Gunmen on Sunday morning made a second attempt to abduct people at the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) quarters in Kaduna State. Newsmen reports that 12 people were abducted when bandits breached the security of the quarters, which is located before the Kaduna airport, around 2am last Saturday. Among those abducted last week were an official of the Nigerian Air Space Management Agency (NAMA) and his family as well as the wife and kids of a staff member of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET). The gunmen, who returned to the quarters on Sunday, met a stiff resistance from a combined team of the Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Army. A FAAN official, who asked not to be named, said the gunmen came through a different route. “They did not come through the airport side; this time around, they came through another side of the quarters but security agents were prepared for them.” A resident of the senior staff quarters said the gunmen had targeted one of the houses in the premises but security agents overpowered them. https://afrinews247.com/2021/03/14/breaking-troops-overpower-bandits-near-kaduna-airport-foil-fresh-abduction-at-faan-quarters/ |
The Ogun State Government says it has earmarked large portions of land in Ota, Ilaro, Sagamu and Ijebu Ode to host housing estates for middle and low income earners in the state. Disclosing this at the weekend, the State Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Omoniyi Akande, explained that the decision to embark on the housing projects was in consonance with the determination of the Dapo Abiodun-led administration to provide 2,500 housing units in the state in its first term. He added that locating the planned low and medium cost houses in Ota, Ilaro, Sagamu and Ijebu Ode was to ensure equitable distribution of amenities and projects in the three senatorial districts of the state. Jagunmolu stated further that the 150 units of two and three bedrooms at Prince Court Estate was commissioned at Kemta, Idi Aba in Abeokuta, while the 500 units of similar description are on-going at Kobape in the Ogun Central Senatorial District. He, however, disclosed that the projects in Ota, Ilaro, Sagamu and Ijebu Ode will begin after the completion of the ongoing housing project at Kobape. "We are now putting final touches to the King's Court Estate, which is currently under construction, in Abeokuta, the state capital. That project is being managed by the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, OPIC. "Meanwhile, Phase 2 of the Prince Court, Kemta is at an advanced stage and would be completed later in the year", the Housing Commissioner submitted. The Nigeria Basketball Federation has announced that final camping for the 2021 FIBA Afrobasket qualifiers will commence on November 23, 2020. Making this known in Abuja, the NBBF Secretary General, Afolabi-Oluwayemi Olabisi said players are expected to fly into Kigali. On the duration of the final camping exercise, the NBBF President, Engr Ahmadu Musa Kida revealed that the federation would have loved to have a longer final training camp for the qualifiers, but due to the prevailing factors, camp will have to open four days before the team's first game. "Longer camping period would have been the best option for the team. It would have enabled the boys to have enough time to blend under Coach Mike Brown. "Some of the players are preparing for the new season with their clubs while some are actively involved in the Euro League, so we cannot snatch them away for long." The NBBF President also explained that the financial implication on the federation also discouraged any attempt to embark on an extended final camping exercise. "We have to be honest with ourselves as a federation. Funding is a key determinant for most of our plans and programs. According to the popular saying, cut your coat according to your size, but for us at the federation, it is cutting our cost according to our cloth. Maybe in future, when our financial fortunes improve, we can camp players for as long as necessary". Players have been invited by the Technical crew after series of mini scouting by the technical crew with 12 expected to make the final list. With adequate plans already put in place by the federation, it is expected that the team will have a hitch free qualification The team is grouped alongside host- Rwanda, Mali and Algeria who recently withdrew from the qualifiers taking place between 27th to 29th of November in Kigali. https://afrinews247.com/2020/11/16/2021-afrobasket-qualifiers-dtigers-final-camp-opens-on-nov-23rd/

The Nigerian Government is deeply concerned by the incessant harassment of its citizens in Ghana and the progressive acts of hostility towards the country by Ghanaian authorities, and will no longer tolerate such. In this regard, the Federal Government is urgently considering a number of options aimed at ameliorating the situation. The Federal Government has been documenting the acts of hostility towards Nigeria and Nigerians by the Ghanaian authorities. These include: Seizure of the Nigerian Mission’s property located at No. 10, Barnes Road, Accra, which the Nigerian Government has used as diplomatic premises for almost 50 years. This action is a serious breach of the Vienna Convention. Demolition of the Nigerian Mission’s property located at No. 19/21 Julius Nyerere Street, East Ridge, Accra, another serious breach of the Vienna Convention. Aggressive and incessant deportation of Nigerians from Ghana. Between Jan. 2018 and Feb. 2019, 825 Nigerians were deported from Ghana. Closure of shops belonging to Nigerians. Over 300 Nigerians shops were locked for four months in Kumasi in 2018; over 600 Nigerian shops were locked in 2019 and, currently, over 250 Nigerians shops have been locked. Residency Permit requirements, for which the Ghana Immigration Service has placed huge fees, far higher than the fees charged by the Nigerian Immigration Service. These include the compulsory Non-citizen ID card (US$120, and US$60 for yearly renewal); Medical examinations, including for Covid-19 which is newly-introduced (about US$120), and payment for residency permit (US$400 compared to the N7,000 being paid by Ghanaians for residency card in Nigeria) Outrageous stipulations in the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act. When the Act was initially promulgated in 1994, a foreigner is required to invest at least US$300,000 by way of equity capital and also employ 10 Ghanaians. This Act has now been amended twice, with the 2018 GIPC Act raising the minimum capital base for foreign-owned businesses to US$1m. Though targeted at foreigners, it seems GIPC’s definition of foreigners is Nigerians. The GIPC Act also negates the ECOWAS Protocol. Media war against Nigerians in Ghana. The negative reportage of issues concerning Nigerians resident in Ghana by the Ghanaian media is fuelling an emerging xenophobic attitude towards Nigerian traders and Nigerians in general. The immediate fallout is the incessant harassment and arrest of Nigerian traders and closure of their shops. Harsh and openly-biased judicial trial and pronouncement of indiscriminately-long jail terms for convicted Nigerians. There are currently over 200 Nigerians in the Nsawam Maximum prison in Ghana alone. The Federal Government will like to put on record the fact that even though over 1 million Ghanaians are resident in Nigeria, they are not being subjected to the kind of hostility being meted out to Nigerians in Ghana. Also, Even though the main reason given for the seizure of Federal Government property at No. 10, Barnes Road in Accra is the non-renewal of lease after expiration, the Ghanaian authorities did not give Nigeria the right of first refusal or the notice to renew the lease. By contrast, the lease on some of the properties occupied by the Ghanaian Mission in Nigeria has long expired, yet such properties have not been seized. Nigeria has time after time demonstrated its fidelity to the long cordial relations with Ghana. But indications, especially in recent times, are that Nigeria’s stance is now being taken for granted and its citizens being made targets of harassment and objects of ridicule. This will no longer be tolerated under any guise. In the meantime, the Federal Government wishes to appeal to its citizens resident in Ghana to remain law abiding and avoid engaging in self help, despite their ordeal. https://afrinews247.com/2020/08/28/nigeria-will-no-longer-tolerate-harassment-of-its-citizens-in-ghana-buhari-warns-ghana/ |

The Oshodi Transport Interchange, with three terminals, is now open to Lagos residents who want to commute from Oshodi to Lagos/CMS, Obalende and Tafawa Balewa Square. Oshodi used to be a transport hub that is not controlled. But order is now been restored to the area, thanks to the Lagos State Government that built the edifice.
