. I’m pretty sure the pyramids didn’t do anything special that day either.
Why it didn’t happen: Most scientists agree that the Earth is actually heating up, not cooling. It is more likely that the North and South Poles will slowly start to melt, rather than suddenly become disastrously large. Of all the environmental concerns we could have, a rapid ice age that has something to do with planetary alignment and the Egyptian pyramids isn’t one of them.

i am not in any way affiliated to them, got a text advertising this vacancy and i came here to post it like i always do.
