It seems Ibani is used ceremonially and in songs in Opobo, while their main language is Igbo. This would reflect the Ijaw origins of their statehood and their peopling by hinterland Igbo people and their position as traders.

Isnt that what every edifice of our public space is....some legacy left by colonials or copied from the works of ex-colonials? Which one is original or authentic to Africa? None!

The City of Lagos, in its glory, was a model for most even in Europe and America. There are postcards that exist till today in private hands in Europe, showcasing the beauty and aesthetics of Lagos and the culture and beauty of the people.

So you are wrong to assert that Lagos was never model for anywhere or that it was never more developed than places in Europe and America.

I wrote a letter not too long ago to the Lagos State House of Assembly complaining about the cultural value of their building to the public space and its zero credits as a designation of endowments. I focused principally on City Hall in Lagos.

When they built the House of Assembly in Ikeja they did a shoddy job and failed in their vision to account for history or the endowment of the structure.

City Hall till today continues to be a landmark of beauty and pride. This is what society should encourage.

Africa generally lack eye for space and aesthetics. All of our works of arts took inspiration from a need to worship a higher authority. We continue to fail to worship one another and the failure permeates into our politics and social interaction. This is all over Africa...in fact all over anywhere you find a black population, including America and the Carribeans.
Those innovations were being taken out of Europe and America at the time and applied to select areas of Africa, Cape Town at the time was well past many cities, but it was a white stronghold.

The point is that these Nigerian cities under the control of their ethnic groups have not been models for other cities so e-warriors comparing these cities is an embarrassing exercise.

It appears you have gone knee deep in the sea of ignorance with the use of the word - "Black" for human. Again, color is not human. I still cannot fathom the intellect that instigates you to refer or identify human beings with color. By the way, how many shades of color do human beings have on earth? It is unfortunate that those who tend to get twisted out of human form due to slavery are the same people who gladly embraced the derogatory words for human that flowed straight from insidious acts of slavery. It is a mark of deliberate idiocy to refer or identify human being with color. From your posts, it is safe to say you cannot do better than those Africans you seemed to castigate.
Guy, all this yarn and your experience on this earth is still shaped by you being black.

There were places in Europe and even America that were still using oil lamp long after Lagos had switched to electricity to light public lamp posts.

While Lagos was running an efficient tramway places in America were still using horse buggyies.

While Lagos had pipe borne water some parts of Europe were still dependent on well water or acquifers.

There is a history of Lagos best told by Lagosian, an indigene whose ancestry is rooted in the lagoon, not those who came to see what a Lagoon look like.

Lagos was already using cablegram to communicate messages while certaain cities and even countries in Europe were using horse dispatchers to carry messages.
And here you go talking about British colonial infrastructure for European Quarters circa 1910! A time of apartheid when blacks were not allowed into these infrastructures except for elites or house helps. Too bad.

VI, Ikoyi, Apapa, Ikeja, these places have far better amenities than some places abroad. There are streets in these areas you enter and forget you are in Africa.

Ibos brought disorderliness and turned these places to ghettoes.

Go and see pictures of even old Falomo before Ibos turned it into mini Aba.

Nonsense! Maybe people should not compare but to say VI is less than a low income place in Netherlands is f00lish. Thats the side of VI you met after it was ruined by your kins displaced from East.
You're using the whole ethnic thing to distract yourself from the mediocrity of Nigeria's infrastructure, Lagos in this case, and that's mediocrity at best because Lagos and the rest of Nigeria are not seen as anything more than slums in the eyes of the international community. Despite what you wrote, Lagos has never been an international example for any developing city, its best parts are worse than the worst parts of exemplary cities, and you know that. Trying to draw up example of cities from another part of Nigeria which are slums in order to best another slum (Lagos) would be an insult to anybody's intelligence.

this statement has a lot of inaccuracies and they're hard to address on one go. The UK is often called Britain, but this is wrong. It's like how a lot of people in Nigeria call Chinese ppl white. Or how they call Petroleum Jelly Vaseline. That doesn't make them white and doesn't make petroleum jelly vaseline. Inaccuracies are common for everyone, but that doesn't make them right. this isn't evolution, it's just a common misconception.

The US is a western country because culturally it's an extension of the UK and is dominated by anglo saxons who choose to call it a western country.
Cuba is a western country. People in Northern Ireland call themselves British, that's the official term for a UK citizen. 20+ years after the cold war, Switzerland cannot be called a second or third world country.

Nuzo1:
You used "third world" to define economically backward nations. But in the real sense, it means non allied nations during the ww2.

While I used "developing countries". Which was recently scrapped by world Bank for clearer classifications and replaced with NOTHING. And you have the guts to say it's pointless?

What exactly are you preaching against on this thread? Ignorance right?
The terms don't matter, the decayed infrastructure does. You can cycle through hundreds of terms, they will still ring the same as a third world country because that's the position you're in when your passport can hardly get you anywhere while others glide through borders.

I could let your definition be if I was debating with Okada and Keke riders in a newspapers stand. But I wouldn't let it be in a thread like this where the op (you) is sounding international and berating ignorance.

You are exhibiting what you are condemning. That's my point.
I don't know what okada and keke drivers has to do with this, third world isn't a stereotype anymore than underdeveloped countries is, the definition and use of the word has been explained already, so it's up to whoever understands its use and the use of 'underdeveloped' as dangerous to get it.

It's a stereotype bro.

You can't be making a case against the problem with underdeveloped countries and still have a problem with understanding the right phrases to use, what the main problems are and the solutions. Even worse so, not being open to learn.

Why then do have a case against ignorance in Africa when you seem to be exhibiting a great deal of it?
You don't actually understand that some use the term first world and third world to highlight the inequalities between nations. It doesn't matter what nicety you're actually using anyway, the inequality and seclusion of third world countries from the share in economics would remain as such.

His definition is factually correct.

Note: the Biafran war happened during the cold war and both the US and USSR were against us, making us non-aligned and second world by definition.

these definitions shift but most shifts are inaccurate. For example, a western country is a country that was a part of the western roman empire and an eastern country the eastern. But today western means white -or developed- and eastern means far east asian. Still, the person with the original definition is correct.
That's not really how language works. Nobody would seriously call Switzerland a second or third world country and that's because the language has moved from the cold war era, western for example doesn't mean white or developed, it's based on the values and the culture of western Europe especially, which is why the US is a western country and Japan is never considered as such, Jamaica with a predominantly African-descended population is a western country. Another example is how UK is also called Britain even though parts of it are not on the island of Britain. The original definition of western is archaic although the current term is based on it. The same evolution has happened for first, second, third world which are used to signify the advantages and disadvantages, exploitation and power structure of world economies.

Wrong sir.

The classification of countries by first, second and third world were purely for political, diplomatic purposes, and has nothing to do with economic power. Those phrases are irrelevant and obsolete in today's world.

1. First world countries were those that allied with USA and Nato during the ww2.

2. Second world countries were those that allied with Russia and China. Cuba, Ethiopia etc.

3. Third world countries were those who were neutral during the war. Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden, Brazil and most countries in Africa.

That being said, I think the proper words to use are "highly developed, developed, industrialized, newly industrialized, developing and underdeveloped countries".

As for the entirety of your topic, I'm still thinking whether to respond or not. Your submission came with a lot of truths but lacks an in depth understanding of the root causes and solutions.

Thanks anyways for highlighting some of these truths.
Nobody today would call Switzerland a third world country, the definition of the worlds today is based on development and economic power.

"first world: the highly developed industrialized nations often considered the westernized countries of the world"
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/first%20world

People use these definitions to outline the power dynamics involved in being developed and underdeveloped.

Nigeria has been independent for more than half a century yet. look at where we are. we have not got anything right be it electricity, roads, even FOOD.

Ivory coast main export is cocoa. they export it raw to foreighn countries. I watched a video that shows that majority of those farmer have not tasted chocolate in thier life time.

you may argue forth and back. Negroid have issues with intelligence. or what could be the explanation for the incessant herdsman/farmers clash.

An average HAUSA/FULANI man never evolved from being a hunter gatherers. their IQ is very low it is only comparable with that of the australian Aborigines. when an hausa man leave his enclave and move to other region. observe their living condition they either live in constructed kiosk made with wood or pan. or they cluster in a room.

we africans seems not capable of having the ability to plan for the future. we wait for the future to happen to us.

my tirade might seems racist. but I beg you to make further inquires into the subject matter. the bottom line is that blacks have low IQs. though there maybe excpetions.

In one instance, I shall give you kudos for the thought to have Nigeria and Developed in one sentence is absurd. By the same token, I must say you have the backward mentality which you seemed to berate Nigeria. Please cease to use the word "Black" for Africans and "Third World" for developing countries. If you have third world, I guess in your book you had "First World, Second World, Fourth World, Fifth World, Sixth World, etc. It is act of foolery to dwell on something that has no beginning and probably no ending.
The experience of black Africans is as shaped primarily by them being seen as black, no matter how that came about. The share of the world's power and resources has pushed certain countries into a lower order, and that's what makes certain countries third world. Nigeria cannot make decisions for the world that Germany can, Germany is in the first world and Nigeria in the third.

That's the problem, you're ignorant of the fact that most mechanical objects came from after the Industrial Revolution, which further proves the point that one of Africa's main problems is ignorance.

It would be too much to explain why certain neighbourhoods that are low income deteriorate from issues that are more related to the neglect from the government than to the intelligence of the population. Detroit is an example of how the hollowing out of industry has lead to the black population which was held back in times of prosperity becoming dysfunctional. It is very convenient to forget that fact that blacks in America had had decades where they were not allowed into better funded schools, and that England has a zoning issue where lower incoming households are grouped together and abandoned, that's not to forget the fact that Peckham is actually becoming more upscale now.

If you look around the world, there is current reestablishment of peoples' ethnicity associated with a nation. There is nothing such as "Black Africans". The lack of ethnical identity with respect to nation have forced most Africans to assume a form of irresponsible thing out of color chart as an identifying attribute. Nigerians have no identify so are most African countries. As fighting each other, most dumbass Nigerians will continue to fight one another until the cesspit is disintegrated into nation states.

Very correct!

The German is racially different than a Slav.

So also a Jap is distinct from a Malay.
That's nice in theory, but how did this stop Britain, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, from coming together and dealing with you black Africans? How does it stop the fact that anywhere you go you will be dealt with as a black African?

How much currency does your ethnic identity have outside of black Africa?

The ignorance here is that most people can't think bast their nose, the whole issue is that warring sides often come together for the betterment of the parties involved when they cannot stand strong as one, there is no African ethnic group that has the capability of throwing off China economically if China were to successfully fully incorporate the territories around them. The black Africans dying in the Mediterranean look like nothing else than like a sea of black bodies to these people, they could care less about your ethnicity which to them is nothing more than tribal noise in the bush.

You can't certainly compare your ethnicity to Germans.
