Brig.-Gen. Felix Omongue, Acting Director of Operations, Nigerian Army, has disclosed that Rivers would have burnt to ashes, if not for the military’s quick intervention during the 2019 General Elections. Omongue made statement in Port Harcourt on Monday at the House of Representatives public hearing on political violence in Rivers.

He said the political landscape of Rivers was charged before and during the elections, hence the army played the necessary roles. According to him, “the Nigerian Army was the sole hero of 2019 elections. He, however, said the military arrested some criminals for alleged impersonation during the polls. “The Political environment in Rivers was heated up.” The General said it was only in Rivers that the public accused the army of killing, intimidation and arrest, while local and international communities commended it for positive role in the exercise. According to the director of operations, the Odi massacre in Bayelsa, would have been repeated but that the army exercised restraint when its officer was killed. An army officer was killed in Abonnema, in Asari Toru Local Government Area during the presidential polls. “Only Rivers in Niger Delta zone is accusing the military of wrong doings. The military has a rule of engagement (operation), ” he said. Omogue said three soldiers were killed during the elections in Rivers. Dr. Gogo Jack, Rivers Commissioner for Education, told the committee that 187 people were arrested by soldiers, including himself and detained in a military facility in Boro camp, Port Harcourt. The education commissioner said his house was ransacked while N1.5 million he left on a dinner table was stolen. According to him, his house was surrounded with several trucks and Amoured Personnel Carriers (APC). Mr Ibim Dokubo, a counsel to Asari Toru Local Government Area, said 43 persons died; 24 “identifiable persons were wounded, while 14 were brutalised and arrested. Nine persons, including the military personnel testified at the public hearing while the committee adjourned to May 8, for continuation. (NAN)

IMPROVING POLICE-CITIZENS RELATIONSHIP: TIPS FOR SAFE AND CORDIAL INTERACTIONS (PART 1)

In the wake of recent killings of innocent citizens by unscrupulous police men and also unprovoked attacks on some police men by some criminally-minded persons, “Frankmba’s blog” is today providing you with tips for safe and cordial interaction with the police at different encounters. Please read on…

Ordinarily, encounters between the citizens and the Police or other law enforcement agents should be reassuring and delightful. In fact, the mere sight of the Police ought to generate in the citizen an instant feeling of relief, safety and security. This unfortunately, is not the reality in Nigeria today.

In fact, some encounters in the past had led to embarrassment, injuries, permanent disability and, in extreme cases, death of the citizens. Similarly, some security agents have also suffered molestation and harm from such encounters.

While Police officers are reminded of the need to exercise ‘courageous calm’ and avoid resort to the use of deadly force or lethal weapon at the slightest provocation, members of the public on the other hand are expected to avoid actions that could turn simple encounters with security personnel into more serious ones.

It is against this backdrop that we are today providing our readers with tips that could help in enhancing cordial relationship between the Police and the citizenry.

Tips for safe and cordial relationship at check points

When approaching a security checkpoint or when flagged-down by the Police or other security agencies;

Endeavor to slow down your vehicle. It shows that you are not reckless. It also douses suspicion that you are a criminal and may want to speed-off.
Turn down the volume of your car stereo. Courtesy demands this. Besides, you are able to hear each other better. This simple act will also help you to win the confidence of the security operative.
Keep your hands visible to avoid unnecessary suspicion or fear by the officers that you are attempting to bring out a gun or other harmful objects to attack them
Turn on the inner light of your vehicle while approaching the cops (if at night). It readily sends an unspoken message that you have nothing to hide.
Be friendly and cheerful. Commend the officers especially when you see them working under very unfriendly weather conditions such as the rains, the harsh harmattan conditions, excessive heat, cold or sunshine. We know it’s their job, but a little kind word from you will do a lot of good. Remember when you smile at the mirror, the mirror smiles back at you.
Endeavour to be polite even when answering questions put to you by the officers
Don’t dare or challenge an armed security man to a duel. Oftentimes, you hear people say things like ‘shoot me, if you can!” Note that this is a recipe for disaster! It is very provocative and an unnecessary call for war. So, please play safe, more so, as you do not know the state of mind of the officer concerned.
Also, don’t go into a physical fight with an armed security officer. He may resort to the use of his weapon (rightly or wrongly) to defend himself.
Avoid unnecessary argument with armed security personnel. There are a thousand and one ways to seek redress where you feel your rights have been infringed upon.
Never try to touch an officer in an unfriendly manner. He may suspect you of trying to disarm him.
If you are a regular traveler or road user, make sure you have the police emergency phone numbers of the route you operate. You never can tell when an emergency situation could arise and you need the Police to come to your aid.
Make sure you have all your relevant car papers and desist from actions or inactions that constitute either a criminal or traffic offence. Such infractions of the law provide veritable grounds for possible charges and other forms of adversarial contact with the Police or other law enforcement agencies, including unnecessary arguments.
Don’t give the impression that you are unhappy to see an officer on his beat or that he is wasting your time. But if you do have an emergency, politely inform the officer. Don’t speed off while still being checked.
Take note of the name tags, Force or Service numbers, personal description, description of weapons or patrol vehicle of the security officer especially where the officers begin to conduct themselves in unprofessional manner.
Seek audience with the most senior police officer at the check point if things are not working out smoothly.
Politely insist to be taken to the police station if your complaint is not properly addressed.

ARMING OF THUGS BY POLITICIANS TO IMPERSONATE MILITARY PERSONNEL

Credible intelligence available to the Nigerian Army (NA) has confirmed the kitting of political thugs with military uniforms and arming of same, to impersonate soldiers and perpetrate various crimes in the furtherance of the activities of their political bosses. Sadly, these thugs have severally been wrongly viewed and addressed as real military personnel on various social and mainstream media channels including blogs, chat rooms and messaging platforms thereby bringing the reputation of the NA on several occasions to disrepute.

The NA understands that most civilians caught in the callous onslaught of these murderous thugs might not be able to distinguish between a genuine soldier from an impersonator, especially when they are armed with military-type weapons. However, several of such arrested impostors have given useful information that has led to unravelling the level of criminal involvement of some politicians in arming thugs for their depraved selfish gains. Consequently, the NA would continue with the line of investigations being pursued to bring to successful prosecution, both the arrested impostors and their sponsors.

In the interim, the NA would continue to advice well-meaning citizens to avoid being used as tools in the hands of such wicked politicians who would go to any immoral length, including meting out violence, to steal the mandate of the people. “Nobody’s selfish ambition is worth the life of an innocent Nigerian citizen”.

Additionally, the NA would continue to use every opportunity available to remind Nigerians of its apolitical, neutral and non-partisan stance. The NA would continue to execute its constitutional responsibilities of providing aid to civil authorities in order to create a safe and secure environment where real democratic processes would thrive.

Customers of a Canadian cryptocurrency exchange are reportedly unable to access $190 million of funds after the company’s founder died with the passwords needed to access the money.

Gerald Cotten, the 30-year-old founder of QuadrigaCX, died due to complications with Crohn’s disease, according to Sky News, citing Cotten’s wife, Jennifer Robertson. The executive reportedly passed away in December while traveling in India to open an orphanage.

Citing a sworn affidavit by Robertson as she filed for credit protection, Sky News reports that Cotten held “sole responsibility for handling the funds and coins.”

About $190 million in cryptocurrency and traditional money is said to be in “cold storage,” with the digital key held by Cotten. While Robertson has Cotten’s laptop, she does not know its password and even a security expert has been unable to get past the device’s encryption.

The re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari got a boost on Monday when Mr Olujonwo Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stormed the United States to galvanise Nigerians to support Buhari for the Feb. 16 presidential election.

Madisca, who is President, Goron Oil and Gas Limited, said through the NNPC Renewable Energy Department, there is a $25 million investment in cassava in Kogi that would be producing 40,000 litres of bio-ethanol per day.

“The investment start-up on a turnkey basis is $25 million. The plant will employ over 2,500 people on a full time basis,” he said, saying such investment was at risk should NNPC be sold to private investors.

At least 41 serving senators have lost the opportunity of returning to the Red Chamber for the ninth assembly in June, Daily Trust on Sunday reports.

This is based on the list of Senate candidates released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday.

The list showed that only 68 out of the 109 senators have chances of returning as they have obtained return tickets of their various political parties. The 41 senators who have lost the opportunity of returning represent 38 per cent of the total number of those currently in the Upper chamber.

Daily Trust on Sunday reports that it is not clear if all the 68 senators who got return tickets would win during the February 16 elections.

Most of the senators lost their return tickets to others within their political parties, although six among them picked governorship tickets in their states, hence did not contest for return tickets.

Those who went for the governorship tickets are; Senators Jeremiah Useni (PDP, Plateau), Sunny Ogbouji (APC, Ebonyi), John Owan-Enoh (APC, C/River), Usman Bayero Nafada (PDP, Gombe), Hope Uzodinma (APC, Imo) and Abdulaziz Nyako (ADC, Adamawa).

A few other senators did not seek re-election, hence they did not take part in the primaries.

Our correspondent reports that based on the INEC list, a total of seven serving governors got tickets to contest for the Senate. They are; Kashim Shettima (Borno), Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe).

It was also observed that five former governors who are serving senators are not returning. They are; Ahmed Sani Yarima (Zamfara), Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Joshua Dariye (Plateau) and Jonah David Jang (Plateau), all of whom did not seek return tickets.

The list also showed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has no candidate in Rivers and Zamfara states. All serving senators from the two states are of the APC.

While an Appeal Court ruled that the APC could not field candidates in Rivers State due to certain irregularities, INEC rejected the party’s candidates in Zamfara State, citing lack of adherence to deadline for conducting primaries. But the matter is before a court.

Thus, the number of senators who lost return opportunity may be reduced to either 38 or 35 if the matters in one or both states are eventually resolved.

Our correspondent observed that all senators from 11 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) got their return tickets.

The states are; Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Delta, Edo, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Ondo and Sokoto.

A careful examination of the Senate candidates’ list showed that none of the three senators from Bayelsa State will be returning. Emmanuel Paulker and Ogola Foster lost their return tickets to Diri Douye and Ewhrudjakpo Lawrence respectively while Ben Murray-Bruce did not contest for the ticket despite showing interest initially.

Also, the tickets that took the three senators from Ogun State, that is Olanrewaju Adeyemi Tejuoso, Buruji Kashamu and Joseph Gbolahan Dada to the Senate are now being held by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Adeola Ayoola Sosanwo and Akinremi Tolulope Odebiyi, respectively.

Similarly, the three senators from Osun State, namely Olusola Adeyeye, Babajide Christopher Omoworare and Ademola Adeleke will not be returning. They may be replaced by Basiru Ajibola Surajudeen, Famurewa Israel Ajibola and Kamoruddeen Olalere Oyewumi respectively, who now hold the tickets. It was learnt that Adeyeye did not seek re-election.

In Plateau State, all the three senators: Jeremiah Useni, Jonah Jang and Joshua Dariye will not be returning. Kefas Peter Dandam, Gyang Istifanus Dung and Hezekiah Ayuba Dimka got the Senate tickets in their place. Sen Husseini has since picked the PDP governorship ticket in the state.

One senator from Adamawa State, Nyako, of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), will not be returning as Umar Mustapha Madawaki picked the ticket to replace him. Nyako is now the ADC governorship candidate in the state.

In Benue State, Abba Moro picked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket to replace David Mark, while Governor Shettima got the ticket to contest for Borno Central seat currently occupied by Sen Baba Kaka Garbai.

In Cross River State, Onor Sandy Ojang has picked the APC ticket to replace John Owan-Enoh, while Onu Nwaeze Prince secured the APC ticket for Ebonyi South to replace Sunny Ogbuoji. Both Owan-Enoh and Ogbuoji are APC governorship candidates in their respective states.

One senator from Ekiti State, Fatimat Olufunke Raji-Rasaki of the APC lost her ticket to a former member of the House of Representatives, Opeyemi Bamidele, while Gilbert Nnaji of the PDP from Enugu State lost his ticket to a former governor of the state, Chimaroke Nnamani.

From Gombe State come Governor Hassan Dankwambo and Binta Bello, a serving member of the House of Reps, who have secured tickets to take the seats of Senators Usman Bayero Nafada and Joshua Lidani respectively.

And in Imo State, Governor Okorocha and Onyewuchi Francis have secured tickets to replace Senators Hope Uzodinma and Sam Anyanwu. The two serving senators from the state contested for governorship tickets in APC and PDP. Uzodinma got his party’s ticket, but Anyanwu was not successful.

In Jigawa State, Danladi Abdullahi Sankara now has the APC ticket to battle for the seat currently occupied by Sen Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel, while Aliyu Sani Madaki, a House of Reps member, picked the ticket for Sen Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s seat in Kano.

Senator Abu Ibrahim of Katsina South, who did not seek re-election, will likely be replaced by Bello Mandiya, who got the ticket while Kabir Abdullahi Barkiya got the ticket for Katsina Central to replace Sen Umaru Ibrahim Kurfi.

In Kwara State, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, who was reported to have ceded his ticket to Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, has his name as the PDP candidate for Kwara South, while Zakari Mohammed, another House of Reps member, picked the ticket for Kwara North to contest the seat of Sen Shaba Lafiagi.

Sen Gbenga Ashafa from Lagos State will not be returning as Osinowo Sikiru Adebayo picked the APC ticket for his seat, while John Michael Abdul picked the PDP ticket for Nasarawa North to replace Sen Philip Aruwa Gyunka, who had contested for the governorship ticket.

Of the three senators from Niger State, Sen Mohammed Garba lost his return ticket to Muhammad Enagi Bima.

In Oyo State, only Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi will not be returning as Governor Abiola Ajimobi picked his ticket.

Sen Isa Lau from Taraba State will be replaced by Bako Dahiru Gassol, while Governor Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe State now holds the ticket that took Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim to the Upper chamber.

Listen to yourself or think 2wice. Any step , changes or removal or transfer or sacking between now and before the elections its common sense it towards rigging the elections to favour the incumbent. Not only PDP should be shouting but every Nigerian.

It is now he has case to answer? Why Did he just commit the offence?

Of what use is he to PDP that they are so worried? That's the question.
Instead the oncoming elections are the more reason why he should go. He lacks integrity to man that chair in this crucial time.

When any person is being accused of any wrong doing, he is presumed innocent until proven otherwise by a court of competent jurisdiction. The country's Chief Justice of the Federation claims he ''forgot'' to declare certain curious assets plus certain foreign bank accounts in which certain mysterious heavy cash deposits have been paid into, then you easily fathom why a lot of straightforward cases have been curiously and mysteriously decided against the natural cause of justice!
It then becomes simply easy to figure out why thieves have been able to rule and ruin this country for 16 years, and you then understand why almost every thief and rogue in Nigeria attacked and condemned PMB when he moved to cleanse the judicial arm of government in 2016!
Nothing will work unless the Goliath of corruption is slain in the judiciary, and PMB should not balk at this noble task no matter the attacks, criticisms and sentiments that the coalition of thieves and their criminal supporters will hurl at him. His popularity across the country stems from this radical war he waged in just 20 months (from 31st December 1983 to August 25, 1985), therefore he will continue to have this mass appeal as he courageously steps on these rogues sitting as judges in our halls of justice!
We need PMB more than ever!

But, PDP says the planned arraignment of CJN is a plot to rig 2019 polls by APC. They are not happy. Can you not see that is another cruel plan of PDP to force themselves back to leadership? Can you not see why Atiku has a pseudo confidence of winning 2019 polls? Can you remember the River state governorship litigation? It lingered up to the supreme court. PDP had judgement in their favour while APC was denied justice.Now, I know!
