Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali is so ill he could be dead within days, his brother has warned. Rahman Ali said the former heavyweight champion cannot speak and no longer recognises him. Rahman fears his 71-year-old brother – known as The Greatest – may not survive the summer. He told The Sun, “He’s in a bad way. He’s very sick. “It could be months, it could be days. I don’t know if he’ll last the summer. He’s in God’s hands.” Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1984 but remained active for many years and made a moving appearance at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games where he lit the flame. However, he was seen looking particularly thin and frail at the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony where he was helped across the stage by wife Lonnie. Rahman has accused his sister-in-law, who has been married to Ali for 26 years, of refusing to let the family visit the ailing champion. Rahman, who was also a professional boxer, said he last saw his brother in July at the Sports for Peace Gala in London and is only allowed to speak to him over the phone. The brothers, born Cassius and Rudolph Clay, grew up together in Louisville, Kentucky. Ali’s most recent public health scare was December, 2011, when the champion was taken to hospital after falling unconscious. Emergency services were called days after Ali made a frail appearance at the funeral of fellow boxing great Joe Frazier. He was treated for dehydration after collapsing at his 6,000 sq ft estate in Arizona. Rahman told The Sun from his flat in Louisville that before Ali’s health deteriorated, he said he was in no pain and was proud of his achievements. Rahman, who has suffered recurrent strokes following his own boxing career, said he feels distraught at being cut from his brother’s life. Father-of-nine Ali wants a Martin Luther King quote on his gravestone, according to Rahman. The quote is: “I tried to love somebody; I did try to feed the hungry. “I did try, in my life, to clothe those who were naked. I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. The Greatest.” Wife Lonnie refused to comment on the claims. http://www.punchng.com/sports/muhammad-ali-could-be-dead-in-days-brother/ |

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21303390 Harvard University has imposed academic sanctions on dozens of students for cheating in a final exam, a dean said in an email to students. "More than half" of 125 students under investigation were asked to leave for a period of time; others face probation. An inquiry began when a tutor noticed identical answers to a take-home exam for an undergraduate politics course. The review expanded to include nearly half the 279 students enrolled in the course, the Harvard Crimson said. Correspondents say there have been complaints that exam rules for the Introduction to Congress class were unclear, and over the university's handling of the investigation. 'Communal reflection' In an email to members of the university, Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Michael Smith said the cases had now been resolved. "Somewhat more than half" of the cases resulted in a request to withdraw, he said. Of the remaining cases, about half the students were placed on disciplinary probation and the rest were exonerated. Some of those ensnared in the scandal were members of Harvard sports teams. Two basketball co-captains have been dropped from the team, while earlier reports in the university newspaper suggested football, baseball and ice hockey players could also have been involved. The dean added that an internal committee would put forward recommendations on how to promote honesty within the institution. "This is a time for communal reflection and action," Mr Smith said. "We are responsible for creating the community in which our students study and we all thrive as scholars." Over 1000 Nigerian footballers and students who left Nigeria in search of greener pastures in Europe and the Middle East are now languishing in Egyptian prisons, the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora heard in Abuja yesterday. A 53-year-old Nigerian, who spent 21 years in a Cairo prison, Mr. Ganiyu Shola, told the Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa-led committee yesterday when he appeared before the committee. He narrated the gloomy picture of how young Nigerians were being lured into leaving home by human traffickers only to be abandoned in Egypt. Shola blamed officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Cairo for not leaving up to expectations and for failing to approach the Egyptian authorities to secure their release. He said currently, there are four Nigerians who have spent between 21 to 23 years in the Cairo prison and were convicted without legal representation. “Human traffickers lured them to go to Israel from Egypt and hundreds of them between the ages of 16-20 have died while crossing the border to Israel. They are adventurers footballers, students and commercial sex workers,” He called on the Federal Government to secure their release because they usually get stranded and the Egyptian police would arrest them and throw them into the prisons. Rep. Dabiri-Erewa promised to intervene in the matter. http://dailytrust.com.ng/index.php/news-news/49162-1-000-nigerians-in-egyptian-prisons |
