Politics / Enugu Guber: Chime Knows Fate Tomorrow by EVANS4GOD(m): 12:28am On Feb 15, 2011
Legal fireworks resumed yesterday in a Federal High Court where a governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Anayo Onwegbu and 38 others are challenging the candidature of the incumbent Governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime who is running for a second term.

Meanwhile, the PDP yesterday asked the court to vacate its order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from publishing the name of the Governor of Enugu State Mr. Sullivan Chime as its candidate in the April election.

Counsel to the PDP, Chief Olusola Oke, told the court that his client had indeed sent the name of Chime to INEC for publication on January 27; two days before the ex-parte order of January 30 came, restraining INEC from recognized Chime.

Justice Abdul Kafarati had while ruling on the exparte application restrained the PDP from submitting the name of Chime as its candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in the state pending the determination of an action challenging his alleged nomination.

In the exparte application argued by Alex Izinyon (SAN]) on behalf of a PDP governorship contestant in the state, Anayo Onwegbu and 38 others, the court granted an interim order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting or validating Mr. Chime’s name as the party’s standard bearer for the governorship poll.

Thirty eight plaintiffs also got an order temporarily halting the electoral body’s dealing with alternative list of names. The trial judge, Abdu Kafarati, ordered “that the first defendant (PDP) is hereby restrained in interim from submitting any other names, list of names other than the names contained in the list of candidates dated 17th January, 2011 which includes the plaintiffs as the gubernatorial candidate and deputy gubernatorial candidate for Enugu State 2011 respectively and first defendants for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly in Enugu State for submission to the second defendant (INEC) pending the determination of the motion on notice.”

Kafarati, will on February 16 to deliver ruling on whether to vacate its interim injunction restraining INEC from publishing Chime’s name as PDP flag
At the resumed hearing of the suit, both parties argued their applications and adopted their written addresses.
INEC through its counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, argued that the electoral body’s decision to publish governor Chime’s name was not out of interest but for the fear of having the PDP shutout from participating in the April polls.
He further submitted that as at the time INEC was to published the name, it was Chime’s name that was in the listed submitted to it by the headquarters of the PDP, therefore could not have published any other name that was not given by the party.
Politics / Tension In Enugu As Inec Publish Onwuebu by EVANS4GOD(m): 12:16am On Feb 15, 2011
There was tension and confusion in Enugu yesterday following the publication of the name of Mr. Anayo Onwuegbu, as the Enugu PDP gubernatorial candidate for the April general elections, by the Independent Electoral Commission INEC.
The listing of Onwuegbu as candidate produced by the former PDP national chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo’s faction of the party in the state was coming few days after the PDP leadership at a zonal rally in Enugu handed over the party’s flag to Governor Sullivan Chime.

The development led to confusion as people
trooped out to INEC office along Achi Street, Independence Layout to see for themselves and confirm the true situation of things.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had
last month restrained the the PDP and INEC from submitting and publishing the name of Governor Sullivan Chime as the party’s candidate for the April governorship candidate pending the determination of the suit filed by his rival for the ticket, Mr. Anayo Onwuegbu.

The court president over by Justice Kafarati also ordered INEC and PDP
to recognize the plaintiff as the PDP Governorship candidate in Enugu State pending the determination of his suit.
But in defiance to the order, INEC displayed Chime’s name as the PDP Candidate f on Monday last week.
Afraid to incur the wrath of the court, the electoral body subsequently withdrew
the entire list of gubernatorial candidates of all the parties the following day.

Although the list for the National Assembly candidates had not been displayed at their various constituencies in accordance with the constitution, a source in INEC told our correspondent that the names of Deputy Senate
President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu and Senate Committee chairman on
Information, Ayogu Eze were also replaced with that of the former Director General of Nigerian Maritime Authority (NMA), John Egesi and a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Frank Ugwu.

When contacted, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Chief Josiah Uwazuruonye said the pasting of Onwuegbu’s name was sequel to the court restrain it from recognizing Chime as the candidate of the PDP for this year,s election in the state.
“INEC displayed Onwuegbu’s name because of a court oder. The pasting of the name
is more or less to obey the court order in the interim, if the court decides otherwise tomorrow, INEC would recognize whoever the court picks.”
Reacting on behalf of the government, the Senior Special Assistant to
Governor Chime on Media, Barrister Chukwudi Achife said it was absurd
and cannot stand, adding that it would be vigorously and seriously challenged.
Politics / State Police, The Answer To Insecurity In Nigeria by EVANS4GOD(m): 2:12am On Feb 14, 2011
State police, the answer to insecurity in Nigeria
Following the increased spate of insecurity in Nigeria, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has advocated state police, insisting that unitary police system cannot provide adequate security for Nigerians and their property.

Ekweremadu, who spoke at the weekend in a lecture he delivered at Enugu State Sports Club Complex insisted that the unitary police system had failed Nigeria. He said his stand on the imperative of state police in Nigeria had never been hidden because “it is not just a security issue but touches also on the character of federalism, especially the devolution of powers between the center and the peripheries.”

His words: “Instructively, I am not alone on this matter. Even the ordinary Nigerians appreciate the fact that unitary police system has not and cannot provide adequate security for Nigerians and their property. At present, the 1999 Constitution provides for a single Nigeria Police Force. Section 214(1) of the Constitution says, “there shall be a police force for Nigeria, which shall be known as Nigeria Police Force and subject to the provisions of the this section, no other police force shall be established for the federation or any part thereof.

“Sub Section 2 of the Section 215 provides that, “The Nigeria Police Force shall be under the command of the inspector general of police and contingents of the Nigeria Police Force stationed in a state shall, subject to the authority of the inspector general of police be under the command of the commissioner of police of that state.”

He lamented that even in a situation where the state was burning “under his/her nose, the so-called chief security officer cannot marshal directives to a divisional police officer because the later has to clear with the assistant inspector-general (AIG) in charge of his/her zonal command. The AIG must in turn clear with the inspector general who would also clear with the commander in chief while things get out of hand.”

He stated that it was no longer news that the centralised police force was disgustingly understaffed, lamenting the situation where a population of about 140 million people was policed by less than 400,000 policemen and women “ is to say the least, a recipe of disaster and definitely miles off the internationally acceptable benchmark.”

On the foot of the ubiquitous hill on the outskirts of Nsukka Urban, sprawls Alor-Uno, a thinly populated rural community in Nsukka Local Government Area Enugu State. Recently, the police in Nsukka stumbled on a strange find while quelling a clash between some members of the community who attempted to sell a hill inhabited by some adventurous villagers since 1982.

The sale of hills is now the order of the day in Nsukka and one costs a fortune.? an attempt to force the natives inhabiting the hill allegedly set the area on fire, thereby causing grave damage to houses, economic crops and farmland belonging to the hill inhabitants. Consequently, the hill dwellers petitioned the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Jacob Muri to come to their aid.

The petitioner in the petition dated January 18, 2011 claimed that a group of their kinsmen had on January 18, at about 9:00a.m caused arson, malicious damage and threat to property and their lives.
The cat was let out of the bag when Muri led a team of his men to the community on receiving a distress call that the alleged arsonists had barricaded the road armed with dangerous weapons and charms preparatory to invade the hill dwellers and force them out of the hill to pave way for its immediate sale.

Daily Sun gathered that the police overpowered them and they retreated to the Obunetiti area of the troubled community where the shrine of the dreaded Adoro goddess is situated.
The police chased them into the shrine and arrested a dozen youths and recovered a large quantity of assorted types of charms, and offensive weapons.

According to an eyewitness account, it was in the cause of this expedition that the police discovered a “bush bar” where a notorious hemp dealer lives and carries on the illicit business day and night.
“He commands a good patronage,” said a villager pleading anonymity, adding that car owners and important personalities park their cars few meters to the bush bar as the road was deliberately made inaccessible to the bush-bar to avoid police sudden invasion.
Daily Sun also gathered that the land speculators had earlier succeeded in selling one of the hills at a whooping sum of N5 million and shared the proceeds among themselves.

According to the Divisional Police Officer, he had earlier received a petition from some villagers alleging that their property were set ablaze including economic trees, farmland, houses even as their lives were being threatened.
“I immediately went to the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Nwaeze to tell him about the petition, to seek a way to avoid a possible reprisal and breakdown of law and order.

“I urged him to convene immediately meeting of his cabinet peacefully. I was surprised to receive a report on January 18, 2011 that the alleged arsonists had barricaded the road armed with offensive weapons, including machetes and charms and were advancing to attack the petitioners. I decided to lead the operation to open the highway myself. When we arrived at the scene, we removed the barricade and chased the suspects to the shrine of a goddess where they took refuge, thinking we would not enter there to make arrest.

But we dared the goddess and arrested 12 suspects while others escaped. I was surprised to see a well furnished house right inside the jungle and I was latter told that the owner who uses it for the sale of Indian hemp had escaped. Twelve of them are in our custody helping us in our investigation.”
Corroborating what the DPO said, Igwe Ngwunwa Eze, the traditional ruler of Alor Uno frowned at the action of the suspects and queried, “does one person own a hill?” adding that “The hill in question is a communal property owned by Alor Uno people. Since ages nobody has owned hills. Hill is older than man; it will remain while man goes away.”
He confirmed that the hill settlers were genuinely allocated land on the hill since 1982 and that any Alor Uno indigene was entitled to live on the hill.

He vehemently condemned the attitude of the suspects and called on the police to ensure that they paid for their crime.
The Councillor of Alor Uno, Hon. Obiora Ezeora said it was strange that few people planned to sell what belongs to the people.
He warned that the local government would not fold its hand to watch a few individual heating up the polity and assured that the law will catch up with those causing trouble in the state.

The town union President, Chukwu Dike said he was not aware of what was going on initially “because we were running around to assist INEC officials in the registration exercise.
“We met at the Igwe’s palace and agreed to hold a meeting with other stakeholders in the town, but before we would meet those interested in the sale of our hill struck.

“They barricaded the road. The area where the bush-bar was, where Indian hemp is sold is secluded from the community. The area is known as Obunetiti, so I am not aware that such a thing exists. Those barricading the road and setting fire on people’s property and economic trees are the ones finding trouble. One person does not own a hill. I heard that they have sold one hill standing between Alor Uno and Isiuja. We praise the police for preventing blood-shed and let the law take its course

As the tug of war between Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State and former president Olusegun Obasanjo continues, a Federal High Court was on Tuesday told how a faction of the state chapter of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the former president fraudulently obtained the order barring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the governor’s list containing names of candidates for the April general elections.

It would be recalled that the court presided by Justice Abdu Kafarati had on January 26, 2011 granted an order of interlocutory injunction restraining INEC from accepting the list of candidates who emerged from the party primary conducted by a party loyal to the governor.

The plaintiffs who secured the order were Chief Adetunji Olurin, Babatunde Fadun, Dave Salako, Mr. Wale Solaja and Seun Adesanya who were said to be loyal to Obasanjo. But at the resumed hearing of the matter yesterday, the PDP said the court was deceived into granting the order as counsel in the matter misrepresented the facts of the case and thereby misleading the court to issue the order.

Counsel to the PDP, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) who moved a motion seeking to vacate the said order on the grounds that it was granted without jurisdiction.
In addition, he told the court that its order was made on the basis of concealed material facts and misrepresenting of facts by the plaintiffs.
The court had restrained the INEC and the PDP from accepting the list of candidates sent by the dissolved Ogun State Executive Committee led by Chief Joju Fadairo.

The court acted upon a motion on notice filed by Chief Adetunji Olurin, Babatunde Fadun, Dave Salako, Mr. Wale Solaja and Seun Adesanya. The document was supported by a 53-paragraph affidavit sworn to by Wale Solaja and moved by Mr. O. O. Fakunle (SAN).

Justice Abdul Kafarati had specifically ordered, “That the first (INEC) and second (PDP) respondents are restrained from accepting, compiling, announcing, using, validating or otherwise acting upon the results of the primaries/congresses conducted in Ogun State pending the hearing of the originating summons.
“That the (INEC) and (PDP are restrained from announcing or making any pronouncement validating the result of the primaries/congresses conducted in Ogun State by the dissolved Ogun State Executive Committee of the second respondent pending the hearing of the originating summons.

“That the (INEC) and (PDP are directed to approve, accept, compile, announce and use as its responsibilities require, the results of the primaries and congresses of the second respondent conducted by its harmonized executive committee from which the applicants emerged as the candidates of the second respondent in Ogun State for the general elections and delegates to its national convention/presidential primaries pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons”
Fagbemi made efforts to move the motion, but counsel to the plaintiffs opposed him on the ground that the motion was not ripe for hearing.

In his argument in the motion, Fagbemi said: “Plaintiffs misrepresented facts to the honourable court that the Chief Joju Fadairo-led executive committee of the PDP in Ogun State had been disolved, when to the knowledge of the plaintiffs, there was no such dissolution;
“Plaintiffs misrepresented to the court the fact that there was harmonized executive committee of the party in Ogun State led by one Chief Dayo Soremi when no such committee exist and when the national executive |committee or national working committee of the party did not ratify or approve any such harmonized executive committee;

“Plaintiff concealed from the court the fact that an Abeokuta High Court in suit number AB/166/2010-Chief Joju Fadairo and 28ORS Vs. Dr. Okwezilieze Nwodo and 5 Ors had restrained the PDP from interfering with the Chief Joju Fadairo execuitive committee of the party in Ogun State;
“Plaintiffs also concealed from the court the fact that Peoples Democratic Party complied with the order of Abeokuta High Court in suit number AB/166/2010 by not dissolving the Chief Joju Fadairo-led state executive committee in Ogun State;

“The order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act on the list of harmonized executive was made without jurisdiction.”
In a related development, chairman of the PDP in Ogun State had applied to the court to be joined in the suit.
In a motion on notice, filed by his counsel, Chief Taiwo Oyetibo (SAN), Chief Fadairo asked for an order of the court to be made a party in the suit.

In an 11-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Gbenga Ojekunle, the applicant said the party seeking to be joined was not disqualified or incapacitated from performing the functions of his office by any subsisting order of injunction of any court of competent jurisdiction in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He said the party sought to be joined was a proper and necessary party without which all the issues in the suit could not be decided one way or the other.
The case had been adjourned to February 15, 2011 for parties to argue the application before the court.

Chime should join APGA OR ACN, pls forget about pdp, soon the will lose all the state in Nige. THAT CAN NEVER HAPPEN IN ENUGU WHO IS THE TO TAKE OVER THE STATE? GOD FORBID COURT MUST VACATE THE ORDER By Tony Edike
ENUGU – Hours after it published Governor Sullivan Chime as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Enugu State, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Monday night, withdrew his name from the list of governorship candidates saying it was displayed in error.

But reacting to the development, Tuesday, the Sullivan Chime’s Campaign Organisation said it was not perturbed expressing confidence that Chime would retain the PDP flag at the end of ongoing legal tussle.

NEC had displayed the list of 12 governorship candidates of various political parties including Governor Chime as PDP’s flag bearer at its Independence Layout office at about 2 pm on Monday following which his supporters stormed the INEC office in jubilation, but five hours later, precisely at 7 pm, the commission removed the names of the governor and his running mate, Sunday Onyebuchi from the list.

Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State and his Bayelsa State counterpart, Timipre Sylva surmounted all odds to emerge governorship standard bearers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the April general election yesterday.
While Jang, a sole contestant polled 778 votes to emerge, Sylva garnered 420 out of the 481 votes to defeat eleven other aspirants in the primary, which had President Goodluck Jonathan in attendance.

Others who clinched the tickets in their various states yesterday included Governors Patrick Yakowa, Kaduna State, Martin Elechi, Ebonyi State, Ikedi Ohakim, Imo State, Muazu Babangida Aliyu, Niger State, Danbaba Suntai, Taraba State, Liyel Imoke, Cross River State and Sule Lamido in Jigawa.
Gabriel Suswan defeated Terver Kakih to emerge the standard bearer in Benue State. He scored 297 votes as against his opponent’s six who did not get any vote from zone C (Idomaland).

In Rivers State, the incumbent Governor Rotimi Amaechi clinched the ticket polling 1,139 out of the 1,143 votes cast. Three votes were voided.
In Akwa Ibom State, Governor Godswill Akpabio dusted his two opponents, Frank Okon and Imoh who were disallowed from the contest. Akpabio polled 1261 out of the accredited 1287 delegates votes.
In Imo, Ohakim scored 1089 out of 1143 votes to beat Udeagu with 27 votes and Nwajiuba who polled three votes.
The Dr. Danlami Rukeye-led governorship panel in the state started the accreditation of delegates at about 2pm while voting stopped by 5pm.

Addressing the crowd at the Grasshoppers International Handball Stadium, Governor Ohakim said that all hands must be on deck to enable the governor to do more and deliver the democracy dividends to the people.
He said that his victory was not only a landslide but total indicating that the people have embraced democracy.
Commenting on the outcome of the governorship primary, the National Vice Chairman of the PDP SouthEast, Chief Olisa Metuh observed that the conduct of the primary was transparent and urged the PDP delegates to congratulate themselves for a peaceful election.

While addressing the party delegates earlier, Udeagu had lamented the mass exodus of the foundation members of the party, saying that he was in the race to ensure that every party member is on one page.
Jang emerged from a lone contest, which saw the delegates voting only in fulfillment of the new rule as contained in the new electoral law, which emphases that even in situation of no contest, delegate must vote to confirm the percentage of those actually in support of the candidate.
The analysis of the delegates show that Northern zone delegates were 273, while that of the Central and Southern zones were 244 and 261 respectively.

Announcing the result, the chairman Convention Committee, Mr Emmanuel Abeshi said Jang’s emergence as PDP candidate has fulfilled the clause that even if a person is unopposed there must be election to authenticate his popularity.
Jang commended the efforts of all those who worked tirelessly to ensure that the party achieved a lot, especially the state chairman of the party, Dr Haruna Dabin and the former chairman, Professor Dakum Shown.
He said when his government came on board it resuscitated the old structures of the state economy and built new ones where necessary, saying if he is re-elected he would use the period to initiate new projects in fulfillment of his ten point agenda.

While Elechi of Ebonyi State with not challenger was returned by the chief returning officer, Dr. Doyin Okupe having polled 634 out of the 688 accredited delegates votes with four voided, Amaechi’s scored a landslide victory leaving his lone challenger, Mrs. Denisada Ben-Fiadesima with just one vote. The primary held peacefully and without crisis.
Okupe said the peaceful outcome of the election was a reflection that democracy is thriving in the country even as Governor Elechi in his acceptance speech commended the delegates and solicited greater support to enable the party win the April general election.

He urged the people not to relent in carrying the message of good governance, accountability, probity and obedience to rule of law to the nooks and crannies of the state as that would guarantee his mandate during the general election.
However, as at press time yesterday, there was palpable tension and confusion in Enugu State.
While the primary in Lagos State was put off till today over what an official described as “logistic challenges”, Ogun State held parallel congresses and produced General Tunji Olurin (retd) and former Managing Director of the Gateway Holdings, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka. While Olurin polled 754 votes to beat three others during the primaries held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Isiaka scored 831 to beat other aspirants during the primaries at the MKO Abiola Stadium, also in Abeokuta.

Similarly, Kwara State witnessed parallel primaries. One of them produced Mr. Bashiru Omolaja Biolarinwa.
The primary election attended by the 680 delegates from 193 wards unanimously adopted the House of Reps member at Olatuna Memorial Centre, along Ajase-Ipo Road, Ilorin.
The Chairman of the Electoral Panel, Chief S.O. Adedayo said the candidate emerged as the winner based on the fact that Bolarinwa was the only candidate who fulfilled the party’s requirements.
Meanwhile, the governorship primary of the faction loyal to Governor Bukola Saraki was awaiting the electoral team from Abuja as at 6pm yesterday at the Adewole Base Ball Court, Ilorin.
Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu was the sole candidate presented by the party at the event held at the International Trade Fair ground in Minna. In his acceptance speech, he said the successful conduct of the primary showed the dynamism and resilience of the party in the state.

The governor, however, warned that the struggle has actually just begun as the PDP will contest the general elections with other political parties and so enjoined the victorious flagbearers to mobilize the electorate to vote PDP in all the coming elections. In Kaduna, Yakowa who became governor following the death of former President Umar Yar’Adua last year, defeated Sulaiman Hunkuyi, Shuabu Mikati and Hajia Mairo Habib with 904 votes.
There was tension as windscreens of several vehicles were smashed by irate youths. The police had to struggle to ward off political thugs from Murtala Mohameed Square, venue of the gubernatorial primary election.

The thugs suspected to be supporters of one of the gubernatorial aspirants had surged towards the main gate of the Murtala square, chanting slogans in Hausa language. The police had to shoot sporadically into the air to keep them off.
Scores of Police armoured vehicles, manned by a combined team of heavily armed soldiers and policemen attached to the state security outfit, “Operation Yaki” who patrolled the area, occasionally shot into the air even as the thugs lurked around the area.

Journalists who went for the coverage of the event were subjected to several hours of screening at the gate by officers and men of the state police command and other security operatives. There was long queue of delegates whose number were put at 1,300, and they were said to have started voting at about 2 pm.

The Vice President, Namadi Sambo, Senator Ahmed Markarfi were at the voting venue.
But unconfirmed report said one of the aspirants, Hunkuyi walked out of the venue in protest.
Meanwhile, one of the aspirants, Mikati had a few hours to the election stepped down for Hunkuyi, and urged his supporters to rally round him.

Politics / The Problem Of Corruption And Nigeria Government by EVANS4GOD(m): 6:54am On Dec 24, 2010
KEYWORDS Political Dinosaurs, Leakage of Capital. Politicalisation of Corruption, Netherworld. Klepto-cratic Tendency, Manageless Stasis.

ABSTRACT The problems posed to mankind by corruption due to the lact its definitive and universalistic conceptualization and, its resultant conscious and unconscious institutionalization, in most cases, across various polities of the world form the core of the analysis of this paper. Specifically, zero-ing in, on Nigeria and other developing polities of Africa, with concrete examples, this paper examines the concept of corruption and its hydra-headedness in our society as does, what to be done in combating the increasing spread of its tumour to all fibres of the socio-economic, political and cultural physiology of these nations. In the process, it was revealed that, the lack of definitional unanimity on the concept has made its mere explanation the analytical goal rather than offering meaningful solutions to the problems it poses by way of its covert or avert institutionalization, to the growth of our societies and mankind in general. These problems notwithstanding, this paper perused and synopsized the explanatory efforts already made regarding what constitutes corruption and its danger to the socio-economic system of most polities (Nigeria inclusive) within the global political community. In the process, and, without prejudice to the issues of cultural relativism and normative narrowing, we have been able to establish that idiosyncratic philosophy, normative impediments, and paucity of civic virtues among others, are causally related to corruption in most polities of the world and particularly in Nigeria. It has equally been analytically shown with current and concrete Nigerian examples, that, corruption in whatever form is inimical to the development of any society. Given this, it is our conclusion that further research on the possibility of a definitional consensus is necessary, if only to properly understand more, the moral fibres of our societies and their receptive or otherwise to the issue of corruption in view of its malignancy to national development.

The battle of wits between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Enugu State Chapter and the party's National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo has snowballed into an open altercation following the dissolution of the State Executive Committee on the party at the weekend by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

The angry state executives described development as the handiwork of mischievous and self-centered elements in the state.

The announcement of the dissolution of the Executive Committee of the party in Enugu was made public over the weekend via a letter by the media aide to the National Chairman of the party, Mr. Ike Abonyi.

Swiftly, the state chairman of the party, Mr. Vita Abba in a statement on Sunday in Abuja described the action as a desperate attempt by some few persons in the state to influence a new congress in the state.

"The attention of the PDP Enugu State Chapter has been drawn to the purported dissolution of its Executive Committee by the National Secretariat of the party through a letter signed by the media aide to the National Chairman, Mr. Ike Abonyi.

The statement reads: "The Enugu State Chapter of the party wishes to state that the said action is only but the handiwork of mischievous and self-centered elements in the state, who want to take advantage of a non-existent parallel executive committee of the party in the state to misrepresent, manipulate and instigate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into recommending fresh congress of the party in Enugu State, against the duly, peacefully and constitutionally conducted state congress of the party on February 28, 2008 which produced the current executive committee in the state under the leadership of Engr. Vita Abba.

"It is on record that the current executive committee led by Engr. Abba was duly elected through a process that kept faith with the composition of required delegates for the state congress as stipulated in Article 12 (40) of the PDP Constitution.

"It was acknowledged in a report dated March 3 2008, sent to INEC by its then Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu State, Dr Abdu Bulamawho monitored the congress with other top officials of INEC from Abuja. The Exco has always enjoyed the confidence and support of the national leadership of the party since its inception till-date.

"Further, it is not the prerogative of any individual to dissolve or reconstitute a state executive committee as this breaches laid-down procedures of our great party.

"In the face of the recent contentious development, we urge our teeming party faithful in the state to remain calm and law abiding as measures are been taken to constitutionally resolve the extant issues. It is also what noting here that this matter is currently before a Federal High Court in Enugu State," it added.
Politics / The Almighty Nwaodo Is Taking The Pdp To The Next Level by EVANS4GOD(m): 6:27pm On Dec 16, 2010
ENUGU — MORE trouble appears to be on the way of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, in Enugu State, as the factions battling for the control of the soul of the state in 2011 have decided to explore legal options, since efforts to resolve the matter through dialogue had failed.

The end to the tussle, which is mainly centred on the quest for political power and relevance, has escalated, following a fresh case instituted against Dr. Nwodo by one Collins Amalu at Enugu State High Court, challenging his qualification to occupy the position of PDP national chairman on the grounds that he (Nwodo) was not a registered member of the party.

Nwodo, who had been severally accused of trying to bring through the back door “political dead woods” to control the administrative machinery of the state, had been at loggerheads with Governor Sullivan Chime, following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s, INEC, declaration of Enugu State as one of the states in the country without valid congresses.

INEC’s declaration is viewed by Chime’s camp as masterminded by Nwodo in his bid to instal “handpicked” executives.
But some PDP members in the state have seen this as a calculated attempt by the national chairman to justify his bid to take over the state’s party structure.

According to the people, Nwodo’s predecessor in office, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, has recognised the Vita Abba-led state executive committee and worked with the members before his coming. He wondered why the former governor, who is now on the saddle, would want a fresh congress conducted.

Disturbed over the crisis rocking Enugu PDP, former National Auditor of the party, Mr. Ray Nnaji, in a statement pointed out that a few self-centered individuals in the state, who had lost political relevance, “are now hiding at the back of INEC in an attempt to manipulate and hijack the party structure through the influence of their godfather, the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo.”

Nnaji who was reacting to the recent visit by some political stakeholders from the state to the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, was angry that Mr Reuben Ochi is now addressing himself as the factional chairman of the Enugu PDP.

He said: “I am highly compelled to state categorically without fear of equivocation that Reuben Ochi is not in any form a factional chairman of the party in the state as far as the 2008 PDP congress in Enugu State is concerned. It is on record that I was the only factional chairman that existed as far as the 2008 PDP congress is concerned.

“Secondly, it is spurious and the greatest act of deceit for the Nwodo’s group to allege that the 20_man delegation hand_picked by the national chairman himself, and led by his ‘all powerful’ younger brother, Nnia Nwodo to meet with the First Lady of the Federation represents the true stakeholders of the party in Enugu State.

“Nothing could be farther from the truth. Even a lay man in the street knows who and who form the statutory stakeholders of a political party in a particular state and Enugu State PDP will not be an exception just because the party’s national chairman is from the state and has vested interest.”

According to Nnaji, his “exit from the Ebeano group which Ochi now falsely claims to be their chairman and the revelation that the national chairman of the party was only encouraging the Ebeano group to register renewed grievances over the 2008 Congresses in order to create for himself a golden opportunity to take a firm grip of the party structure to the detriment of the group, all the members of that executive (Ebeano) had officially left the PDP for another political party called the People for Democratic Change (PDC).”

He, therefore, requested to know which faction of the PDP Ochi is chairing, asking whether it is the Nwodo faction or the Ebeano faction.

Similarly, members of the PDP in the state loyal to Governor Chime are unhappy over the heat generated by the issue of the fresh congress, saying that other parties such as the ACN, ANPP and CDC had conducted their congresses without making much fuse over it, saying that the issue of fresh congresses in Enugu State had been over dramatized.

They pointed out that the Enugu executive had in the past taken decisions which were well received by the party and found to beneficial to it like the waiver it granted to Nwodo himself, saying that the national chairman would have considered some of these things as a good party man who wants the progress of the party.

“As a man of honour as he claims to be, he should have written to INEC that the congresses in Enugu were in order as was done by his predecessor, especially as he was in the ANPP when the congress was held,” the PDP members said.

They, therefore, raised the alarm that the PDP may just be toying with the eight states it has called for fresh congresses, saying that the states are President Goodluck Jonathan’s strongholds even as they advised Nwodo to take a tour of the troubled states to calm down the party faithful and advised the warring parties to sheathe their

Politics / Dig, 121,209 Other Policemen To Write Promotion Exam by EVANS4GOD(m): 10:10am On Jun 22, 2010
A Deputy Inspector-General of Police and 121, 209 other officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force will soon write a promotional examination.

The other officers and men that would write the examination comprise four Assistant Inspectors- General of Police; 124 Commissioners; 13,412 Superintendents; 15,348 inspectors and 92,319 junior policemen.

The exercise, according to the Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Adamu Waziri, is a way of addressing the backlog of promotion across all categories of rank and file in the NPF.

Waziri, at a news conference in Abuja on Monday, added that the Federal Government would need at least N6.2bn to pay the salaries and other emoluments of those that would be promoted.

He, however, did not say when the examination, which he said would not be the only criteria for the promotion, would take place.

Waziri explained that the police establishment had suffered a backlog of promotion over the years which had given rise to agitations and loss of morale, especially among policemen in the rank of Assistant Superintendents of Police and downwards.

The minister explained the key features of the proposed promotion included the re-introduction of the full complement of the inspectorate category where major command ranks earlier abandoned would be re-established to address hierarchical progression from inspector to ASP.

Waziri further stated that the promotion would affect 42,902 constables, who would move to the next rank of corporal. He added that the deficit would be addressed in the ongoing recruitment into the force.

The minister said that training for new police recruits would be short, but intensive because the initial duration of 180 days was being compressed into 90 days “in view of impending national requirements.”

“We have dispatched teams to each zone to conduct needs assessment of the training colleges in view of this exercise,” he added.

Waziri highlighted the critical role of the Police Service Commission in the implementation of the programme, noting that its inputs have been invaluable in view of its role as the statutory body that deals with promotion, discipline and recruitment into the police.

The minister said, “I have taken steps to ensure that both merit and federal character are upheld in the submissions to the PSC and we believe that they will oversight these arrangements in their evaluation.

“The overall budgetary implication that will make the NPF establishment to increase by about 121, 210 spanning DIG to PC will be about N6.2bn and there is enough budgetary provision for the emoluments.”

Waziri dispelled the confusion over the passage of the bill on the Police Reform Trust Fund by the Federal Executive Council on June 16, 2010, saying the trust fund was different from the controversial Police Equipment Fund managed by Chief Kenny Martins.

According to him, the fund will manage the implementation of the M.D. Yusuf report on repositioning of the NPF over a six-year period.

Politics / Northerners’ Plot Against Jonathan Fails 2011 by EVANS4GOD(m): 10:00am On Jun 22, 2010
by Arusi Nwanenwe, Abuja

Moves by the Arewa Elders Forum (AEF), to convince ministers of northern extraction serving in the present administration to oppose President Goodluck Jonathan should he decide to run in next year's presidential election, may have suffered a setback.

Pointblanknews.com, an internet news agency said its investigations revealed that moves by the Forum, to raise opposition against the President met a brick wall when some ministers serving in Jonathan's cabinet which the group approached on the need for them to solidarise with the north and resign from the cabinet, if Jonathan decides to run in 2011 refused to do so. The Arewa Elders Forum (AEF) is a shadowy front formed by some northern elites to exert political pressure on governments and political leaders.

Even though Jonathan and his kitchen cabinet have been quiet about the speculation, there are growing support for him by diverse ethnic groups in Nigeria and the international community to contest the 2011 Presidential election.
Pointblanknews.com also stated that the northern group has also failed in its bid to drag people like General T.Y Danjuma and the National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau into their fold against President Jonathan.

The agency gave the names of those behind the plot as Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, Alhaji Shetima Munguno, Alhaji Waziri Kurfi, Alhaji Yahaya Kwande and Senator Kanti Bello, a sworn hater of the south.
Pointblanknews.com sources also hinted that the chairman of the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), “Alhaji Shehu Sanni, is being used by the AEF to discredit Jonathan in the media. He recently described the President as ambitious, loyal to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and playing God.”

However, Sanni and his group, sources disclosed, are having problems convincing the youth flank of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), and the Yar'Adua National Movement (YANM), which has backed Jonathan. The YANM said recently “we will support Goodluck Jonathan if he decides to run for presidential election because the idea of a rotational presidency runs contrary to the constitution…There is need to give equal opportunities to all Nigerians to aspire…We are ready to give the President 100 per cent support should he decide to run.”

Sources hinted that “the AEF is very unpopular because its leadership is viewed as composed of ethnic jingoists who have no national interest at heart. They are also seen as spent forces of northern politics with the emergence of Turks like Nuhu Ribadu, Nasir El-Rufai, and Abubakar Umar. Also, its disdain for the more liberal Arewa Consultative Forum is viewed as lousy for the northern interes
Politics / 2011: Jonathan Is The Man To Beat by EVANS4GOD(m): 9:47am On Jun 22, 2010
Former Imo State Commissioner for Finance and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Obinna Okwuaka speaks on various national issues including the calls on President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2011 election, the politics of zoning in PDP and the recent changes at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Ndubuisi Ugah, was there and presents the Excerpts:

Do you think President Goodluck Jonathan should run in the next election? Would you subscribe to his contesting in 2011? The truth is that Jonathan’s academic background and sound political experience make him the candidate to beat if he decides to run. I already see him garnering a lot of support ahead of the election.

The point has been made clear that Jonathan by every right and as a decent Nigerian, has all it takes to run. I want to believe that if the institution of democracy is strengthened and we are also said to be practicing democracy, there should be no need to exclude anybody from running in an election. We should not be talking about democracy, if certain people are inhibited from contesting elections.

Based on all these factors, l see his people in particular compelling him to run believing that this is an ample opportunity for them to do so. Remember that South-South people have always agitated for the presidency of this country to the extent they embraced armed struggle and sounded tantrums of national disintegration. Believe me, there are people who will join them believing that his presidency will bring economic boom and curb armed struggle, kidnappings, among others.

What is your view on the issue of zoning in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)?
I hope I am truly competent to talk on this issue. There are various versions of newspaper reports on it. Whether there is written agreement or no written agreement, the time has come for Nigerians to reap the fruit of democracy. We need to strenghten the institution of democracy by enthroning merit and not mediocrity. I want to believe that this is one of the issues that have taken the front burner in the party's discourse and say that zoning is an anathema to genuine democracy. It breeds mediocrity. In an ideal democracy, you do not talk about it. Democracy is all about competition and asks for better alternative.

You can see that when you zone, you sacrifice merit. Honestly, PDP, as big as the party is, has an internal mechanism to address this issue.
With the change of leadership in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and electoral reform yet to be done, don’t you think that the challenges which bedevilled the 2003 election could also characterise the 2011 poll?
I cannot say there are no fears, but I think we have a capable team in the Presidency. We have a team of knowledgeable and experienced Presidential advisers. And the President himself is quite serious and has made a lot of promises.

But just like you rightly asked, we still have a long way to go. I want to commend Mr President for sorting out the problem we have in INEC. That problem of who to succeed Prof Maurice Iwu would have rubbished whatever measures we would have put in place to conduct a credible election in 2011. So, the intervention of the President in that regard has calmed the situation and given a direction to the commission. I am happy that the President has seen the urgency in providing leadership in INEC.

Don’t you agree with those who insist that if the President contests the next election, it is likely that the election might be compromised because of his vested interest?
How would it be compromised? But that is what I am saying that the institution of democracy should be strengthened. If the Senate can hasten up and come up with the electoral reform and with what INEC has done already, it will lead to a credible election. INEC under Iwu carried out a lot of internal reforms as a foundation for a credible election. The reform reflected in the Anambra governorship election and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) election.

The Ghanaian electoral commissioner said for Nigeria to get its election right, there must be consistency. Are you not worried with the level of changes in INEC?
How do you get the consistency? There is no doubt that the removal of Iwu would take us some steps backward. But Iwu should not be worried that he was removed because if you go through the history of the commission, no Chairman has ever been reappointed. It is obvious that we do not want to make use of experience. It is the nation that would continue to suffer. But the new man should consolidate on Iwu’s effort because he was part and parcel of the reforms.

Many have advocated that the seven point agenda of late President Yar’Adua was bogus. Do you subscribe to the position that the agenda should be reduced?
We cannot tell the President what he should do. The enormous resources Nigeria has is enough for any person to make an impact in governance. President Jonathan is quite knowledgeable and experienced and I would not be surprised if he comes up with a workable programme that would reposition Nigeria.
Politics / Nigeria: No Options For Zoning President by EVANS4GOD(m): 9:44am On Jun 22, 2010
The recent swearing -in of Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the President and commander-in-chief of the Armed forces of Nigeria after months of political wrangling is a victory against undemocratic forces in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous and largest democracy.

Since the inception of the Peoples Democratic Party led government in 1999, many of our detractors in the ruling party are selfish and unpatriotic to the nation; as they have always created conflicts in our country. This political motivated crisis exploits the weakness and mistakes at the saddle of power in Abuja and most Nigerian are aware of this, but now that President Jonathan had assumed power these is not the time to squabble over who to blame but support him to restore the nation glory.

President Goodluck Jonathan on ascendancy assured local and foreign investors that government and the entire Nigeria public will do everything in their power to ensure peace, stability and safety of investment. President Jonathan’s was noted for his ability to relate to persons from all walks of life without any trace of aloofness or arrogance and he remained loyal to his former boss our beloved President Yar’dua until his demise on May,2010.

The blessed nation of Nigeria, our intellectuals, the media and the security agencies need to exposed and introduce investigative and clarity at all time, when it is obvious that those who are not been doing what is right, politicians generally falling on there duty should not be allowed to go. It is pity that we have political elements that have reached the corridor of power that have evils views of Nigerian as a nation, because political parties, whether in government or opposition have been structured in a traditional fashion.

The views of elderstateman and Second Republic politician of the ruinous defunct National Party of Nigerian (NPN) Alhaji Tanko Yakassai on record as having said, the ruling party constitution centred on zoning for the post of President, that President Jonathan will not be accepted for the post and another chieftain and political landlord Senator Joseph Waku of semi-arid constituency also stunned the nation about the presidency, that if by 2011 they failed to clinched the seat of power there will be no peace and Alhaji Lawal Kaita an individual statesman stated that the North would stop the President Gooluck Jonathan at all costs from occupying the presidential seat beyond 2011 and they never retracted there statement. Because power in PDP is a closed monopoly of a few individual recycled than elected.

Nigeria’s total of 50 years under military and civilians government the North had ruled for a period of 38 years while south only ruled for 12 years. Peace can not be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding. The North need people like Balarebe Musa, El-Rufia and Col Abubakar Umar retired; these are sincere and detribalized leaders, men of principles who could not compromise. These are the type of politicians we need in modern Nigeria, not those that can be selfish in noble ideals.

Political argument is part and parcel of the democratic process. what I am most worried about is the temptation to expand argument into violent expressions of political, religious, and cultural difference as has indeed happened in the central states of Jos. Some of these crisis are manifestations of political extremism arising out of political intolerance, which itself is the result of lack of understanding of the rules of the political game.

It is true that there is freedom of expression, but they should control the question and answers that are centered on the national issue- stability. Political parties have a vital role to play and are the only means to structure competition for representation but that can not supercede the national constitution.

The 1999 constitution, guarantees the right of President Jonathan or any other bonafide citizen of Federal Republic of Nigeria that wishes to run for any elective office and no one or group of persons should try to subvert the constitution. The coming of President Jonathan is by God Almighty it can not be ignored by the agent of local imperialist.

Presently, we have a bigger crisis at hand. The Niger Delta issue; were the mainstay of the nation economy is been derived, secondly electoral reforms, employment and power sectors by solving and tackling this problem will help to reduce crime and bring stabilty to the country polity.

President Jonathan had already followed the master plan of the late President Yar’dua whose government has adopted the master plan as its policy framework for the development of the Niger Delta Region. It is rather naive to proclaim that zoning presidency will move Nigeria forward. Balkan state of former Yugoslavia tried it and 10 years after the death of Josip Broz Tito in 1980 it fell apart, is now history in the Eastern Europe.

Zoning or rotating the President between North and South, rather than uniting and providing absolute stability for Nigeria, actually will widen the gap in polarizing the country into ethnic lines.

The situation is so dire now that we witness more calls for good governance. The ruling PDP zoning system North and South is not acceptable and there was no options or provision in the nation constitutions that barred any candidate from South to contest the post of President. What Nigeria needs today is a drastic change based on vision and commitment to a strong and prosperous nation.

Our politicians need to be practical in their dealing, any plan that rests on weakening a strong Nigeria state must not be entertained. The general interests of Nigerians must come before the interests of regional, ethnic political elite or those who claimed to be champions of feudal right. This means will strengthen Nigeria nationalism to higher peak and a good platform on the international scene.

Nigeria need reall constitutional reforms, this will break the obnoxious ideology to balkanize Nigeria politics. Nigeria is a country to be envied. although some of our past leaders almost destroyed buoyant Nigeria and its rich economy through the barrel of the gun.

Not too long 1993 election which was widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history since the attainment of independence. That is the view of the many international observers who monitored the election, which late philantropist Chief MKO Abiola of defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) won. It was General Babangida fondly called IBB or evil genius decisions to annulled the election because of the candidates he supported was Alhaji Bashir Tofa of conservative NRC who failed who is also a disciple of the Yakassai’s, old guards of the Nigerian politics.

Overtime, Nigeria had made huge sacrifices for democracy. It is ironical that old walls are crumbling in Nigeria’s political kingdom and loyalties to old faiths are shaking, but Alhaji Yakassai and the co-horts who are regional champion still rooted in the 1960’s i.e. propagating confrontational politics which proved disaster for Nigeria because they fail to embraced modern civilization.

It is time we give support to President Goodluck Jonathan the charismatic and visionary leader that will unite and lead the nation to greater heights. The messiah who will ensure our well-being and take care of the problems of the masses. It takes time for a redeemer to appear for the public to recognize a sincere and able leader.

Kudos must be given to the Nigerian press and the civil society organization scrutinizing government and opposition conduct, exposing corruptions and highlighting ills of the society and human rights violation as the watchdog and guardian of the people.

Finally, thanks to the Federal Government by naming the Katsina international airport after Yar’dua late Nigerian president, few years he was at the seat of power and provided the Niger Deltan with ray of hope with his brand of pragmatic philosophy. The late president is a leader who conceives an idea and keenly seeks to make the dividend of democracy come true. It is in this light that we call upon all concerned to exhibit a high sense of maturity and patriotic and any action that will tend to desist from democratic governance in which the Nigerian people are enthusiastically engaged.
Politics / Ibb: Hard Road To Presidency by EVANS4GOD(m): 9:42am On Jun 22, 2010
Since the controversial declaration by the Maradona, most Nigerians were utterly ashamed of the evil genius, the former self-stlyed Nigerian Military President retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida to contest the next year 2011 presidential elections.

A man who denounced democracy and good governance. It is unfortunate but it might interest you to know, IBB the Pako born General was the person who annulled the freest and fairest presidential elections of June 12,1993 won by the late philanthropist and business mogul chief MKO Abiola, the pillar of sports in Africa, The Aare Ona kakanfo of Oyoland and the formation of the illegal unpopular interim national government(INC) headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan.

The political plunder is regarded by Nigerians as a rape on democracy.

In 27 August 1985, the over-ambitious Babangida the master dribbler took up the mantle of leadership illegally in a palace coup. IBB, during his reign of powers, basic human rights are being curtailed by Military decrees, the harassment of journalists and suppression of press freedom, he gave the military intelligence headed by his most trusted disciples Brigadier-General Halilu Akilu retired powers to interfer with citizens privacy, the Dele Giwas, Gani and the Kokoris etc and detain without court warrant. That is greed for power, an indication that IBB wants to perpetuate himself in government.

Only time will tell, for the foreseeable future according to most Nigerians; Overtime, Badamasi had forgotten his misdeeds so soon, that is the level of his thinking and understanding of socio-political approach and during his reign of terror as unstable Head of state, economic decline, 419, drug trafficking, illegal bunkering and torture of opponents combined with hired assassin historically record worst military dictatorship in Nigeria.

Above all, his declaration continues to make headlines in the national and foreign media. Generally, is free to contest according to the Nigerian constitution. In Babangida’s case, such phrases resonate what is perceived as overbearing arrogance by an erstwhile African dictator love for power.

Nigerian’s rightly or wrongly feel is an insult on the electorates, the masses. It is quite apparent that IBB is a grossly misdirected opportunist, seeking to cash in on the internal crisis rocking the PDP. Maradona does not have his people at heart.it is time to stop the evils genuis and it will interesting to know that is why his insisting of undemocratic norms ‘zoning’ ( chop I chop) which region to produce the president;so that he will perfect his way out to unseat popular northern candidates. Not surprisingly, Badamasi move was viewed as personal not Northern interests.

Nigerians should immediately remember the unfortunate June 12, 1993, it was one of the most critical period in Nigeria history. But Almighty God on ourside in 1993 IBB failed in his effort and was forced to resign, and his downfall, was highly celebrated after widespread public discontent.

It was disheartening to see, a man without shamed telling Nigerian government to immortalised Chief MKO Abiola. Nigeria needs neither such a leader nor candidates,Nigerian needs a leader that it deserves.

IBB is threats to the integrity and future of the country and his coming will lead to strife , instability and eventual serious threats to stability and democracy. The former African dictator, think Nigeria his self-acquired personnel properties-laughable. Since his rehearsals declaration it has been hard road to presidency is like a bad case of missing in action. even with June 12, palaver. He’s still living in the hope of its messianic return.

Once again let us take a look at his endemic corrupt administrative and illegal government e.g the Gulf war windfall of billions in foreign currency unaccounted for till date.

It is time for Nigerians to accept the reality that we are once beaten people by IBB and make your vote count, not misgovernace and authoritarian person coming back to the saddle of power. This concept of democracy is dangerous for democracy. Democracy can only survive when it values are are obeyed, the leaders of democratic states tend to be humane and fair to their people, concerned with the fundamental rights of the individual. This is obviously not the case of IBB who has no respect for the rule of law.

Democracy can only exist in places where people are free to choose who rule them. It is also vital that its ground rules are respected by all concerned and that no zoning to gain power. It has been said that one of the major obstacles to sustainable good governance in Nigeria is evils genius and his core sycophants.

Badamasi should please indefinitely remain in his Hilltop mansion in Minna to enjoyed his ill-gotten wealth from the proceed of oil from the Niger Delta Region and do an excellent job in the Niger state government as an advisor to his Gwari traditional institution, so that he will not ridicule himself or He should perhaps volunteer as an international aid campaigner in Darfur, Sudan for the betterment of indigenous Africans and this will improve his dented image of evil genius that cost many lives in Nigeria for his 8 years rule of mistrust.

Now our beloved nation need a liberal, charismatic, visionary and educated candidate that can be trusted in such an exalted office. that is Dr Goodluck Jonathan who understand democratic governance.

Finally, Nigerian will one day join to become a memberof nations were former corrupt leaders will be tried against human right abuse and account for their stewardship.
Politics / Muslim Plans 1 Million Man Match For Yerima by EVANS4GOD(m): 9:40am On Jun 22, 2010
There was a twist in the raging controversies surrounding the marriage of former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Sani Yerima to an Egyptian minor as an Islamic advocacy group unveiled plans to stage a one-million march in the Federal Capital Territory.

Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC) announced the plan to embark on a one million march at a press briefing held at the Ladi Lawal Press Centre in the State Secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) if the National Assembly continues the probe of the marriage. The group, whose position was read by MURIC Director, Dr. Is-haq Akintola accused the National Assembly of acting the script of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) with a view to smearing and discrediting the Islamic religion in the country.

The group therefore demanded an immediate dissolution of probe panels it set up to investigate whether Yerima had flouted the Child Right Act and the 1999 Constitution. Speaking at the conference, Akintola, who read the position of the group, affirmed that if the victimization of Yerima “continues on his marriage to an Egyptian lady,

Muslims will organize a one million march peacefully to the National Assembly on a Friday.”

According to the group, if some people with evil intention can march to the National Assembly demanding the persecution of Yerima for conducting an Islamic marriage, Muslims also have the right to respond in like manner and in defence of their hero and liberator, the Yerima of Bakura.

It further said the continued persecution of Yerima “constitutes a potent threat to peace in this country,” saying that Yerima “is undeniably a hero among Muslims having used the instrumentality of Shari’ah to liberate Nigerian Muslims. This is why he is being persecuted.”

The group also demanded dissolution of the panels set up by both the Senate and House of Representatives to probe Yerima’s marriage, claiming that the exercise was an attempt to probe the scripture of Islam and that Yerima’s marriage is a private affair. It said the action of the National Assembly “stands in contradiction of article 18 of the United Nations Charter, which affirms this indubitable freedom to practice ones religion.

It is also contravenes Article 9 and 14 of the European Treaty of Human Right as well Article 18 and 19 of the treaty of civil and political Rights. “What is most clear in this marriage hullabaloo is that none of the critics have made any attempt to find out the position of Islam regarding marriage. It is highly regrettable that the National Assembly has also failed in this direction.

We are alarmed that the lawmakers have little respect for the religion of Islam and its teachings. They now occupy themselves with investigating the Shari’ah and probing Islam,” it said. The group said the National Assembly “has no locus standi to investigate an Islamic marriage which conforms in its totality with teachings of Islam,” urging Nigerian Muslims to remain vigilant and resist all provocations and maintain peace and order”.

In strong terms, the group accused the child rights protagonists of prejudice and bias seeking to know what the women groups did when Pastor Trybest Atonye defiled his wife’s 13-year-old sister just two weeks ago and what they did when a randy pastor, Eke Mbah, aka Reverend Might, raped eight-year-old twin sisters? The group also wondered why “these people look the other way when pastors commit atrocities and why are they eager to act when it involves Muslims alone. Well, they missed the point. Yerima has done nothing un-Islamic,” they claimed.

President Jonathan was speaking yesterday when he received a delegation from Ondo State, led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, at State House, Monday.

“We will do our best within the period available to give transparent, good governance to Nigerians”, he assured the delegation.

The President reiterated his determination to ensure that all votes in forthcoming national elections count, adding that he believed all Governors were supportive of the electoral reforms that are necessary for acceptable elections.

“We as a people in Ondo state benefited immensely from his rule of law mantra and you recall how the late president allowed justice to take its course in the case of the election petition in Ondo State that singular act brought peace, progress and joy to the hearts of our people in Ondo State and so we especially believe that we must show appreciation to the late president and so we come on this condolence visit.

“And number two has also come to congratulate Mr. President one for the able way he handled the country in the days of uncertainty and two since he became the substantive president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and some of the decisions he has taken so far, especially regarding the choice of the chairman of INEC and we have also come to give him the message and that for us in Ondo State, we thank God for the grace in his life and we believe that God has brought him for some purpose for us in Ondo State, we believe that his major challenge and that history will judge him by his ability to carry out through the electoral reform and the votes of the people in this country must count, until then we can begin to talk about development and so we made it cleared to him that for us the people of Ondo State we are with him 100 per cent, all the way, in the electoral reform and also we came to encouraged him generally.
