Most of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria have continued to under-use their alumni networks. The only exception to this would probably be Covenant University and perhaps Lagos Business School.

Here is why we need to think about it?

1. A strong alma mater makes internship and training available. These networks also help in recommendations for jobs and gaining of needed industry experience.

2. A strong alumni network provides mentorship to the undergrads. Mentorship in the form of getting a job and growing career, starting out as an entrepreneur, and a whole lot of other benefits.

3. Funding! Yes, alumni networks fund school activities. Funding can include scholarships, fellowships, and direct endowments to the schools.

One of the key USP most European and American schools sell is their alumni networks. What do Nigerian schools parade?

Mind you, some Nigerian universities have alumni well placed in the society both locally and on a global scale so why not optimize it.

What is happening to our best talents and what are our campuses making them into?

I just finished reading The Great Influenza by John M Barry. It is a book that showcased how individuals and educational institutions were relevant in helping the world unravel the global pandemic of the early 1900s.

This reading rekindled an idea I've been fighting to kick start.

There are abundant talents in our universities and campuses, but what becomes of them? What impact do they make and how are the said hallowed institutions making judicious use of the minds and talents bestowed to them for educational upbringing?

How do learners innovate and get the mindset that shifts them from 'campus materials' to industry-relevant materials?

Aside from maths, three other courses came to mind; Chemistry, Physics and Computer science.

So many untapped opportunities await such talents in Nigeria. We have a national, industrial, and economic need for such courses. Beyond the classroom and 'rather poor' influence of lecturers on their students, how do these minds break the hold to help drive the next wave of development in Nigeria?

We need these talents in three main areas. Education (which we have a truckload off already), industry application (we're rather lacking here), and finally research (please, not final year projects or thesis, I mean real research ... industry impacting research).

Harvard isn't Harvard nor MIT, MIT because of their names, these institutions drive innovation and change in their countries.

And when I pause to think, I ask myself, where is the Nigerian equivalent today. Why aren't our institutions driving the creation of a vaccine for COVID? Who says the Nigerian intellectuals cannot create a vaccine? When will a Nigerian led research make an impact in changing a constitution or creating a new one?

I am starting a move I call LinkedIn Ten Thousand Movement (#LinkedIn10K), and the goal is to influence students to think strategically and innovatively in leading a new narrative for Nigeria.

We will be different.

In my years of reviewing and writing so many CVs, I’ve come to see lot of applicant make mistakes when it comes to putting down their interests. I will attempt to shed some light on this to help them write something that sells their value to an employer.

1. An interest is more than a hobby. What this means on your CV is this — NEVER use the heading hobby or even list what you classify as your hobby e.g reading, partying, cooking etc. Do not add anything like this.

2. In a CV, an interest indicates something you are passionate about. Here is an easier way to know what to write. Ask yourself ‘what can I volunteer to do freely” OR “what is the physical demonstration of my life purpose”.

3. Understanding that the role of a CV is to sell value, — yours to the employer, then you must have it at the back of your mind that your listed interest should sound valuable to the recruiter. Always think of your “interest as a value-add’ aside from your primary skills, something you can bring to the table anytime — for free or … (depending on your employee relationship, a small fee).

4. Your interest is not what you love to do. It should be WHAT YOU CAN DO. Your interest should be a fusion of your skill and a passion.

5. Lastly, when you still can’t make up your mind on what to put down, don’t write or put down anything as an interest. In fact, do not add a subtitle called ‘Interest’. Send an ‘interest-less” CV or resume. Better safe than to short sell yourself.

Here is a quick guide.

Remember, your your interest should always sound beneficial to the recruiter. So do your research and include a maximum of 4 interest that you have and can be of benefit to the employer and industry the organization plays in. Lastly, couch how you write the interest as this is what will make the difference in the end.

Writing — Blogging (to be more specific, add a niche e.g tech blogging
Photography — include the type e.g event photography
Networking — Industry networking
Coding
Graphics design
Event planning

Since the Corona virus made landfall in Nigeria to the lockdown and post lockdown, it has been series of issues for Nigerians. No one prays to hear bad news, but should it happen one must always be prepared. Being prepared includes having readily available funds. This is where emergency funds come to play.

An emergency fund is money you save to take care of unexpected occurrences. It is important to note that it is a fund you have to consciously save towards.

Emergency funds can be used for
- Unplanned home repairs
- Sustenance during job loss
- Medical emergencies
- Usually any unplanned or unexpected occurrence.
- Do not use your emergency fund for expenses like house rent, travel expenses or buying a car. These expenses should be planned for aside. Also, your emergency fund should not be kept in any risky investments. It should be a money source that is readily available to you at any time without hassles.

How Much Is An Ideal Emergency Fund?
First, there is no one size fits all. You should save what you’re comfortable with towards building a buffer that is sufficient to sustain you. Experts advise that your emergency funds should be as much as 3 times your living expenses if single, and between 6–9 times if you have dependents. I couldn’t help but think about you. Yes, you! Job search may just have gotten another twist thanks to Corona but here is my strong belief,

In what looks like darkness, lies the greatest opportunity for light to shine.

Labour force will be cut down perhaps during or after the pandemic phases out. The reason is plainly economic and required for businesses to bounce back.

How to stay ahead of the curve
1. Learn a skill and start utilizing what you know
2. Don’t wait for an employer. Become your own boss, market your services and see how far you can grow.
3. Upgrade your career brand digitally by upgrading your LinkedIn profile, refresh your job portal database and make connections within this season.
4. Insist on a telephone or virtual interview via Skype, Zoom and a couple of other tools are used for such calls.
5. Always enquire after the company’s policy or remote work and telecommuting. This global pandemic may have just introduced a new work style to Nigeria.
