We are yet to see tangible evidence that there was a massacre.
All we see are claims and stories that there was genocide at Lekki.

Please anybody with pictures or videos should upload to clear the air.

Social media and international media are agog with stories of how protesters were massacred at Lekki toll gate.

The claim has sent ripples of violence across mostly southern states in Nigeria with international communities and well meaning Nigerians condemning the act in its entirety.

But I was surprised to see and hear the Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwa-Olu in a televised broadcast claiming that there was no fatality at Lekki toll gate on the Ill-fated day.

To a greater degree of surprise all those that responded to the governor's claims only condemned him and called him a liar but none has shown any evidence to prove otherwise.

This brings us to the big question:

WAS THERE ANY MASSACRE AT LEKKI TOLL GATE?

The backbone of these protests remains the social media and Pictures and videos of the protests posted by the protesters have taken over the social media including Nairaland.

But why is it that so far we have not seen any tangible evidence of people being shot or people killed at Lekki toll gate.

Those that have pictures/videos of the massacre should please upload them here to prove that there was actually genocide at Lekki toll gate.

Otherwise Sanwa Olu's claim that there was no genocide at Lekki toll gate will be the truth and the story of the massacre is the handiwork of people bent on destabilizing the country.

“The sorry state of the Port Harcourt International Airport as at 2015 when the Buhari administration took over became a global concern. That airport was not only an eyesore but an embarrassment to all Nigerians.

That airport was rated the worst in the world. That story was completely changed for good under Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as Minister of Transportation. Today, travellers can attest to the international status of that airport.

“It was Rt. Hon. Amaechi who pushed for the construction of Bodo-Bonny Mega Road with multiple bridges by the Federal Government.

The project has long been awarded and work has commenced covering reasonable kilometers.

The scope comprises construction of a 39km long road, cross culverts and two mini bridges with a span of 23 m each as well as two creek bridges, Afa Creek Bridge of about 530m length and Nanabie Creek Bridge of about 640m length, in addition to the construction of a major river bridge of about 750m length over the Opobo Channel. The project cost is N120 billion.

“The dredging and sweeping of waterways within the Eastern Port corridor was reinvigorated under Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi by Bonny Channel Construction Company Ltd.

“Port Harcourt Port activities which went comatose in the early 2000s have come back with a beehive of economic and port activities. Trucks even stretched their parking up to around the Rivers Government House entrance gate waiting to be called up to pick up containers at the Port Harcourt Port.

“Only recently, Onne Port received the largest vessel ever to berth on Nigerian waters.

MSC, Comet and General cargo shipping lines have fully returned to the Port with an average of 1500 containers every fortnight and over 20,000 MT of cargo monthly.

Mearsk Shipping monthly container delivery to Onne increased by over 50%.

“The Port Harcourt to Maduguri Rail Line is already approved and same for the Lagos- Calabar Coastal Rail Line. Construction work will commence soon in earnest.

“Yesterday, the Warri-Itakpe Rail Line was obviously commissioned. This project has over 90% coverage of the entire South-South region.

“Approvals were also given to some private waterfront jetty owners to build private tank farms that have aided the seamless storage, and distribution of petroleum products in Rivers State.

“The Ogoni Clean-up Exercise was so dear to Rt. Hon. Amaechi’s heart that he got the President’s ears. Today, it’s a reality.

“Only recently, Governor Wike got the sum of N78.9 billion as refund for Federal Road projects constructed by Rt. Hon. Amaechi when he was Governor of Rivers State.

“Approvals have been given for Bonny and Warri Deep Sea projects. This is not just an attraction for Rivers State but the South-South region.

“With these and other attractions to Rivers State in particular and South-South in general by Rt. Hon. Amaechi, I am asking Governor Wike to resign within the next seven (7) days as the attractions are so overwhelming.”

Mr President is in the eye of the storm recently for bravely realizing the inevitable expungement of the fuel subsidy in Nigeria, brave due to the extreme furore and knee jerk reaction by some gullible and credulous Nigerians, who are convinced that, this decision is most inhumane and anti masses. Yet, conflictingly, deep within their minds, they are secretly relieved in knowing that the removal is an absolute necessity. Also, they are not unaware of the fact that, Nigerian masses are neither directly nor indirectly benefiting from the obsolete policy. Thirdly, put them in the same position and the same condition, they would not be any different.

The term subsidy means a sum of money granted by the state or a public body to help an industry or business keep the price of a commodity or services low. For decades, Nigeria had a policy to subsidise petroleum product, especially on PMS, which is one of the most consumed petroleum products in the country. This, over the years, has become a thorn in the flesh of our National Economy, due to blatant abuse and corruption by many beneficiaries as would be outlined later. Experts in the field consequently argued that Nigeria can actually do better by removing the subsidy regime in petroleum, and instead, putting the money to use by developing other sectors with emphasis on health-care, infrastructure and agriculture.

For the past two decades, after democratic governments took over from the military in 1999; this topic has been a major bone of contention. The three past Nigerian leaders had a long and onerous battle with Nigerians, in an attempt to convince the Nigerian masses that subsidy is merely an exploitative and self-serving mechanism some unpatriotic elites use, to deprive the nation of its hard earned resources. This battle proved to be a hopeless one....almost!

Why does any attempt by the government to right the wrongs of subsidy hit a brick wall? Did the subsidy regime truly help in providing enough gasoline to our vehicles and industries? Who are the major beneficiaries of the subsidy idea and Why are they averse to the policy being abolished? Most importantly, what are the benefits Nigerians stand to gain in the eventuality of its removal? These are some of the questions, that are begging to be explored on this topic.

Going back to memory lane, in 1999 the price of petrol in Nigeria was N11 per litre, by 2015, despite the subsidy, the price had skyrocketed to N145 per litre, an increase of over 15 times the initial 1999 rate! Coupled with that, the incessant scarcity of petroleum in a country that parades itself as the sixth largest petroleum exporter all these years, is awfully disturbing and beyond shameful.

In reaction to this quagmire, experts like Malam Sunusi Lamido Sunusi: Former Nigerian Central Bank Governor, and former Emir of Kano argued, that the subsidies on petroleum products succeeded in making Nigeria the only oil exporting country that does not enjoy the benefits of increase in the price of crude oil in the international market. According to him; firstly, he reasoned we needed to fix the price of petroleum products ourselves, but then, we do not refine these products! How can you fix the price of a product that you do not produce? We produce crude oil but regrettably the price we fix is for refined products. Thus, suffice it to say....we are fixing the price of what we never produced, as a result, we end up paying enormously for NOTHING. The money meant to improve other more deserving sectors, now is monopolised by a few individuals, consequently deepening the fissures of poverty in the country. This plunged us in a bleak situation whereby while the rich are getting richer; the poor actually keep getting poorer.

Malam Sanusi Lamido is not alone in this argument, Former Minister of Finance; Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala also in a nine paged document, presented to the Federal Executive Council in 2011, similarly leaned toward the same direction of thought, as carried by Vanguard Newspaper of 25th December 2011:

"During that briefing to ministers, Okonjo-Iweala, in a document, titled, BRIEF ON FUEL SUBSIDY, (by) Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the coordinating Minister for the Economy / Honourable Minister of Finance explained the key facts about subsidy, what fuel subsidy is all about, deregulation of the downstream sector benefits for deregulation), why the subsidy was going to be removed, pointing out that it was a major fiscal and financial “BURDEN” on the nation, those who benefit from the subsidy as well as the relationship between subsidy and the Federal Government of Nigeria’s budget, among other things".

From her point of argument, the former minister laboriously, and convincingly, pointed to the fact that, the benefit of subsidy’s removal far outweighs its stay. The policy is nothing but waste of resources and a huge needless economic scam in the name of making the products cheaper for the masses. On the final analysis, if government budgeted N10 for subsidy the masses only get a meagre fraction of Kobo out of it, while some subsidy elites are smiling to the bank with the rest. This systematic siphonage of our common wealth by a few subsidy elites can be clearly seen, if we are to consider the 2018 NEITI report alone, which stated that Nigeria spent about N722.3 billion on fuel subsidy! In healthcare, this amount can build 6 world class standard hospitals each in one of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The money also if carefully invested on energy sector, can provide our country with over 2000megawatts! This can give a tremendous boost to power generation and lead to massive industrialization, which would in turn provide employment opportunity for millions of “qualified” yet jobless youths in the country. In the area of Agriculture, the money can guaranty food security in Nigeria, and improve farming and other agro allied products in the country.

Interestingly, this same amount of money could also build Ten Dams with modern irrigation facilities, which would also improve agro business in Nigeria, and launch Nigeria in the league of major exporters of Agricultural products for the inexhaustible foreign consumption.

It is both curiously perplexing then, how some politicians who maximally exploited subsidy removal as the cardinal principle of their campaign, now turn back to be its major adversaries! The former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the PDP Presidential candidate in the
2019 elections happens to be one of these. He was quoted recently, attacking President Buhari’s decision on the removal and argued thus on his Twitter handle:

" Federal Government finally withdraws the fuel subsidy and price fixing bazaar that had been rife with corruption and stalling investment. This is something patriots have been calling for and for which I was demonised "

Even the Chief political adversary of PMB, from the above statement, believes the policy is corruption permeated, which every patriotic Nigerian must fight to a standstill. Subsidy removal will at least have two major advantages, killing one major form of corruption and also encouraging investors to put their money in the sector. These at the end of the day, will witness more refineries built in Nigeria, provide job opportunities for our teeming unemployed youths, and would translate to a source of income for more projects development, in transportation , healthcare , housing, and many more sectors.

Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a two time governor in Kano State and former Minister of Defence also kicked against the President’s unpopular decision on subsidy. However, if we are good students of history we could remember vividly how in 2011, during fuel subsidy removal’s nationwide protest, the same governor ordered for the shooting of the protesters in Kano. According to him, the idea is ill-timed and inhumane, but like the Chairman of Nigerians in diaspora acknowledged, much as the idea is painful, coupled with Corona Virus pandemic and a slump in the global economy, still agreed the decision is unavoidably necessary. As far as the oppositions are concerned the only right time for the removal is when they are in power, as long as as they are out of it, no time will ever be right!

As far as “WE” are concerned, it is a welcome idea, Nigerians need more focus on developing projects, they have no or limited luxury of enjoying as a result of subsidy regime, the wise and far-sightedly man, took the painful decision, not to further the harsh economic conditions Nigerians are in, but to alleviate their suffering, fight corruption, improve, lay out and solidly set the stage for more infrastructures, and a solid foundation for National Economic growth. There is no way we can stop fuel smuggling across our boarders with the current pricing system. The subsidy removal will bring more investment in the sector, government will get more income for projects implementation, and in the long run, prosperity and progress will reign!

Opinion:

Femi Fani-Kayode, (more popularly known as FFK by the initials of his name) the designer wearing son of Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode, (Fanny power) Deputy Premier of the Western region in the first republic is the perfect example of a pig still being a pig even with a lipstick on.

Yes, he is on record to have attended the high-brow English public school Harrow and followed that up with a law degree from the prestigious University of London and a masters from the world famous Cambridge University.

But if the idea was to mould him in character and training in the best traditions of an English gentleman having attended these institutions of British upper crust society, it has proven to be a waste of expensive English public school education.


His bohemian lifestyle while in the United Kingdom included an addiction to drugs for which he had to seek spiritual and physical rehabilitation in Ghana. But till today he has not been totally cured of that habit which leads him to fits of boorishness, irascibility and thuggish behaviour unbecoming of the status he occupies in Nigerian public life.

Though he likes all too often to take pride in and show off his English public education as a badge of honour, unfortunately FFK does not live up to the genteel and hallowed requirement of an Oxbridger in all he does. In the public space which he courts and hugs for recognition and relevance he is always expected to exhibit his base, yobbish, uncouth manners of an alley cat at persons who are his betters in all parameters of life.

Last week, FFK was at his yobbish worst during a press briefing in Calabar where in response to a question from a Daily Trust reporter Eyo Charles as to who was financing the trips he (FFK) had been embarking on round the country, he let rip at the poor reporter. Suddenly FFK who takes it as licence to hurl volleys of invectives at just about anyone in Nigerian public life had his thin skin exposed. Like a boxer with a glassy jaw, which the gentlest of jabs was all that was needed to shatter his thinly covered veneer of respectability was ruthlessly exposed.

In those few minutes of foul mouthed rant at the reporter for asking the question, FFK sunk lower than the lowliest he had ever been in the public estimation of him. He never had any reputation of worth anyways. But it exposed him as a brittle minded fellow who can give but cannot take and confirmed that he is just a windbag and a self-servicer, worse than the people he all too often vilifies mostly without rhyme or reason.

With his latest oafish behaviour, it is about time FFK met his comeuppance. His verbal assault at the reporter should be seen as an attack at the very profession that provides him with the necessary oxygen and limelight to remain relevant in the Nigerian public space. If he did to a lawyer in the legal profession he belongs what he did to the journalist in Calabar he would have faced immediate sanctions. (Ask Governor El Rufai)

Suffice it to say he is not even reckoned with in the legal profession. Even the so-called “charge and bail’’ lawyers one sees often hanging around courtrooms are likely to have better records of achievement in the profession than him.

He is also not a political figure of note in his native Ile-Ife or Osun State even though he tries to present himself as one. He certainly will not win any political contest there. And in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of which he is a member, he is avoided like the plague for his impulsive, self-opinionated, gaffe-prone statements which often put the party in bad light, and which necessitate painstaking damage control measures to mend.

The lout has neither a sense of shame nor gratitude. In 1966 General Yakubu Gowon then as Army Chief saved his father from imminent death by mutinous soldiers when he ordered then Lt Paul Tarfa of the Guards Brigade to rescue and keep him under protective custody of loyal troops. Had General Gowon not intervened the senior Kayode would have almost certainly been dispatched to meet his maker on that occasion by the mutineers. FFK was a toddler then, and only God knows what would have become of him in later life. Yet even General Gowon had not been spared of this loony’s ingrained bad manners. He once issued a scathing, abusive retort to a statement the former military head of state made on the civil war.

That FFK has been indulged in the public space despite all the known and documented instances of his indecorous behaviours is attributable to two factors; he is the scion of an illustrious public figure in Nigeria who literarily was born and fed with a silver spoon, and also because of the fawning, uncritical indulgence of our media which tends to accord undue relevance to persons who went to the type of schools FFK attended abroad.

FFK is fannying around in his family’s shadow and in the inferiority complex of our media who believe that Nigerians who attended Ivy League institutions in America and Oxbridge in the United Kingdom possess uncommon wisdom. It is what makes otherwise vacuous and spastic individuals of his ilk to bask in the public space with a dubious sense of entitlement, advertising their self-importance in the full knowledge that the Nigerian media will indulge them uncritically.

In the aftermath of his intemperate and disgraceful outburst in Calabar, having temporarily returned to his senses and realised that he had gone beyond even the unduly generous allowance the media has given him, he attempted to climb down from his high horse. But it was done in a derisory manner which further reinforces the utter contempt FFK holds journalists and the journalism profession which ironically is the only profession that provides him with a platform to be relevant in Nigeria.

If the journalism profession in Nigeria has any modicum of honour at all it must put this designer wearing, drug addled thug in his place as an example to all who dare to treat it with levity.

How a Nigerian sailor, Harrison Okene miraculously survived underwater for 3days in sunken ship

Nigerian sailor, Harrison Okene remained in 3ft air bubble within upturned tugboat at 900ft deep in the ocean, experts say would be fatal for even experienced divers.

Harrison Okene, a 29-year-old cook, was the sole survivor of the Jacson-4, which overturned after being battered by heavy swells last month. Eleven other crew members died as the vessel sank some 12 miles (20 km) off Nigeria’s mangrove-lined coast.

In an interview with popular Nigerian pastor, Wale Adefarasin, Harrison gave in-depth details of how he spent 3days 900ft deep in the ocean.

“It was around 5am and I was in the toilet when the vessel just started going down – the speed was so, so fast,” Okene said, he was unable to reach an emergency exit hatch and watched in horror as three crew members were sucked into the churning sea.

The water swept him into another toilet as the boat plunged 30 metres into the freezing depths. Wearing only his underpants, Okene prayed as water seeped slowly but steadily into a 3ft sq air bubble in the cabin.

“All around me was just black, and noisy. I was crying and calling on Jesus to rescue me, I prayed so hard. I was so hungry and thirsty and cold and I was just praying to see some kind of light.”

He had been underwater for almost 60 hours when he heard a hammering on the deck. A team of South African divers scouring the waters on a presumed body recovery operations were shocked to hear faint hammering in reply.

As a diver’s light approached, Okene hesitated to swim outside the air pocket in case the startled diver might use a jack-knife on him. “I went to the water and touched the diver. He himself shivered from fear. So I stepped back and just held my hand in the waters and waved it in front of his camera so they would see the images above deck.”

“The diver walked in and at the back there was an air pocket he was sitting in,” Paul MacDonald, an officer on the support vessel wrote on Facebook. “How it wasn’t full of water is anyone’s guess. I would say someone was looking after him.”

Once Harrison had been located, there were worries he would panic during the rescue, while his body had absorbed potentially fatal amounts of nitrogen. “His heart wouldn’t have been able to pump [back on land] because it was just so full of gas,” said Christine Cridge, medical director of the Plymouth-based Diving Diseases Research Centre , who advised the rescue team.

Okene was strapped into diving equipment, then led to a diving bell which took him to the surface, where he spent two days in a decompression chamber. “To survive that long at that depth is phenomenal. Normally you would dive recreationally for no more than 20 minutes at those depths,” said a training consultant from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

Okene said, “They told me all the others had died and I cried because I thought I was the only one who had been trapped in the boat”, his voice cracking. Despite suffering from nightmares and peeling skin, daily helpings of his favourite banga soup dish – a fish and palm fruit soup – have helped him feel much better, he said. He is planning to write a book on his experience.

FULL TEXT OF PROSTATE HEALTH AWARENESS LECTURE

Gentlemen,

I am here to speak with you on Prostate. The topic is misleading. Is prostate strictly for men? Yes, ONLY men have prostate and ONLY men over 40 years but the healthcare enlightenment is for everyone. There is no woman who does not know a man 40 years and above, father, uncle, brother, son, friend, neighbour, colleague...

Essentially what I will be doing today is health promotion. Responsible health promotion must provide three things:

1. Information
2. Reassurance
3. A plan of action.

Let me start with a background on prostate health.

Everyone has a pair of kidneys. The job of the kidney is to remove waste. It is the LAWMA (waste management company) of your body. Everyday your blood passes through the kidney several times to be filtered. As the blood is filtered, urine is formed and stored in a temporary storage tank called the urinary bladder.

If there were to be no urinary bladder, as a man walks on the road, urine will be dropping.

Now think of the plumbing work in your house. Think of the urinary bladder as the overhead storage tank. From the storage tank, a good plumber will run pipes to other parts of the house, including the kitchen. God in His wisdom ran pipes from our urinary bladder to the tip of the penis. The pipe is called the urethra. Just below the bladder and surrounding the urethra is a little organ called the prostate gland.

The prostate gland is the size of a walnut and weighs about 20grams. Its job is to make the seminal fluid which is stored in the seminal vesicle. During sexual intercourse, seminal fluid comes down the urethra and mixes with the sperms produced in the testicles to form the semen. So semen technically is not sperm. It is sperm + seminal fluid. The seminal fluid lubricates the sperm.

After age 40, for reasons that may be hormonal, the prostate gland begins to enlarge. From 20 grams it may grow to almost 100 grams. As it enlarges, it squeezes the urethra and the man begins to notice changes in the way he urinates.

If you have a son under 10, if he has a little mischief like we all did at that age, when he comes out to urinate, he can target the ceiling and the jet will hit target. Call his father to do same, wahala dey. His urine stream is weak, cannot travel a long distance and sometimes may come straight down on his legs. So he may need to stand in awkward position to urinate.

Not many men will be worried their urine stream cannot hit the ceiling. Toilets are on the floor and not on the ceiling. But other symptoms begin to show.

TERMINAL DRIPPLING:

The man begins to notice that after urinating and repacking, urine still drops on his pants. This is the reason why after an older man urinates, he has to ring bell. A younger man simply delivers to the last drop and walks away. Just see an older man coming from the bathroom. Sometimes he may clutch the newspaper closely to hide the urine stains, particularly on plain colored trousers.

HESISTANCY

At this point you wait longer for the urine flow to start. There are 2 valves that must open for you to urinate – the internal and external sphincters. Both open but because of obstructions in the urethra, you wait longer for the flow to start.

INCOMPLETE EMPTYING

You have this feeling immediately after urinating that there is still something left.

As all these things happen, the bladder begins to work harder to compensate for the obstruction in the urethra. The frequency of urination goes up. Urgency sets in. Sometimes you have to practically run into the toilet. Nocturia also becomes common. You wake up more than 2 times at night to urinate. Your wife begins to complain.

Men being men may not talk to anyone even at this point. Then the more serious complications start.

Stored urine gets infected and there may be burning sensation when urinating.

Stored urine forms crystals. Crystals come together to form stone either in the bladder or in the kidney. Stones may block the urethra.

Chronic urinary retention sets in. The bladder stores more and more urine. The size of the bladder is 40 - 60cl. A bottle of coke is 50cl. As the bladder stores more urine it can enlarge up to 300cl. An overfilled bladder may leak and this leads to wetting / urinary incontinence. Also the volume may put pressure on the kidney and may lead to kidney damage.

What may likely bring the man to hospital is acute urinary retention. He wakes up one day and he is not able to pass urine.

Everything I have described above is associated with prostate enlargement, technically called benign prostate hyperplasia.

1. Prostatitis – inflammation of the prostate

2. Prostate cancer – cancer of the prostate.

NUTRITION

Look at what you eat. 33% of all cancers, according to the US National Cancer Institute is related to what we eat.
Red meat everyday triples your chances of prostate disease. Milk everyday doubles your risk. Not taking fruits / vegetables daily quadruples your risk.

Tomatoes are very good for men. If that is the only thing your wife can present in the evening, eat it with joy. It has loads of lycopene. Lycopene is the most potent natural antioxidant.
Foods that are rich in zinc are also good for men. We recommend pumpkin seeds (ugbogulu).
Zinc is about the most essential element for male sexuality and fertility.

Men need more zinc than women. Every time a man ejaculates he loses 15mg of zinc. Zinc is also important for alcohol metabolism. Your liver needs zinc to metabolize alcohol.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

As men begin to have urinary symptoms associated with prostate enlargement, it is important they look at alcohol consumption. More fluid in means more fluid out.

Drink less. Drink slowly.

EXERCISE

Exercise helps build the muscle tone. Every man should exercise. Men over 40 should avoid high impact exercise like jogging. It puts pressure on the knees. Cycling is bad news for the prostate. We recommend brisk walking.

SITTING
When we sit, two-third of our weight rests on the pelvic bones. Men who sit longer are more prone to prostate symptoms. Do not sit for long hours. Walk around as often as you can. Sit on comfortable chairs. We recommend a divided saddle chair if you must sit long hours.

DRESSING

Men should avoid tight underwear. It impacts circulation around the groin and heats it up a bit. While the physiological temperature is 37 degrees, the groin has an optimal temperature of about 33 degrees. Pant is a no - no for men. Wear boxers. Wear breathable clothing.

SMOKING

Avoid smoking. It affects blood vessels and impact circulation around the groin.

SEX

Regular sex is good for the prostate.

Celibates are more pronenn to prostate illness. While celibacy is a moral decision, it is not a biological adaptation. Your prostate gland is designed to empty its contents regularly.

There is a disaster currently unfolding in Kano, with rising death rates particularly among the elderly that is not getting the National attention it deserves.

While some may explain this increasing death rate to the lack of medical care for the chronically ill due to the lockdown (which in any case is poorly observed and enforced in Kano), we should not forget that these same pre-existing medical conditions make the elderly more vulnerable to infections and deaths by Covid-19.

Kano, the most populous city in Nigeria, will if urgent measures are not taken now, become the epicentre of COVID-19 pandemic on the African continent.

I have always believed that based on the epidemiology of the virus, the population dynamics, negative socioeconomic factors, the state of healthcare and infrastructure in the city, Kano alone will have more positive cases than the whole country put together. But, because we were not testing, we did not find. We are now seeing more cases because the test centre in Kano started working just two weeks ago.

On Monday April 20th, 2020, there was a news scroll on National Television Authority (NTA) captioned “100 people died in Kano from a strange illness”. Really? What illness can be stranger than COVID-19 at this moment in our history, I asked?

Print and social media are also replete with hysterical headlines about the rising fatalities in the city. There are first hand reports from many cemeteries in the city of steadily increasing burials which the state government initially denied but later said it would investigate.

Doctors in the Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) of the major teaching hospital in the city report that recently, almost 60% of all A&E visits are adults with symptomatic respiratory infections with increasing fatality in those above 50 years of age.

To worsen things, most of the hospitals in the state are currently only partially functioning due to fear and uncertainty among healthcare workers who know very well that the hospitals cannot cope with sick Covid-19 patients that will soon be coming.

The tragedy is that healthcare workers who are in the frontline and exposed daily to the mortal danger of this virus are not provided with any form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

About two months ago, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) lost two brilliant doctors in the prime of their lives and careers to Lassa fever after operating on an infected pregnant patient.

This is the reason that the AKTH Chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors issued a statement on 20th April 2020 putting the hospital authorities on notice that they will stop seeing patients if they are not provided with adequate PPEs.

These doctors are right in their demands which are enshrined and protected by the WHO rights of healthcare workers taking care of patients in any pandemic. Doctors took an oath to protect and preserve lives not to commit suicide which is what knowingly seeing a Covid-19 patient without PPE will be.

Nigerians as a people should salute, speak up for, and protect our healthcare workers. These selfless men and women, some of the best among us are in the frontline all across the nation putting their lives on the line for us in this existential battle against this unseen enemy.

Sadly, the Kano State’s Task Force on COVID-19 is in disarray since several of its key members went into quarantine after testing positive for the virus, this vacuum in leadership has resulted in the very slow response and testing by the State’s Rapid Response team resulting in increasing fatality particularly among the elderly.

It is the socioeconomic consequences of this pandemic that scares me more than the virus itself. How well it is handled now will determine this outcome. Clearly, Kano city is in serious trouble and the political leadership is in dire need of help from the Federal government, it’s citizens and the whole nation.

A wise man once said “When disaster strikes, it tears the curtain away from the festering problems that we have beneath them.”

I call on the Federal government to act now with all sense of urgency by mobilizing resources to Kano to achieve the following remedies before it is too late.
(a). Humane but strict enforcement of Social Distancing measures
(b). Provision of foodstuffs and palliatives to enable people to stay at home
(c). Aggressive case finding by increasing testing and isolating those found positive
(d). Provision of adequate PPEs to healthcare workers
(e). Provision of adequate Drugs & Consumables to hospitals
(f). Provision of more hospital & ICU bed spaces
(g). Provision of Ventilators to hospitals
(h).Employment of more healthcare workers like Nurses and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWS) to assist in contact tracing (I).Aggressive public education (j). All deaths should be reported and swabs taken for Covid-19 before burials
(k).Active engagement of Traditional, Religious and community leaders. We all have a duty to pull together and look out for each other at this trying time.

Nostradamus is famed globally as a man who saw tomorrow. He was a great seer, whom God endowed with unbeatable clairvoyance. He could predict the future events with amazing precision. He was venerated world-wide because his prophetic prowess and projections hardly missed the targets.

President Muhammadu Buhari can be likened to the great Nostradamus. He is imbued with such telepathy. He met Nigeria in a terribly shape. It was a country wholly dependent on other nations for survival. Buhari perceptively saw tomorrow. He had a sound vision about tomorrow and the future, which told him repositioning Nigeria on the path of self-reliance was the only worthwhile step of redemption of the country.

As democratic President of the country, he knew salvaging actions towards self-reliance were necessary to fortify the future. Thus, his administration initiated policies and programmes that would pull back Nigeria from the claws of dependence to self-sufficiency.

The Buhari Presidency preached, initiated and implemented policies on diversification of the economy. He knew a mono-economy as operated by Nigeria which depended solely on crude oil proceeds for national revenues was preposterous in the event of a global crisis. In the last few years, his administration has pumped trillions of naira to boost agricultural production, promote small scale enterprises and the manufacturing sector.

God Himself, through His divine knowledge and wisdom gave President Buhari the foresight of what was to come in the nearest future. And the President’s actions were tailored in the direction of boosting domestic food production, achieving food security and scaling up activities in the manufacturing sector. And just in four years, Nigeria has pleasantly achieved self-sufficiency in food production & many essential products for her 200 million people!

But initially, the opposition in the country, criticized President Buhari’s policies and actions. He was condemned as a leader groping in the dark. The President was unjustly lampooned for his genuine efforts in transforming Nigeria.

However, the reality has only dawned on Nigerians on the wisdom of President Buhari, with the global pandemic, Coronavirus (Covid-19) currently ravaging the world. Buhari saw today’s reality years back and prepared Nigeria for it. There is now imposition of movements and restrictions on business transactions world-wide.

The price of crude oil in the international market has also slumped unimaginably. But the manageable stabilization Nigeria has achieved, in the face of this global threat fueled by Covid-19 pandemic is attributed to its impressive self-reliance status ennobled by the Buhari Presidency. Nigeria would have been in deep mess had President Buhari sustained the culture of Nigeria’s 100 percent dependence on foreign countries.

When President Buhari closed land borders, his critics and opponents filled the space with resenting voices. But the reality of Covid-19 has exposed the wisdom in that decision. It is the strength of a leader who has foresight. Even Buhari’s most ardent critics, now acknowledge him in their reflective moments, except that the usual pride of Nigerians has restrained some of them from confessing it publicly.

But in more diverse and salient ways, President Buhari’s leadership has shuddered Nigeria protectively and impactfully. The deliberate multiplication of crises, violence and conflicts in Nigeria orchestrated by state actors with its attendant humanitarian problems hinted Mr. President of the necessity to manage the fallouts more frontally and coordinatively. And Mr. President observed that mass poverty in Nigeria among the majority poor was also a problem which needed to be confronted and solved by the federal government in an organized manner.

And it is his divine wisdom and knowledge of anticipation of the unexpected that informed President Buhari to establish the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management & Social Development on August 21, 2019. As usual, the unknowledgeable opposition in Nigeria and critics slammed him variously, accusing his government of ‘duplicitousness’. But Mr. President saw tomorrow and was unperturbed and undaunted.

And after establishing the Ministry, President Buhari proceeded to appoint a humanist, trusted administrator and competent disaster management expert, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq to pilot the affairs of the ministry.

With Covid-19 gradually simmering into the nooks and crannies of Nigeria and government’s proactive steps to halt the spread of the disease, a total lockdown of the country has been ordered. The importance of the creation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has once again come to the fore.

Through the effective coordination and supervision of agencies under the Ministry, the Minister is providing palliatives to vulnerable Nigerians to save lives and alleviate the suffering of people locked down in their homes as a result of Covid-19 epidemic.

It has adopted a multi-faceted approach in dishing out palliatives to the poor and vulnerable, IDPs, the elderly, persons with disabilities, refugees, trafficked persons, and petty traders among others, as part of Presidential interventions to cushion the effect of the Covid-19 lockdown of the country. The palliatives have manifested in form of cash and food supplies to vulnerable groups in the country.

Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq has established the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development’s COVID-19 Response Committee, comprising all agencies under the purview of the Ministry which are speedily delivering diverse reliefs to vulnerable segments of the country. Agencies under the Ministry have been repositioned and are working seamlessly with the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and delivering succor to Nigerians susceptible to extreme hardships as a consequence of the Covid-19 lockdown of the country.

The minister has started dishing out palliative interventions to over 11.4 million households, and to vulnerable Nigerians already captured by the social investment/welfare programs register, covering 35 states and 453 LGAS across the country.

The minister is also exploring the possibility of expanding the register of beneficiaries, as she is in discussion with the US Social Protection Donor Group to add an additional 1 million households to the scheme for the intervention.

And it was divine wisdom and foresight that propelled President Buhari to appoint Engr. Mustapha Maihaja in 2017 as Director- General, National Emergency Management Agency (DG NEMA). NEMA under the leadership of Engr. Maihaja is leading other agencies in providing relief services and palliatives to vulnerable groups throughout the country as well as responding to other disaster situations.

Nigerians are experiencing less hardships during the Covid-19 shut down of the country because NEMA is in perfect working synergy with agencies like North East Development Commission (NEDC), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP ) and all the components of the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIPs) in reaching out to vulnerable Nigerians. Nigerians have started receiving food items, conditional cash transfers, and protective items such as face masks, soaps and sanitizers.

Furthermore, the impact of Covid-19 in Nigeria would have been devastating had the Presidency failed to engage experts ab initio in disease detection and management in the country. It was a divine foresight that informed President Buhari to appoint Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, a world class epidemiologist and public health physician of international repute as the Chief Executive Officer,(CEO) Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) since August 15, 2016.

From the first index case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, reportedly imported into the country by an Italian, Ihekweazu has taken proactive measures to secure the country. In alliance with relevant MDAs, the NCDC boss has established Isolation Centers as well as Covid-19 Testing Centers in states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It promptly acts on specimen of persons suspected of the virus and give necessary advice to safeguard public health. The proactive handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and the success story and the near zero casualty figure in Nigeria is as a result of the ingenuity of the NCDC’s CEO.

Likewise, it is only divine intervention that has insulated President Buhari from contracting the deadly coronavirus disease, even though he mingled with his closest aides and some governors that have already tested Covid-19 positive. These persons are receiving treatments in isolation centres. President Buhari is indeed divinely inspired and empowered to protect Nigeria from unexpected emergencies or disasaters.

Self-isolation means staying away from situations where you could infect other people. This means any situation where you may come in close contact with others. Self -Isolation is thus used to restrict the movement of well persons who may have been exposed to a communicable disease to see if they will become ill. The duration of the period of self-isolation depends on the incubation period (that is the time it takes between when an individual got infected and when signs and symptoms of the disease to appear) the specific disease. In the case of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) that causes COVID- 19 (Corona Virus disease 2019), it is a period of 14 days. This usually happens in a person’s home. It may also be used for people who have contracted the disease but they are not so sick that they require hospitalization, or in situations where the hospitals are already full to capacity.

In summary, Self- Isolation thus restricts the movement of persons to help stop the potential spread of certain communicable diseases e.g. COVID- 19, thus protecting the wider community. We all need to accept this responsibility.

If a medical staff instructed you to self-isolate, what should you be doing?

1. Stay at home
You or the person you are caring for should remain in your home, except for getting medical care (see sections 3 and 8 before getting medical care). Do not go to work, school, or public areas, and do not use public transport or taxis until you have been told that is safe to do so. You will need to ask for help if you require support e.g., shopping or medications.. The delivery instruction needs to state that the items are to be left outside by your door, or in the porch, or as appropriate for your home.

2. Separate yourself from other people in your home*
You should stay in a well-ventilated room with a window to outside that can be opened, separate from other people in your home. Keep the door closed. Use a separate bathroom from the rest of the household, if available. If you have to share these facilities, regular cleaning will be required.

If a separate bathroom is not available, consideration should be given to drawing up a bathroom roster for washing or bathing, with the isolated person using the facilities last, before thoroughly cleaning the bathroom themselves (if able or appropriate*). Ensure the isolated person uses separate towels from other household members, both for drying themselves after bathing or showering and for hand hygiene purposes.
You should not be having meals with your family, meals should be delivered to the door of your room, when the people leave, you can collect the meal and enjoy it on your own in your room. (See cleaning utensil under 7.)

3. Call ahead before visiting your doctor
All medical appointments should be discussed in advance with your designated medical contact, using the number that has been provided to you. This is so the clinic or hospital can take steps to minimise contact with others.

4. Wear a facemask if advised to
If you have been provided with facemasks, then you should wear the mask when you are in the same room with other people and when you visit a healthcare provider. If you cannot wear a facemask, the people who live with you should wear one while they are in the same room with you.

5. Cover your coughs and sneezes
Cover your mouth and nose with a disposable tissue when you cough or sneeze. Carers of others undergoing testing for COVID-19 infection should use disposable tissues to wipe away any mucus or phlegm after they have sneezed or coughed.
Dispose of tissues into a plastic waste bag (see note 10. below for managing rubbish), and immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, rinse and dry thoroughly. Carers should wash their hands as well as helping the person they are caring for following coughing or sneezing

6. Wash your hands
Wash your hands or assist the person you are caring for in washing their hands. This should be done often and thoroughly with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds, rinse and dry thoroughly. The same applies to those caring for anyone that is being tested for COVID. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

7. Avoid sharing household items
You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, bedding or other items with other people in your home when you have used them (or after your child or the person you are caring for has used them). After using these items, wash them thoroughly with soap and hot water; dishwashers may be used to clean crockery and cutlery. Keep these utensils separate from other people in your house. If you are not able to wash your own utensils, the person washing them should be wearing a mask and gloves, wash it separately and store separately.
Laundry, bedding and towels should be placed in a plastic bag and washed once it is known that you did not develop the disease.

8. Monitor your symptoms (or the person you are caring for, as appropriate)
Seek prompt medical attention if you develop, for example, fever, sore throat, runny nose cough and if you have difficulty breathing, or if the person you are caring for exhibit these symptoms. If it’s not an emergency, you should call your designated medical contact point using the number that has been provided to you.
If it is an emergency and you need to call an ambulance, inform the call handler or operator that you may have been exposed to COVID-19(or that you are caring for someone that may have been exposed)

9. Do not have visitors in your home
Only those who live in your home should be allowed to stay. Do not invite or allow visitors to enter. If you think there is an essential need for someone to visit, then discuss it with your designated medical contact first. If it is urgent for you to speak to someone who is not a member of your household, do this over the phone.

10. Wastes
All wastes that has been in contact with the individual, including used tissues, and masks if used, should be put in a plastic rubbish bag and tied when full. The plastic bag should then be placed in a second plastic bin bag and tied.
Do not dispose of it or put it out for collection until you know that patient does not have novel coronavirus. Should the individual become ill and/or test positive, you will be instructed on what to do with the waste.

Others are; former Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita (through a suspect linked to her); former governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, former Group Managing Director of NNPC, Engineer Andrew Yakubu; former Managing Director of Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Haruna Momoh and his wife, Ochuko Okor and former chairman of Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Nigeria’s two key anti-corruption agencies, have always emphasized on the recovery of stolen assets as key in the fight against corruption.
EFCC’s acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, while interacting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, in September, stressed the commitment of the agency in the recovery of stolen funds wherever they are. Magu revealed that some government agencies had already benefitted from allocation of recovered assets. These agencies include; Voice of Nigeria, Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, North East Development Commission, National Social Investment Office and Fiscal Responsibility Commission. However, not long after that, reports emanated that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), had whittled down the assets recovery powers of the EFCC and ICPC, but he was quick to dispel that report. Forfeited assets The value of the forfeited assets, according to findings, which stands at N21.8bn, $273.3m (N83.9bn at CBN’s exchange rate of 307) and £74,000 (N29.3m at CBN’s exchange rate of 396), did not capture several other assets forfeited but not valued. Findings by this newspaper revealed that a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, had about N86bn worth cash and assets linked to her permanently forfeited to the federal government. A breakdown of the assets linked to Mrs. Alison-Madueke that have been permanently forfeited revealed that the Federal High Court in Lagos on September 11, 2019 ordered that the 2,149 pieces of jewellery and a customized gold iPhone valued at $40m (about N12.2bn) recovered from her Abuja home be permanently forfeited to the government. In the court’s ruling, Justice Nicholas Oweibo held that Diezani, through her lawyer, Awa Kalu (SAN), failed to show cause why the items should not be permanently forfeited. The EFCC had told the judge that the jewellery and gold iPhone were reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of fraud. According to the schedule attached to an application filed by the EFCC, the expensive jewellery, categorised into 33 sets, include; 419 bangles, 315 rings, 304 earrings, 267 necklaces, 189 wristwatches, 174 necklaces and earrings, 78 bracelets, 77 brooches and 74 pendants. In 2017, four permanent forfeiture orders were issued against the former petrol minister. On October 11, 2017, Justice Abdul-Azeez Anka of a Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the permanent forfeiture of 56 houses situated in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja valued at $21,982,224 (about N6.7bn) allegedly linked to her. The forfeited property include 21 mixed housing units of eight four-bedroom penthouse apartments, six three-bedroom apartments, two three-bedroom apartments and one four-bedroom apartment, all en-suite and located at 7, Thurnburn Street and 5, Raymond Street, Yaba, bought through Chapel Properties Ltd. Others are: 16 four-bedroom terrace located at Heritage Court Estate, Omerelu Street, Diobu GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, bought through Blue Nile Estate Ltd, 13 three-bedroom apartment with one room maid’s quarter situated at Mabushi Gardens Estate, Plot 1205, Cadastral Zone B06, Mabushi, Abuja, bought through Azinga Meadows Ltd and six flats of three-bedroom and one boys’ quarters located at Plot 808 (135) Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, bought through Vistapoint Property Development Ltd. Earlier on August 28, 2017, the same judge had ordered the permanent forfeiture of N7,646,700,000 linked to the former petroleum minister. During proceedings leading to the order, the EFCC counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, while moving the application, noted that the money was part of the sums allegedly diverted by the former minister from various units of the NNPC. Oyedepo further claimed that the anti-graft commission published an advert after the court ordered the money’s temporary forfeiture but no one claimed its ownership. An investigating officer with the commission, Usman Zakari, in a supporting affidavit attached to the application, stated that the former minister held a meeting with a bank chief in her office informing him that some officials of her ministry would be bringing funds to his bank. According to him, the minister directed that the funds must neither be credited into any known account nor captured in any transactional platform of the bank. On August 7, 2017, Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Lagos also ordered that a $37.5m (about N11.5bn) mansion on Banana Island, Lagos linked to Mrs. Diezani, be permanently forfeited to the federal government. The court also ordered that $2.7m (about 841.2m) and N84.5m realised as rents on the property should equally be forfeited to the government. Earlier on February 16, 2017, Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the permanent forfeiture of $153.3m (about N47bn), which was said to have been diverted from the coffers of the NNPC by the former minister. The EFCC had traced the money to three commercial banks in the country where it was kept. Patience Jonathan Former first lady, Patience Jonathan, also had battles with the EFCC over the forfeiture of N9.2bn and $8.4m (about N2.6bn). The order of interim forfeiture of the funds went up to the Supreme Court, which ordered her to return to the court to challenge the forfeiture. However, on June 1, 2019, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the permanent forfeiture of the funds to the federal government. The EFCC told the court that the funds were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime. Though Patience, through her lawyers, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN) and Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), opposed the application and insisted that the funds were legitimately hers, the judge held that she had no doubts at all that the monies were proceeds of unlawful activities. Bukola Saraki A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on December 2, 2019, ordered an interim forfeiture of two houses in Ilorin, Kwara State belonging to the immediate past Senate President, Bukola Saraki. The EFCC had approached the court presided over by Justice Ridwan Aikawa for an order of interim forfeiture of the properties said to worth about N1bn on the grounds that they were acquired through proceeds of unlawful activities. However, Saraki, through a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said the application leading to the order was an abuse of court process and a violation of a subsisting order of the Federal High Court, Abuja restraining the commission by themselves, their subordinates, agents, servants, or privies whosoever, from seizing, impounding, taking over, confiscating or otherwise forfeiting his right to own and peacefully enjoy any of his assets and properties. Winifred Oyo-Ita On September 26, 2019, Justice Folashade Ogunbanjo-Giwa of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the permanent forfeiture of some assets returned by a suspect linked to a former Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita. Oyo-Ita was placed on indefinite suspension over corruption allegations launched against her by the EFCC and while moving the application for the forfeiture, the anti-graft agency’s lawyer told the court that the funds were voluntarily returned to the commission as proceeds of crime by the unnamed suspect. While details of the case were not read out in the open court, the EFCC lawyer informed the judge that the money had been paid into an account with the Central Bank as soon as it was returned by the suspect. Rochas Okorocha Earlier in September, the EFCC revealed that it obtained orders for the interim forfeiture of assets traced to a former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, his wife, Nneoma Nkechi and their daughter on August 22. The order was got from a vacation judge, Justice A. T. Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt. The Head, Enugu Zonal Office of the commission, Mr. Usman Imam, who disclosed this, added that the EFCC also obtained a similar order on a property, Dews of Hope Hospital, traced to a former aide to Okorocha, Mr. Paschal Obi, and the former governor’s daughter. He listed some of the properties to include a 16-block 96-flat structure and an eight-bungalow multi-million naira estate, hotel, two schools, shopping plaza, supermarket, hospital and four vehicles. The EFCC chief said while the hospital was traced to Obi, the remaining properties were traced to the former governor and his family, including his wife and daughter. The EFCC made headway on the permanent forfeiture on December 6, 2019, when Justice T.G Ringin of a Federal High Court sitting in Owerri, ordered the final forfeiture of Dews of Hope Hospital, a N1.5bn state-of-the-art 200-bed hospital allegedly owned by Obi. The commission said its investigation revealed that Obi, a former Permanent Secretary and Principal Secretary to then governor Okorocha, was a signatory to the accounts of the hospital. It also revealed that there was evidence that the facility may have been acquired through proceeds of illicit activities, as funds from the Government House in Owerri were traced to the hospital. Obi, now a serving member of the House of Representatives and a member of the board of the hospital, reportedly denied ownership of the medical facility. The EFCC said the managing director of the hospital on invitation could not also explain how the hospital was funded. Jolly Nyame Following the conviction and sentencing of Jolly Nyame, a former governor of Taraba State, an Abuja court presided over by Justice Adebukola Banjoko, also ordered that all the funds previously recovered by the EFCC from aides to the ex-governor and other government officials involved in the scam be forfeited to the Taraba State government. Andrew Yakubu A former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Engineer Andrew Yakubu, has also forfeited to the government, $9.7m and £74,000 allegedly stashed in a fireproof safe. The Federal High Court in Kano presided over by Justice Z.B Abubakar on February 13, 2017 ordered the interim forfeiture of the funds that were uncovered on February 3, 2017 by operatives of the EFCC after storming a house allegedly belonging to Yakubu. The Kano court’s order has since been affirmed by the Kaduna Division of the Court of Appeal. Haruna Momoh On November 4, 2019, the ICPC announced that it had started moves to recover N2.4bn and some landed properties alleged to have been illegally acquired and linked to a former managing director of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Haruna Momoh and his wife, Ochuko Okor. The move was subsequent to an interim forfeiture order from a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to seize the funds said to comprise foreign and local currencies, stashed in multiple accounts in four different banks as well as five landed properties located in different parts of Abuja. The Momohs have however returned to the court to challenge the order. Ruling on their application has been reserved by the judge, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, to a date to be communicated to the parties. Abdulrasheed Maina The Federal High Court in Abuja on October 22, 2019 ordered temporary forfeiture of 23 properties linked to a former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina. According to the EFCC, the temporarily forfeited properties are in Kaduna, Borno, Sokoto and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Less than 24 hours after Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike placed a N30million bounty on notorious cultist popularly known as Bobrisky of Gokana, the Nigerian Army has captured him, with Governor Wike confirming that he will redeem the pledge.

Speaking during a security meeting with leaders of Rumuolumeni Community at the Government House Port Harcourt on Friday, Governor Wike thanked the Nigerian Army for capturing the suspected cultist. “The Army has captured Bobrisky of Gokana. I will pay the bounty that I promised to the Nigerian Army.

“Anyone who generates insecurity in Rivers State, I am ready to pay any amount to ensure the arrest of that person,” he said. Governor Wike called on community leaders to supply information to the State Security council on criminals in their communities for the security agencies to act frontally to reduce crime. He described Rumuolumeni as one of the flash points in the state, where criminals use the waterway as a getaway point. He urged community leaders to cooperate with the State Government to check the activities of cult groups and insecurity in the area.

Also speaking, Commissioner of Police of Rivers State, Mustapha Dandaura said almost all communities have been overrun by cultists. He said security agencies cannot watch the situation degenerate. He commended the Rivers State Governor for donating vehicles to the security agencies to fight crime. He assured that security agencies will intensify the battle against crime to achieve results.

Justice Taiwo on Thursday directed that the 45 days can be renewed if investigation is not concluded in the allegations of terrorism made against Sowore.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo said the court would not ignore the facts presented by the security agency as it is such that must be investigated to be proved with a view to prosecuting him or it will be discarded. He said the use of the word: ‘may’ in Section 27(1), 2015 of the Terrorism Prevention Act gives the court the discretion in determining the matter, adding that the word connotes ‘directory’ rather than ‘mandatory’ meaning.

Exhibits presented by the DSS includes: Digital video display of a conference between Sowore and one Nnamdi Kanu; and a digital video display of comments made by Sowore in paragraph 4 of the affidavit that members of proscribed IMN were going to join forces with him to bring down the government. The DSS had on August 6 brought the application through its counsel, G.O. Abadua seeking to further detain Sowore, who is the publisher of Sahara Reporters and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 general elections, for 90 days pending investigation. Frommer Vice President and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the just-concluded election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has been fingered in the recent killings in Nigeria.

Centre for Diplomacy and Democracy, Washington DC, USA made this shocking revelation in a report released on Monday.

The centre said Atiku was actualizing his threat of destabilizing Nigeria as parts of his electioneering campaign.

Catherine Kerigun in the report signed on behalf of the group, said the game plan was to make President Muhammadu Buhari seem incapable of handling the security challenges in the country ahead of his inauguration and in order to attract a revolt against the government of that country .

The report also revealed that Atiku Abubakar planed to truncate the swearing in of President Muhammadu Buhari come May 29, 2019 and has paid $30,000 to Fein & DelValle PLLC, a US firm in March to carry out the dirty deal.

Excerpts from the report read below.

The rising wave of insecurity in Nigeria became a cause for concern despite concerted efforts of the country’s security agencies. Daily, Gestapo like criminal activities spring up in various parts of the country that suggest that it might be politically masterminded because of the timing, target and ultimate victims of such organized crime aimed to cause untold embarrassment to the country.

Consequently, the Centre for Diplomacy and Democracy, Washington DC, USA, undertook a systematic research on the major issues that shaped the 2019 general elections, vis-a-vid actions of political parties and political actors that were capable of heating the polity and its consequences after the polls, with a view to unravelling the mystery behind the sustained security challenges in Nigeria.

The findings are mindboggling as it unraveled a whole lot of pointers that indicate that the security challenges experienced in Nigeria are politically motivated and masterminded.

The 2019 general elections in Nigeria was regarded as one of the most fiercely contested in the annals of the country. The incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari and the main opposition candidate, Atiku Abubakar were locked in a fierce contest for the votes of the electorates. And in the process, promises were made, as well as threats as regards to the outcome of the poll.

The bulk of the threats were made by the opposition party candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and groups sympathetic to him, who carried on as he had already won the elections before the commencement of the polls.

In the build-up to the elections, armed rebels from Nigeria’s oil-rich southern Niger Delta region (Niger-Delta Avengers) vowed to cripple the country’s economy if President Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected. The militant group said its preferred candidate was the main opposition candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

“We are in charge of the struggle now, and our strike teams are active and gallantly waiting to receive instructions from the high command to cripple the Nigerian economy again if Buhari is rigged back to the office. And this time, it will be a perpetual recession for Nigeria.”

“We are adopting Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as the sole candidate to be voted for by all the people of the Niger Delta as a result of his political ideology, which is in tandem with our agitation for equitable and fair principles of federalism.”

In a report monitored on several newspapers in Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar had expressly stated that killings by herdsmen would continue if he loses the elections.

“The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, stated that the killings by herdsmen would continue and ultimately spark series of ethno-religious crises that would be irreversible if Nigerians do not vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 elections.”

From the statements gathered, it is sufficient to link the threats made by Atiku Abubakar with the renewed security challenges in Nigeria. The repeated attacks by armed bandits, killer herdsmen all points to one direction, which is the fact that he lost the presidential election and indeed gone to court to contest the outcome of the election with a claim to having access to the server of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Information gathered from impeccable sources indicates that it could not have been a coincidence that upon issuing such threats, before the elections, and after the elections, activities of herdsmen and armed bandits have increased tremendously.

There are several pointers to the fact that making the country ungovernable is a game plan of Atiku Abubakar who enjoys some level of support from some rebel groups in Cameroon by infiltration of some Nigerian communities and inflicting maximum damage to these communities.

The case of Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Taraba states presents examples of how Atiku Abubakar is carrying out the threat in a subtle manner such that would evade detection by the security agencies.

The case of Katsina, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari has been under attack by armed bandits. The game plan is to make President Muhammadu Buhari seem incapable of handling the security challenges in the country.

The statement by Atiku Abubakar stating that killings would continue if he loses the elections was a strategy designed by Atiku Abubakar to instill fear in the hearts of the electorates to secure their votes during the elections. However, this did not work out in his favour, and he has resorted to activating the plan B, which is to subtly engage the services of mercenaries from neighboring francophone countries to cause mayhem in Nigeria.

The activities of kidnappers on the Famous-Kaduna Abuja highway have defeated all known security strategy. Top security sources revealed that the bulk of the kidnappers are not Nigerians but persons from neighboring countries. And they do not kidnap for ransom, but they kidnap to paint an atmosphere of insecurity.

This much was corroborated by a statement issued by Atiku Abubakar’s party when on 27 April, 2019, it issued a statement that stated thus “The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has for the umpteenth time said the All Progressives Congress (APC) was incompetent to handle the country’s affairs, saying rising levels of crimes and criminality, corruption and impunity have raised questions about the actual purpose of government in Nigeria.”

“Security situation has been such that prominent Nigerian clerics have been raising serious concern on the issue of leadership, even questioning whether we have a Commander-in-Chief in this country. While the Presidency continues to argue that there exists government in our country today, what obtains, in reality, is different. The level of bloodletting occasioned by the barrage of criminalities across the country can only be happening in a country without a government.”

The above statements from the opposition party leave more to be imagined. It points to a bigger plot to cause disaffection amongst the populace and to paint a picture of incompetence before the international community.

This much was also corroborated by the fact that security agencies are probing an alleged plot by Atiku Abubakar, to prevail on the United States to recognize him as the ‘authentic President’ of Nigeria.

The agencies are already on the trail of members of the Atiku Deservation Group behind the printing and distribution of Atiku Abubakar’s posters in some parts of the country aimed at confusing the polity.

The posters bore the inscription PUKKA, which in Hindi and Urda figuratively means” fully formed,” “solid,” “permanent,” “for real” or “sure, authentic, genuine, solid and excellent.”

It was gathered that the security agencies are working on a theory that some groups loyal to Atiku Abubakar were out for subversive activities against President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The whole script is about a subversive plot against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Security agencies picked up some intelligence, and they are already investigating individuals and groups connected with it.

Another fact that lends credence to the plot by Atiku Abubakar to truncate the swearing in of President Muhammadu Buhari come May 29th, 2019 is how he paid $30,000 to Fein & DelValle PLLC, a US firm in March.

“In its terms and conditions for representation, Fein & DelValle PLLC had said it would establish and operate a situation room located in its Capitol Hill offices in the US and enlist the services of Lloyd Ukwu, a Nigerian barrister and trusted confidant of Atiku Abubakar, to assist in the operation of the situation room.

“The firm also proposed to execute strategies to secure the US endorsement of Atiku’s efforts to defeat what it called “flagrant violence and irregularities orchestrated” by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Buhari to compromise the presidential election.

This report from all indication points to the covert role played by Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in inciting and instigating insecurity in Nigeria. It was established beyond a reasonable doubt through credible sources that Atiku Abubakar had also compromised some elements with the security apparatus in Nigeria to leak security strategies for tackling the menace of kidnappings, armed banditry, and killer herdsmen.

The overarching objective was to pitch the populace against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and cast questions on the competence of President Muhammadu Buhari to lead Nigeria.

The statement credited to Atiku Abubakar that killings would continue should President Muhammadu Buhari be re-elected has seen a rise in the wave of insecurity in Nigeria, so much so that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party issues a press statement immediately there is a security breach anywhere in the country.

The report further revealed that Atiku Abubakar had exhibited a desperate attempt at truncating the presidential inauguration coming up in the coming weeks. Unless urgent counter steps are taken, the activities of sponsored armed bandits, kidnappers and killer herdsmen will reach an alarming level.
