Ever wonder what SAP, CISCO and FORD have in common in terms of why and how they use content on the internet? The answer isn’t far fetched, and we at Brooks and Blake think it’s high time Nigeria brands enter that space.

Thought Leadership is something we are all used to. As an already existing marketing buzz word, it is a subtle area of marketing where the experience, talent and passions of a business or its community is used to answer tough questions facing a target audience or topic. It is an aspect of content marketing.

As mentioned earlier, big brands like CISCO and SAP have already taken to thought leadership. CISCO is championing IoT (Internet of Things) while SAP is leading the business of innovation. On the benefit side, asides positioning their brands as authorities in the chosen focus area, thought leadership projects the brand as problem solvers – the very reason brands came to be.

In Nigeria, some brands are already flexing but yet to perfect their muscles on this issue thought leadership. Easy examples are First Bank for SME and Unilever for Sustainability.

A key aspect of thought leadership is in the projection of someone who embodies what the brand intends to push. Most times, the person is a CEO, a top staff or an ambassador that readily fits the brand’s speak and topic interest. Take for instance how Apple pushed innovations with Steve Jobs and Unilever with its CEO Paul Polman. These are opportunities Nigerian brands are yet to explore fully.

Nigerian brands need to begin projecting their CEOs, CMOs, CFOs … and all other Cs as well as their brand ambassador beyond press mentions, interviews or promotions. Thought leadership offers brands a new perspective for the use of their organization assets and opens up opportunities for more recognition, consideration and loyalty from its target audience. A weird suggestion may be to even project employees who have interest which tie into the brand’s interest, products or services and messaging.

The next phase will be to talk about areas brands can use thought leadership in and how to go about it. These will be discussed in our next article.

Euro 2016: Ten things I learnt from the tournament
Euro 2016 is the first time the tournament is played by 24 teams but other than allowing smaller nations to get a look in and generating larger TV revenue, the expansion by UEFA has been barely significant. It did not make up for more excitement or drama.
The tournament was rightly predicted to be cagey initially and open up as it gets into the knockout stages, this template was followed although not with as much goals as might have been expected in the knockout rounds.
This tournament more than any proved that the famed center forward position (or no 9 if you would have it that way) is gradually fading out. Gone are the days the best teams were led from the front by a leading marksman. France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Italy etc didn’t have a specialist in finishing play while teams like Portugal and Wales resorted to other options due to mediocre (with due respect) center forwards.
Goals might have been few, but they were some spectacular ones. Shaqiri’s scissors kick, Ronaldo’s improvised backheel, Nainngolan,s long shots, Payet’s opening game beauty, Giacherrini’s goal against Spain to name a few.
This tournament despite not being that for goalkeepers ala 2014 world cup, still proved that the best goalkeepers in the world are Europeans. Take your pick, Neuer, Buffon, Coutois, De Gea, Cech then the others like Sommer, Sczseny, Ter stegen, Rui Patricio and more.
You don’t have to be exceptional to win a tournament, just be pragmatic enough to know when to sit back and when to attack.
Now a football cliche; there are no small teams again in football. One only has to look at the group stages to see how perceived smaller teams held their own against more fancies teams.
A tournament without draws in the knockout stages can be dour and predictable. All international tournaments are like this but will benefit from some kind of reformation.
Carrying your team alone isn’t always simple, just ask Lewandowski, Ronaldo, Pogba etc, it is either, they play to your strengths and help like Bale for the most part or be a more rounded team despite having an exceptional individual like Portugal and France.
Portugal are surprise champions and that surprise flavour continues to garnish that tasty soup called football.
Bonus: Tactics has taken over the game. With rivals now figuring out how best to stop opponents, excitement for the neutrals and goals count will most certainly keep dropping.

Who says football is not as much of heart and grit as it is about skill and talent. France today dumped the finesse that had characterized their game so far in the tournament. They mixed it up and found a way to win dirty! Germany might be the best team in the world now but the French on the night were a match.
Without meaning to tone down the monumental effort they put in though, this match was as much about winning ugly as is about the stars aligning in their favour! In a game of fine margins, the one or two penalty shouts that went against the Germans weren't the main issue, it just appeared that for some reason, their high press and suffocating tactics, in the first half especially just weren't enough. Bastian Schweinsteiger chose today of all days to dump his shield of experience to be pierced by a sword of naivety.
The otherwise reliable Manuel Neuer chose tonight to time his punch wrongly, flapping at an admittedly dangerous ball.
Jerome Boateng seemed to heed the call of nature at the worst possible moment, breaking down precisely when his passing from the back and spreading of the play were needed most. He would have come in handy when the French defence CLEARLY needed to be stretched.
Finally, the ball just didn't seem to bounce in their favour especially in the first half and the few times it did, the star had already lit fire in the belly of Hugo Lloris. They created chances but just lacked the necessary composure to tuck it in the back of the net.
The French were awesome tactics-wise but for me, they won because they found out what is just about the only significant loophole in this well oiled German machine, their full backs! Hector with due respect is clueless in attack, the French found out and Sissoko did the rest. Joshua Kimmich is a promising young talent but definitely not a right back.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

Now that the first round of games of the Euro 2016 has been completed, and all 24 teams from the six groups having all tasted action, here are some of the things I have come to learn and expect. A few were obvious even before a ball was kicked, others not so much. Here we go.

1)The Euro 2016 was billed before it began to be cagey with very few goals especially in the group stages, thanks to smaller teams trying desperately to avoid thumping defeats, so far the script is unfurling beautifully.

2)The increasing tactical analyses of the game, study of the most minute details as well as improved physical and mental training technologies have yielded results for teams and coaches but at the expense of the excitement enjoyed by the neutrals. Goals are now fewer and even for someone like me that is literally obsessed with tactics, I have come to accept the fact that careful study has lead to reduced number of goals and I can't eat my cake and have it. Increasing studies on the best players means they have to evolve and change rapidly to stay unpredictable but they can only do so much since they are humans, no matter how talented.

3)There have been some tactical masterclass like Antonio Conte's team set up and playing style as well as in game tinkering of formation and playing style like Didier Deschamps France but there have also been poor tactics like Wilmots being unable to make the most of his team, making an admittedly superb Conte appear superhuman.

4)The Favourites (France, Spain and Germany) as profiled by me so far all seemed to live up to their tags to varying degrees of success despite not waltzing past their opponents as some might expect. France found a way to overcome the nerves, Germany gave up a few chances but were still decidedly the better team while Spain left it late but their superiority was clear throughout. Only one of these can win and possibly even none would win but they are the teams to beat.
Despite the praises from media outlets, I personally do not believe in Belgium (particularly their coach) and hence I didn't profile them but it is still early days.

5)There hasn't been any major surprises/upsets yet in the tournament. Hungary beat Austria but the Austria aren't particularly a football powerhouse while Italy's victory over Belgium isn't too much of a surprise (irrespective of FIFA ranking) considering Italy's history and tournament pedigree.

6)Despite some traditional powerhouses been tagged as favourites, this tournament has thus far proven and will continue to prove to be the most unpredictable in recent years with no clear gulf in class between the 'big boys'
and the middle class teams.
